“LA IMPLANTOLOGÍA ES EL MÉTODO MÁS FIABLE Y RÁPIDO DE REPONER LOS DIENTES” La clínica dental Art&Dent de Valencia es un centro odontólogico de implantologia. “Pocas veces utilizamos la anestesia general porque generalmente es suficiente aplicar la anestesia local. THE INSIDE DEAL ON FALLAS MASCLETÁ Daytime fireworks are a very Valencian contribution to the world of pyrotechnics. Forget about pretty pictures in the sky, this is all about noise, rhythm, the smell of gunpowder and having your bones thoroughly shaken by the ferocious aural assault of the finale. All this under blue spring skies, amongst a huge and expectant crowd in the Plaza del Ayuntamiento as the excitement and tension builds while you await the opening salvoes. People love their loud bangs and air bombs round these parts. The pyrotechnician is loudly acclaimed and carried out on the shoulders of his fans at the end of a good show. What a fallero would say: A sublime musical symphony, a celebration of Valencian culture in fire and smoke. What a fallero would never say: Rhythm my arse. That was just a random load of loud bangs. And you’re telling me I’ve stood in this square for 45 minutes next to those loons in the straw Amstel hats for this? Insider knowledge: The mascletá is best enjoyed after a few prebombardment beers and a plate of patatas bravas, but make sure you get into the square a good half an hour before it starts and get settled in somewhere near the post office building. There’s a great view from there and you can usually get out pretty quick when it’s all over. Must see: Once you’ve seen the big one, try and see at least one mascletá at a barrio falla. Sit outside a bar with a beer, you can get closer, there are less people, and it feels just as ferocious and in some ways more authentic. Most

importantly, you won’t be squashed up against those blokes in the Amstel hats. Don’t bother: If you are running late, don’t bother going. Save it for another day. Mascletás are meant to be experienced close up. There’s nothing worse than hearing it from round the corner without seeing or feeling it in all its glory. CASTILLO If you prefer your firework displays in the more traditional manner at night, you’ll see some of the best you’ve ever seen at Las Fallas (honestly). This being Valencia, they’ll also no doubt be the noisiest. Valencia’s top firework bods are in demand all over the world. Valencians have been responsible for the fireworks at Olympic closing ceremonies and the World Cup final in South Africa. They compete with each other to produce the fastest, most original and loudest explosions of light and sound with huge multi-coloured asteroids lighting up the Alameda and the faces of the ooohing-and-aaahing crowds. What a fallero would say: What could be better than the fruits of the Valencia countryside, its palms and colourful flowers portrayed in the night sky of this majestic city? What a fallero would never say: Not those caterpillars on parachutes again! Boring! Where’s my gin & tonic? Insider knowledge: Get yourself a good spot about half way down the Alameda on the Viveros side (the smoke always blows the other way, towards Avenida Aragón). Watch out for the unofficial firework wars in the riverbed before and after, they are not for the faint hearted. Must see: Without doubt, the Nit del Foc on the night of the 18th. Don’t bother: No half measures, it’s impossible just to pop over 10 minutes

before. It’s got to be part of your plan for the evening. There’s no point watching it half-obscured by some building. If you are going to go, get there early and wait. FOOD AND DRINK Valencia is especially famous for its rice dishes but it’s not that easy to get the best paella in Fallas. This is probably the worst time of year to eat in Valencia. Everywhere is packed out, prices go up, menus are reduced, quality goes down, the waiters and chefs are worn out. Buñuelos (basically deep fried doughnuts) stalls spring up all over the city where you can get the traditional fallero breakfast of hot chocolate and churros. As for drinking, Valencia has no shortage of night spots and in Fallas they are all full and lively. If you are really desperate for a beer, you are never far away from a bloke selling cans of Steinberg out of a shopping trolley. What a fallero would say: I’ve already eaten, thanks, and anyway we’ve got a barbecue tonight at the casal. What a fallero would never say: Have you been frying those doughnuts in the same oil all week? Insider knowledge: Book yourself into a decent restaurant for at least one sit down meal. There are some excellent tapas bars around Valencia, for example. You’ll need a break from all those bocadillos on the hoof. Somewhere off the main thoroughfares and squares is probably your best bet. The barrio of Ruzafa might be a good starting point. Must see: If you get the chance, sign up for a paella competition at a falla. Street party, good food, plenty to drink and guaranteed good fun, the paella is the least of it. As far as nightlife is concerned, you have to have at least few dodgy gin & lemons at a verbena, that’s what it is all about after all.

