From the WHA office... Summer of 2011 has come and gone with all the fairs and shows and fun outings. On behalf of WI Holstein Association I would like to thank each and every person that has been so generous to be a sponsor of an award at our various events throughout the summer. With our generous sponsors and supporters our shows are filled with wonderful mementos to acknowledge the dairyman’s work on breeding outstanding WI Holstein animals. A reminder that we will be sending out the WHA renewal postcards at the end of September – if you would like us to email your renewal notice we would be happy to do so. Obituaries Margaret Rasmussen Margaret Louise Rasmussen, age 92, died on July 7, 2011, in Spring Green. She was preceded in death by her parents, Theodore and Mildred (Mainwaring) Ketcham; her husband, Norman; her daughter, Deborah McCaskill; and her brother, John Ketcham. She is survived by her daughter, Susan (Patrick) Oven of White Bear Lake, Minn.; her grandsons, Reid (Kristin) Oven of Fort Worth, Texas, and Matthew (Yoshie) McCaskill of Portland, Ore.; and by one exceptional great-granddaughter, Megumi McCaskill. At her request, no services were held. Memorials may be made to the Lone Rock Historical Society, P.O. Box 465, Lone Rock, WI 53566, for the preservation of Captain Henry Dillon’s (her greatgrandfather) Civil War uniform and tailor shop. The family thanks the staff at Greenway Manor in Spring Green for their loving care and kindness. Online condolences available at www.staffordfuneralhomes.com. Norm and Margaret Rasmussen were considered the “reigning King and Queen” of the Wisconsin Holstein Association during their 25 year involvement with the association. Norm was hired as parttime editor and secretary/treasurer in 1958 and when his position grew to a full-time fieldman/public relations role, Margaret took over as secretary/editor. During their time with the association the membership and county organizations grew by leaps and bounds and the junior program was initiated. Norm retired in 1980 and died the following year. Margaret continued with the association until 1982.
Dennis Vaassen Dennis W. Vaassen, 68, of Dickeyville, Wisconsin, died Tuesday, July 12, 2011, at Mercy Medical Center-Dubuque. Dennis was born on August 7, 1942, in Cuba City, Wisconsin, the son of Bernard and Agnes (Timmerman) Vaassen. He married Joyce Belken on July 10, 1965. Dennis farmed for 34 years on the Vaassen farm, retiring in 1998. After retiring he worked for J&R Transport near Dickeyville. Dennis enjoyed playing ball when he was younger, bowling, golfing, going to his grandchildren’s events and cheering for the Packers and Badgers. He also enjoyed the many trips he and Joyce went on with his seed corn friends. Dennis sang in the church choir for many years. He always played cards on Wednesday night at Gooch’s with his friends. Survivors include his wife Joyce; a daughter, Pam (Ken) Cummings, of Dickeyville; three sons, Aaron Vaassen and Brian (Tammy) Vaassen, both of Cuba City, and Kevin Vaassen, of Dickeyville; a brother, Norbert (Rosemary) Vaassen, of Dickeyville; eleven grandchildren, Tyler, Keisha and Darrian Cummings, Chantle, Devion, Airianna, Hunter, Brady, Cassi, and Mykenzie Vaassen, and Peyton Paisley; two special grandchildren, John Buchholz and Lisa (Rob) White; and a great-granddaughter,
Gabriella. He was preceded in death by a son, Allan, on February 13, 1969; a sister, Germaine Tranel; and three brothers, Arnold, LaVerne and Gilbert.
