From your President Todd Stanek Hello Wisconsin, Without a doubt the conversation topic this summer has been the lack of rain across much of the country. Even in northwest Wisconsin where we were pretty good early, the drought reached us in late July. Heavy soils are doing pretty good, but the corn on light soils looks pretty bad. I bought my farm in 1988 and suffered through that drought and remember wondering how I would survive. I have not traveled to southern Wisconsin, but I have talked to many friends who live there. I know it’s bad because everyone has said that this year makes 1988 look like a picnic. My hope is that milk prices will be high enough for the next year to replace what was lost. Our membership is filled with passionate breeders, and I’m confident they will figure out a way to survive. While I’m talking about passionate breeders, I would like to congratulate Paul Buhr on his election to the national board of directors. He and Corey Geiger will represent Wisconsin very well. Thank you to Robert Night for his six years as a national board member. Wisconsin also had two junior members recognized as Younger Distinguished Junior Members, Jordan Siemers and Katherine Larson. We would also like to recognize Kyle Natzke, Stephanie Nagel and Ami Cooper for reaching the semi-finals of the Distinguished Junior Member contest. I would also like to thank our members from Wood County for hosting our state show. We had very hot temperatures for the show but your show ring made it very pleasant. I would like to congratulate Budjon Farms and their partners for winning Grand and Reserve Grand Champion honors. We also had a successful futurity with 16 cows making the show ring in Milwaukee. I would like to say thank you to the members who participated in this event, as it is a great public relations event for our dairy industry. Congratulations to Crystal, Jordan, Josh, Jake, Connor & Lauren Siemers who took first place with Siemers Goldwyn Glams-ET. Have a safe harvest and see you at expo, Todd Stanek

2012 National Holstein Convention
A group of juniors and adults from Wisconsin traveled by bus to the National Holstein Convention in Springfield, MO, June 26-30. The week was full of junior competitions, meetings and fun activities for all. Things got off to a fast start for the juniors on Wednesday with the Dairy Jeopardy competitions. The senior group got things off to good start for Wisconsin with four advancing to the semi-finals and Katie Wendorf advancing to the finals. This is our industry and it will only be as good as we make it.” In his State of the Association address, CEO John M. Meyer first highlighted several of the Association’s performance achievements from 2011, which was an outstanding year for Holstein Association USA. “Registrations, the core activity and lifeblood of all pedigreed livestock organizations, continue to rise. In 2011, 360,149 animals were registered, an increase of over 20,000 registrations from 2010. It is interesting to note, the last time we registered 360,000 animals, there were well over 120,000 dairy farms in the United States. Today there is less than half that number of dairy farms in the country.” He continued, “Without question, Holstein Association members and dairy producers nationwide continue to realize the added value U.S. Registered Holsteins® bring to their operations.“ The Association’s premier package of programs and services, the Holstein COMPLETESM program, also shows impressive participation, indicated Meyer. “The popularity of the Holstein COMPLETE program is evidenced by the 256,401 cows in 1,828 herds enrolled in 2011. This is 16,700 cows and 69 more herds enrolled than the previous year.” Videos of both speeches can be found online at www.youtube. com/HolsteinUSA. Unveiling of the New Ideal Holstein Cow and Bull A real highlight of the Annual Meeting was the unveiling of the new Ideal Holstein Cow and Bull paintings. Last year, Holstein Association USA commissioned renowned artist Bonnie Mohr to complete the new ideal Holstein cow and bull, and she has been working diligently over the past several months to complete the project. The end result was breathtaking, as seen by attendees of the Annual Meeting on Friday morning. Holstein enthusiasts can review the entire project at http:// holsteinmasterpiece.blogspot.com, including a video of the unveiling at the Convention. Watch the web site and upcoming issue of the Holstein Pulse for more coverage, and visit www.bonniemohr.com for print ordering information. Bylaw Amendment Passed On Saturday, delegates voted on several items, including a bylaw amendment proposed by the board of directors regarding future board elections. In the future, if a region does not have at least two candidates declared for an open director position by March 1 of the election year, that regional director position will become an at-large position for two terms, unless the position is held by an incumbent. This amendment will take effect in 2013. The spirit behind the amendment was that it is intended for regional director candidates to be nominated from their regions, and then voted on by all delegates. Regions that put forth only one candidate are essentially appointing their director, removing the choice of the delegate body. While directors are elected from each region to ensure geographic diversity on the board of directors, each director acts in the best interests of members from across the country, not only those in their region. Director Elections Held Three regional director positions and one at-large directorship were up for election at this year’s annual meeting. Individuals elected to their first terms on the board of directors were R. Paul Buhr, Viroqua, Wis., representing Region 5, and Patrick Maddox, Riverdale, Calif., for Region 9. Incumbent directors re-elected to their second three-year terms were At-Large director Jonathan Lamb, Oakfield, N.Y., and Region 8 director Bill Wright, McCornick, Utah. Retiring from the board of directors after six years of service were Region 5 director Robert Nigh of Viroqua, Wis. and Hank van Exel, Lodi, Calif., Region 9 director. Three Resolutions Adopted by the Membership Three resolutions were brought forth for the delegate body to pass judgment on, and all three were adopted. Resolution 1 was submitted by the Pennsylvania Holstein Association: “Whereas: The United States Dairy Genetic Evaluation program is the best in the world due to its unbiased nature. And Whereas: The cost to continue the program at USDA is less than 1% of the current
Holstein USA Board of Directors and retiring Directors (inset photo) USDA budget. And Whereas: The current system is beneficial to the United States dairy farmers and to consumers alike. Therefore, be it Resolved: That Holstein Association USA Inc. encourages USDA to continue performing dairy genetic evaluations for the dairy industry.” Resolution 2 was brought forth by the Wisconsin Holstein Association: “Whereas: For the past generation the U.S. has been recognized as a world leader in dairy genetics and whereas it is important to be proactive in developing a plan for genetic evaluations in the future. Be it Resolved: That Holstein Association USA work cooperatively as a member of the Council on Dairy Cattle Breeding to develop and present a cost effective, thorough, reliable system to collect data and process genetic evaluation currently calculated by USDA-AIPL.” During the Annual Meeting, board members, delegates, members and guest speakers discussed the future of the U.S. dairy genetic evaluation program for over two hours. The Holstein Association USA board of directors made their position clear on the subject, which mirrors the resolution submitted by the Pennsylvania Holstein Association. In conclusion, Holstein Association USA Vice President Glen Brown stated, “The Holstein Association USA board is committed to keeping the dairy genetic evaluation program at USDA-AIPL.” Resolution 3 was presented by the Holstein Association USA board of directors, in appreciation of the Missouri Holstein Association: “Whereas, the Missouri Holstein Association, in preparation for the Holstein Association USA, Inc. 127th Annual Meeting and National Convention, has arranged an educational and fun-filled week with great opportunities to visit outstanding dairies, and has warmly welcomed everyone to the Show Me State; and Whereas the Missouri Holstein Association is celebrating its centennial anniversary this year and is showcasing the state’s rich Holstein heritage. Now, therefore be it resolved, that the Holstein Association USA’s Board of Directors, members, and staff honor the Missouri Holstein Association for their dedication and achievements; and be it further resolved, that the Delegates of this 127th Annual Meeting and National Holstein Convention recognize each and every hard working individual at the Missouri Holstein Association and express grateful appreciation for making this a most memorable week!” The 2013 National Holstein Convention will be held July 8-11, 2013 in Indianapolis, Ind.

