LA RIADA

“LA RIADA” THE FLOOD OF VALENCIA For most of the year the Turia was a dormant little stream which trickled along the sticky mudflats, which Valencia liked to call a river. Writing at the beginning of the nineteenth century, British writer Richard Ford mocked the Valencians for the false grandeur of their magnificent bridges and high river walls… all for a piffling little brook. What he didn’t know was that twice a year the river swelled with the autumn and spring rain or that every ten years or so it flooded the city. It was a supposedly normal Monday in 1957 in Valencia. On October 14th a flood came, which caused such devastation it was to be an historic turning point in the way the city developed. It helped shape what we know as Valencia today. Valencians knew that you tended to get a bit of rain in these parts around October time but no one could have imagined the scale of the tragedy which was about to befall them. On the Saturday, two days before the flood, was the festival of Pilar. There had been heavy rain and the scheduled

bullfight had been cancelled. Sunday morning, however, had seen only a few showers catching people on their way to Mass. The afternoon had been dry, Levante’s match against Tetuán had gone ahead and people crowded into the city’s numerous cinemas. In a curious twist of fate, one of the most popular films that weekend was the disaster movie ‘Typhoon over Nagasaki’ at the ‘Olimpia’. They needn’t have bothered going to the pictures, it was all about to happen right in front of their eyes. While people were turning in for the night, some of the heaviest rains ever seen had been falling further inland and some night owls marvelled at how the river had swollen. Not long after midnight, the first wave struck. At a rate of two thousand seven hundred cubic metres per second, water poured into the city. Within minutes, houses around Calle Alboraya and Calle Sagunto were letting in up to a metre of water. People scrabbled their way to upper floors, climbed trees and statues, the lights went out and the

violent rush of water could be heard all over the city. This first wave only affected people who lived in the vicinity of the river, especially along its North bank and nearer the sea at Malvarrosa and Nazaret. The ancient doors of the Monasterio de la Trinidad were wrenched off by the force of the water. Things calmed down at around 4 a.m. During that morning, people from the centre (as yet unaffected) ventured out to see the fast-flowing water and the eerie sight of drowned cows, floating down to the sea from a cattle farm further upstream. The Pont de Fusta (or wooden bridge) in front of the Estación del Puente de Madera had been completely washed away. Little did they know the worst was yet to come. At around two in the afternoon, a second wave crashed in. It was bigger than the first, at nearly fourthousand cubic metres per second. The river recovered its ancient course through the city centre, which had

9

been dry since the eleventh century. Vast waves of water flowed furiously into the Barrio Carmen down Calle Baja, through to Bolseria, past the Central market, across the Plaza del Ayuntamiento and out again down Calle Barcas, a street which had originally taken its name from an ancient landing stage when the river had previously flown through the city. Most of the centre was under three metres of water, the worst hit areas were again on the North bank, Calle Doctor Oloriz was under more than five metres. Despite being close to the river, the Cathedral and the whole of the old Roman city was left completely untouched becoming once again the ancient island on which the city was founded. The true death toll is unknown but official figures state that more than a hundred people lost their lives. Many more lost their homes, belongings and livelihoods in the case of some shopkeepers and traders. One body, found on the wall of the Viveros gardens after the waters had subsided, was that of Micaela Chulvi Benaches who hadn’t been killed by the flood at all. She had died of old age at 84 and was lying in state in the family living room when the waters washed her away. One man who had been trapped on the Puente de la Trinidad had climbed onto the head of the Statue of Santo Tomás de Villanueva to escape drowning. After holding on for more than two hours, he was finally thrown a rope and rescued to great cheers from

the watching crowds. Many people had saved themselves by holding onto the railings and climbing up to first floor balconies along the Calle Barcas but the city itself would never be quite the same again. The clear up began almost immediately and help came from all over Spain. The first to arrive was the Cartagena fire brigade from Murcia. Those doing military service in 1957 & 1958 were brought in to clean the city, spending most of their time up to their knees in the vast amounts of mud and sludge that the floods had left behind; they were known as the Quinta del fango “the mud generation”. New housing was built in the middle of the fields, which are now Avenida Blasco Ibáñez for those who had been made homeless. The development was named after l’Alguer in Sardinia. Rising up as it did in the middle of the Huerta it quickly became known as “La Isla perdida” (the lost island). The river was diverted and a new river bed with a capacity to handle water flowing at up to 5,000 cubic metres per second was built to the south of the city. Just in case, the south wall of the new river is slightly lower so any future flood would flow south, away from the city. What the residents of Sedaví, Benituser and Torrente thought of this at the time is not known. After twenty years of bickering about what to do with the old river bed some bright sparks wanted to build