Joseph Sarbacker Joseph O. Sarbacker, 86, died on August 2, 2011 at Hospice Care in Fitchburg. Joe was born March 4, 1925 to Edward and Henrietta (Dushack) Sarbacker. He attended Blessed Sacrament School, and later graduated from Belleville High School in 1944 and UW Madison Farm and Industry Short Course in 1949. Joe married Esther (Davis) on Nov. 3, 1949. For six decades Joe and Esther farmed in Montrose township, Dane county, Wisconsin. He was frequently recognized for his contributions, service, and achievements by local and national agricultural organizations too numerous to mention. After founding Fischerdale Farms Joe expressed his passion for the dairy industry by establishing an outstanding Registered Holstein herd. Joe was a brilliant, humble, honest man who taught by example using his sense of humor and his hard work ethic. He enjoyed wood working, hunting and fishing, however, his greatest love and joy was his family. Being part of their lives and having them around him was a source of great happiness throughout his life. He is survived by his wife Esther of 61 years, and 11 children: James (Kathy) of Middleton, JoAnn Lien of Belleville, Robert of Belleville, William (Heidi) of Dodgeville, Thomas (Vicki) of Verona, Julie (Ed) Francois of Belleville, Janet (Brian) Hebl of Appleton, John (Shelly) of Verona, Jane Sarbacker of Belleville, Timothy of Mineral Point, and David (Candice) of Edgerton. He is also survived by 40 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren; two sisters, Mary Drunasky of Verona, Barbara (Les) Palmer of Belleville, sister-in- law, Ruth Davis, and brother-in-law Robert (Doris) Davis both of Verona. The family would like to acknowledge the incredible team of care givers which have provided Joe the most loving personal care imaginable during some of his most challenging days, and for the unending support given our entire family as well. With deepest gratitude we acknowledge, our many friends and neighbors, Fr. Ken Klink, the crew at Associated Physicians, the staff of Meriter Home Health, Hospice Care home care, Bright Star home care, and the Anderson-Johnson Hospice Care facility, by extending our most sincere thank you. Patrick Haughian Patrick J. Haughian, age 56, of Rice Lake, WI died Sunday, August 7, 2011 at the Amery Regional Medical Center in Amery, WI. He was born on December 17, 1954 to Joseph and Lorraine (Konop) Haughian in Rice Lake, WI. Graduated from Rice Lake High School in 1973. On July 14, 1979 he was married to Susan Tomesh in Dobie, WI. Pat dairy farmed in the Town of Oak Grove for over 30 years. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and taking part in many 4-H programs as a leader. Pat bred Registered Holstein Cattle and loved watching County and State Fairs as his children showed their animals. Pat and Sue were named Outstanding Young Farmers by the Barron County Jaycee’s in 1985. Pat Haughian is survived by his wife, Susan Haughian of Rice Lake, WI; 2 sons, Matthew and Mark Haughian of Rice Lake, WI; a daughter and son-in-law, Annie & Pat McCullough of Brodhead, WI; a granddaughter, Molly McCullough; 2 brothers and 3 sisters-in-law, Edward & Cheryl Haughian and Michael & Betty Haughian all of Rice Lake, WI and Julie Haughian of Haugen, WI; a sister and brother-in-law, Mary Lou & Robert Gabriel of Spooner, WI; many nephews and nieces; and in-laws, Tony & Adeline Tomesh. He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Lorraine Haughian; his stepmother, Leah Haughian; and a brother, Wayne Haughian.

From your President Corey Geiger Dear Wisconsin Holstein Association members: Thank you for the confidence you have placed in me. The unique opportunity to serve as both state president and national director allows me to fully understand your concerns and share them with the appropriate WHA, National Holstein, and dairy industry leaders in an attempt to resolve issues and move our industry forward. Such is the case as we navigate through the issue, “Can’t we just pull one hair sample to verify parentage and get a genomic test result.” Holstein USA leaders continue to work with the National Association of Animal Breeders (NAAB) that represents A.I. companies to finalize a business plan which would allow the Holstein Association to use NAAB’s genomic database on bulls to verify parentage. But, like most business deals, it takes time to iron out the fine points. As a dairy producer, most of us would think this would be a simple matter to resolve. For most of us, it may not be all about the money involved, but the extra time needed to pull two hair samples and fill out extra paperwork. It is my hope and belief that the one hair sample option will be a reality by the year’s end. I will keep you posted. On that note, you might have noticed that Holstein USA has reduced embryo transfer fees in June from $15 to $10. Also, the $10 late fee which most of us get charged when practitioners forget to file paperwork in a timely matter has been dropped. This is one step in lowering costs to members for what has become a relatively mainstream procedure. In recent years, I have received a number of questions about production records that do not appear on Holstein generated pedigrees. For some, it is a source of frustration, especially when we already are paying for herd testing fees. So, why don’t some records appear on pedigrees? DHIA is no longer in the enforcement business and makes no distinction on what is a qualified record. That responsibility now falls on each breed association. And that extra work comes at a cost. Holstein USA has three options for getting production records on pedigrees: TriStar Custom, TriStar Deluxe, and TriStar Premier.