Don’t bother: Avoid those tourist trap expensive menus in the centre. Don’t spend all night in a bar, get out on the streets and get involved. THE FALLAS MONUMENTS The monuments are at the centre of the whole festival. Like huge threedimensional saucy seaside postcards, their core purpose is to satirise life in the city or the neighbourhood, poking fun at politicians and celebrities in papiermâché. There are more than 300 around the city, commissioned, and in some cases built, by the local neighbourhood fallas. They are divided into categories depending on how much money was spent on their construction. Monuments from the top division (Sección Especial) can cost up to 500,000 euros. What a fallero would say: A true combination of art and wit. The fallas

artist is the modern day Michelangelo for the people.

Insider Knowledge: Get yourself outside a bar in the Plaza de la Reina and you can sit there watching it all go past. Our personal favourite is the grassy knoll outside Finnegan’s pub on St Patrick’s Day. As a bonus you might even also catch a few people in ‘traditional’ Irish costume (a big Guinness hat and a green T-shirt). Must See: The flower arrangements by night in the Plaza de la Virgen once the Ofrenda has finished. Don’t Bother: Don’t try to get around too much in the centre of the city while

This is where the party ends but without the flames of the Cremá the festival means nothing. It is a symbol of purification, the burning away of all the bad spirits of winter, clearing the way for the coming of spring. In previous centuries, fallas (made of old furniture and junk) were a great way of getting rid of all your old rubbish. With explosions and flames and firemen all over the city centre, the Cremá feels like the nearest thing you can get to being in an air raid without actually being in a war. The experience of running around with the city in flames will stay with you when the rest of Las Fallas are a distant memory.

What a fallero would say: What day does Fallas fall on next year? What a fallero would never say: I shudder to think what effect all this smoke is having on the environment. Insider Knowledge: Don’t have a fixed plan. Be prepared to keep on the move. The burnings in each neighbourhood are staggered. Follow the firemen around to see as many as possible. Must See: Try and see at least one big falla burn, but if you can get to see a smaller one in a narrow street, you’ll really get the feel of it. Don’t Bother: Don’t wait for hours in the Plaza del Ayuntamiento to see the big falla burn and, in the process, miss everything else that is going on around you. I once tried to explain this to an interviewer at Time Out with the old joke about a gentleman being “someone who can play the bagpipes but doesn’t”. How do you find life being a musician in Spain?

MIKE MCKOY Tell us something about background and experiences…

your

My perspective has changed over the years, and I’ve mellowed quite a bit. I enjoy wry humour, which might tempt me to frame my background as something out of an Edvard Munch painting. But that would be nonsense, and perhaps pernicious – because not only have I had it easy, I’ve also learned to reconcile contradictions where there might otherwise be divergence. I was born and grew up in Luton, with a German mother and a Jamaican father. I think Aristotle was right when he said, “Give me the child until he is seven and I will show you the man.” At the age of seven, I was introverted and conscientious – and in that regard, I haven’t changed at all. One of the biggest changes for me since the ‘60s was from being a schoolboy to becoming a schoolteacher. But the biggest change of all was getting actively involved in music. I’ve had many memorable musical experiences, such as performing aboard the ‘Majesty of the Seas’ for Royal Caribbean, touring the UK in musical

theatre (I’m a former National Youth Theatre full-production cast member), and opening for Elvin Jones at London's Ronnie Scott's (I lead a packed house in a round of 'Happy Birthday' on the night of Elvin's 70th). However, my most valued musical experience by far is having known and spent quality time with bop guitarist Sean Levitt. What is jazz for you?