a huge motorway right down the middle. Thankfully, the plan did not come to fruition. Work finally started on the Turia park as a public green space, running right through the city, still known universally as “the river.” Subsequently, most significant public works have been centred on this previously neglected area, including the park itself, the Ciudad de las Ciencias, the Palau de la Musica, the Parque de Cabecera, the Bioparc. As a direct legacy of the flood, the seeds of modern Valencia were sown. With many of its shops and houses devastated and destroyed, the Barrio Carmen was never again to recover its role as the business and commercial centre of the city. The shops and businesses moved out first to La Avenida del Oeste and later to Calle Colón. The last remaining aristocrats abandoned their crumbling Carmen palaces and joined the upper middle classes around the Gran Via and the barrio was left to rot. This may not have been such a bad thing. While the Calle Colón has lost all but a few of its original buildings to huge department stores & chains & franchises…the Carmen has been preserved in all its intricate, dusty, dilapidated splendour. Had it not been for the flood we might have had a huge concrete ‘El Corte Inglés’ built right in the middle of the Plaza de la Virgen or over what, thankfully, is still old Calle Caballeros.

VALENCIA WINES

EIGHT NEW VALENCIAN

WINES WE ARE

RECOMMENDING

widely available throughout the region. Murviedro is a very large bodega with access to vineyards in all parts of the Valencian community. In the last three or four years the bodega has concentrated on local varieties of vines and introduced new ranges of wines, which emphasises the quality which can be achieved with them. Four of the wines are from the Audentia range, which also highlights wines from DO Valencia.

This month we are looking at eight new wines on the market from the bodegas of Toni Arrรกez in La Font de la Figuera and Murviedro. Nearly all the wines are DO Valencia label. The odd one out being from Jumilla, a wine from Murcia which is just across the border from DO Alicante.

1. Mala Vida Blanco 2017

Toni Arrรกez is a young winemaker who took over from his grandfather and father. The bodega originally sold wine in bulk and exported. At the beginning of the 20th century, it was the fourth largest exporter in the region. His strength is his marketing ability and he works with local artists on the design of his labels, which are mostly aimed at the younger market. However, his wines are also very drinkable and

This is a modern style Valencian wine made with three varieties typical of each of the 3 Valencian zones, which are Alto Turia (Merseguera) Clariano (Verdil) and Turis (Moscatel). It has the apricot aromas of the Moscatel, acidity from the Merseguera and the elegance of the Verdil. Pale yellow with green flashes, it has an intense

The White Wines Bodegas Arrรกez, DO Valencia (Clariano) 12.5%ABV.

aroma of jasmine, citrus notes of orange peel with tropical hints. There is a light base of herbs, which gives the wine its elegant fresh style. In the mouth unctuous, balanced, remaining fresh with a long, fresh, persistent finish.

2. Audentia Blanco 2017

Bodegas Murviedro, DO Valencia 11.5%ABV. Another Mediterranean wine typical of the modern style from Sauvignon Blanc (60%) and Moscatel. Pale yellow with green hints, the nose is again intensely tropical, with pineapple, guava, and mango. In the mouth delicate, fruity and very refreshing.

The Rosados Both wines are made from the freerun juice, i.e. the juice which emerges naturally in deposit before pressing as the grapes are macerated to obtain colour and flavour from the skins.

11

RIKI WIGLEY & MARIAN DARÁS OF VÍ VID 1. Audentia Rosado 2017, Cabernet Sauvignon

Bodegas Murviedro, DO Valencia 12.5%ABV. Only the free-run juice from the best Cabernet Sauvignon grapes are used in this wine. Cabernet Sauvignon is unusual in Valencia and we believe this is just one of three rosado wines made from the variety. Very pale cherry colour, high intensity nose with aromas of red fruit and pepper. Intense, elegant in the mouth with good fruit and a lively acidity.

2. Vivir sin Dormir 2016 Rosado Monastrell

Bodegas Arráez, DO Valencia (Clariano) 13%ABV Also made from the free-run juice, this is a pale rose colour with ample legs. On the nose fresh red fruits, tone fruit (peach, apricot and paraguayo) with citrus and cherry hints. In the mouth you notice the alcohol on entry; it has volume, unctuous, well- integrated fruit with citrus and a fresh acidity.

