Hello WHA members, October brings my one year anniversary here with the Wisconsin Holstein Association and it’s been quite a year of learning. As a member, I never recognized all the details that went into planning each of our events and programs in order to ensure it was a successful and positive experience for all of us. I appreciate your insight, support and most of all patience as I have settled in to my new role. It’s been a busy and exciting year here for all of us. One of our objectives for 2012 was to deliver information to our membership better. Earlier this year we rolled out a redesign of our website. I was fortunate enough to start before the 2012 Junior Convention in order to hear your questions and concerns as it pertained to the arrangement of information on the site. Your input was the driving force behind the redesign and we hope you have met your needs. Go to www.wisholsteins.com for the latest information on upcoming initiatives, deadlines, industry news and more! We will continue to tweak and upgrade our site as we move forward in order to meet your needs. If you have an upcoming sale, county meeting or activity; give me a ring or shoot me an email at larryn@wisholsteins.com and I will make sure I get it on our calendar of events. A few months back we started delivering more information via email. This will be an area we will continue to grow in order to keep you informed, as well as notify others of your upcoming events and activities. If you aren’t receiving these emails, please let us know. Either we don’t have your email on file or have an old email in our database. I promise we won’t “spam” you! You can expect to see a monthly e-newsletter highlighting junior and adult programs as well as recognizing outstanding members in our organization. And you can opt-out of these messages anytime you like. Expect to see 2013 membership renewals soon! New this year, we will be sending initial notices via email to valid ones on file. We now have the ability to process credit cards here at the office so you will be able to pay for your membership online or over the phone in order to make the process easier for you. For those of you without an email on file, expect to see our traditional post card in the mail in October. You can still give us a call in order to make your payment with a credit card. If you don’t receive a notice one of these two ways, give Sharon a ring and let her know. Also, make sure you validate your personal information listed on your account. We depend on you notifying us whenever you have updates to your account in order to keep our records accurate and to ensure we stay in touch with you. A number of junior and adult award forms are coming due this fall starting in October and going through the beginning of December. Distinguished Breeder and Younger Dairy Person applications are due into the office by November 10. This is a great way to celebrate your accomplishments as a Wisconsin Holstein Association member so please take a few moments to submit your application. There are many of you deserving of these awards! Planning for 2013 has already begun at the office. Every organization has opportunities for improvement in order to become better at what they do. That will be our focus into the next year. I have had great conversations with members throughout the year at annual meetings, summer shows and the state picnic offering input and ideas in order to make WHA even stronger. Fine-tuning programs, coaching and supporting event hosts and looking at new ways to broaden our reach will certainly be areas of focus this next year. Don’t hesitate to offer your ideas and thoughts. Though they may not happen overnight, rest assured you are being heard as we are noting them as we move forward. With a small staff we prioritize our focus on those that will make a positive impact for all members. If we haven’t had the opportunity to meet, feel free to stop by the World Dairy Expo booth or invite me out to an upcoming event in 2013. I put a lot of miles on this year meeting with and learning from members across the state. Expect to see a packet of materials this fall that will include a 2013 calendar of events for the Association. If your county has an upcoming event for next year and would like me to be a part of it, let me know. I won’t be able to make them all myself so it will be on a first come, first serve basis. For those events I can’t make, I will make sure you have priority for the following year. We will do our best to have a representative on hand for you regardless. Finally, I want to give a huge THANK YOU to Chris, Sharon and Laura here at the office as well the WHA Board of Directors for all their help, support and insight over the year. Obituaries Tiffany Langteau
Tiffany J. Langteau, 21, was tragically killed in a car accident September 4, 2012. Born on November 21, 1990 in Marshfield to Steven and Kathryn Langteau of Stetsonville, Tiffany leaves behind her parents, a sister, Heidi, a brother Joshua, maternal grandparents Bob and Jeanette Edelburg of Rib Lake, paternal grandfather, Edward Langteau of Abbotsford, Godfather, Larry Brandl of Medford and a very special friend John Lawfer of Kent, IL. Tiffany graduated from Medford High School and was starting her senior year at UW-River Falls studying agriculture communications and marketing. Cows were her life. She received the American FFA Degree and was active in the UW-River Falls Dairy Club. She also enjoyed 4-H, cooking, photography and gardening. She recently completed a summer internship with ABS Global working with their GMS program and served as the 2011 National Red & White Dairy Cattle Association Intern. She was a member of the Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church of Stetsonville, the National Holstein Association and the National Red and White Dairy Cattle Association. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be given to the family for future designations.

