Wisconsin Holstein Briefs L Congratulations to Mandy Brazil & Graisson Schmidt who were married on July 1. I Congratulations to Emily & Ryan Kamps, Belmont, who were married on July 1. U Shannon Dwyer and Mark Wolf welcomed daughter Isabelle Marjorie Wolf on July 11, weighing 8 lbs. 1 oz. and 20.5 inches long. Congratulations! I Congratulations to the Keller family at Kellercrest Holsteins, Mount Horeb, for being awarded an Outstanding Achievement in Resource Stewardship award at the U.S. Dairy Sustainability Awards. E The Barron County Junior Holstein members voted to design and purchase a banner to be used at the District 1 Show in future years. After struggling to come up with signage for the picture area when Barron County hosted in 2016, the kids thought a banner highlighting District 1 counties would be helpful to everyone. K Our condolences to the family of Marjorie Lippert, Susan Kruger and Nancy Carns, who passed away recently. Full obituaries are printed below. The Wisconsin Holstein News encourages readers and members to submit information for the Wisconsin Holstein Briefs column. Nancy Carns

Nancy Lou (Poller) Carns, 75, of Cuba City, Wis., died peacefully at her home on Monday, July 31, 2017 following a stroke. Nancy was born on June 21, 1942 to Leonard and Leta (Withrow) Poller. She graduated from Platteville High School and received her Bachelor’s Degree in Education at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville in just three years. She married Robert Carns on July 19, 1963. She taught at the Platteville Junior High School for one year. When they began their family, Nancy chose to raise their three children and help on the farm. She and Robert began farming near Elk Grove in 1964. In 1968 they moved to the farm in rural Cuba City where they have lived and build a strong herd of registered Holsteins for nearly 50 years. Even though Nancy grew up a “city girl,” she turned into a very hard working farmer, doing everything from milking cows to helping with field work. Nancy was a lady with many talents and hobbies. She made afghans, crocheted beautiful items, sewed clothing for herself, Bob, and the kids and grandkids. She enjoyed refinishing antique furniture and made numerous quilts. She learned to applique on clothing and quilts. When the kids were half grown she decided to take piano and organ lessons. She had a love for lighthouses. They had two huge gardens so she did a lot of canning, often working into the wee hours of the morning, then up to help with chores and field work again. She and Robert were involved for some years with square dancing, card club, 4-H, and the Holstein Friesian Association. They received the Lafayette County Distinguished Holstein Breeders Award. They attended the Big Patch Primitive Methodist Church. Nancy is survived by her husband, Robert; three children, Rodney Carns, Randy (Elaine) Carns, and Nina Carns; five grandchildren, Stephanie Carns, Amanda (Scott) Williams, Emily (Nick) Rauch, Ashley Carns, and Justin Carns; three great-grandchildren, Ryleigh and Avarie Rauch and Wade Williams. She is also survived by her sisters, Rita (Robert) Chase and brother, Clayton Poller. She was preceded in death by her parents; a baby sister, Betty Jean in 1936; and older sister, Pat Hayden.

From your President Kevin Jorgensen Where did the summer go? It seemed that just yesterday we were at Spring Show and Labor Day seemed a long way off. Now school is back in session and the leaves will soon be falling. The good news is that also means football season is here and the first Packer game is right around the corner! I wanted to offer some food for thought this month as it relates to the overabundance of cattle in the business today. There is no doubt we are at 30-year highs in the US dairy cattle population with over 9.4 million cows in the national herd. This is contributing to record production and probably to the malaise in milk prices that we are all seeing and wish were better. It seems this has many people concerned as it has been the subject of many conversations with members the past few months. Certainly, this can be perceived as a problem but it also offers opportunity. However, it also means perhaps making different decisions than we have made in the past. Instead of making as many Holsteins as we can, we need to focus on making the RIGHT Holsteins. This may mean culling harder, this may mean strategic use of sexed semen on your top heifers and young cows to make better replacements. Maybe it means breeding older or less promising cows to beef or using them as recipients. It could also include adding a new cow to your herd to bring in a new family. Bottom line, we need to have less sacred cows and look at every member of the herd as a top ender or a bottom ender. The bottom enders need a new job and one of them is not carrying their own replacement calf. There was an article in the News when I was kid that featured Dean Doornick

