Why Live Even One More Day With Crippling Back Pain…When You Don’t Have To? Dear Friend: You’ve tried everything. You sleep with pillows under your legs…tried punishing therapy…you are half conscious from taking pain pills all day…you’ve even tried painful injections that gave you only temporary relief at best…and maybe your doctors are now even telling you that you may need surgery because nothing else has worked. Back pain can turn your life upside down…quickly. If you’re suffering with this miserable condition, you know exactly what I’m talking about. And, if you’re like most back pain sufferers, your worst fear is that the pain will continue to get worse, leaving you unable to work at your job during these difficult economic times…or, even just being able to get through the day taking care of your family… or simple things like being able to be selfsufficient and take care of your own needs. ASK YOURSELF THESE QUESTIONS Are you stiff as a board when you wake up in the morning? Is it a

challenge just to bend over and put your shoes on? Have you lost nights of sleep because of your pain? Has your back pain kept you from doing your normal everyday activities?

system… naturally… and, without having to rely on potentially dangerous treatment options.

If you answered yes to any of these questions, back pain has a grip on your life…and, is most likely stealing precious moments…moments you can never get back.

Chiropractic works fast…and it works for most cases of back pain. That means that in just a short period time (often in a few weeks) you could be back to doing the things that you enjoy most in life…pain free and feeling great again.

There’s Good News Though You DON’T have to live with back pain. You CAN be pain free. You CAN stop running from doctor to doctor…trying medication after medication…and, doing exercise after exercise without finding relief. You CAN finally feel “human” again and take control of your life back. Here’s how… Chiropractic actually works by releiving nervous system pressure and muscle tension through gentle adjustments to the spine…fixing structural and mechanical problems that are often causing your pain. As a result, Chiropractic actually “triggers” your body’s own miraculous healing

Here’s the best part…

And, if you’re wondering just who else relies on Chiropractic care, you’re in good company with people like olympic and professional athletes… famous movie stars…top political personalities…and, most likely, many of your neighbors, relatives and friends. Even The Government And Top Medical Researchers Support Chiropractic. Here’s What They Have To Say… °It works fast and is extremely effective. Often, more effective than tradition medical approaches. The prestigious MANGA Report (Ontario Ministry of Health) determined that... Map © 2019 24/ 7 Valencia

“Chiropractic care was the most cost effective and clinically effective care for painful conditions like low back pain.” °According to this top research journal...(J Manipulative Physiol Ther) 2000 Jun; 23(5): 307-11. “Patients who received treatment of mechanical neck pain or low back pain had statistically significant reductions in their pain-related disability after treatment”. And these are just two large studies. The list is exhaustive and hard to ignore if you have neck pain or back pain. Now, I want you to imagine for a minute riding your bike again…being able to exercise...enjoying long walks...spending quality time with your family on a weekend...being able to be productive again at work…simply being able to be self-sufficient again... feeling “human” again…and most important…enjoying your life again on your own terms, and without the back pain that was controlling your life. Most people who try Chiropractic are actually amazed to discover that correcting their problems and getting out of pain is often NOT so complex as they might think. In fact, they are astonished when they get results after only the first few treatments, even when they’ve tried every other medical option available without results. After only a few adjustments (sometimes after only one

I was about to get neck surgery because of a herniated disc, and now I don’t need to anymore!” -Antonio B.Moncada “My changes have been unbelievable. I was suffering atrocious migraine headaches and a lot of dizziness. After the first month of adjustments I have much more energy, I feel much happier and my pains have reduced drastically. It is a new hope for me because I thought I would need to spend my life with tablets, and now I am not using any. I AM SO HAPPY.” -Mari Carmen M. Betera “I have noted changes since the first day. I’m sleeping better. I wake up with

24/7 VALENCIA FALLAS GUIDE

FALLAS GUIDE Are you interested in folklore? Tradition? Big dresses? If you are, stick around. Valencia has all that and more, during the celebration known as Las Fallas. Read this and consider yourself armed for the festivities.

(La Despertá). You can avoid this by joining a casal yourself, allowing you yourself to be the object of your neighbour’s hatred.