For a $20 annual herd fee, 305-day TriStar records with a Data Collection Rating (DCR) of 76 or higher will be placed on pedigrees. TriStar Deluxe is the next step up. For the $20 herd fee, plus a 15-cent monthly per cow fee, both 305- and 365-day production records with an 85 or higher DCR rating will be placed on pedigrees. Additionally, your herd will be eligible for all awards programs except state and national production leader lists. To be eligible for those lists and to get Genetic Herd Reports, you will need to sign up for TriStar Premier which costs $30 annually for herds along with 25 cents a cow each month. TriStar Premier is included as part of Holstein Complete. As many of you know, we posted the WHA’s Member Services Manager position earlier this summer. After completing a review of our staffing needs and seeing the summer unfold, I am more confident than ever in our decision to post this position. We were pleased to have a number of qualified candidates. The WHA Executive Committee narrowed the list and held the first round of interviews in early August. A second round of interviews is planned and we hope to have the successful candidate hired by early fall. Our Genomics Forum was very well received. We had breeders attend from five states. Curt Van Tassel, Charlie Will, Jay Jauquet, and Tom Schmidt shared good science and gave some great advice. If you missed the event, there is an article in this issue. Also, there will be articles in the September Holstein World; the September 10 Hoard’s Dairyman; and there was an article in the August 3 The Country Today. Wisconsin Holstein Association hosts Genomics Forum The Wisconsin Holstein Association held a town hall meeting on genomics on Thursday, July 21, at the Rib River Ballroom near Marathon, Wis. Dairy breeders and industry members heard presentations from four industry specialists. Later in the meeting, attendees were able to ask questions about the tool that has changed how some dairy cattle breeders are choosing sires and matings. Leading off the presentations was Dr. Curt Van Tassell, a lead researcher on genomics who heads up the USDA Agricultural Research Service’s Bovine Functional Genomics project. Dr. Van Tassell reviewed the historical timeline of animal evaluations and the addition of genomic evaluations in 2009. The most recent addition has been the 3K chip. He commented that the 3K chip will most likely be replaced by BovineID (6K) with 6,000 markers sometime early this fall. Dr. Van Tassell also stated that the geneticists at USDA have to “train” the genomics system using existing genotype and phenotype data. There are about 25,000 animals in the system that have been genomic tested and have traditional progeny test info, as well; there are an additional 60,000 genomic-only tested animals without the traditional data. Dr. Van Tassell offered several uses of the 3K or 6K test for dairy breeders. First, it can sort heifers for breeding those that will be flushed, those that will get sexed semen, and those that may be sold for beef. Breeders also can use the 3K test to confirm parentage to avoid inbreeding and help predict an animal’s inbreeding depression more accurately because the test can tell exactly how many genes came from the dam and sire. In addition, breeders can use it for precision matings when looking for top genomic animals for the future. Charlie Will, long-time manager of Select Sires’ Holstein sire selection group, stressed the importance of seeing genomics as an additional breeding tool to use when making mating decisions. He spoke of the value of genomics for young animals because the least amount of information is known about them, and you can make the biggest difference in your breeding program at that age. Will believes genomics is a better predictor of a bull’s transmitting ability than parent average alone. He used the example of their April 2009 young sire group and the genomic predictions for their top five type young sires, which included Braxton ranked number one. When that group was released in April 2011, three of those bulls were still in the top five in their 2009 class for type. As with any tool, there are pros and cons. According to Will, some of the pros of using genomics includes helping determine genetic potential at a young age, significant value is added to some animals, the system finds new families that the old system did not, there is added confidence in using genomic young sires, and it assures that North American genetics will be competitive in the global market. Some of the cons are a lower value of some high-quality animals that have a low GTPI, animal numbers can change substantially as more information is added, it has driven up the price on some animals and embryos, and there is some over and underestimating of animals. Will summarized his presentation with several key take-home messages and stressed that the real value in any genetic evaluation system is when an animal’s phenotype and genotype say the same thing. Also, dairymen should not undervalue the use of proven bulls in their breeding program. Jay Jauquet offered two perspectives to those in attendance. As regional sire analyst for Alta Genetics, Jauquet stated that genomics has changed the way Alta Genetics manages its young sire program by sampling fewer young sires but paying more to the breeder for each bull they take. They have seen their sales grow from 28% to 40% on young sires and have found that they are sampling from new cow