of Jon-De Farms and he stated his philosophy; “Sell off the top, breed off the middle and cull off the bottom. That was probably over 30 years ago but has always stuck with me and helped shape my own philosophy. I say this because there are several great sales coming up this fall including our WHA Halloween Harvest Sale on October 31. There will be great opportunities to add top enders to your herd. Every sports team is always looking to improve even if you are an organization like the Packers. They don’t rest on their laurels and sometimes that means getting rid of a seasoned veteran before it is too late. Can we view our herds as a team? You can shuffle the roster to have a more productive overall herd. Ship a few and add a great young cow or heifer with a terrific pedigree. Those opportunities exist at nearly every sale and maybe the best times to trade up are when times are tougher. Cull cows are still better than the 10-year average so become a beef producer as well and use those funds to make your herds better from the bottom up. It could also mean merchandising a really good one as they are still the ones with the most value. Our sales and merchandising committee is out looking for consignments for the Harvest Sale and if you have one that can be a great addition to the sale we would love to have her. We would also like you to come and seize the opportunities in our sale as well as the other sales that will be happening this fall. Best Regards, KJ

BREEDER PROFILE

GBM Holsteins Greg & Kim Moret, Richard & Kayla (Moret) Mensendike, Bryan & Grant Moret, Prairie du Chien by Ashley Yager Richard & Kayla Mensendike, Kim, Greg, Grant & Bryan Moret

small herd with a lot of heart, the Greg and Kim Moret family’s GBM Holsteins is holding its own when it comes to having success with elite genetics. Known worldwide for the GBM Durham BC Annabell family, the Morets have made a name for themselves and their 100% homebred herd in both the genetic marketplace and the show ring. Greg and Kim have called their farm just outside Prairie du Chien home for 31 years. They milk around 60 cows at a time, switching groups in their 42-stall barn. The Moret family owns 166 acres and rents an additional 68, raising their forages and purchasing grain. They run a 23,000 pound rolling herd average, and have bred and developed 120 Excellent cows. A family-run operation, Greg and Kim’s daughter Kayla spends four days a week at the farm to help chore and take care of the cows. Kayla is a graduate of UW-Platteville, and she and her husband, Richard, reside on a few acres in Illinois near his family crop operation. Kayla held a few jobs after graduation, but her love for the farm and taking care of cows won out and makes the weekly commute to Wisconsin worthwhile. The legacy of Annabell started in the early 1980s, when Greg and Kim purchased a Kanzanbrook Matt Carlo daughter, SylvanDell M C Janice, EX-91, as a foundation animal at an Indianhead Invitational sale. Janice gave the Morets an EX-92 Valiant daughter that was an excellent transmitting cow, as her daughters included an EX-94 Blackstar, an EX-94 Starbuck, and EX-93 Blackstar Janice, who went over 270,000 pounds of milk lifetime. GBM Val Blackstar Jean, EX-94, was the Janice daughter that produced EX-93 Charles Janelle and then the one and only Annabell. Jean’s brood cow performance was tremendous, as she produced a total of 13 Excellent daughters. After having three sets of twin bulls, Charles Janelle surprised the Morets at Christmas 2001 with what would eventually be her only natural heifer calf: Annabell. GBM Durham BC Annabell, EX-90, was the first heifer the Moret family won a class with at the Wisconsin State Fair. When she calved in, the Morets’ turned down an offer for her and it was the best decision they ever made. A prolific flush cow,