The Red Wines

1. Mala Vida 2017

Bodegas Arráez, DO Valencia (Clariano) 13.5% ABV A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Monastrell, Syrah and Tempranillo with 8 months in French and American oak. Medium-bodied, black cherry mature fruit in compote, married to notes from the barrel, vanilla, coco, coffee cream. In the mouth good body, well balanced, round and well-integrated. This was Toni’s first excursion with his new strategy and was an immediate success.

fermentation with malolactic fermentation in steel tanks. Intense red with garnet hues, red fruits with balsamic notes, hints of menthol. Silky smooth in the mouth, well-structured with fresh acidity. Petit Verdot is also unusual in Valencia. The variety is more common in Bordeaux where it is a small element of several top Chateau wines and which adds a little “salt and pepper” to the blend. It has adapted well to conditions here.

3. Vivir Sin Dormir Monastrell Barrica

2016, DO Jumilla 14.5%ABV. DO Jumilla is South of DO Valencia in Murcia. It has around a dozen bodegas and Toni has selected his own grapes to make this wine, which is much more in Jumilla’s style. Long maceration then four months in oak. Intense cherry red colour with long slow legs. Explosion of red and black fruits, spice, both exotic and sweet with smooth notes of the barrels. Seductive and full of flavour, juicy and meaty fruit, with the oak, tannins and acidity well-integrated. Very long, flavourful finish.

2. Audentia Petit Verdot 2017 Murviedro, DO Valencia (Clariano) 13%ABV

Cold maceration for 10 days, short

4. Audentia Reserva 2014

Murviedro DO Valencia (Clariano) 13.5%ABV

A blend of Tempranillo 40%, Monastrell 40% and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon. Ruby red with earthy tones. Mature smooth nose, elegant aromas of fruit in compote, vanilla, chocolate and tobacco leaf. Smooth and long tasting in the mouth, well-structured with ageing potential. This is a very good wine and very popular with our regular tasting groups. All of these wines and others from the bodegas are widely available throughout the Valencian Community or from the bodegas distributors. We hope you enjoy trying them, all are in the 5-7€ range.

Riki Wigley & Marian Darás of VÍ Vid VÍ Vid is a project supporting the development of wine knowledge and gastronomy in the Valencian Community. We run wine clubs, give tastings of Valencian wines in English and support wine-maker and bodega directly. We can be found in Instagram (Vivid8402), and through our blog VÍ Vid at vvidblog.wordpress. com, in Facebook, (www.facebook. comVivideventos) and in Twitter @ vividvinos. Our Valencia Wine Nights tastings in Valencia will start again at the end of October after a hectic summer. Article © 2018 24/ 7 Valencia

RESTAURANT OF THE MONTH RESTAURANT EL ARENAL OF THE MONTH

JUAN DE JUANES

2. Explain the relevance of the usually a choice of meat or baked or grilled fish and a dessert. On Sundays oven

1. Tell us something about the The oven is the heart of ‘Juan de Juahistory of the restaurant and nes.’It is what gives meaning to our something about the life of cuisine and where all the dishes of the menu acquire their personality. Juan de Juanes

at noon, instead of a menu, what we do is a traditional baked roast as a special dish. This gives the restaurant a very festive and family atmosphere.

The restaurant was formed with the idea of recovering and exploring cuisine at its most essential and ancestral, namely the union of product cooked with fire.

6. What are the products of the carta?

The name of the restaurant and the street where it is located pays tribute to the Valencian Renaissance painter, who lived here in El Carmen. We want to reflect his relevance to the area and also the historical richness of the neighbourhood. Surely, Juan de Juanes bought the bread locally that was made in an oven like ours. He would have passed daily in front of the building where the restaurant is located, which already existed in his day.

3. What are your specialties?

The most representative could be the ‘bone marrow’ or the ‘grilled steak’ because they are dishes where perhaps you can appreciate more the use of fire and smoke, as one more essential ingredient for each dish.

4. Do you have a good selection of wines?

We have a winery that is always evolving with our menu. We look for wines that fit with our dishes and that truly complement them. Being advised by our sommelier is something that our customers always appreciate.