families sourced worldwide. He also showed how much full sibling’s genomic information can differ with an example of eight bulls from a flush of a Sandy-Valley cow. Of those eight bulls, the GTPI numbers varied from +2349 to +1800 - a 464 point difference. Meanwhile, NM$ differed by 324 points, and udders 1.58. So, genomics has really helped narrow the field of which bulls are going to be sampled and offered as potential sires for the future. Jay has been a partner in Synergy Dairy of Pulaski, Wis., for seven years and offered another perspective and how they use genomics on their dairy. They use the 3K test on their young animals and then retest with the 50K test on the top animals in order to determine what individuals will be flushed. They have experienced genomics finding some great new cow families and it has helped to make better matings. He also stated that genomics can be a great mating tool by selecting a trait that you want to improve in your herd and then using genomics to find the cows in your herd that are strong for that trait. Tom Schmitt of Morningview Holsteins in Iowa stated he was very skeptical of the new technology at first. After seeing the results, they now genomic test all heifers and are able to concentrate on those with the highest test resultss. He made the point that any breeder has a heifer or cow that could potentially give you one of the “high ones” with the right matings to top genomic sires. He stressed that genomics is a phenomenal tool for breeders to use and appreciates that the genetic advancement is so much quicker when you are identifying the traits in heifers. Following the presentations, several members of the audience were able to ask questions, and representatives of Holstein USA and Pfizer were on hand to talk about the tests they have available for dairymen to use. Holstein Association USA holds 126th Annual Business Meeting, Elects Officers and Directors Brattleboro, Vt.: Holstein Association USA recently held their 126th Annual Business Meeting in conjunction with the 2011 National Holstein Convention in Richmond, Va., June 24 and 25. President Larry A. Tande presided over the meeting. State of the Association President Larry Tande and Chief Executive Officer John M. Meyer both gave addresses reporting on the current state of the Association and their vision for the membership. “Never before has there been a greater need for leadership in agriculture and our dairy industry,” said President Tande. “The future of agriculture is positive and promising, as we assume our role in feeding the world. Truly, we are in a global environment. Leadership is needed in defining our dairy industry’s role. “ Tande followed by covering some of the topics facing today’s U.S. dairy producers, and outlined qualities that individuals should consider when serving on a board or a committee. CEO John Meyer highlighted some milestones from the 125-year history of the Association before reviewing strong 2010 performance, including the following. “Registrations were 339,908, which is a 4 percent increase from 2009,” Meyer stated. “Members’ appreciation of the Holstein COMPLETESM program is evidenced by the enrollment of 239,703 cows, which is a 3 percent increase over 2009, and 1,759 herds, which is a 2 percent increase.” Transfer activity was brisk as 70,335 animals changed hands. This is a 13 percent increase over last year. Other prominent figures included the classification staff evaluating 217,996 cows through the regular classification program, a 3 percent increase over 2009, and the continuing expansion of the TriStarSM Premier program, with 383,000 cows enrolled last year, representing a 1 percent increase. Bylaw Amendment Passed Holstein Association USA delegates voted unanimously to adopt the proposed bylaw amendment, which will be effective in 2012. Under Article II – “Officers and Their Duties,” Section 1 of the Holstein Association USA Bylaws, the following statement will be added, "Candidates must submit a Conflict of Interest Disclosure Statement to the Nominating Committee prior to closing of nominations at Annual Meeting. Candidates will be screened by the Nominating Committee and a slate of candidates will be presented to the delegates.” The full disclosure of any potential conflicts of interest, via these statements, will help the delegates make a more informed decision when they vote for the candidates of their choice. New Officers and Directors Elected Two officer and three director positions were up for election this year. Chuck Worden of Cassville, N.Y. was elected to a two-year term as president, following two years of service as vice president. Glen E. Brown, Coalville, Utah, won the vice presidential election, and will serve a two-year term on the board. Elected to their first three-year terms as Holstein Association USA directors were Mike Jones, Marshall, Ind., representing Region 3, and Roy R. Buessing, from Axtell, Kan., for Region 7. Jim Burdette, Mercersburg, Pa., Region 2, and Boyd Schaufelberger, Greenville, Ill., At-Large director, were both re-elected to their second three-year term. Retiring from the board of directors this year are Larry Tande, Medford, Minn., who served as president, Region 3 director Ron Fuhrmann, Hoagland, Ind., and Region 7 director Kate Geppert, Columbia, Mo. This year saw the consolidation of the individual county junior groups into the new District 5 Junior Holstein Association. This group kicked off with the District 5 Dairy Day held in March. The event brought 35 juniors together to learn about showing, fitting, washing and judging. Despite the frigid temperatures, a flame of excitement was lit in our junior membership. This excitement carried over to our next meeting, which was held in conjuction with District 5 show. At this meeting we had election of officers and a wonderful classification workshop by Mike Snyder. Our first officer team is comprised of President Garrett Madland, Vice Pres. Aaron Stanford, Secretary Katelyn Brunn, Treasurer Theresa Madland, Historian/Reporter Renee Pierick, At Large Reps Adam Field, Alli Walker, Johanna Madland and Jesse Frozene and leaders Marci Walker, Teresa Field and Sandy Madland. District 5 was able to field its first judging team at the State Holstein Championship Show and earned bragging rights by winning the Junior Bale Role Contest. Future events include the District 5 Junior picnic which will be held September 11, a winter farm tour day and a second annual District 5 Dairy Day.