great transmitting family and solid numbers provided a second income for the farm. The Morets have had the opportunity to market over 3500 eggs in the last few years, with several sold to New York. Other countries that have felt Annabell’s influence include Japan, Germany, Canada, Australia, Brazil, Italy, Paraguay, Russia and Spain. Annabell left an impact through embryos and the success of her daughters. The Morets only have one milking daughter remaining from the powerhouse, GBM Annabells Annalise-ET EX-91, with a 5-00 record over 30,000 pounds of milk in 365 days. Annabell produced a total of 16 Excellent and 25 Very Good daughters, and has an Excellent son at Select Sires and a bull in Canada from the family. Another high performing daughter of Annabell was GBM Shottle Africa-ET, EX-90 DOM. Africa made 579 number one and number two embryos in her lifetime, and has two Excellent daughters to date sired by Fever and Redburst. Another daughter by Observer is Very Good at 2-08 with a 365 day record over 33,000 pounds of milk. Two of the Obersver’s daughters (sired by Uno and Mogul) sold for $40,000 each at the 2013 Party in the Park sale. Her sons by Uno and Mogul were sent to Semex. The Morets are also milking one Uno and two Mogul daughters, all at least Very Good and Very Good mammary systems as three-year-olds. On the show side, Mor-Yet Goldwyn Faithful EX-94, is a greatgranddaughter of Annabell and carries Greg’s brother Randy’s prefix.

GBM Durham BC Annabell EX-90

GBM Atwood Jill EX-90 amount of success in her 4-H days in Crawford County. The sale of embryos has been a great supplement to the Moret’s farm income, but with the amount of females produced, so has the ability to sell 20-25 cows a year. While they have had a tremendous amount of success, they are realistic about an exit strategy from the business. In the future, Greg and Kim would like to disperse the herd, while Kayla is looking for opportunities closer to her home. The Moret family has positioned themselves for success in years to come, no matter which direction their business takes.

Jill „ John Erbsen; Elvira „ Cybil Fisher

Faithful was sold as a young calf and ‘discovered’ walking the freestall in her new home out east as a young cow. She now lives at the Savage family farm, and in 2016 was Nominated All-American Aged Cow and captured Junior All-American Aged Cow honors. Faithful was Grand Champion of the Maryland Spring Show this spring; off to another successful start to her year in the show ring. Currently, the Moret family is working with GBM Atwood Jill, another Excellent granddaughter of Annabell. Jill is dry now, but due back to calve later this year with a heifer calf. The Morets are happy to have her around after a scare last year. After being floated and doing laser therapy for a spine injury, the Morets are looking forward to having the 2400 pound, 68 inch tall cow back in the barn. Jill has been flushed to Solomon, Jacoby, Sid and Doorman. She was the 2013 District 3 Show Junior Champion, and produced over 33,000 pounds of milk in her three-year-old lactation. Greg, Kim and Kayla have been fortunate to utilize some of the breed’s best in building their genetics. Durham played a key role early on, as eight of them went Excellent in the Moret herd. Shottle and Atwood have been key players, too, with 10 and three Excellent daughters, respectively. Young cows the Moret family is excited about include daughters of Beemer, Atwood, and McCutchen. In the semen inventory right now is Solomon, Crush, Doorman, Union, Atwood and Kingboy. With type breeding true at GBM, it’s no wonder the Moret family has had success on the local, district and state levels in the show ring. In 2017, the Morets captured Premier Breeder honors at the District 3 Holstein Show in Lancaster, having exhibited the winning winter calf, summer yearling, Junior Champion, Junior Best Three, third place junior two-year-old, second and third place four-year-olds, winning 150,000 lb. cow and first place Senior Best Three. Kayla has shown her way to many top ten finishes at both the Midwest Spring National and Wisconsin Championship Show, and had a great