5. What is a typical menu?

We offer a menu at noon that includes three appetizers, made with fresh and seasonal products, a main dish that is

We always work with fresh products and the best quality. The best suppliers for us are those who take maximum care of the details in the production. As another requirement, we ask them to choose the best of what they have and to bring it to ‘Juan de Juanes’. The best meats, the best fish and the best products of la huerta (the market garden) come to the kitchen of the restaurant, which is in view of our customers. They can see how the fire enhances and transforms their choice of food, so that they can truly enjoy their dish cooked in a way that is increasingly rare to find these days…

FOOD BY HELEN WESTWATER OF LA OLA FRESCA SCONES

SCONES On the weekend of 20th and 21st October, Benimaclet is celebrating the 5th ‘ConFusion Festival’ with over 300 activities in two days. On the Sunday 21st, as part of the festival at La Ola Fresca, we are planning a day of swing music and dance workshops. This will be in collaboration with Satchmo Dance and artist Tina McCallan, who will be recreating with the public the iconic painting from the 1920s… the girl in green by Tamara de Lempicka. This will all be rounded off with a performance of jazz manouche band ‘The Smilen Trio’ and a 1920s tea party. With that in mind, for this month’s recipe I have chosen that tea party favourite the ‘scone’, which in itself causes much confusion. Firstly, there is the question of pronunciation whether it is scone as in bone or gone. Secondly there is almost the tribal warring of whether jam or cream should go on the scone first. Since I arrived here from Cornwall, my loyalties should go to the jam first. Actually, if I wasn’t being watched, I would do it the other way. However, let’s face it, both taste just as good. You can import clotted cream to Spain but it will cost you a pretty penny so for this recipe we will use normal whipped cream. Funnily enough, I think I am asked for the recipe for scones more than any other. So here it is; the confusing scone. Said to be the “Fastest Cake in the West! It’s....Gone!” boom, boom :D

For the full Benimaclet ConFusion Festival programme please check their website beniconfusionfest.es/en/home and come along and see us. It will also be our 8th year anniversary.

Method Heat the oven to 220C/425F/Gas 7 Rub the fat (butter) into the flour. Mix in the sugar. With a knife or in a food processor, gently add the milk. It is actually better if you use slightly gone off milk but, if you don’t like the idea of that, you can put in a scant spoonful of natural yoghurt. Be careful not to overmix. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured board and knead gently. Roll out and with a cookie cutter (5cm/2inches) cut rounds.

INGREDIENTS: 225g/8oz self-raising flour Pinch of salt 55g/2oz butter 27g/1oz caster sugar 150ml /5 fluid ounces milk Milk for glazing Whipped double cream Strawberry jam

Place on the greased baking tray and glaze with the milk or a beaten egg, using a brush. Bake in the oven for about 12 to 15 minutes. I tend to slightly undercook them because then you can heat them up better without drying them out. You can keep them in the freezer, ready to pop out at any moment you fancy one!

“I’ll sing you this October song Oh, there is no song before it The words and tune are none of my own For my joys and sorrows bore it Beside the sea The brambly briars in the still of evening Birds fly out behind the sun And with them I’ll be leaving The fallen leaves that jewel the ground They know the art of dying And leave with joy their glad gold hearts In the scarlet shadows lying When hunger calls my footsteps home The morning follows after I swim the seas within my mind And the pine-trees laugh green laughter I used to search for happiness And I used to follow pleasure But I found a door behind my mind And that’s the greatest treasure For rulers like to lay down laws And rebels like to break them And the poor priests like to walk in chains And God likes to forsake them I met a man whose name was Time And he said, “I must be goin’,” But just how long that was I have no way of knowing Sometimes I want to murder time Sometimes when my heart’s aching But mostly I just stroll along The path that he is taking” (‘October Song’ by The Incredible String Band ©)

VALENCIA EL ARENALFOOTBALL

JURY STILL OUT ON THE ROTATION SYSTEM Valencia CF continue to slowly claw themselves up the league ladder with improved performances but concern continues to grow over the rotation system policy that Marcelino has adopted. Last season, there was the occasional tinkering of the squad but at times this campaign there has been a complete hatchet job. The defence is finally beginning to get a settled look to it but the forward line continues to be swapped around more regularly than Panini stickers in the school playground.

accruing injuries. After the pulsating derby with Levante UD in early September, Valencia returned back to the Mestalla to play hosts to Real Betis. With this game, Juventus in the Champions League and Villarreal at the Estadio de la Cerámica within a week of each other… it seemed the ideal time to exploit the depth of the squad and use the bench to good effect.

Santi Mina, Rodrigo, Gameiro, Guedes, Chéryshev, Ferran Torres and Batshuayi have all featured up front, which may explain why goals have been at a premium in the first eight league games and the two Champions League encounters.

Betis succeeded in their game plan to frustrate the hosts and go away from the Mestalla unbeaten. Valencia squandered a few chances but looked lacklustre up front despite some creative midfield play. Parejo came closest to scoring, hitting the crossbar. However, the biggest cheer from the fans that day was the sight of Joaquín entering the fray in the 62nd minute for the Andalusian visitors.