W
hen you hear someone talking about deep cow families and longevity you may not immediately think of Twin-Valley Holsteins, but this hidden gem embodies both of these things. This farm, owned by John and Marge Roloff, is the picture of a Registered Holstein herd with great genetics that go way back. John and Marge have three children: twins Karen, who teaches 1st grade in Mankato, MN, and Kristy, who works for UW-Madison Division of Information and Technology; son John M. and his wife Katie, are currently very involved in the daily operation of Twin Valley Farms. John M went to school at University of Wisconsin-Platteville with a major in Animal Science with a dairy emphasis. He came back to the farm after he graduated in 2000. Katie graduated from Southwest Technical College and earned a degree in Dairy Herd Management. John M and Katie were married in 2009 and have a 1 year old son Matthew. John’s father, Ernest Roloff, bought the family farm in 1950. John graduated in 1969 from Wonewoc-Center High School. He then attended college at UW-River Falls in 1970. He had always wanted to farm and returned home when a fire burned down the family’s barn. John and Marge have been farming since 1976 and purchased Twin Valley Farms in 1980. They now milk twice a day in a tie stall barn and have 90 Holstein cows along with 110 young stock. John M. and Katie Roloff currently own a large portion of the family herd. Twin-Valley Farms, has a rolling herd average of 22,019 pounds with a 3.76% and 829 pounds fat and 3.07% and 676 pounds protein. The herd has a BAA of 110.1, with 26 Excellent cows and 47 Very Goods. The Roloffs do not feed a TMR, instead each animal is fed an individual ration of haylage, corn silage, high moisture shell corn, and a protein mix along with dry hay at night. John M. is responsible for feeding, breeding, and mating decisions within the family’s herd. John and Katie Roloff assist with the field Twin-Val Damion

work and in milking the herd. The Roloff family goes to great lengths to keep their animals healthy and comfortable, utilizing mattresses in the stalls that are also bedded with straw. The heifers and dry cows are kept out on pasture. Marge is the main caregiver responsible for raising and feeding the calves that are housed in individual hutches until they are moved to group pens at weaning and then sent to a separate heifer facility at four months of age. The Roloffs own 420 acres and rent an additional 80 acres and grow all of their own feed. Corn is grown on 140 acres, oats and alfalfa are grown on 160 acres and another 20 acres are used for soybeans. John enjoys hunting deer and turkeys in his free time. He currently serves as the Vice President of the Juneau County Holstein Breeders. He has served previously as a member of his church council, member of the Select Sires Board, town board, and school board. The family also exhibits animals from their herd at various shows. At the Wisconsin District 5 Show this year, Twin Valley Farm was named Premier Breeder and Exhibitor. The family also exhibited at the State Show and did quite well there. Twin-Valley was honored with its first Gold Medal Dam this past April for Twin-Val Encore Memzy. The Roloffs enjoy marketing their animals when possible and have sold animals in sales throughout the years, however most of their animals are sold privately and involve selling a large number at once to make room for new groups of freshening