turkey For sheer diversity, it’s hard to beat Turkey. The country seems to exist in multitudes of people, of natural landscapes, of cultures. It is a land of vast open spaces, massive mountain ranges, fertile valley, fast-growing cities and sleepy villages, bustling seaside resorts and unfrequented beaches. It may surprise visitors with the depth of the cultural melting-pot, not just in the major cities but across the country. A rich history has continually shaped Turkey, the country overflows with historic sites and archaeological wonders set in a varied and beautiful landscape. The Mediterranean coastline is punctuated with wellpreserved Greco-Roman cities such as Pergamom and Ephesus, while the austere and rugged Anatolian plateau has cave churches hidden away in the fairytale landscape of Cappadocia. Aside from the historical relics, there’s much to be admired about modern-day Turkey. Visitors to Istanbul will be overwhelmed with choices. There are Roman aqueducts, Byzantine churches and Ottoman mosques and palaces to see. But there are also cafes to frequent, Grand Bazaars to thrill at, hammams to visit and clubs to dance the night away in. The city thrums with constant hustle and bustle. However deep its past, Turkey is now a thrusting and dynamic society that is navigating cultural, economic and political change while consciously seeking to retain the best of its multicultural heritage and time-honored traditions of hospitality.

Short Break in Istanbul 3 Nights / 01 November 2014 – 31 March 2015
More than Ottoman minarets and beguiling bazaars, Turkey’s cultural capital is also fashionable and progressive. Spanning both Asia and Europe and divided by the Bosphorus, Istanbul is a beguiling mix of ancient and modern, of conservative and secular. The hulking Byzantine Hagia Sophia and opulent Topkapi Palace dominate the old city Sultanahmet. Over in Karaköy, in a converted warehouse, the Istanbul Museum of Modern Art embraces the future. From

not to be missed TAKE A BOAT UP THE BOSPHORUS A boat ride along the Bosphorus is one of the most enjoyable ways to see the sprawling, magnificent city of Istanbul. From the ferry’s vantage point, you’ll see beautiful landmarks and exquisite waterfront mansions. SCRUB DOWN IN A TURKISH BATH Before the era of indoor plumbing, going to a hamam, or public bath, was a central element of Turkish life. Today many beautiful centuries-old hammams are still in use, by both locals and tourists. STAY IN A CAVE HOTEL Where but in Cappadocia can you sleep like the Flintstones while having all your creature comforts? Few of Cappadocia’s inhabitants still live in traditional homes carved out of the soft tufa stone, but in recent years the area’s hoteliers have been converting more and more of these “cave” dwellings into hotels WATCH THE DERVISHES WHIRL Despite the fact that these dervish ceremonies have become increasingly tourist-oriented in recent years, attending a sema can still be a powerful and mesmerizing experience. QUENCH YOUR THIRST LIKE THE LOCALS A trip to Turkey isn’t complete without sampling certain essential Turkish beverages. You can barely go anywhere without being offered a glass of çay, or tea and the famous Turkish coffee. For something cold, try the ayran, a salted yogurt drink that’s a refreshing accompaniment to a spicy meal of kebabs. Another unique beverage is salep, a sweet, milk-based hot drink. Don’t forget to taste the anise-flavored national liquor, rakı. EXPERIENCE AND APPRECIATE DIFFERENT RELIGIONS Turkey is a cultural crossroads where the world’s three Abrahamic religions have coexisted for centuries, and one of the most surprising things for many visitors is the way these religions are juxtaposed. TURKISH CUISINE You can find a great variety of mouth watering dishes in Turkish cuisine which is mostly the heritage of Ottoman cuisine. It is the mixture and refinement of Central Asian, Middle Eastern and Balkan cuisines.