2017 Wisconsin Championship Show The 58th annual Wisconsin Championship Show was held at the New Holland Pavilion on the Alliant Energy Center grounds in Madison, Wis., on July 11. Judge Mike Berry of Albany, OR, placed 127 head during the open Holstein show, including 72 heifers and 55 cows. Rosiers Blexy Goldwyn-ET repeated as Grand Champion honors for Budjon Farms, Vail, Woodmansee, Abbott and Van Exel. Reserve Champion honors went to Milk Source LLC with the Intermediate Champion, Trefle Chassep Doorman-ET. When selecting his champions, Judge Berry commented “These cows are my type of cows with tremendous dairy strength - the width, depth and power all the way through. The Senior Champion has that extreme dairy strength, being so wide and so massive, and she’s also your best uddered cow today. You love that height and width of rear udder as well as her seam. The Intermediate Champion has the advantage over the honorable mention with her advantage in being harder in the loin and more correct through her rump structure. Reserve Senior Champion went to the Red & White Grand Champion, Strans-Jen-D Tequila-Red-ET, owned by Milk Source LLC of Kaukauna. Reserve Intermediate Champion was the winning Senior 3-Year-Old, Lingle Gold Freaky Girl-ET owned by Peter & Lyn Vail and Budjon Farms of Lomira. Topping a fantastic heifer show was a pair of junior owned heifers. Noah Bilz had Junior Champion with his Summer Yearling, Petitclerc Atwood Spoutnik-ET. She got the nod over Emma Hendrickson’s winning Fall Calf, Jeffrey-Way New Romance. Judge Berry commented that the summer yearling is “a heifer that puts it all together. She has more strength and openness to the rib, love that rib and high chine and her extreme style on the move. The fall calf is just a little bit nicer and a little big deeper than the honorable mention (winter calf).” Also defending their titles from 2016 were the Premier Exhibitor and Premier Breeder. The Premier Exhibitor banner went to Milksource Genetics and Ryan-Vu Holsteins was named Premier Breeder. Congratulations to all of the exhibitors and thank you to all of the show and trophy sponsors that helped make the show a success. Class Changes Coming for the 2018 National Holstein Shows

BRATTLEBORO, VT: The Holstein Association USA, Inc. board of directors made some progressive moves to update the list of uniform classes for 2018 Fall National Holstein Shows. The Fall Yearling class will be removed and an optional Summer Calf class will be added. The 2017 Fall National Holstein Show classes will remain unchanged. Fall Shows are defined as the Midwest Fall Show at Minnesota State Fair and those held afterwards, including the Northeast Fall Show in Springfield, Mass., the Eastern Fall Show in Harrisburg, Pa., the Mideast Fall Show in Louisville, Ky., and the International Show at World Dairy Expo. For junior recognition, transfers must be received by August 1 for animals in the Summer Calf class only. For all other classes, the June 1 junior transfer deadline remains. “Registered Holsteins have continued to make great strides in profitability, and especially fertility. We feel that Fall Yearlings should be in milking form by the fall show season. Adding a Summer Calf class will offer another opportunity for exhibitors, especially Junior members, to participate in the show,” says Show Committee Chairman Mike Jones. The Uniform Class List can be found in the Holstein Association USA, Inc. annual Show Program. It can be found at www.holsteinusa.com, National Shows, then National Show Program. The program also contains rules that National Holstein Shows are expected to follow to maintain that designation. With questions, contact Jodi Hoynoski 800.952.5200 ext. 4261 or jhoynoski@holstein.com.

Premier Breeder & Exhibitor – District 1 Crisdhome Farm, New Richmond Chuck, Mary, Jake, Jade, Joe, Pete & David Kruschke Employees: Tyler Moore & Ellis Frank Herd Info: 95 cows BAA: 112.7% RHA: 2x 26,107 3.8 988 3.1 797 District Show Herd: 11 head shown & 9 were homebred Current sires being used: Doorman, Atwood, Solomon, Dempsey, Gold Chip, Defiant and Damion. Breeding philosophies/herd goals: Our breeding philosophy is to breed for balanced framed cows with youthful udders, functional feet and legs, wide level rumps and a wide chest while managing for milk. We believe in using bulls that have proven their ability to consistently transmit the traits that we would like to improve in our herd over bulls who are out of unproven sires and unfresh dams. Goals would be to continue to breed from the cow families we have now and the ones we’ve recently added including the Gold Maes, Roxys, Goldwyn Africa, Leader Melanie, Redrose, Dellia and Audrey Poschs, while looking to make an addition out of one name cow families we believe will continue to breed true. Comment on the animals that contributed to the winning of this award: Indianhead GM Windy, EX-93, is a cow that has caught our eye for several years both in the barn at Indianhead and at our district show in the past. We made the decision to purchase her at their dispersal in April and she was named Grand and Senior Champion for us. Crisdhome Gchip Troubadour, VG-88, is a Gold Chip daughter out of three EX homebred dams who won the Senior 3-year-old class and was also named Intermediate Champion and Champion Bred and Owned. Her herdmate, Atwood Hipster, placed 2nd in the Senior 3-year-old class as well. Crisdhome Damion Crunk was the winning Winter Calf and was named Reserve Junior Champion. Her dam is an EX-90 3-year-old Gold Chip daughter that is an 11th generation EX.