Fer-Crest Farms Brandon Ferry & Shianne Lurvey, Hilbert By Amy Ryan
It was during Shi’s freshman year and Brandon’s first year of Short Course that the two met and their similarities have united them since. While at school, they were both involved in the dairy cattle judging teams, Brandon Ferry & Shianne Lurvey where Shi’s team placed 8th in the Intercollegiate Judging Contest and Brandon’s team was 3rd in the Post Secondary Judging Contest. Brandon and Shi have shared their judging knowledge while coaching the Fond du Lac County 4-H Dairy Judging Team for the last four years with Chad Ryan and Chris Pollack. They helped to coach the team to four state dairy judging contests and most recently coached the Senior team that placed third at the National 4-H Dairy Judging contest. Sixteen three-year-old Holstein cows became stars as they entered the Coliseum arena at the Wisconsin State Fair in West Allis, Wis., on Saturday, August 11, 2012 to compete for first place in the 26th Annual Wisconsin Holstein Futurity. As first junior, Siemers received an award sponsored by Angela Davis-Brown of Ma-Brown Holsteins and Jerseys and $50 sponsored by the Wisconsin Junior Holstein Association. Following close behind in second place was Ms Crescentmead Gld Aqua-ET owned by Jordan and Whitney Ebert of Algoma, Wis. She took home a check for $750 presented by International Protein Sires. She was also named the second place junior. Dorsland Dundee Dosequis-TW, owned by John Dorshorst of Dorsland Holsteins from Junction City, Wis., was the third star of the show. The Holstein Futurity is different from a Trapp, Alice in Dairyland Rochelle Ripp and WHA Princess Attendant Anna Blake. traditional show because exhibitors trade in their show whites for tuxedos, suits, and formal gowns to compete for the title of best dressed. Each exhibitor looked like a star in his or her formal apparel; however, only three best-dressed individuals were named. Each best-dressed individual received a photo frame and a cash award. The Wisconsin Holstein Association and Wisconsin Junior Holstein Association sponsored the Best Dressed awards. Best Dressed Junior went to Carley Krull from Lake Mills, Wis., exhibiting Krull Damion Ego. Kyle Natzke from Fond du Lac, Wis., exhibiting Philmardo Jolie Jasper was awarded Best Dressed Male. The purpose of the Futurity is to help promote the dairy industry to the general public and display the care and dedication Holstein breeders have for their animals and the products they produce. Baked Potatoes were provided at reduced cost by the Wisconsin Potato Growers Auxiliary. Milk chugs and cream puffs were donated by Golden Guernsey and the Wisconsin Bakers Association respectively. Moriah Brey and Laura Herschleb served as the Mistresses of Ceremonies for the evening. Futurity, the right is reserved to cancel same and refunds made to persons owning females that have been nominated, their share of all monied accrued after the deduction of actual expenses in the promotion of the Futurity. SALE OF ELIGIBLE ANIMALS: When an animal that is entered in the Wisconsin Holstein Futurity is sold, the eligibility may be transferred to the new owner, and it shall be his responsibility to inform the Futurity Committee of the change of ownership. The seller shall inform the buyer that the animal purchased is already entered in the Futurity. To aid in this, exhibitors will receive an entry certificate for each animal after entry payment has been received. New owners will need to sign an entry form after notification of entry into Futurity. OPEN CLASS SHOWING: If the show is held at the Wisconsin State Fair, all animals shown in the Wisconsin Holstein Futurity are eligible upon proper entry to be shown in the open class competition of the Holstein Show. It is the responsibility of the animal’s owner to fill out the necessary forms for open class competition. MISCELLANEOUS: Neither the Wisconsin Holstein Association nor the Wisconsin Holstein Futurity Committee is in any way responsible for the condition of the premises in which the Futurity is held and is not liable in the event of accident or loss of persons or property. All matter pertaining to the showing of the Futurity are subject to the rules, regulations and health requirements of any WI Holstein Association sponsored show along with those for the show at which the Futurity is held. DRESS CODE: Every exhibitor must have formal dress to show in the Futurity. (Minimum requirements for men include a shirt, tie and dress pants while women should wear a dress, business suit or the equivalent.) Exhibitors not meeting the minimum dress code requirement will be denied entry into the show ring. PURPOSE: To stimulate interest in the breeding and exhibiting of outstanding Officially Identified Holsteins of 87% RHA or higher. To promote the Registered Holstein breed and dairy industry to the general public with an appealing and memorable presentation. PROCEDURES: An animal is nominated by an owner. All nominations are the responsibility of the owner. Dates, fees and rules will be followed to the letter. ELIGIBILITY: Any registered Holstein female that was born September 1, 2011 through August 31, 2012 is eligible for the 2015 Wisconsin Holstein Futurity. FEES: Entries, along with $35 per animal, must be postmarked on or before January 1, 