LAS FALLAS

For hard-core Valencianos (nearly all of them). City Hall, not wanting to miss out on the fun, holds its own circus of noise every afternoon during Fallas at two o’clock. The Plaza del Ayuntamiento is stocked with enough firecrackers to blow up a small country, which are then all lit. Loud explosions leading up to a crescendo of painful sonic booms typify a good mascletà. Generally lasting five to ten minutes, the experience will leave you with gunpowder and sulphur in your lungs and bleeding ears, but hey, who cares? You’re only young once.

During the second week of March, you’ll see these large sculptures being set up at practically every street corner. Anything can be represented in a falla; the 10 Commandments, the plight of the crippled, world peace or belly-button lint. These are then ceremoniously burnt (in La Cremá) by proud firemen on the eve of March 19. EL CASAL Think of a friendly neighbourhood association (again, at every street corner) whose main mission, apart from setting up its falla, is to wake you and all your neighbours up at four o’clock every morning. You’ll finally get back to sleep only to be awakened again by its morning marching band

LA MASCLETÀ

LAS FALLERAS Watch out! You could be knocked over by one if you’re not paying attention. More than just a big dress, the fallera’s costume is the non plus

ultra of traditional fashion wear. Covered by enough lace, brocade and satin to bury a man (or fallera), these brave women take part in all the city’s festivities. You’ll see them representing their casals by marching in parades, posing for pictures, making paellas on the street and having nervous breakdowns, smiling all the while. Acute observers will make the comparison between the fallera’s hairstyle and a certain science-fiction film character, but the similarity ends there. These are Valencian Earth girls, born and bred. THE NIGHTLIFE A misnomer, actually. The nightlife lasts all day and night for the first three weeks of March. Valencia doesn’t sleep, and if you think you will, you are mistaken. My advice is to do what bar, pub and restaurant employees do; take copious amounts of stimulants and stay awake. There’s no point in sleeping. No point!

WHAT IS FALLAS ?

THIS IS WHAT THE CITY’S RESIDENTS SAY; CONDENSED FOR YOU BY DAVID RHEAD AND JOSÉ MARÍN The smell of cordite and the sizzle and crack of rockets. The smell of Buñuelos frying in the middle of the night. The smell of the Plaza de la Virgen carpeted with Spring flowers at four o’clock in the morning. The smell of ammonia in the morning when someone has used your doorstep as a bar toilet. Sunny mornings, windy afternoons and chilly nights. The mad rush to get to the Mascletá. The whole city still buzzing at three in the morning. The down time between five in the afternoon and nine in the evening. Burnt out bins and exploded milk cartons. The jumpy feeling of walking round and knowing that at any moment someone is going to throw a banger at you. Nervously jumping out the way of a banger only to find it was a pathetic little “popper” thrown by a four-yearold. Nervously jumping out the way of a banger only to find that it was a cigarette end someone had thrown away.

The constant Fallas soundtrack of Snap, crackle and pop and distant marching bands. The Fallera Mayor waving and weeping. The Mascletá. The overcrowded “VIP” balcony at the Ayuntamiento. The rhythm of the masclets filling the square. The rush and rumble that booms in through your toes and blasts out through your fingertips. Walking for an hour and then waiting forty-five minutes in a hot, crowded square for five minutes of loud bangs. Screaming rockets on sunny blue skies. The “knowledgeable” crowds and the roar of approval at the finale. The first few bars of “El Fallero”. Sunglasses, mopeds and Nobel cigarettes. Beers and Calamares amongst the bustle of a sunny post-mascletá. The bright colours, fun and weird bawdiness of the fallas. Angels and demons. Ducks coming out of teapots. Waiting with five hundred other people at the Torres de Serranos

for the one taxi on duty in the whole city. Long walks home through crowded streets. Moors and Christians in Calle Conde Altea. The lights in Ruzafa. Who pays the electricity bill for the lights in Ruzafa? Paellas in the street. The enthusiasm and rush of activity at the beginning of a midnight paella competition. The smell of burning firewood and melting asphalt. Being too drunk and hungry to care what the paella taste likes by the time it’s finished. Unexpected energetic guests. Street stalls, pony-tailed musicians from the Andes. Buñuelos, churros, porras, waffles and chocolate fried in three day old fat. Silly hats, glow in the dark bracelets and tweetie pie balloons. Human statues and jugglers in the narrowest of streets. The Fallera Mayor going up in a balloon. “Senyor pirotècnic, pot començar la mascletá”. Fourteen-year-old Valen-