On a personal level, it’s meditation and therapy. In the grand scheme of things, it’s an opportunity for catharsis and renewal – both personal and social. It’s also about teamwork and cooperation; each individual player’s will and intention needs to be subordinated to a collective purpose which – paradoxically – unites the group while also supporting individual self-expression. I’d rather play alone than play without shared purpose and values, because all you end up with is tribalism – a kind of ‘jazz Babel’ – with everyone playing by different rules. For me, jazz is rhythmically nuanced, blues-infused, spontaneous melodic counterpoint. It’s the intuitive application of those rules for establishing order in chaos. I don’t care for highbrow, nor for condescension in the name of ‘entertainment’, but I have a particular aversion to the music of what

If I were to funnel my energies into full-time music, I’d probably do it from right here in Valencia because the opportunities for creative collaboration are first-rate. But as I’m more concerned with wholeness as a person than with perfection as a professional musician, I much prefer being an amateur – in the literal sense of ‘one who loves’ – with a healthy work-life balance. I do what I have to do so I can do what I want to do, and my teaching job at The Learning Bus makes this sustainable and fun. I enjoy – from a distance – the blend of subcultures in the music scene here, but not at all the marginalisation and impoverishment of musicians. Could you give us a synopsis of your latest album, ‘Ludwig Manhattan’s Germaican Blues’?

It’s a concept album of spoken word and songs: an exploration of the question, “Could you bloom wherever you’d been planted?” through a magical tale of Ludwig’s adventures on his journey to happiness (eudaimonia) and selfreliance.

I use the same guitars live, except I’ve gone back to Ovation Classic for the nylon sound – acoustic amps have come a long way since the ‘80s. I also use an Ibanez AG95 (for the small body) and a Fender Squire Vintage Modified ‘72 Telecaster Thinline for the range. Could you tell us something about the other musicians who feature on this album?

They’re superb. The playing on the songs was done without amplification in order to honour the vintage style, although keyboard player Vicent Colonques provides just the right tone for the more modern songs and to accompany the narrative. The virtuoso double bass playing of Matt Baker really shines throughout the album, and Ignacio Aguilar’s judicious use of the didgeridoo to mysterious and haunting effect in parts of the narrative is simply marvellous. Turia Studios did a fantastic job of letting the playing speak for itself through the recording, but these words from the liner notes by Dave Gelly MBE are worth repeating in full: “Listen out for Toni Belenguer's slippery trombone and Ignacio Aguilar's blues harmonica – they're outstanding.”

Gardens this month, and on Sunday, 2 April we’re at the Estudio Loft-Social in Ruzafa.

handlebar moustaches. We might then ask: is veganism just a fleeting fashion

in Valencia? A cynic might question the

longevity

this

enthusiasm,

especially if it is not combined with the philosophical and ethical thinking which

underpins vegan life. Yet around the world the figures show an increasing

number of ethical vegans and more and more people who chose vegan

food for health reasons, environmental

concerns or the love of discovering new,

VIVA LA VALENCIA VEGANA! Being a vegan in Valencia has not always been easy. Despite being blessed with the climate and the huerta which gifts a year-round supply of delicious fruit and vegetables, veganism as a movement has seemed slower to take off here than in some other parts of Europe. A vegan in Valencia quickly learns the importance of being able to explain to restaurant staff, shop assistants, friends, neighbours… exactly what being a vegan is and why on earth you might choose to be one. You get used to being reminded that being a vegan excludes you from eating jamón. You maintain a smile while explaining that tuna is not, in fact, a vegetable. But things are definitely changing. I realised this recently when I queued for 30 minutes to get into a vegan event and when I saw the swarms of people going in and out of a multitude of restaurants on the recent Ruta de la Tapa Vegana organised by La Feria Vegana. There is no doubt that vegan living in Valencia is getting easier and the food options and new-found creativity that it brings is being embraced by vegans and