2013. Animals may be late entered from January 2 - April 30, 2013 for $50 per animal. Full entry fees must accompany entry form or sent within the appropriate time noted above. PURSE: The purse in this event shall consist of all monies received by the Wisconsin Holstein Futurity (plus interest earned) as nomination fees, less the actual expenses incurred in its promotion and management. All Futurity monies shall be kept in a separate Futurity Fund and used only for Futurity purposes. The purse in this event will be divided among the first forty Futurity placings as follows: 1st place winner - 15% plus sponsorship monies 2nd................12% Next ten places ........2% each 3rd...................9% Next ten places .....1.5% each 4th...................8% Next fifteen places ...1% each 5th...................6% (If 100% of purse money is not distributed by above breakdown, the balance will be split equally amongst all participants.) NATIONAL DIRECTOR’S REPORT Dear Holstein Breeders, For those who have been following negotiations on the future of genetic evaluations, you may have noticed it has been somewhat quiet since June’s National Convention in Springfield, Mo. For the most part that has been somewhat true, as formal meetings have not taken place between those involved with assembling and carrying out genetic evaluations. However, our national Holstein leaders have made several trips to Washington, D.C., to discuss Holstein’s position on the matter. During that dialogue, our leadership team has been assured that there are not any time restrictions in place at USDA that state when evaluations would need to be conducted by the private sector. Since our convention our leadership has had fruitful discussions with leaders from NDHIA. The voting members of the Council on Dairy Cattle Breeding are scheduled to meet and discuss a new version of the proposed Cooperative Agreement October 7 and 8. On the youth front, Holstein Association USA’s 2013 Distinguished Junior Member (DJM) and Young Distinguished Junior Member (YDJM) applications are now available at www.holsteinusa.com/juniors. As you know, these awards recognize the most accomplished members of the National Junior Holstein Association, the highest honor given by the Association to youth. Entry materials must be postmarked by March 1, 2013, to be eligible. Following recommendations from the Junior Advisory Committee, which were approved by the board of directors, applications for both the DJM and YDJM contests have been significantly revamped. Those familiar with the contest in previous years should make note of the changes before working on 2013 applications. Many sections were combined or shortened, reducing the total length of the required entry portfolio. In addition, a video section has been added to the application. To help explain the changes and answer any questions youth or youth leaders may have about the application, Holstein Association USA will be hosted an informational webinar on the subject. Young Adult Education Award applications due November 15
The Wisconsin Holstein Association’s Young Adult Committee will be offering monetary awards for young adults to attend educational events in 2013. To apply for a Young Adult Award, interested applicants should call the WHA office or visit the website at www.wisholsteins.com. Applicants must be a member of the Wisconsin Holstein Association and their primary source of income should be from the farm. Educational events include, but are not limited to, Young Dairy Leader’s Institute, World Dairy Expo, and World Ag Expo. Applications must be submitted by November 15 and winners will be announced prior to the 2013 Adult Convention. What dairy industry event did you attend and what did you learn from the event? I attended the Young Dairy Leaders Institute (YDLI) through the Holstein Foundation. YDLI is a national program that teaches leadership and communication skills to young adults 22-45 in the dairy industry. As a member of the seventh class, I learned how to be a better speaker and how to speak confidently to the public on agricultural issues. YDLI opened my eyes on how we need to be proactive in the dairy industry to promote our wonderful products and to teach the public about how we operate our farms. Why did you complete the YAC Educational Award application? Being a self-employed dairy farmer my expenses to attend an event like YDLI would have been all on my own. So I applied for this scholarship and was fortunate enough to receive $500 toward the event. I was also awarded a scholarship for both years from my creamery, Burnett Dairy Co-Op to attend YDLI. Without the YAC Educational Award Scholarship and my scholarship from Burnett Dairy Co-Op it would have been really hard for me to attend YDLI. Thank you YAC Committee for sponsoring me and giving me the opportunity to attend such a great event! Would you recommend others to complete the Educational Award application? I would recommend any Wisconsin Holstein member that is 21-45 to apply for this scholarship. It is a great way to help cover costs in order to attend an industry event or educational program like YDLI. It allows you to network with others and be a part of our great industry events that you may not have been able to attend without the additional funds. You can attend most any event in the industry!