Bulls used in 2017 are Capital Gain, High Octane, Byway, McCutchen, Defiant, Deman, Renegade, Monterey, Merrick, Silver, Cotton, Royal and Affluent-Red. Breeding philosophies/herd goals: The thing we are most proud of is that they are homebred animals and that our children can show at various shows and do well with their last name as the prefix. As with any dairy, we are always trying to improve milk production and quality of the animal. Our herd goal would be to have that Expo cow that is home grown that we could market her offspring. Comment on the animals that contributed to the winning of this award: The 4-year-old Aftershock won her class, she is scored EX-90 in dairy strength and EX-90 in mammary with a final score of VG-86. She is definitely an eye catcher at the feed rail. The Champion Junior Bred and Owned cow by Atwood is GP-83 and VG-85 in the mammary. The 6-year-old Bogard scored EX-91 in frame and dairy strength and VG-86 in mammary with a final score of VG-87. She was third in her class and first bred and owned.

Troy Noble and Nobland Chairman Dainty EX-93

If you work in the Registered Holstein industry, especially as a breeder, chances are high that one cow played a special part in making the decision to have a career in agriculture. This month, WHA continues the #OneBlackandWhite campaign, focusing on that one black and white Holstein cow that had an im-pact on one young breeder’s life. For the Troy Noble family of Lancaster, Nobland Chairman Dainty EX-93 fostered an early bug for the show ring and set the tone for a lifetime breeding high type Registered Holsteins. A February 18th calf, Dainty was lucky to make the show ring a few times as a winter yearling. By the time she was a two-year-old, the Noble family knew they had a special one. When she was first shown as a two-year-old in the early 1990s, junior and senior two-year-olds were exhibited together. Troy’s sisters, Robin and Dena, showed against each other and Robin came out on top. Troy remembers specifically, though, the judge’s comments from that day when he said, “Watch out for this second place cow (Dainty) in the future.” Troy’s late sister Dena was at Dainty’s halter throughout her show career, when she earned accolades that included Reserve AllWisconsin and Reserve Junior All-Wisconsin three-year-old, and Reserve Grand Champion of the Junior Show at state show. Dainty and a cow from the Barrett family farm battled it out all summer, and the pair were again crowned champion and reserve at the Wisconsin Junior State Fair that year (1991). Dainty showed at state show almost every year after her debut at that level in 1991, calving every year in February. In fact, she made a five-year stretch showing at the state level, placing no lower than second at each of those State Fair shows. Dainty and Dena were reserve or honorable mention champion each year, too. It was not until Dena graduated and Troy decided Dainty needed one last run at State Fair that she captured the champion title at the coveted junior show in 1995. Troy’s father, Dennis, remembers very specifically the details of the walk the Noble family made to the Supreme Champion leadout on Sunday evening of State Fair 1995. “Dainty was Grant County’s cow. The year she was grand, every kid from the county walked behind her to the ring for the supreme drive. I’ve never seen a county follow a cow that way. The kids even had a chant ready if she won.” Dainty was unfortunately not crowned Supreme Champion that day, but her legacy and that experience live on in Grant County. It was her performance that sparked the Parade of Champions on Sunday of the Grant County Fair, an event in which the champions and showmanship winners dress in their best and are recognized for

their efforts. It’s a chance for all of the kids to get excited, talk about the year’s accomplishments, recognize the youth and for adults to show support for the junior dairy members in their county. For Troy (and Dena), Dainty was ‘the’ perennial show cow that juniors in the show circle hope to have. She not only took two of the Noble kids to the winner’s circle, but her success has inspired the next generation to excel as well. Troy and wife Jaime and their family have always been a part of the show ring, and their three children, Drew, Ainsley and Macie have been able to have success there, too. In fact, the Noble crew had two class winners and a second place two-yearold at the 2017 Junior State Fair in West Allis. The kids have a will to work and a desire to do well in the show ring, and their experiences have peaked their interest in being involved in the operation for years to come. While Troy and his family have very few descendants of Dainty in their herd, her success helped put Nobland on the map and lit the fire for a lifetime of success in the Holstein industry. The Noble family, including Dennis and Rita, Troy and Jaime and family, completed a beautiful parlor and freestall facility in spring of this year, and is now milking just over 200 head three times a day. The Nobles are excited to continue developing cows, being active in the show ring, and making the most of opportunities that Registered Holsteins bring their way.