delicious food. non-vegans alike. If the popularity of veganism and related events continues, it may not be so long until Valencia can rival Madrid or Barcelona as the most vegan-friendly city in Spain. Valencia now has around 20 specialist vegan and vegetarian restaurants and numerous others that offer wellthought-out vegan options. One of the first restaurants I went to when I arrived in Valencia 4½ years ago was Copenhagen in Ruzafa, which offers modern vegan and vegetarian food and remains popular with herbivores and omnivores. This seemed a revelation in itself, until I discovered so many other fantastic choices already in existence and with more options seemingly opening by the month. Nehuen near the port offers delicious, jaw-droppingly affordable options in El Grau, while more central venues include Nomït on Gran Vía Marqués del Turia with its tapas and burgers. A new favourite of mine, Aloha, with its healthy take-away food is to be found on C/ Caballeros in the old town. If you want a serving of vegan philosophy and culture with your delicious meal and the opportunity to meet like-minded eaters, I also highly recommend the La Mandrágora and La Regadera associations. Búho Bio, on C/ Murillo near the Torres de Quart, also offers vegan dishes in a cosy, cultured and relaxed atmosphere.

Valencia, I believe, will follow a similar pattern of growth. Many of the Valencian

events, such as the Feria Vegana, and

animal rights NGOs are backing this movement with the education and ethics needed to ensure that the trend becomes a better understood and more

widely supported life choice. In fact this growth is already tangible with the

Feria Vegana, which already attracted

nearly 1,300 visitors last year. It is set to expand into a bigger venue this year to accommodate increased demand.

Furthermore, the vegan calendar on

Google now shows at least one type of

vegan event happening every week in the city, including talks, cooking courses

and specialist food nights. With this increased diversity of choice, vegan lifestyles in Valencia look very much like

they are getting settled and are here to stay.

So what does it all mean for you?

I suggest that whether you are a committed vegan, a new breed of flexivegan or chegan (a cheating vegan),

or simply an omnivore who fancies seeing what this whole vegan thing is about, that you open yourself up to

TAPAS BAR OF THE MONTH

EL OLIVO Friends of ours live very close to where we were to dine for this month’s article, so we arranged to call in on them for a pre-dinner drink to catch up on their recent trip to Andorra. We left a glass or two of a very nice red wine later and walked through the Barrio del Carmen’s flooded streets under the cover of a huge (loaned) umbrella to El Olivo. Now, El Olivo is tiny - there are two tables indoors the rest is a terrace that surrounds an old and very large olive tree. Inside was full and the people sitting eating looked in no hurry to leave, outside it was still pouring down and didn’t look like letting up for some time, so we arranged to return the next evening at the same time. We arrived (with our friends from the Friday night) to find the terrace greatly reduced and heaving - the manager found us a little corner to wait until a real table came free, which came quite quickly and we sat and asked for wine

and a selection of their best tapas. We savoured a bottle of Hacienda Zorita, a smooth red Arribes del Duero crianza 2013 and very soon the food started to arrive. First up were Calamares a la Romana (deep fried rings of squid) and Pescadito frito (whitebait - but slightly larger) - both were excellent. Next came champiñones (whole mushrooms) which were so hot and freshly cooked that we all burnt our mouths! They were, once they had cooled down, delicious! Next came pinchos morunos con pimientos de padrón (grilled spiced pork kebabs, served with little green chilis, famous for being quite mild and sweet with the odd one fiery and hot). The meat was tender and very tasty and the peppers mild and sweet! All these dishes were served on wooden platters to share. It was a beautiful sunny day and every few minutes another group of Falleras and Falleros, paraded through the terrace with their banners and ribbons showing the prizes already won for