heifers. Some of the bulls that they are currently using on the farm are: Durham, Damion, Atwood, Guthrie, Destry, and Braxton. They agree that the most influential bull used in the herd has been Regancrest Elton Durham. Most of the animals in the herd have Durham somewhere in their pedigree and they still use Durham as much as possible. The Roloffs consider the most influential cow family on the farm to be the “Amy” family. John purchased Oak Cliff Dolan Amy who has two daughters, Twin-Val Chief Mark Amy EX-92 4E with 296,000 pounds of milk lifetime, and Oak Cliff Clansman Amy VG-89 with 320,000 pounds of milk lifetime. One-third of the cows in the herd can be traced back to these two cows. Oak Cliff Clansman Amy had three daughters, a VG-87 Integrity, a VG-85 Blackstar and an EX-91 Durham. The Durham has a VG Morty and several other heifers on the farm. The Blackstar has an EX-91 daughter, Twin-Val Mark Wayne Amy who has an EX-92 daughter with numerous D-Lucky EX-92

granddaughters in the herd. Twin-Val Chief Mark Amy had a VG-87 Encore granddaughter that produced over 100,000 pounds lifetime. This cow’s daughter, Twin-Val Durham Amanda, is an EX-94 Durham that was sold to Regancrest Farms in Iowa. While at Regancrest, she was chosen as the Champion of the Midwest Fall National Show in 2007 and was named the first ever Reserve Supreme Champion of the Open Show. She has a full sister in the herd that they are very excited about that has a Shottle daughter. There are numerous other Excellent and VG daughters of this family in the Twin Valley herd. Another influential cow family at Twin-Valley Farm, owned by John M. and Katie, is the Venus family. Hi-Line Haven Abbot Venus was scored EX-90 and was purchased at a UW-Platteville Dairy Club sale as a calf. Venus has four daughters. Twin-Val Durham Violet was scored EX-93 and is a third generation Excellent. Violet has over 125,000 pounds lifetime. This year she was the second place cow in the 125,000 pound class and has had two heifers, a VG-88 Morty and a VG-88 Adam also at True-Blue Holsteins. The Roloffs are expecting great things from this family and cannot wait to see what this cow family develops into.
One of the Roloffs foundation cows was Crestbrooke Stardust Lea EX-90. Her daughter, Twin-Val Adv Lorretta-Red, is the herd’s first sixth generation Excellent. They are very excited about her three daughters, one is a two year old Lawnboy, and she also has heifers by Redliner and Reality. The Roloff ’s favorite cow in the barn is Twin-Val Damion D Lucky, EX-92 She was named Grand Champion and Best Udder of the District 5 Show this year as a four year old and is “the queen of the herd.” Lucky is out of Twin-Val Morty Levi, VG-86 out of an EX-91 Granite. She has three full sisters in the herd with four more to be born and two maternal Durham pregnancies. Lucky has a VG-86 two year old sister and a Sanchez yearling. John thinks this is an exciting cow family to watch in the next few years. The main goal of the Roloffs is to breed Registered Holsteins that will hold up overtime and look good doing it. The Roloff family wants to enjoy the cows they see when walking into their barn. Twin-Valley Farm breeds for type and longevity and they also feed for milk. John and Marge’s future plans involve transitioning the farm to John M. and Katie Roloff. John and Marge are looking forward to slowing down and spending more time with their grandchildren in the future.