cians’ first taste of nightlife. Verbenas everywhere. Tardis toilets in the river. Beer in a paper cup. Agua de Valencia in a plastic cup. Dodgy vodka in a plastic cup leaning over one of those yellow crash barriers around the Falla. Jerusalem, Merced, Mercat, Na Jordana, L’Antiga, Seneca, Calle Quart, Murillo. Porcelain pastels in Plaza Pilar. Arranging to meet five different people at the same time in different places and everyone arriving late, including you. Not meeting your friends but always bumping into your enemies. Traipsing back and forth across the river five times in one night...Falleros selling you flags, plants and oranges at the traffic lights. Falleros blocking off your street three weeks before Fallas has even started, keeping you awake all night and then knocking on your door asking for a contribution. Community spirit. Civic pride. Xocolatá and the Casal. Access only through a friend of a friend. Flags on the balconies. Controlled chaos. German Schalke 04 football fans back again. The way the city magically evolves

into something completely different for five days and then the day after it’s miraculously back to normal, like it never happened. The noon time rush for a pint of Guinness on St Patrick’s day. The Castillo. You never tire of its spectacular colours and thunderous splendour. A couple of quiet beers in Bar Pana while everyone else is at the Castillo. The Fireworks. Those rockets that go down and then go back up again. The bronze palm trees and exploding hearts and stars. Paying twice the price for half the quality. Six Euros for three Patatas Bravas. The pomp and celebration of the Ofrenda and the Mare de Deu. The Falleros swanning around blocking up the streets in their finest, each trying to impress with the biggest and most ostentatious flower arrangements. The Five year old Little Princess falleras all flowers, regal smiles and mini legs. Fifty year old Falleras all tear-strewn make up, black lace and cigarettes. Julio Tormo beaming out to Valencia 24 hours a day from the Plaza de la Virgen. “Estas plorant xi-

queta?” Marching bands all formal airs and traditional music during the ofrenda; Dixieland jazz, “tirate de la moto” on the way home. Greenhouse effect fumes streaming into the air from the fireworks. Five days of everyone walking or taking public transport in a car free city centre. Dancing with your grandma at the Verbena. Dancing with someone else’s grandma at the Verbena. The red and black smoke that rises above the city on the night of San Jose. The firemen. Everyone getting soaked in the Plaza Dr Collado. Trying to see six different Cremás and arriving late for each one. The crowd booing the National anthem in the Plaza del Ayuntamiento. The feeling that spring has finally come. Out with the old and in with the new. Tired legs and aching heads. A good square meal when it’s all over. And then, on the twentieth, L’apuntá to set the ball rolling again for next year..

VALENCIA CAVAS

A COMPREHENSIVE CAVA TASTING AT PAGO DE THARSYS The bodega opened its doors in 2002 always with the intention of producing ecologic or organic wines with full respect to the environment and their vineyards. No chemicals are used in the vineyards and only the minimum of natural products in the bodega itself. The bodega introduced their first Ecological wine (with the certificate on the back label) with the 2013 vintage of the Vendimia Nocturna and followed it in 2015 with three cavas -Cava Carlota Suria Brut Naturé, Brut and the Millésime 2015. The Merlot Crianza 2014, was released in 2018 and named ‘Argila’. Now more wines sport the ‘ecologic’ or organic label. The Bodega’s strength lies in its cavas but it also produces a full range of still wines. We rely on the wine fairs to keep abreast of new releases and at the beginning of February 2019 we were privileged to attend an exclusive and comprehensive tasting at the bodega, which has put much into perspective.

We began with the Carlota Suria Brut Naturé, ecologic, a 100% Macabeo with 15 months “en rima” (On the lees) and 12% ABV. This is pale yellow in colour, clean, bright with fine persistent bubbles and a good crown. Melon, green apple, citrus notes (grapefruit) and floral notes on the nose. In the mouth the cava is fresh and clean, between fruit and acidity there are notes of bread and this is a wine which will benefit from another year in bottle. The Carlota Suria Brut organic is also Macabeo with 15 months en rima and 12% ABV. It has more colour than the Brut Naturé and is rounder, more floral and elegant on the nose. In the mouth it retains that roundness, is balanced and has a long elegant finish. The Brut Garnacha Rosado, with its terracotta label, is from a family of wines which were quite ‘avant-garde’ when originally introduced. Garnacha is a naturally fruity and expressive variety and this is a ‘rebel’. With 18 months en rima and 11.5% ABV, it is