singing and fancy dress etc. The terrace continued to be full with people waiting for tables and a constant stream of tourists and falleros passing by. The kitchen here is minute and we all marvelled at how they were able to keep up with the orders with very little waiting The owners of El Olivo are Eva and Carlos - Eva came over to our table and chatted about the bar and hoped we were having a good time. Then it was time for more food, little crunchy battered pieces of Cazon (the waiter told us it was tiburon, which is shark, but it is also known as dogfish and is a typical Andalusian dish), this was followed by Chopitos (also known as chiperones - baby squid deep fried in batter) one of my personal favourites in the world of tapas, and these were great. Our final tapa was Riñones a la plancha ( griddled kidneys served on a bed of grilled peppers) really nice and a great final dish to a very satisfying meal. El Olivo has been a really popular tapas bar for over five years, it’s a great place to sit and eat well while you enjoy the

winter sun and in the summer it’s great to sit under parasols. You can just stop by for a drink or eat great tapas all day and into the night - the kitchen stays open throughout their opening hours. There’s always a lively atmosphere and it’s popular not just with tourists but locals too. Carlos is Andalusian, hence the kidneys and dogfish and chiperones being called chopitos. Eva and I chatted after we had finished eating about opening hours and

about the bar in general. Both she and Carlos went to great pains to emphasise that everything at El Olivo was cooked from fresh basic ingredients - no frozen pre-cooked dishes of foods. She asked me what I thought of the Valencian tomato they serve - we didn’t have any, I replied. Oh no, you were supposed to have them! They’re among the top three tomatoes in Valencia! BUÑUELOS

The streets are alive but as much as the mascletás, the fallas, the bands and the verbenas; the traditional Fallas food is equally important and colourful. Feeding the throngs of the sleepless, partying Fallas crowds requires some pure energy food. Now with UNESCO World Heritage status for the festival, we look at the history of one of those energy boosters, ‘buñuelos’ (doughnut fritters), those heavenly fried golden treats with a delicate crunch, sweetly dusted in sugar. The story goes that originally when the carpenters chucked out their wood, the wives of the carpenters, considered the first buñoleras, “refined, very neat and with immaculate white aprons,” placed iron drums as a stove and made use of the wood fires to cook up rich doughnuts (very probably from a recipe handed down from the Moors). Often the buñuelos would be accompanied by a glass of anise for the ladies and brandy for the men. Experts say that the secret of the taste is to use a quality wheat flour, to control the rest time of the dough and to work it by hand. But in spite of all this, there are factors difficult to control, like the atmospheric conditions since the high humidity is beneficial for the mass whereas the cold harms it. A curious anecdote, one which is used by the most superstitious bakers, is to always have a sprig of laurel near the fire with which to attract good luck and make a cross over the dough to make it good. The original ‘buñuelos de viento’ gave way over the years to other varieties such as pumpkin, which started to be used by farmers in the orchard areas to take advantage of seasonal produce. The calabaza ones have certainly grown in popularity but you can also find boniato, vanilla, fig and even horchata and orange. Article © 2017 24/ 7 Valencia / Photo by: Nicola Bingham

BUÑUELOS They are still a keystone element of the festival and you will find large commercial doughnut stalls frying up in many streets. The old iron drums have been replaced by butane gas cookers and the liquors for a good glass of hot chocolate in which to dunk the buñuelos. However, for your gourmet buñuelo, I recommend you seek out the traditional buñoleras, more or less equivalent to an unofficial women’s institute, such as in the small street leading off the main square in Benimaclet. They are the best I’ve tasted. Certainly the consumption of buñuelos escalates during the days of Fallas, but you can also find buñolerías such as the ‘Buñolería El Contraste’ in Ruzafa where Mariano Catalán Blasco and his nephew José, with five generations behind them, continue the tradition of serving these rounded delights all year round. However, if you fancy a go at making your own, here is the recipe… PREPARATION