Immel Insurance & Financial Services Holstein Futurity The Cow Palace at the Fond du Lac Fairgrounds was the location of the 2011 Immel Insurance and Financial Services Holstein Futurity. Four 5 year olds were shown. First place went to 2nd-Look Canyon 5534 owned by Second Look Holsteins, Eden, Wis. Canyon also took home first place Bred and Owned and Best Udder. Top production recognition in the 5 year old class went to Chrisleacres Ready Diamond owned by Ray and Rae Nell Halbur First place in the two-year-old class went to Westphalia Laurin

Behnkes Win District 6 Futurity The eighth annual District 6 Holstein Futurity was held on June 21, 2011 in Janesville, Wis., in conjunction with the District 6 Holstein Show. Out of forty-nine entries made three years ago, eight of them were presented in hopes of claiming one of the top prizes. The Wallace Behnke family of Bur-Wall Holsteins, Brooklyn, exhibited the first place cow, Rose-Lyn Shottle Candy-ET. She received the $500 prize sponsored by Badgerland Financial, Janesville, as well as 25% of the purse, totaling nearly $800 in winnings. Second place went to Hoesly Advent Magic-ET exhibited by Jake and Paige Hoesly of Brodhead. She was awarded a cash prize of $250 sponsored by Chris Gransee Hoof Trimming, Evansville, as well as 20% of the purse for a total payout of nearly $500. Although we’re sometimes tempted to use a high GTPI bull, especially high in type, so far we’ve primarily stayed with using the true and proven bulls. We want to see what the offspring look like as calves and even more as cows. That puts us “behind” in sire selection, but it also avoids wrecking a good pedigree. Perhaps when the actual scores and linears verify the genomic numbers we’ll get more bold. Premier Breeder – District 4 Danhof Holsteins, Marshfield Tom & Jason Danhof Herd Info: All the cattle are housed at Jeremiah & Sherry Hagen’s farm in Spencer, WI. Danhofs have housed cattle there for more than five years. The work at the farm is done primarily by Jeremiah and his father, Roland. The Hagens are milking about 70 cows, 30 of which are owned by Danhofs. RHA: 2x 21,000 3.8%F 3.2%P District Show Herd: Between both families, they exhibited 6 cows, all of which were homebred. Current sires being used: Atwood, Destry, Sid, Guthrie, Bradell, Lauthority, Dempsey, Braxton, Gold Chip & Bradnick Breeding philosophies/herd goals: Both Danhofs and Hagens want to breed functional type cows that will milk from very sound udders and last for a long period of time. A large portion of income comes from the sale of replacements, so these characteristics are very important to them. Comment on the animals that contributed to the winning of this award: All five of the milking cows that Danhofs showed were descendants of GBM Starbuck Valiant Janice EX-94. That was the first Holstein that Jason ever purchased and was Nominated Junior AllAmerican as a five year old. Three of the cows were Durhams out of Dannys Milan Jill EX-94, the first homebred cow of the Danhofs and Grand Champion of the Wisconsin Championship Show in 2003. The other two cows shown were a Durham granddaughter of Jill and a Roy from a Champion sister of Jill.

Although it was raining outside it didn’t put a damper on the intensity of the show or keep people from dressing up for the formal event. I have greatly enjoyed my reign as 2011 WHA Princess Attendant. I would like to take this time to encourage anyone who is even slightly interested to apply for Holstein Royalty. Over the course of the year I have been able to travel to many shows and see a lot of tremendous cattle. Not to mention that as a member of Holstein Royalty you get the benefit of having the best seat in the house! Why did you decide to attend UW-Madison? UW-Madison offered everything I was looking for; a high quality dairy science program with the extra-curricular organizations and opportunities to gain hands-on experience and the opportunity to build my network. The atmosphere of the large Midwest campus located in a beautiful city and Big Ten sports was also a plus. What has been your most memorable college experience? Too many to count! From being a part of World Dairy Expo as a member of Badger Dairy Club to annual trips to the Royal Winter Fair to the lifelong friends I have made. Also, being present at both the football and basketball upsets of #1 Ohio State was unforgettable. What has been your favorite course? Dairy Science 375 - Reproductive Management of Dairy Cattle. This course offered a great mix of practical lectures with hands-on instruction. Not only did I learn to A.I. and ultrasound I also began to fully understand dairy cattle reproduction. What are your future career goals? I want to work in the dairy industry in either the A.I. industry or in journalism. I also hope to continue to own, breed, and show registered cattle.