Farming Brings a Whole New Meaning to Pierce County Holstein Breeder
If there is one word that describes Tom Breeggemann of Mellow-Brook Registered Holsteins, Elmwood, Wisconsin, it would be “inspirational”. Tom has been a Registered Holstein breeder for the last 50 years and has always had a passion for farming. Tom was born without arms below his elbows. His left arm extends to his elbow ending with two fingers that are joined together. His right forearm is approximately three quarters in length with three fingers and one thumb. He has severe scoliosis because the right arm is more developed giving him more strength to use more often. He has done the same chores as any other farmer, from driving tractor to milking cows to climbing silos. Tom has never thought of his arms as being a limitation that would prevent him from doing anything he wants to do around the farm, even showing the great cows he loves so much. Tom grew up on a farm near Shakopee, Minnesota, and started milking cows with his mom at the age of 12. His family had all grade animals, but after talking to a field representative with the Holstein Association, Tom decided he wanted to start a registered herd to improve his herd’s genetics. Tom was 18 years old when he bought five registered calves. The herd has grown since then. In 1969, Tom married his wife, Pat. They bought a farm in Belle Plaine, Minnesota, where they farmed and raised their family of nine children for the next 21 years. Because he had always wanted to farm in Wisconsin, Tom and his family moved to Elmwood in 1991. Four years later the unthinkable happened. Pat was diagnosed with stomach cancer and not long after she passed away. With five kids still at home and cows to be milked in the barn, they knew they had to keep going. While it was a difficult time, everyone pulled together to keep their father’s dream of farming alive. One won’t hear any complaints from the five kids about those times and today all of Tom’s children are very successful. It wasn’t until Tom got older and his hips and back started going out that he thought of himself as disabled. This is when Tom heard about AgrAbility of Wisconsin. AgrAbility is a grant-funded partnership of Easter Seals Wisconsin FARM (Farm Assessment and Rehabilitation Methods) and University of Wisconsin Cooperative Extension. AgrAbility also works closely with the state of Wisconsin’s Division of Vocational Rehabilitation (DVR), to explore opportunities for assistive technology devices or modifications to help individuals with limitations as a result of their disability(s) continue farming. AgrAbility has a simple mission: to help people keep working in production agriculture, even in the wake of an accident or basic wear and tear on the body. Over the last 21 years, AgrAbility of Wisconsin has served over 2,000 farmers, helping with problems ranging from arthritis, respiratory conditions, hearing and visual impairments, chronic back pain, and amputations. A farmer’s disabilities may change over a lifetime, and AgrAbility adjusts services accordingly. Tom received assistance from AgrAbility and DVR for the first time in 2001. When Tom broke his shoulder and ruptured four vertebrae in his back in 2007, he contacted AgrAbility again to see if they could find new ways to help him continue farming. With the assistance provided by AgrAbility and DVR, Tom was able to continue farming and do everything he loved to do in a more efficient, comfortable, and safe way. He did that until he had to have back surgery in June of 2011 and had a stroke in late October 2011. Although the back surgery and stroke make it difficult for Tom to help out on the farm, he is still very involved in the operation. Tom farms in partnership with his son Matt. They milk 70 Registered Holstein cattle. Matt always enjoyed showing cows and was passionate about 18–wisconsin HOLSTEIN news/October 2012