Mix the flour and baking powder in a bowl. Leave to one side. In a big, heavy saucepan, put the water, milk and butter with a drop of anise liqueur and pinch of salt to heat. Watch carefully and when it starts to boil, add the flour quickly, moving the mixture rapidly with a wooden spoon. Leave it to rest and cool. When it has cooled, start adding the beaten eggs slowly, making sure they are absorbed into the mixture as you go along. If it looks like the mixture won’t be able to absorb any more, stop. The mixture should be soft enough that you can scoop spoonful portions, or alternatively you can place the mixture into a piping bag. Grease your hands and make small balls, keeping in mind that they will double in size. Heat the oil to about 180C. Drop small quantities of the buñuelos into the hot oil. Fry them until they are golden. Remove from the pan with a slotted

• 200 ml mineral water • 100 ml full fat milk • 60 gm unsalted butter • 180 gm sifted plain flour (good quality) • 3-4 big eggs (beaten) • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder • 1 dessert spoon sugar • Dash of anise liqueur • Pinch of salt • Light olive oil or sunflower oil to fry • Sugar to dust when cooked spoon and drain. While they are still hot, dust with sugar. You could also fill them with cream or crème anglaise. March

A GLIMPSE OF WHAT COULD BE! After a disastrous 2016, Valencia fans got a glimpse of what could be the future with an impressive 2-1 home victory over arch-rivals and the thenleague leaders Real Madrid. From the word go, the home side were on the front foot and the shell- shocked visitors were two goals down inside the first 10 minutes. The first goal was one of the best to grace Mestalla in many a season. Diego Alves quickly threw the ball out to Cancelo who raced away and crossed the halfway line before feeding Munir on the right wing. The former Barcelona star checked back onto his left foot and crossed to Simone Zaza, who was in the penalty box with his back to goal and closely marked by Varane. The Italian striker took one touch to control the cross and then pivoted, turned and produced a ‘howitzer’ of a shot that Keylor Navas could only watch fly past him into the top corner of the net.

Mestalla erupted into raptures with complete strangers hugging each other and asking themselves, “Is this the same player who could not get into the West Ham side? Is this the same Zaza who missed a comical penalty for his country in the 2016 Euros against Germany when brought on just minutes before the end of the game for that specific task?” This wonderful stadium of Valencia, one of the oldest in Spain, was rocking even louder five minutes later when Fabián Orellana doubled his team’s lead. The Chilean international started the move after the breakdown of a Real Madrid attack. He fed Zaza, who quickly broke away and passed to Nani on the opposite side of the field. Nani responded by returning the ball back across the pitch into the path of Orellana, who had continued his run from Valencia’s own 30 yard line. The January signing then hit his shot from just inside the box and, to the delight of the majority of the crowd, it went under the legs of the Real Madrid keeper and into the back of the net.

The decibels in Mestalla were now akin to the daily mascletás at the Plaza del Ayuntamiento in March during Fallas. Another glory night was on the cards but had the hosts peaked too early? With very little time left in the first half, Cristiano Ronaldo halved the deficit with a wonderful header from a teasing Marcelo cross to slightly taint what had been a tremendous first half for Los Chés. SPRING IN VALENCIA…. THE NEW VINTAGE EMERGES! Introduction

Just like butterflies, the new wines are beginning to make an appearance and what a good vintage 2016 looks as though it is going to be. A long hot summer with no rain saw an early harvest, the grapes all being collected before that very wet autumn commenced. The grapes were uniformly healthy, with good maturity and concentration according to all the wine-makers we have spoken to. During winter, the wines have stabilized and been bottled and now they are ready for drinking. In this article we will look at some of the new releases from around Valencia, particularly the white wines. There are two reasons for this….firstly it is the whites which are generally being released, the reds are still in barricas undergoing a crianza and the red wines which will be released will be from the 2015 vintage.