UW-Madison Dairy Judges Participate in European Tour UW’s tenth national dairy cattle judging championship earned at last fall’s World Dairy Expo qualified the team for the International Livestock Judging Tour in Europe from June 22nd through July 5th, 2011. The team consisted of Brian Coyne, Chelsea Holschbach, Ben Sarbacker and Kelly Sime. These were the first UW judging team members to participate in this international event. The team wrote a daily blog of their travels for Holstein World On-line and the following text is from Coach Ted Halbach’s final posting. Kelly, Ben, Chelsea and I are back on U.S. soil after an incredible two-week tour of Europe that took us to Scotland, Great Britain, France, Luxembourg and Germany, while Brian remains behind for an internship experience in Ireland. My students are happy to be back, and all agree that the tour gave them a broader perspective of the world that we live in and what it means to be an American. If you have been following their blog, you know that they learned a lot about European agriculture during the trip, visiting a pasture-based dairy operation in Scotland, competing at both the Royal Highland and Luxembourg National youth dairy cattle judging contests, taking scenic coach tours through the open agricultural landscape of Great Britain and France, living with rural host families for three days in Luxembourg, observing how robotic milking systems work and gaining exposure in Germany to the art of fine wine making. In each country they visited, they saw numerous sites of historical significance including castles and cathedrals, some dating back as far as 900 years, buildings that mark human engineering success such as the Eiffel Tower, and monuments to those who sacrificed in the two World Wars fought on the continent. The tour also served as a social science laboratory, as they learned to adapt to cultural differences such as food, currency, public transportation and customs. One of the important things I believe my students learned from their experience is that people around the world are different and that’s okay, and the challenge is to try to understand why. Governments may have policies that we don’t always agree with, but as people they are very much like us, inherently generous and well intentioned. A particularly moving experience for my students occurred at the Luxembourg American and Memorial Cemetery where nearly 5,076 of our war dead are buried. Rows of white crosses and Stars of David mark the final resting place for those who gave the ultimate sacrifice in World War II’s Battle of the Bulge. It was here that Allied Forces led by George S. Patton’s U.S. Third Army stemmed the enemy’s desperate Ardennes Offensive, one of the critical battles of World War II. Each grave faces U.S. soil except for one, that of Patton, who is buried facing the troops he commanded in battle. There is a solemn remembrance and resolve that each of us surely felt looking out over the cemetery. For the young people on the tour, there was also the reality of what service to your country can entail and a better sense of the risks that today’s soldiers take when they volunteer. A spontaneous singing of the Star Spangled Banner on the bus after we resumed our travels sent chills of pride through me and great confidence in this current generation of young Americans. All of the parents and sponsors of the tour participants should be proud of how these young people represented themselves and our country. During their two weeks of travel we couldn’t have asked for better ambassadors. And besides the goodwill and learning that took place, it’s clear that the students had plenty of fun as well. Almost immediately, students from the different teams and schools interacted with each other, in some cases forming friendships that will surely last well beyond the conclusion of the tour. I can’t begin to express my gratitude to the generous sponsors who helped give our students this once-in-a-lifetime experience. Your thoughtful donations truly enriched the educational experience of my students. State Showmanship Contest
• October 1 - Junior Award forms are due in the office. Due to the late dates of the World Dairy Expo we ask that you have the following award forms into the WHA office on or before Oct. 1st, 2011. No award forms due Oct. 1st will be accepted at World Dairy Expo. Distinguished Junior Member Younger Member Recognition 12 & Under Recognition Member Long Range Production Award – Junior Owned Junior Progressive Breeder Award • October 15 - Junior Essay Contest entries due to the WHA office. • November 1 - Junior Award forms are due in the office for the Junior Farm Tour Award & WHA Royalty entry • November 15 - Dairy Bowl County team entries due in office with full payment. • November 15 - Dairy Bowl possible team members names need to be submitted. This does not have to be your team that you will have at Junior Convention, but the possible team members and they do not have to be split onto a team –we just need names in order to check for membership. The State Showmanship Contest was held Monday, July 11 at the Wisconsin Championship Show in Fond du Lac. Participating Juniors qualified at their respected District Shows. Below are the results of the Junior and Senior divisions. The top three youth in each division received awards sponsored by the Wisconsin Junior Holstein Association and items donated from NASCO. It always seems like the summer goes by so fast - I don’t know if it’s because we’re cooped up all winter while it’s snowy and cold or if it’s because there are so many great things happening during the summer. Either way, I can’t believe it’s nearly September already. It’s been a fun summer with many great WI Holstein shows once again. If you haven’t seen our results on the WHA website already, this issue gives you an opportunity to read how your fellow Holstein breeders did at the District and Championship Shows. Watch next month’s issue for reports from the WI State Fair and 25th Anniversary WHA Futurity. The October issue will also be another of our popular Midwest Holsteins issues. I hope you’ll take advantage of this joint issue with Minnesota, South Dakota, Iowa and Illinois and the chance to have your ad reach over 5,500 readers in the upper Midwest. Ads are due September 9 we’ll have a little more time because of a late World Dairy Expo but we’ll still be on a strict deadline in order to have extra copies ready to distribute at our booth at WDE.