FROM THE FIELD By Sarah Trapp, Holstein USA Regional Field Rep I’m sure many of you have wondered how to find information on your account or on an animal and you are not sure how to find it; but remember that you have the Holstein Association USA website available to access information 24 hours a day. One of the most frequently used functions on the web site is the Animal Search. There are several options available, depending on what information you have and what you are looking for. If you have an animal’s name or registration number, you can do a quick search directly from the home page by utilizing the animal search box near the main menu. More advanced search capabilities are available by clicking on the Animal Search button towards the top of the page. When you click on that Animal Search button, you will discover four different options - searching by an animal’s name, by owner prefix, by registration number, or by NAAB code. These options also allow you to enter more specific criteria, such as year of birth, which can be helpful for finding groups of animals from a herd. Once the list is generated you can request family trees, pedigrees, sort the animals by name, date of birth or even classification scores. A common question we are asked is how to look up the number of Excellent cows you have bred. To do this, simply type your prefix only into the Animal Search box on the home page, and then click the Classification Score heading, and the list will be re-ordered with the highest classified animal at the top. Remember, if you have bred several hundred (or thousands of) animals, the list will take a couple of minutes to generate. On the bottom of the home page is the Popular Lists section. These include the high classification lists, the pedigree analysis of National Show winners, highest registry activity bulls, and last month’s new national members that you can browse through at your convenience. Don’t forget you can do numerous other things online. There is a Genomics Resource Center, Software Updates, National and State Calendars, as well as access to forms and applications for everything from signing up for classification to ordering tags or even doing online transfers. If you have questions after you check out the website at www. holsteinusa.com, let Chris, Dennis or I know. We would be happy to stop by your farm for a demonstration.