the registered industry, and he joined the Mellow-Brook operation in 2002 after graduating from high school. He and Tom formed a limited liability company (LLC) in 2005. Tom pointed out that, “Matt does all the farm work now, while his wife, Tia, helps on the farm when she is not working her other job as a veterinarian.” Matt drives to the farm every day from his home in Ellsworth. Two of Tom’s grandsons, Pat and Austin, live with him on the farm. Matt has partnered with his father to keep the dream of breeding excellent cows going for further generations. Tom has bred many excellent cows in his 50 years in the Registered Holstein business, and he has passed that talent on to Matt, who is now in charge of the breeding program. They have high standards for their cows who are bred for type and fed for production. The bulls they use in their breeding program must be at least +4.0 points in type, +3.0 points in udder and +2.5 points in feet and legs. But cows and genetics are not the only reason the Breeggemanns have stayed in the registered business. As Tom put it, “my boy wouldn’t milk without registered cows; he has really enjoyed welcoming good friends in the industry to come see the cows.” It’s because of the people and the relationships they have built that has really made them enjoy being in the Holstein Association. And it’s going to the shows and sharing their passion with other dairy enthusiasts that make it all worthwhile. No matter what obstacle is thrown at this family, nothing will ever stop them from farming. In 2010, the Breeggemanns suffered a barn fire. The following year, they made major updates to the barn, which had been built in 1980. A new roof was put on the barn, as well as new tin siding. They added tunnel ventilation, built a new office, replaced the stalls in the barn, and added three new pens. It was after the fire and rebuilding that Tom had his back surgery and stroke. It has been difficult for him to not be able to see his cows. But with eight of his nine children living within 45 minutes of him, Tom knows he isn’t alone. Even after his stroke, he has not forgotten anything about any one of his 70 cows. According to his family, Tom is getting better every day and cannot wait to get back on the tractor seat and do fieldwork again. Farming is a way of life for many people here in Wisconsin and across the country. When someone has a disability their way of life changes, but with passion and determination, farming can still be a reality as it is for Tom Breeggemann. He may tell you he, “ain’t all there,” but has still spent years developing an elite Registered Holstein herd for himself and his family. Tom’s ability to meet his challenges in ways many could never imagine is truly inspiring. hirty years after Corey took his first show calf to the Manitowoc County Fair (the only March calf born on the farm that year), her great-granddaughter, Ran-Rose Blitz Allstar EX-93 was named Grand Champion of the open show which featured over 100 Holsteins. Allstar will qualify for the 125,000 lb. class before the end of the month.

Why did you decide to attend UW-Madison? I had a lot of exposure to UW from an early age as my four older siblings all graduated from Madison. Therefore, it was an easy choice for me and it offered me everything I had hoped to gain in my time in college. Badger sports in the Big Ten, the AGR fraternity and the dairy judging team all were important in attracting me to UW as well. What has been your most memorable college experience? This spring I studied abroad in The Netherlands for a semester and definitely had a once in a lifetime opportunity. It forced me to step outside of my comfort zone and I know I gained a lot from my time overseas. Road tripping to Pasadena for the Rose Bowl and the yearly trips to The Royal were also great times too. What has been your favorite course? Dairy Herd Management 433 and Ag Finance 419 were both great courses that were extremely relevant and practical. Dairy Science 375, Dairying in Mexico, was probably my favorite as we had a two week field study to Mexico that was a great out of the classroom learning experience. What are your future career goals? To work for Holstein USA as a classifier upon graduation while staying involved in my family's farm. Eventually I see myself returning home to further expand and diversify our herd and farm.