The pleasing thing is that Valencia are now starting to play exciting football again and the true benefits of any rotation system are likely to emerge further down the line when other squads with less depth start tiring and

With the Juventus game just a few days away, the worry of where the goals would come from against the stingiest of back fours was foremost on the minds of half the Valencia faithful. The other half were fretting on

how the players would stop Ronaldo causing havoc amongst Los Che’s defence. The latter was solved by the referee, who harshly sent off the petulant superstar in the 29th minute for an innocuous looking challenge on Murillo in the Valencia penalty area. Before that another former Real Madrid player, Sami Khedira, had been forced off with injury. So, if there was ever a good time to go for the jugular and send the ‘Old Lady’ off to bed early it was then. Unfortunately, it was Valencia who would have the nightmares, as their naivety at the very top level gave Juventus a “get out of jail card” that the Italian team gleefully accepted. Two very avoidable penalties gave the team from Turin the 3 points. First, Parejo put his foot in the face of his former team mate João Cancelo just inside the area, just when it seemed the danger had been averted! In the second half, Murillo laid hands on a Juve player from a corner that the German referee Felix Brych deemed was illegal.

35

It was evident a directive had gone out, from the governing bodies during the 2018 World Cup, that grappling from corners between opponents would no longer be tolerated and fouls would be given in either direction in future. This has not translated onto the La Liga stage as yet but the first games of this year’s Champions League proved it would be endorsed at this level and Valencia were one of several clubs to be taught this harsh lesson in the opening match of the group games. Pjanic dutifully converted the two gifts Valencia gave the Italians and the opportunity to give the fans another magic night at the Mestalla was gone. Confidence seemed low, even when on level terms against ten men, and only Carlos Soler came out of the night with any real credit. To cap off an awful evening for the fans, Parejo saw his penalty saved by Wojciech Szczęsny with the final piece of action in the game. Valencia then had to pick themselves up and go to their local rivals Villarreal. The ‘Yellow Submarine’ had been in action themselves in Europe, drawing two a piece with Glasgow Rangers in Spain the night after Valencia’s defeat to Juventus. Before the game, the hosts placed 18,000 yellow plastic flags on the

seats of the Villarreal supporters. Unsurprisingly, the stadium was a sea of yellow as the teams emerged. With Javi Fuego injured, Villarreal had only Victor Ruiz playing against his former club. In contrast, Valencia had Gabriel Paulista, Denis Chéryshev and manager Marcelino back at their old stomping ground. The match itself failed to live up to expectations and both sides ended the game without bulging the back of the net. The major talking point came in the 58th minute when Dani Parejo was given a straight red card for what looked like a clumsy tackle on the former Everton favourite Ramiro Funes Mori. Marcelino soon followed for remonstrating the decision far too vociferously with the fourth official. Shortly afterwards, he was caught by the TV cameras on the phone talking to one of the Valencia supporting staff in the dug-out. This is an action that could land him in even further trouble with the Spanish Football Federation. With the Valencia coach restricted to the stands after receiving a two match ban for his antics during the Villarreal game, assistant coach Juan Rubén Uría Corral was in charge for the home match against Celta. The hosts started well when Batshuayi scored

his first goal for the club, just shy of the half hour mark. Valencia looked in control and seemed to be cruising for three points. The one thing they had to do more than anything was to deny Iago Aspas an opportunity. The Spanish striker is in many ways the forward version of Sergio Ramos, on and off the field. He is always likely to get you some sort of reward late in a game on the field. Away from play, it has been said that he is universally disliked by fans around the country… although almost all would love him in their side! With a petulance akin to Ronaldo, his bookings like his goal ratio is very high. He got both in the Valencia game, a yellow card in the first half for arguing with the referee and a poacher’s goal nine minutes from time when his run between two defenders gave him the space and time to glance a finely judged header, just wide of Neto. The disappointment of not gaining the first league win for Valencia fans was apparent in the street conversations after the game, as supporters ferried out of the stadium back to the various barrios in the city. However, the fans did not have to wait too long as the next game gave Valencia their first victory when the team came back from the Basque region with a 1-0 win Article © 2018 24/7 Valencia