Some Selected Wines

DO Valencia is split into four subzones and we will start in the Alto Turia. This is the part of the region which follows the CV35 towards Ademuz, up the Turia valley and starts beyond Casinos. The predominant white variety from here to Titaguas is called Merseguera. The vines grow from about 750m above sea level right up to 1200m. They grow well on the poor soil and stony ground characteristic of the Serranos mountains. They tend to be fresh, floral wines, quite expressive on the nose and with good acidity. In the village of Calles you will encounter Bodegas Vegamar, a large modern bodega with a growing reputation and awards from prestigious competitions. Here they produce both a Merseguera and a Sauvignon Blanc, both of which are highly recommended. The former is very expressive on the nose and balanced in the mouth, the latter is classic northern French in style, gooseberry on the nose with elderflower and hints of tropical fruit in the mouth and a very long finish. From the next village of Chelva, if you take the mountain road to the sanctuary and the village of Ahillas, you will find

an artisan bodega producing ‘Flor de Ahillas’, also from Merseguera. The winemaker allows the wine to remain in contact with the dead yeast for a couple of months after fermentation finishes. This adds depth to the wine. Further on, you come to Titaguas, where the Coop of Santa Bárbara makes ‘Llanos de Titaguas’ and ‘Mersé’. The difference between the two is that Llanos is produced in stainless steel and Mersé has a couple of months in oak. Both are worth trying as they are good examples of a fresh wine but one has the added elegance that barrels impart. Independently Bodegas Vinados, Cent Piques also produce a fresh young Merseguera here from ‘mosto flor’, the un-pressed juice which emerges after maceration in deposits. This is undoubtedly one of the most expressive whites of the year. Bodegas Murviedro also have the variety and they, too, have just released a new wine, ‘Cepas Viejas’, which is, as the name suggests, from old vines and also has had a couple of months in oak. It is an excellent dry white wine perfect for the summer and to be drunk with seafood.

Moving south to the Marina Alta of DO Alicante province the predominant variety is Moscatel. Bocopa produce ‘Marina Alta’, an award-winning (13 gold medals) white wine from vineyards overlooking the sea. A pale white with a very aromatic and floral nose, sweet apricot and elderflower. It is a rich ripe wine in the mouth, and a perfect accompaniment for fideuá and other seafood dishes. A million bottles are produced annually so there is plenty to go around! Coming back into Valencia, they produce Moscatel-based wines in Turís at the La Baronía de Turís winery. Also a dry white wine from the variety, ‘Son 2 Días’ is a pale yellow wine. Moscatel is difficult to get the right acidity in and so the grapes for this are picked in two stages, early and under-ripe and then when fully ripe. This ensures the finished wine is well balanced and the orange blossom, apricot fruit and acidity are perfect in this wine. Turning north to Castellón province, we next recommend the new vintage of Gewurztraminer from Barón d’Alba, ‘Clos d’Esgarracordes’, in the village of Les Useres. This is a variety which has translated well from Alsace in France and which makes spicy, rich wines. The

2016 has turned out to be a very special wine and is well worth looking out for. Rosado wines are also just beginning to come onto the market and the Vegamar Merlot Rosado is the best of the new wines we have tasted so far. A very pale rose pink, as is the fashion, this has a fragrant nose and just enough fruit and body. It is a well-integrated wine with a long mineral finish. One red which cannot be missed out is the new 2014 ‘Pago Vera de Estenas’ Bobal. This wine is made in UtielRequena from the Bobal variety and only made in very good vintages. It always shows the characteristics of the old vines from this variety, good ripe fruit, concentrated flavours and, with 16 months in oak, it also has the structure such a wine needs. Very forward (it can be drunk now), it is really a wine for keeping. Where to buy them?

Most of the wines are available now from the online shops on the Internet. Vegamar have an outlet, ‘Vegamar Selección’, on C/Colón right by the metro station. Marina Alta is available in most branches of Consum and Flor de Ahillas from Beals. Vera de Estenas is to be found in El Corte Inglés.

Where to taste them?

Proava will be holding their Mostra de Vins in the dry riverbed between the Alameda and Flores bridges over the weekend of 21 – 24 April. Most, if not all, of these bodegas will be showing their wines, along with many others. This is the most comprehensive wine and food fair held in Valencia each year. By then, the Concurso de Vinos de la Comunidad Valencia will have taken place and we will know the best wines in the whole of Valencia for 2017.