Our August classification was very succesful as six more cows entered the Excellent category. Two full sisters by Braxton out of Goldwyn Glory became 9th generation Excellents. We also had a new five generation Excellent and a new three generation Excellent. Four-of-a-Kind Mariposa went EX-90 (92-MS) at 3-03 after winning Best Udder at the Wisconsin Valley Fair. There were also two new 92 point cows and three new 91s. We welcome all attendees to the Wisconsin Holstein Convention next February to see these cows and their herdmates. Introducing... Bosside Holsteins started in August 1990 on Prince Edward Island, Canada. John and Tineke Boschma left Holland after John’s brother Durk and his wife moved to the home farm where they still farm today. We purchased a farm with 30 cows, 100 acres, machinery and quota. The second year 22 cows filled that quota so we needed more quota and bought the neighbor’s quota but had to milk there because of the milk board rules. In 1993 we moved to a bigger farm with more land and quota and slowly expanded to get ready for the next generation. In 2000 son Hank graduated from high school and came home to farm. We were up to 70 cows and financed to the max (mostly money tied up in quota). In 2001 John came to Wisconsin for World Dairy Expo with a Purina tour and toured several parts of Wisconsin. The tour stopped in at Twin-B, Kingdom Haven and Harmony-Ho and John fell in love with the area. We found a farm in Colby with a tie-stall barn and 300 acres. We built a freestall and parlor to house up to 200 cows with John & Tineke Boschma daughter Dorithy, son-in-law Timmy and son Hank. Dorithy and Timmy had their first baby boy, Josh, in January 2006, and decided to move back to P.E.I. that spring. They had another son, Alex, in 2010 and they live and work in New Brunswick. Hank built his own coverall barn in 2007, picked 25% of the herd and started Sky Reach Holsteins. In 2009 Hank bought his own farm in Milan (six miles from us) and in 2010 married Shannon van Doorn who works at Riesterer & Schnell Inc. in Medford. Our youngest daughter Janie is looking for a job in journalism, will be moving to Washington D.C. with her partner Casey and takes care of updating the Bosside Holsteins website. Last year we had a chance to sell the farm and did so. We purchased 40 acres up the road and built a new tie-stall and house to focus more on genetics. What we like in this area is the great infrastructure; the best ultrasound vet in the country, top notch nutritionists, agronomists, banks, machinery dealers and a wide choice of dairy plants that want our milk along with 10 A.I. companies to pick from! Bosside Holsteins, P.E.I, Canada In 1995 we bought a two-year-old Tesk from the Robthom Ivory Mark family with help from Ray Leblanc. We flushed Lenzway Tesk Ruby T Rita with Juror because we liked his sire stack: Blackstar, Mark, Sexation and Bootmaker. The flush gave us one bull calf: Bosside Ruben. In short, Roger Turner liked him and years later he was number two on the list. After moving to Colby, we had a nice Boss two-year-old from the same cow family that Jay Jauquet wanted to use Oman on. That flush gave us a bull, Bosside AltaRoss, and a heifer, Bosside O-Man Rachel. Rachel had a Jose daughter, Rachele, and we have an Atwood and Bowser yearling at the farm from Rachele. From Boss’ sister Ruby we have a nice Atta Boy. We have also purchased embryos from the Genex MOET program which gave us a chance to use different bulls like Mascol x Form Bret x Yadda. We ended up with one bull, Coop Bosside Massey, and a heifer, Coop Bosside Yelonda. This pedigree is different - an outcross and very unique. We have Dr. Buchner flush 3-6 animals every 6 weeks year round. We value cow families and pay attention when we make matings. There are several bulls that we don’t want in a pedigree. We use mostly genomic bulls - we like 70% a lot better than just the parent average from years ago. Through genomics we can sort the best heifers out for flushing and the best bulls to use on them. We look at cow families, sire stack, type, production, plus components, strong health traits and low SCC. With each mating we like to improve each animal and if it happens to be a bull we like to try to get it in A.I. or raise it for natural service. In the past, bulls that worked well for us were: Blackstar, Tesk, Juror, Rudolph, Shottle and Advent. We are both active church members at First Presbyterian in Abbotsford. Happy Fall Holstein Lovers! It was a long hot summer filled with shows, picnics, futurities, dairy breakfasts and Laura’s friends. To recap some of the events I attended we’ll start off with the WI Junior and Open Holstein Letters State Fair! I look forward to State Fair every year, it’s a week to bond with other juniors across Wisconsin, you are able to exhibit in the largest junior show in America and get to see some of the best junior animals Wisconsin has! Not only did I get to spend time catching up with my friends and being able to watch numerous heifer and cow classes but I was privileged enough to exhibit myself. I exhibited a Spring Yearling, Crestbrooke GAP Tori-ET who is owned with Kyle Natzke, and she won her class, which was so very exciting! I was so thankful for the opportunity to exhibit her at this great show. After the junior show I came back to West Allis for the WI Holstein Association Futurity, and this was a night for the books! Everyone was dressed so lovely and the animals all came out looking their best. As the end of August rolled around we started getting ready for the WHA Annual Picnic, which was hosted by Mystic Valley Dairy, the Breunig family. The royalty put on a scavenger hunt and helped with the sand pit which was a huge success, as well as the bouncy house... who could forget a bouncy house?! The day was filled with laughter, catching up with old