Wisconsin Holstein Young Adult Members by Ashley Yager

Hillary Hartley Hillary Hartley has put a lifetime of Registered Holstein and Junior Holstein Association involvement to good use. This 26-yearold, 3-wheeler driving farmer’s daughter is heavily involved in the home farm, but has also used her talents to reach youth in southwest Wisconsin while supplementing income on a small family farm operation. Hillary was studying for a dairy science degree when she started at UW-Madison, but after her reign as the Wisconsin Holstein Princess and opportunity to educate kids in the classroom, she found a love for teaching and switched majors to focus on education. A typical day in the summer for Hillary now includes tutoring out of her home after completion of some farm duties. She helps feed the calves, milks while her dad switches their 10-cow switch group, and cleans up the barn when the cows go out to pasture. Depending on the day, Hillary helps with fieldwork. During the school year, however, Hillary is committed to teaching middle schoolers at Westby where she is a reading specialist. She continues to help on nights and weekends during the school year, but is thankful for the teaching position that helps both financially and by providing insurance. With her love of animals, it’s no surprise that Hillary’s favorite things on the farm are taking care of the cows and feeding calves. In fact, something that makes the Hartley’s family operation unique is they want to stay ‘small’ and focus on being an elite herd. They are content with 70-100 cows on test, and hope to some day show a cow at World Dairy Expo. In the near future, Hillary is excited to focus on planning her wedding and next chapter with fiancé Alex, a young man she met after her mom paid for a one-month subscription so she could see a message from him via farmersonly.com. The couple has been together for over two years now, and Alex is now a large part of the Hartley’s daily workforce. Alex did not grow up on a farm, but rode his bike over five miles every day to get to his grandparents’ farm after school. He has been learning more on the registered side of the business from Hillary, and the two plan to purchase animals together in the future as a start of a potential farm transition. When it comes to farming, there’s no doubt the passion is in Hillary’s blood. Her maternal grandfather, Don Walters, instilled the values in his daughter and granddaughters through his success as a producer. Hillary strives every day to be like her grandparents by working hard to take good care of great cows. Like many Registered Holstein breeders, Hillary is excited to watch the continued development of every generation in the herd. She likes to see animals calve in and develop over time, and appreciates the challenge of trying to improve calves. Hillary is well aware of some of the challenges the industry is facing, especially when she catches it in the school setting. She admits

Serving as Wisconsin Holstein Princess 40–wisconsin HOLSTEIN news/September 2017

Hillary Hartley & fiancé Alex Jochimsen there is a missing connection with consumers, from coconut milk to GMO stigmas and puss in milk, but realizes there is not enough hours in the day for farmers to put out all of these fires. While student teaching in New Zealand in 2014, Hillary had the chance to teach for three weeks when she put together an entire unit about farming and dairy. The kids had very little knowledge about the industry; a disappointing stat when the country is so dairy driven. While she’s not focusing her attention on kids and classes from school, Hillary enjoys working with the next generation – her nieces and nephews. Already bitten by the show bug, Natalie, Weston, Emma and Grant come to the farm each week and work hard to get their animals ready for the ring. Hillary and Alex are excited to continue working together while learning and making gradual changes at the Hartleys’ family farm. As young farmers they’ve learned a great deal about being patient and working with Hillary’s parents, Dean and Donna. “It’s important to remember our parents have worked many years to get here,” Hillary commented. “Some days are easier than others.” Some of the things Hillary and Alex hope to improve in the future include the timing of harvesting crops, breeding heifers to calve at a younger age, and incorporating AgSource reports to manage breeding dates throughout the herd. Hillary is excited for the future and the ability to do what makes her and fiancé Alex happy, and there is no doubt that happiness is found in farming and the ability to raise a family on the farm.