a bright strawberry colour with long strings of fast rising fine bubbles, an expressive fruity nose with a mixture of cherry, sweets and other red fruit notes. In the mouth it has a lovely attack, excellent acidity balances the fruit and it has a long dry finish. We loved the slightly unruly character of this wine and have in mind a pairing with a good fidueá! The Bodega has a strong reputation for the quality of its top cavas and we were not disappointed by the next four wines. The Chardonnay Brut 2015 Millésime ecologic has 12% ABV and 24 months en rima. Fine, persistent bubbles rise through a pale gold, clean and bright liquid and on pouring produces a good mousse. Floral on the nose initially (jasmine) it has a wonderful fruit mix of white stone fruit such as peach and apricot and notes of patisserie and confectioner’s cream in the mouth. It is immediately elegant on entry, creamy with well-integrated bubbles and a good length.

11

RIKI WIGLEY & MARIAN DARÁS OF VÍ VID

The Millésime 2015 Garnacha Rosé is 12% ABV but quite different to its younger brother we tasted earlier! By contrast this is a pale salmon colour, almost onion skin, clean, bright and with fine persistent bubbles rising to a rosary on the surface. With 24 months en rima it is very clean and fresh on the nose, there are ripe red fruit notes of berries such as red currant, raspberry and patisserie evident. In the mouth the sensation is perfect, the fruit, alcohol, acidity and the bubbles are totally integrated, ending with a lovely slightly bitter note in a very long satisfying finish which fills the mouth. Extreme elegance. We moved next to the Millésime 2016 biologic Chardonnay Brut Naturé which has two months in French oak before 16 months en rima. This was the first wine with a deep golden colour, it has fine persistent bubbles and patisserie and light oak notes on the nose together with white flowers on a complex mix of fruit such as peach and apricots and vanilla, cinnamon and hazelnuts. In the mouth it is voluptuous on entry, fresher than you might expect from the nose, but has a long full finish with notes of honey. The last of the Cavas we tasted was the 2014 Reserva Ecologico

Millésime Chardonnay 70% and Macabeo. This has 38 months en rima. Despite its greater age it is a paleyellow colour, clean, bright with fine persistent bubbles. On the nose ripe fruit and a base of white flowers, pan de higo with almonds and patisserie. In the mouth this is beautifully fresh, has an attractive acidity, is very wellbalanced and a long elegant finesse in the finish. To keep, this will develop its flavours in bottle. The final sparkling wine was an espumoso, the Alegria which is a blend of Chardonnay with 14 months en rima and Bronx in the liquor d’ expedition. Pale yellow it has steadily rising fine bubbles and white flowers (jasmine) and ripe papaya on the nose. In the mouth you note the Bronx, an American variety which the bodega grows for their Dulce, the grapes dried in the sun before the wine is made. It has a sweetness, is grapey with tropical notes and is a fun, dessert wine which would suit all tastes. Our relationship with the bodega began with our first visit and blog (https://wp.me/p16pqB-3M). In those days Pago de Tharsys was almost unique in Requena in having a bodega tour, never mind that it could also be in the English language! The Bodega has always been at the

forefront of developing enotourism as can be seen from a visit to their website. VÍ Vid has followed these developments and you can read more about this in our reports on initiatives such as the introduction of the ‘Cocktail range’ (https://wp.me/ p16pqB-xB) the ‘Night Harvest’ which wine-lovers could participate in (https://wp.me/p7dfvi-82), as well as new wine releases such as the Valencia City range.

RESTAURANT OF THE MONTH TAPAS BAR OF THE MONTH EL ARENAL

LA BODEGUILLA DEL GATO What a great name for a tapas bar! This roughly translates as ‘The Cat’s Wine Cellar’ but it does sound cooler in Spanish. Arguably, this is still one of Valencia’s best kept secrets and it is nicely hidden away in a mellow corner of the historic centre…

Over the years, members of the ‘24/7 Valencia’ team have been enjoying their wide variety of classic Spanish tapas. In 2019, we enjoyed some grilled octopus cooked to perfection. We savoured tasty cod tapas and ended with a memorable pumpkin & yoghurt dessert with a very crunchy pastry base. This particular evening of sharing tapas was accompanied by a distinctive ‘Caprasia’ Bobal Merlot organic red wine (from Utiel-Requena) with a long finish. In a modern world obsessed with social media, there is something refreshingly ‘old school’ about a tapas bar

that relies instead on word of mouth to reach the public. The staff was welcoming and the service informative, pleasant & efficient throughout the evening.