The Barron County Holstein Association held their annual banquet in January, with Larry Nelson from the Wisconsin Holstein Association and Sarah Trapp from Holstein USA in attendance to speak about opportunities available for us. Larry brought along a nice picture to give to us, which we voted to frame & donate to a fundraising benefit for a member of our community. We also donated to the 2013 Farm Technology Days that Barron County is hosting next year. We hold a Spring Sale and a Fall Sale at the Barron Sales Pavillion which were both well attended. We continued with our Holstein Heifer Calf Project, offering a $1000 interest free loan to applicants to purchase a calf. Barron County was well represented at the District 1 Show. We continue to sponsor class ribbons and awards at the State Show and the WI State Fair. For the first time at the Barron County Fair, we sponsored the award for a supreme champion dairy cow, along with other class ribbon sponsorships. The Barron County Juniors attended the state convention in December 2011 and participated in the Dairy Bowl as well as having members being recognized in the 12 & under division and others being award scholarships. We held our annual banquet in February where members were given their activity awards. Clayton Wohlk, former JAC, told the members of things the WI Junior Holstein Association has to offer and what wonderful experiences they can have. The Juniors started the summer by having two members attend Cow Camp. We served ice cream at the Barron County Dairy Breakfast. We donated a basket to a fundraising event to benefit a long time 4-H Barron County woman. Show season started with a nice group attending the District Show. At the Rice Lake Aqua Show we crowned Katie Wille as our Holstein Queen for the year. The Barron County Fair is in July and we run an ice cream cone stand as well as passing out cheese sticks, milk and cookies during the dairy show. Also during the fair this year, the Juniors honored Indianhead Holsteins, Bob and Karyn Schauf, with our “Friend of the Holstein Cow” award. The Juniors rounded out the 2012 fair by winning club herdsmanship. We had many members represent Barron County at the WI State Fair. Congratulations to all the junior members for their great success in the showring and in other dairy projects last year.

The Eau Claire County Holstein Association is not very large but has several active and enthusiastic members. This past year we co-hosted “A Night on the Farm” with the Augusta FFA Alumni. Nearly 300 people attended the event at Charles and Sandy Huth’s beautiful, well managed farm. The Huth’s milk over 250 Registered and identified Holsteins in a large, beautiful, efficient comfort stall barn. Bears Grass Dairy hosted one of the state spring barn meetings. Bears Grass is owned and operated by the Donald Honadel and Donald and Gary Schroeder families. The event was very successful and everyone in attendance enjoyed the newer, well managed 300 cow Registered operation. The Eau Claire juniors, under the supervision of Carol Stalbusch, exhibited at both the 2011 and 2012 Wisconsin State Fair and won the small herd division barn award in 2011. This past June we hosted a successful District 1 Holstein Show. We furnish and man the milkhouse at the county fairgrounds and furnished awards at the county fair, District Holstein Show, Wisconsin Championship Show and Spring Show. Eau Claire County is also proud to have member Todd Stanek as President of the Wisconsin Holstein Association.

STUDENT PROFILE Name: Emma Watry Hometown: Elkhart Lake, WI High School: Elkhart LakeGlenbeulah High School Class Size: 36 Farm: 100 head Holstein herd Major: Dairy Science Business
Why did you decide to attend UW-Madison? Graduating from high school, I knew that I wanted to pursue a degree in the agriculture field. I knew that by choosing UW-Madison, I would have the best options to get a worldclass degree in whichever area of agriculture I chose, while receiving a true Wisconsin college experience. What has been your most memorable college experience? My most memorable college experience came from working at the World Dairy Expo through the Badger Dairy Club. It was exciting to be so close to the action, and to know that I was a big part in making such a huge event happen. What has been your favorite course? My favorite courses at UW-Madison have been Reproductive Management of Dairy Cattle and Dairy Herd Management Practicum. It was fun to be able to have the hands-on experiences with AI, ultrasounding, and scanning cows in Reproductive Management, and then being able to apply what I learned in the classroom on the farm in Dairy Herd Management, in a real-world situation. What are your future career goals? Thanks to my classes this semester, I have a newfound interest in the reproductive field, and my future career goals involve hopefully working in this area.

I’m not sure where the summer has gone! Seems like just yesterday we were at Spring Show and getting excited for the upcoming summer shows - and now here we are getting ready for World Dairy Expo! This issue is packed full of summer show results, from all of the District Shows to the All-WI winners from the Wisconsin Championship Show. And we’ll have more results from the Wisconsin State Fair and Futurity in next month’s issue. The October issue will be another Midwest Holsteins issue with ads going to breeders in the five upper midwest states. If you’d like to reach over 5,000 readers with your ad, as well as those at World Dairy Expo, please give me a call by September 7 to get your ad in this issue. We’ll be distributing extra copies of both of these issues at our booth at World Dairy Expo, along with our annual Breeder Calendar. This is a popular item at our booth each year and we’re often out of copies by the last day the demand is so hot! If you’d like to be a part of this special feature, please give me a call or email right away to sign up for your preferred month. WHA is now equipped to take credit card payments so if you’d like to pay your membership, advertising bill or sponsorship by credit card just give the WHA office a call at 1-800-223-4269. We’re also looking for nominations for our Distinguished Breeder and Younger Dairyman awards - if you know of a deserving WI Holstein breeder, please call the WHA office so we can get an award form sent to that member. Don’t forget to be looking for those great possible cover shots for our Cover Contest. This year’s theme is “Heads or Tails” and we’re looking for unique views of your cows. Submissions needs to be mailed or emailed (high quality JPG format) to me by November 15. Until next time...