over Real Sociedad. Even that required a penalty save from Neto, after Gameiro had opened his league account for Valencia in the 36th minute. Two huge games followed for Valencia. First, a trip to Old Trafford for game two of the Champions league and then Barcelona at home. The Manchester United contest ended in a goalless draw but the Red Devils were there for the taking and a more positive approach could have given the visitors three points instead of one. When Barcelona are in town the atmosphere at the Mestalla is always electric. When Valencia go one goal up inside the first minute then the place is rocking. Then, for the next fifteen minutes, Guedes and Gaya ruled the right hand side of the Barcelona defence and were a constant threat on Ter Stegen’s goal. That was until the Portuguese star went off injured. Chéryshev came on as a replacement but the chemistry between the Russian and Spanish international is a work in progress and not the finished article. Consequently, Barcelona came more and more and more into the game and it was no surprise when Messi equalised with a crisp shot after a typically fluid move from the Catalans. The second half was equally absorbing with possession belonging almost exclusively to the Catalans at times. Paulista and Garay were immense at the back for Los Che and they are starting to gel in the same way that Otamendi and Mustafi did. The last fifteen minutes saw the visitors camped in Valencia’s half. However, buoyed on by the fans, the hosts were in no mood to give a goal away. They held out for their sixth draw in eight games to give their supporters renewed hope that it will be only a matter of time before Valencia are vying for the European spots in La Liga again. Meanwhile, Levante UD are going quietly about their business and looking a match for anyone. No team has not lost or not won at least one game in the league after just eight games and the relative parity between the majority of clubs is something ‘Los Granotas’ have taken advantage of. Recent wins over Alavés at home and Getafe away have left them sitting in a comfortable mid-table position.

MOSAIC ART

EMILIO VERDEJO MOSAIC ART The handmade production of Emilio’s mosaics began in 2008, inspired by his interest in the beautiful work done with this same technique at the main train station of Valencia (‘La Estación del Norte de Valencia’) and also by the work of Gaudí. However, his need for working with his hands and exploring various techniques as a means of expression has been a constant in his life.

With respect to his work with mosaics, which to begin with had been an occasional pastime…this soon became an enjoyable habit and a daily practice. In each new project the degree of difficulty in the elaboration of his compositions increases, as well as trying new forms. Sometimes they are reproductions and sometimes they are the product of his imagination, a vision that is personal, particular, original and distinctive.

The result of his constant practice with his tiles is a clear and clean image, even though it consists of a thousand pieces of irregular sizes. These impressive works are the fruits of dedication to his art and above all of the need of wanting to do things well, with precision and meticulousness. Website: www.verdejo-mosaic.com

Emilio Verdejo is also a popular unisex hairdresser and you will find him just a stone’s throw from Mercado Central at his salon, which he has been running successfully for 20 years. Some of his mosaics are on display and for sale at the salon. PELUQUERÍA EMILIO Zona Carmen Plaça del Mercat, 12, 46016 València Tel: 963 92 45 67 Article © 2018 24/7 Valencia

LA LONJA

The United Nations agency UNESCO has designated 851 sites around the world as World Heritage sites, which form part of the “cultural and natural heritage of the world” and are considered as having unique and universal value to the history of humanity. One of those sites is in Valencia. You may be surprised to learn it’s not Levante’s Ciudad de Valencia Stadium. While the Miguelete is a century older and the Albufera is more naturally beautiful, La Lonja in Plaza Mercado outshines them all. Unlike any other city in the world, the outstanding Gothic building in Valencia is not its cathedral but a non-religious civic monument to commerce. Before it was built in the late fifteenth century, all major buildings and institutions in the city were owned and run by the church. Breaking with this tradition, La Lonja was a physical representation of a shift in power during Valencia’s Golden Age from the cardinals to the carpet traders, the bishops to the bankers. Here was a monumental building not built to the glory of God, but to the power of the Valencian economy as a trader in the Mediterranean market. Anyone who’s had their bathroom refitted in Valencia will know how things work round here. After endless

negotiations the builders finally arrive, they make a superficial start to proceedings and destroy your old bathroom and then you don’t see them again for weeks. They then come and do most of the work but never quite finish. There’s always a tap or a tile missing or the door doesn’t quite fit. This is a long held and respected Valencian tradition (see what happened with the Grand Prix Formula 1 here) and the building of La Lonja was no different. The first stone was laid in November 1482 but work didn’t really start until a year later. Once they got going it was more or less built in 15 years (pretty good going for the fifteenth century) although it took another fifty years before it was completely finished. You can read all this on an inscription above the back doorway in Plaza Doctor Collado, giving exact details about the different stages of the building’s construction. Although not a religious building, La Lonja certainly has sacred pretensions as a “temple” of commerce with many spiritual and biblical symbols on show. There are religious icons and gargoyles all around its façade. If you’re into this sort of thing, look out for the little man having a dump above one of the basement floor windows. The design of the building