The music soundtrack was sensual & superb. A heady and nostalgic mixture of Bossa Nova, French Chanson, Gypsy and Cuban sounds of yesteryear. We sat down with the amiable & experienced Head Chef Eric, for an exclusive interview, before the diners started to arrive. 24/7 Valencia: How did ‘Bodeguilla del Gato’ begin? Chef Eric: It was founded in 1998 by the current owners and it started out as a simple tapas bar with cheeses and tablas but it has evolved & developed into the classic Spanish tapas bar that we know today, with far more

choice than when it began. What are your specialties? They include our ‘Rabo de Toro’ and our famous tortilla, squid and our croquettes. Regarding Valencia, we have ‘Esgarraet’ the cod & red peppers dish of the region. Our tapas come from various provinces of Spain. Our bull’s tail is stewed in the Cordobese style. We prepare our dishes with love, listen to the feedback of our clients, adapt & revise accordingly and always aim to serve the very best tapas that we can. Could you describe the interior? It’s somewhat baroque, charged and warm with lots of paintings, posters and illustrations related to Spain on the whole. There’s something for everybody.

13

What is different at the weekends? We have six dishes that you won’t find in the carta during the week like smoked salmon tartare, el foie, a crunchy gorgonzola cheese & ibérico ham combination, tasty garlic prawns and more. Any visitors that have stood out? We have a photo on the wall of the famous flamenco singer Enrique Morente in our restaurant with the owners of ‘La Bodeguilla del Gato’ and we have

had a few sports stars over the years. We get a wide range of public from Spain and abroad. A fair number tell us that they have been recommended to try our tapas specialties via pages like TripAdvisor. It is recommended that you book in advance or come early as it can get busy here and not just at the weekends…

FOOD BY HELEN WESTWATER OF LA OLA FRESCA

REDUCETARIAN RAGU

When I first arrived in Spain about twelve years ago, generally speaking the only vegetarian option was tortilla or grilled vegetables or bizarrely a tuna fish salad! Thankfully, there’s been some re-education on that one and now Valencia boasts a host of good vegetarian & vegan restaurants. However, as I am one of those less enlightened people who will still look forward to a sizzling roast, or eat meat if it is in front of me, I am neither a vegetarian, flexitarian nor a dedicated carnivore. I can understand all the reasons for giving up meat, but am caught between worrying about intensive farming and nostalgia for traditional animal farming and a love of fine cheeses! Therefore, I am relieved to find I have been released from my state of purgatory by a new movement called Reducetarian. A term coined to encompass a non-profit organization dedicated to reducing consumption of meat, eggs and dairy for a healthier lifestyle & decreasing the carbon footprint and the suffering of animals. So, if you are thinking of giving up meat for Lent for religious reasons or otherwise, here is a traditionally meaty recipe (meat-free) to help you enjoy your 40 days. In my opinion, it is much improved without the meat… but then it seems I’m a reducetarian. I hope you enjoy it!

EL MIGUELETE ARENAL

STUNNING VIEWS OF VALENCIA! Other cities have glass skyscrapers from which to view the city but Valencia’s towering icon is ‘El Miguelete’. At one end of the Plaza de la Reina, in the Valencia Cathedral, you can walk past the nun manning a sort of gift shop and pay two euros to climb the Gothic cathedral. It took four centuries to build and was the tallest building in Valencia into the 20th century.

If you are lucky enough (or unlucky, depending on the sensitivity of your ears) to be at the top at the turn of the hour, you will be treated to the voice of the Miguel of the Miguelete — five centuries old, as tall as a man and only a few feet above your head. A little bell above it rings first, leading you to think, “Oh, that’s not bad at all,” right before the Miguel resounds its first BONNNGGGG through your eardrums.