Kelsey Lynn Fills You In Happy September, Holstein enthusiasts! Summer may be winding down, but the business of fall is setting in as kids go back to school, college students move back to campus and county fairs wind down. For some of us, corn silage harvest and Holstein classifications are right around the corner, and I wish you all the best with both! District shows, fairs and futurities have been the highlights of the past few months, and one of the best parts of these events has been handing out ribbons. Hundreds of ribbons have passed through my hands now, and with each one, I’ve had the chance to connect with the members of our association. From the first time 10 and under exhibitors to those who have exhibited almost their entire lifetime, it’s been my pleasure to be a part of making memories for others and their favorite Holsteins. Some of the ribbons have been big and beautiful, like the one presented to the Reserve Champion at State Show, while others have been heartwarming as they are in memory of someone like the Junior Champion Female at the District 6 Show for Austin Martin. But I’ve learned that no matter how big or small, or what color that ribbon might be, it holds a special value to the recipient. It’s silly to think now that when I started my year as Princess Attendant, handing out ribbons was one of the things I worried about most. I was afraid of passing out the wrong awards! Fortunately, our association had two wonderful summer interns that I was able to work with: Krista and Jill. These ladies deserve so much credit for always bringing the ribbons to the shows from the office, helping me organize ribbons before shows started, and just being someone that I could count on to help make certain everyone got the right award! Another thing I realized is that all of those ribbons, plaques, trophies and other awards would not be possible without the generous sponsorship of businesses, farms, associations and individuals that support Wisconsin Holsteins. Thank you for seeing the value in what these items mean to the individuals who receive them! Finally, if you are looking for one more chance to take home a ribbon for the 2017 show season, remember World Dairy Expo is less than one month away, where we may all “Discover New Dairy Worlds.” I encourage all junior members to participate in the junior show and showmanship contest. This is a great opportunity to show on the colored shavings if you never have before. The International Junior Holstein Show is Tuesday, October 3, at 7:15 a.m., and the showmanship contest takes place on Thursday, October 5, at 6 p.m. I’ll see you all on the colored shavings soon! Until the next time that I can fill you in, Kelsey Cramer

The University of

WISCONSIN MADISON Dairy Science

STUDENT PROFILE Name: Elizabeth Sarbacker Hometown: Verona, WI School: Verona Area H.S. Class Size: about 400 Farm: Fischerdale Holsteins Major: Dairy Science with Agriculture Business Management Certificate Why did you decide to attend UW-Madison? I chose UW-Madison because of my passion for the dairy cow. I fell in love with the dairy industry by following around my four older brothers and father on the farm. They all attended UW-Madison majoring in Dairy Science. I heard first-hand about the university and the world-renowned Dairy Science program. When it came time for me to go to college, I knew there was only one place and one major for me. I am so thankful to have grown up on a dairy farm so that I could find my passion. I’m grateful for the choice I made because I am absolutely loving every part of UW-Madison and the Dairy Science major. What has been your most memorable college experience? My most memorable college experiences are outside of the classroom - the people I meet in the clubs that I have joined. When I started college, I became a member of the Association of Women in Agriculture, Badger Dairy Club, Collegiate Farm Bureau, Collegiate Judging Team, and National Agri-Marketing Association. These clubs allowed me to meet and grow strong relationships with peers that led to memories and experiences that will last a lifetime. What has been your favorite course? I don’t have a favorite class, but I enjoy the classes that are hands-on and applicable to real life situations. For example, I like to learn in the classroom then have a lab where I can apply what I just learned. What are your future career goals? I would like to pursue a marketing career in the dairy industry. More specifically, I would like to have a job where I can benefit farmers. I would like to stay in Wisconsin, hopefully near my home farm. I would love to help on my family’s dairy farm where my passion started. This way I can motivate myself to work hard for the producers and come home to see it pay off on a family-owned dairy farm.