followed an initiatic code, a sort of medieval Feng Shui, where everything down to the exact number of columns and the distance between them was all calculated to give the maximum spiritual harmony to the merchants working there. There are three parts to the building. The largest part is the Sala de Contratación or the trading floor with its 24 columns twisting up 17 metres until they open up like palm trees on the ceiling, which was painted blue and decorated with stars to imitate the Valencian night sky. Back in Valencia’s golden age this was a bustling hive of activity, its modern equivalent would be the great stock markets of today. When the City granted merchants official status as “Mercaders de La Lonja”, they were given a table to deal from and a red velvet cloth with which to cover it. Along with the buying and selling of exotic products from all over the known world, mortgages and loans were also arranged here. Officially, Christians were not allowed to charge interest, hence the importance of Jews as money lenders, but the merchants of the time soon found ways around this. Running along the walls of the room is an inscription reminding the merchants

where they were and calling them to honour their surroundings and to trade honestly and fairly. Those failing to do this (well, those who fell foul of the city leaders anyway) were sent to the dark cellars of the Tower, which rises up through the roof of the building. The merchants were given six months to settle their debts or pay back what they had been judged to have cheated (not that easy when you’re trapped in a rat-infested dungeon). If they did not comply, they were taken to the chapel at the top of the Tower. On their way up they probably, given the circumstances, neglected to admire the unique stone staircase ingeniously built without a central column. After making their peace with their maker, they were taken to their own table on the trading floor and beheaded in front of their fellow merchants. The city then took back its cloth and gave the table to someone else. Now that’s what I’d call zero tolerance to white collar crime. The Consulat del Mar or maritime consulate is accessed through the garden at the back of the building. This was luxury office space (the ceilings are decorated with gold leaf and fine wood carvings) for the trade delegations which were maintained

by all the major trading cities of the Mediterranean in the fifteenth century, with representatives from as far afield as Damascus, Rome, Venice, Egypt, Beirut and many others. On the exterior wall is one of the mysteries of La Lonja. The wall is decorated with a series of forty medals bearing men’s faces but historians can’t make up their minds who they are supposed to be. Are they Roman Emperors? Aragon kings? Leading merchants? Famous paella chefs? Ali Baba’s forty thieves? We’ll probably never know. After the discovery of America, Spain’s Mediterranean ports started gradually to decline as importance shifted to the Atlantic coast. Valencia’s Golden Age was coming to an end, as was the heyday of La Lonja. It remained an important part of the Valencian economy as the city’s silk exchange until the nineteenth century, when oranges and rice replaced silk as the region’s principal export. During the civil war, La Lonja was briefly to recapture its former glories when it was used to house the Spanish parliament while Valencia was capital of the Republic. So, in the twenty-first century, what do you do with a wholly exceptional

example of a secular building in late Gothic style, which dramatically illustrates the power and wealth of one of the great Mediterranean mercantile cities? Well, that’s a problem that successive Valencian governments have consistently failed to find a solution to. It has been used for parties, royal weddings, as an exhibition centre and a museum. Since its designation as a World Heritage site, La Lonja has become a bit of a museum piece in itself and is considered to be too precious for such trivial uses. Even the annual exhibition of Fallas figures has been moved to a local shopping centre. While the Cathedral still serves the purpose for which it was built and the Mercado Central across the road bristles with the very lifeblood of the city, La Lonja can often be experienced as a fascinating respite from all the crowds…

CITY OF ARTS AND SCIENCES

THE CITY OF ARTS AND SCIENCIES IN 2018 So you think you know Valencia? Paella, Fallas, Sun, Sand, Football, Passion, Light and Love! All of these fiery elements make up a place that has become known as the Mediterranean city par excellence. Part of the charm lies in the contrast between the old centro histórico and the modern City of Art and Sciences… Bringing together internationally renowned architects, research scientists and pioneers of the arts world, the ‘Ciudad de las Artes y las Ciencias’ has put Valencia on the international map. It has brought praise from ‘The Times’ in London and acclaim in Milan, Paris and New York. It is based on the Rio Túria Gardens and covers an area of 350.000 m 2. It has an estimated four million visitors each year. Broken up into five parts, each building has a distinctive identity and design:

L'HEMISFERIC

This includes a Planetarium, IMAX cinema and Omniscan Laser. Designed by Santiago Calatrava (Valencia’s most famous architect) it evokes the image of a gigantic human eye. In stereophonic sound, on a huge screen of 900m2, there are continual audiovisual displays with stunning sound and images. Simultaneously presented in four languages, you just sit back and take it all in. With the latest astronomy and laser technology, it is great fun for younger enthusiasts as well the older visitor. It is also an educative centre for teachers and students with an interest in astronomy.