friends and making new ones. The door prizes were far and wide and I am still a little sour I didn’t win those AWESOME wash boots! But now that August is gone and September has rolled in along with school and the chilly air this can only mean one thing... EXPO! This is by far my favorite week of the year, and I know this year is going to be even more special then the others. I get the best seat in the house, I get to present the best animals with their well deserving awards and I will be meeting so many great dairymen and women! One activity that all youth can participate in at World Dairy Expo is showmanship. As many already know, this is by far my favorite activity to participate in and it’s probably why I am encouraging everyone to participate in it! It is a great opportunity to show off all the hard work you put into your dairy project! Not only do you get to prove your hard work but it’s an even better learning experience. This is the best showmanship contest in the U.S. and you get to observe other showmen your age, the judge gives you pointers and also compliments what you have done well. This is very helpful because then you can take these tips and use them for the actual show! However, before you compete in showmanship I would suggest that you read the new rules that were added to the PDCA Showmanship Scorecard. I would be overjoyed if all the WHA Juniors exhibiting at Expo participated in showmanship and I encourage you to as well, and for those that need a little push, I challenge you! I can’t wait to see everyone at Expo, until then take care! Laura Finley

WHA 2013 Summer Internship Opportunity The Wisconsin Holstein Association is searching for eager Registered Holstein enthusiasts looking to learn more about the industry and wanting to gain valuable experiences that can be utilized in any industry. Applicants attending a 2 or 4 year college are welcomed to apply. It is not required to be majoring in an Agriculture field but background in the dairy industry is preferred. Salary or Hourly: Salary w/ bonus opportunity Reports to: Executive Director & WHP Editor Travel: Up to 50% (requires a personal vehicle with gas mileage reimbursement) Date: May 27-August 16, 2013 (some weekends required) Location: Baraboo, WI
Major Duties & Responsibilities: Event Planning • Attend all WHA sponsored summer events and other county Holstein events. These include the WHA State Championship Show, Showmanship and Judging Contest, Junior State Fair Holstein Show, WHA Futurity and Open State Fair Holstein Show. Intern may also be asked to attend District Shows around the state when needed. • Work with WHA committees to plan events such as the 2013 WHA Futurity, State and District Shows, State Picnic and more. This may include inputing and finalizing show entries, organizing awards, volunteers and other details such as mailings and dignitary needs. • Organize show booklets, meals, send correspondence before and after an event and archive final placing results. Public Relations • Ability to communicate to all areas of the Association in a timely manner • Assist in any communication materials needed for members or external media such as pamphlets, letters, bios and entry forms • Work with external sponsors as it pertains to awards, signage and coordination of events • Build valuable partnerships with industry partners Web, Print and More • Write press releases announcing upcoming events and summarizing placings and/or winnings. • Compile and publish updated marketing materials on WHA website such as press releases, entry forms, event details and imagery. • Take photos of event winners when needed to post online and share with Editor. This will require the creation of an archive for year-end presentations. • Interview Wisconsin Holstein breeders and write profile articles as assigned by the Editor; this may require taking photos for the article. • Write articles of interest for the WI Holstein News and website as well as identify potential roundtable discussions for the News. • Opportunity to learn database management and design e-newsletter creative.
2012 WHA State Picnic hosted by Mystic Valley Dairy
The Mitch and Jacquie Breunig family of Mystic Valley Dairy, Sauk City, hosted the 2012 WHA State Picnic on a beautiful, sunny Saturday, August 25. The Breunig family opened their facilities to visitors and those in attendance had the chance to view three rows of cows in the freestall barn, all identified with signs, consisting of the more prominant families that Mystic Valley is working with. Following the cattle viewing, the crowd moved down to the newly constructed shop for a delicious lunch. Activities were offered to keep the kids busy including a scavenger hunt put on by the WHA Princesses, sand pile with toys and a Toystory themed bouncy house. Following the lunch, WHA Board member Kevin Jorgensen welcomed the crowd and told some of history of the farm and shared the sad news that Jenny-Lou Patron Toyane VG-89 GMD DOM, the dam of Toystory, Lou, and nine VG daughters all from different sires, passed away earlier in the week and is now buried on the farm. He also talked about the impact of Toystory and Lou, both throughout