BRATTLEBORO, VT: Holstein Foundation is excited to announce the release of a four-part video series to educate youth, showmanship judges, and anyone else who works with dairy youth on proper showmanship procedures. The videos are created as a supplement to the Holstein Foundation’s Showring Ready workbook. Both are based on the latest PDCA showmanship guidelines. The videos are available to watch for free on the Holstein Foundation website and YouTube channel. “Showmanship is near and dear to my heart, and we are thrilled to provide free and easily accessible resources to youth across the country. Our goal is to help everyone involved in showing understand the new PDCA guidelines, and give visual demonstrations on some of the most common questions,” says Jodi Hoynoski, Holstein Foundation Programs Manager. The video series is designed to serve as a guide for youth, parents and dairy project leaders who are interested in learning the ins and outs of dairy cattle showmanship, things like what to wear in the ring, basic preparations that should be made with your animal, as well as the guidelines to follow for leading and setting up your animal in the showring. Along with a detailed “Showmanship Resources” section on Holstein Foundation’s website, the videos may also be found on our YouTube Channel. The four videos, each about four minutes in length, cover the following topics: Showring Ready: What to Wear & How to Act This video covers the essential things dairy showmen should wear in the ring, how they should act while showing their animal, and things every showman should know about their dairy animal before entering the showring. Showring Ready: Appearance of Your Animal & Proper Equipment UW-Madison Inquiry Lives Here This video covers preparations to ensure your animal is ready for the showmanship ring. A note from your JACs

Hey Juniors! I hope everyone’s summers have gone well with shows, fairs, and every other summer activity. I know my summer has been a good one. A quick recap, the Taste or State Fair that was held Wednesday night of the state fair was a hit. We had about 100 juniors come and take part in the fun games that your Junior Activities Committee put on in the coliseum. Some of the games included a catapult, poop the potato, a tic tac toe relay, and inflation toss. With show season coming to a close, just a reminder to you all of World Dairy Expo coming up in about a month. If you plan on showing, remember to get your entries in. I hope to see you all there in October. Another quick reminder about an extremely important upcoming date - September 20. On September 20, Junior Award forms are due to the Holstein office. These award forms include Distinguished Junior Member, Young Distinguished Junior Member, 12 and Under Award, and Royalty Applications. I encourage everybody to fill out these award forms this year. On a final note, with junior convention coming quicker than we can imagine, remember to fill out your Long Range Production Award forms for your production cows. Also start thinking about educational ideas to make a folding display to compete in the folding display competition at junior convention. Editor’s Comments

This issue is a wrap up to the summer shows and I hope you’ll enjoy catching up on the results from our District Shows and the Championship Show series. Our show numbers were down overall, but the quality of animals brought out continues to impress. Next month’s issue will include the results from the Wisconsin State Fair and WHA Holstein Futurity. The October issue is also a Midwest Holsteins issue and we’ll be handing out extra copies at our booth at World Dairy Expo. If you’d like to get some extra exposure for your ad, please give me a call or email by September 8 to reserve your ad space. I’ll also be working on the 2018 Breeder Calendar shortly and we’ll have that ready for World Dairy Expo. Months are assigned on a first-come, first-served basis so give me a call to reserve your desired month soon! This is a fantastic opportunity to keep your advertising message in front of our members and subscribers for a month at a time. We have hundreds of great photos from all the summer shows on our Facebook page. If you’d like a copy of any of our photos, please email or call our offices to put in your request - we’ll be glad to share email copies for free and print copies for a small fee. Thanks to our two great summer interns, Jill Seiler and Krista Styer. They were behind the camera at most of our District shows and did a great job keeping accurate placings and updating the results in a timely fashion. Jill was also a big part of getting our new website launched and Krista was the main force behind this year’s Futurity. It was a pleasure working with both and I’m sure you’ll see them doing big things in the future. A reminder that we’re looking for photo submissions for our annual cover contest. If you have an eye-catching photo that you think would make a great cover, you can email a 300 dpi, 5x7 copy (or larger) to me at lauraw@wisholsteins.com, or you can mail a copy to PO Box 49, Lancaster, WI 53813. This month’s issue also includes the latest in our series of #OneBlackandWhite and Young Adult features - if you would like to suggest someone that we should be writing about, please give us a call! Until next time...