L'OCEANOGRÀFIC

This oceanographic centre is the largest of its kind on the continent. Covering an area of 80.000 m2, it combines the biggest aquarium in Europe, an underwater restaurant (eat fish while larger ones swim past you), sea displays that range from the Arctic to the Tropical. It is home to 45, 000 animals of 500 different species. There is a 70m underwater glass tunnel that is available for visitors to be in close contact with sea creatures from all over the world. The educative and entertaining aspects of such a project enable the public and experts to take it all in a city that has always combined fire with water.

MUSEU DE LES CIÈNCIES "PRINCIPE FELIPE"

The cinema dome has the shape, sound and images to give the impression that you are in the films being shown. It is quite an experience for the uninitiated. The aim is to entertain and display images that are not just the preserve of experts. This museum is a clear symbol of twenty first century values. It is open-minded to the latest technological advances, without forgetting the traditional aim of informing and bringing together the public from all walks of life. Biology, physics, sport are all looked at in an original and entertaining way. There are three levels and a continual run of expositions, workshops and demonstrations. It invites the public to take part in the museum’s aims and therefore not just be bystanders. With internet facilities and scientific supervisors on hand, everyone can have a hand in a place that makes science fun as well as fascinating.

PALAU DE LES ARTS

It has often been said that port cities have a special relationship with music. Sydney and Liverpool are two famous examples. Valencia has become another. Covering an area of 40.000 m2, it is has become an international centre for classical music and opera in the twenty first century. Indeed, Placido Domingo is a key part of the team. With the latest acoustic technology, a huge auditorium and flexible stage facilities, it is attracting established names from the dance, theatre, opera and wider music world. Indeed, it also hosts popular music concerts with Lisa Stansfield, Level 42, Spandau Ballet, Serrat and flamenco singer Diego el Cigala being famous examples…

L'UMBRACLE

This is an avant-garde contribution to Valencia. With a panoramic view of the city, it has a promenade and garden. Valencia’s very own Xanadu! It is a popular Disco and Chill Out zone at weekends and hosts all sorts of private events throughout the year.

These are exciting times for the community. The City of Art and Sciences represents a place that is becoming a symbol of 21st century Europe. Whether you are spending a weekend or a year in the area, it has become as much a part of the city as the traditional plate of paella and colour of Fallas. To quote Charlton Heston in his film role of ‘El Cid’ as he reached the gates of the city: “THIS IS VALENCIA!”

VALENCIA MUSIC

MATISSE CLUB

1. What is the philosophy of Matisse Club and what sort of clientele do you have?

3. Could you describe some other activities you have in your programme?

The philosophy of Matisse Club is to offer a multi-disciplinary and quality programme, to enrich the listener, as well as to provide an experience where public and artist share an intimate moment live. We believe we have created a space where any person can feel attracted to our proposal, whatever their age or background.

Aside from our musical programme that covers concerts and jam sessions, we also have agreements for auditions with several music conservatories and music academies. We also host themed parties, multidisciplinary performances, exhibitions, paint-music, master classes, standup comedy, language exchanges, Schubertiadas, private events, projections, conferences or any kind of celebration. For that matter, the venue is extremely versatile and we believe we will be adding more activities in the near future.

2. Tell us about the styles of live music that you can experience… As we were saying, we offer all kinds of concerts for everyone. Our programme covers musical genres as far apart as classical music, blues, reggae, jazz, flamenco, swing, salsa, hip-hop, pop, rock, indie and more. We have scheduled ‘Tibetan music’ or ‘Early music’ with a harpsichord, viola de gamba and original instruments; with these two examples you can have an idea of the versatility of our programme.

4. Please recommend ‘24/7 Valencia’ readers some interesting acts that will be featuring at Matisse Club in the coming months… With such an eclectic programme it is difficult to compare or highlight any event. However, we would emphasize our Tuesday’s programme where we

host a triple jam session: the musical soirée or Schubertiada from 7pm to 9pm, a classical music open mic, ideal for students of music where they are in need of rehearsing their programmes for contests, tests, competitive examinations or concerts in a more relaxed environment and ideal to meet new people while creating music. Later, from 9.30pm until midnight, we have a freestyle jam session with Victor Jimenez surrounded by great musicians. At midnight, it’s time for some Afro-American music in its most carefree and spicy way. Funk, R&B, blues, soul or reggae music gain prominence with Leandro Yanguas and The Fonkee Felas Party. We could highlight many events but we can guarantee that Tuesday is our favourite day of the week where there is a great atmosphere. On the other side, we can say in advance we will be having a schedule for the youngest and their families from November, as well as an Opera cycle adapted to piano that will start with