the breed and in the herd. Mitch Bruenig then introduced the family and shared more about the operation. He said that just last spring they watched the shop where everyone was gathered burn to the ground and this was the just completed replacement building, while construction on the new heifer facility next to it would begin on Monday. As a long-time coach of the Dane County 4-H Judging team, Mitch asked the senior team members to be officials for the day’s judging contest. Sara Harn and Lizzie Endres gave official reasons on the two classes. It was a close contest with many of the placings being broken by the tie-breaker question “How many daughters are in Toystory’s proof ?” Winning the 14 and Under division was Emma Olstad, Michael Schieldt and Briana and Ryan Griswold. Placing in the 15 and Over division was Logan Gutenberger, Lindsey Hellenbrand and Sara Griswold. Ladies Division winners were Kristin Olson, Vicki Janisch and Angela Davis-Brown. Men’s winners were Kent Wendorf, Jim Rickert and Gary Swain. Following the judging contest results, many door prizes were handed out to those in attendance. The Wisconsin Holstein Association would like to thank the Breunig family for organizing and hosting a great picnic. Book your hotel rooms for Junior Convention by November 20! The 2013 Junior Convention will be hosted by Rock County and taking place at the Holiday Inn Express, 3100 Wellington Place, Janesville, WI 53546. Room reservations need to be made by November 20 under the “WI Junior Holstein Convention” room block by calling 608-756-3100. There are 120 rooms available at the main hotel at the rate of $99 for a king bed or double queen bed room. Additional hotel space is available at the Microtel Inn, 3121 Wellington Place, Janesville WI 53546. (directly next to Holiday Inn Express). Call 608-752-3121 and reference room block “WI Junior Holstein Convention” in order to reserve a single queen room at $55.99 or a double queen room at $60.99.
WHY Friend Applications
It’s time to recognize the junior advisor, parent or volunteer that has helped your county gain momentum or remain strong during 2012. Recognition of the WHY Friend is a great way to show that dedicated person in your county that you appreciate everything they have done for you during the year. We all have those special individuals that have put in countless hours in order to ensure your junior Holstein program remained strong. Now, show your appreciation by nominating them for the 2012 WHY Friend award by November 15, 2012
Sell, Sell, Sell!
The largest fundraising effort of the year is underway for our Junior programs and events – the Junior Raffle! Our calf this year is donated by MilkSource Genetics, a herd that excels in the show ring year after year. Tickets should be easy to sell to any Registered Holstein enthusiast. Just ask! In order to broaden your potential audience to sell to, we rounded up UW Men’s Badger Hockey tickets, two rounds of golf with cart and more. So ask that teacher, business man or local convenience store clerk if they will support our Junior Holstein events and programs. There is something for everyone in this raffle! If you need more tickets, contact the office any time. Just give us a call and we will be more than happy to get them in the mail for you right away. Keep us printing tickets because that means 2013 is going to be a great year!

Dairy Bowl Dairy Bowl Deadlines The Dairy Bowl contest will be held on Saturday, December 29, 2012 at the Wisconsin Junior Holstein Convention. Finals will be held on Sunday, December 30, 2012. The deadline to enter a team for the 2013 Dairy Bowl Contest will be NOVEMBER 15, 2012. Entries must be IN OFFICE by this date or entry fees will double. The fee to enter teams will remain $10 for the Rookie division and $30 for Junior and Senior divisions. Remember, FEES WILL DOUBLE if the entry form is not IN OFFICE by November 15. Again this year, all potential team member names must be submitted by the November 15 deadline. Please remember, official teams do not need to be named until registration at the 2013 Junior Convention. This includes all possible team memebers and there is no limit to the number of juniors that can be included on the list. Names must be included with the entry form to make a completed entry. All coaches and participating team members must be members of the WI Holstein Association or WI Junior Holstein Association. Counties that will have juniors wishing to participate on a Wisconsin team must submit their $5.00 entry fee by November 15. It’s that time of year again - World Dairy Expo! I know many people that look forward to this week all year long and I can understand why. It’s a great chance to catch up with old friends, meet new ones and see some great cows - of all breeds. I hope everyone has a chance to get to World Dairy Expo for at least one day and see all that it has to offer. Be sure to stop by our booth in the lower level of the arena and good luck to all those exhibiting at the show! If you’ve picked up this issue at our booth at WDE, we hope you’ll enjoy all Wisconsin Holstein has to offer. Included in this issue is the entry form for the 2015 WHA Futurity. Entries for the show are due January 1 and are $35 per head. The entry deadline for our annual Cover Contest is also coming up. We’re looking for fun views and scenic photos of cows with submissions due Nov. 15. We do accept high quality electronic photos, but please make sure they are at least 5x7 in size and 300 dpi or larger.