The stairs of the tower are narrow and steep, not meant for the physically challenged or the claustrophobic. The walls are scratched with illegible variations on “I was here”, from the 16th century onwards. At the top, you and fellow climbers spill out into the sunlight of an observation deck. The surrounding walls are topped with wire grid— an annoyance to aspiring photographers but understandable for safety.

The whole city can be seen below. There, the extraordinary roof of ‘El Mercado Central’ and there the Torres de Serranos. On the other side of the Miguelete there are the silhouettes of the City of Arts and Sciences and the cranes of the docks. Is that the sea beyond them, or just the hazy underside of the clouds? Except for the high hills to the southwest there seems to be nothing besides the city stretching to each horizon— a

reminder that, while Valencia may not be the largest city in Spain, it is still huge.

RESTAURANT OF THE MONTH

VALENCIA EL ARENALFOOTBALL

¡ILLA, ILLA, ILLA; NOS VAMOS A SEVILLA! Valencia Football Club secured a place in this year’s Copa Del Rey Final after outgunning Real Betis 3-2 in two epic encounters, thus finally ending over 11 years of misery and frustration for the club’s fans. They can now support their team in a meaningful final in 2019. Not since the victory over Getafe, at the Vicente Calderón in Madrid on the 16th April in 2008, have the club had the opportunity to win such a notable competition. On that day the Valencia side included the quality of Juan Mata, Villa & Silva and ran out comfortable winners 3-1. This time, Valencia only have to overcome Barcelona to get a prestigious piece of silverware in their centenary season! Betis were a gallant adversary in the semi-final and had the added incentive of knowing the ultimate game had already been designated for May 25th in their very own Benito Villamarin Stadium. The first game in Seville saw Valencia initially in real trouble and staring a very uphill battle in the

second leg. Two goals down with twenty minutes to go and the Betis fans in full voice, the odds of Valencia getting something out of the match seemed scarce.Cheryshev halved the deficit with a slick, near post header and then substitute Gameiro outpaced the Betis defence and poked the ball past Joel Robles, in the second minute of injury time, to send the teams back to Valencia on level-pegging. The return leg at the Mestalla will live long in the memory of the spectators. The atmosphere was electric and the Betis fans played their part in creating a wall of sound that reverberated around the stadium. Joaquín, a former Valencia favourite, had scored direct from a corner in the first leg for Betis. He was in the initial eleven starting line-up… along with two other former Los Che players, Sergio Canales and Andreas Guardado. However, probably the best news for the Verdiblancos was that French defender Marc Bartra had recovered from the injury that had

forced him off the field in the first leg… to resume his place in the centre of the Béticos’ defence. Valencia kept faith with Jaume in goal and Marcelino plumped for Gameiro up front with Rodrigo, leaving Santi Mina on the substitute’s bench. Gameiro has been impressive since the start of the year and the Frenchman is finally showing the kind of form that has seen him have successful spells at Paris SaintGermain, Sevilla and Atlético Madrid. Betis shaded the first half with some smooth intricate passing movements that had the Valencia players chasing shadows at times. The home side came out much the stronger after the interval and eventually got the breakthrough ten minutes into the second half. Great play by Piccini gave Gameiro a wonderful scoring opportunity in a one on one with the Betis goalkeeper. However, instead of shooting the

35

former Sevilla striker unselfishly squared the ball to an unmarked Rodrigo who made no mistake from a few yards out. A crescendo of noise greeted the ball hitting the back of the net. This was followed by sighs of relief as Valencia fans immediately realised the visitors had now to score three goals to proceed, because of the away goals rule format. Valencia’s amazing comeback in the previous round served to warn everyone that the contest was far from over and the team remained focused until the final whistle, limiting their opponents to just a couple of chances. The final whistle led to joyous scenes and the continuous chants of "Illa, Illa, Illa; Nos vamos a Sevilla" as the team

celebrated their victory with a lap of honour around the pitch. Well into the early morning, fans were still celebrating around the stadium and the city. Information released shortly after the semi-final victory suggests Valencia will be allocated around 23,000 tickets, which will not be enough to satisfy demand. The official capacity of Estadio Benito VillamarĂn is 61,000 but for security reasons there will be only 58,000 tickets available for this specific match. Apart from Sevilla, the other city that Valencia fans would love to visit in May is Baku in Azerbaijan. The Olympic Stadium there will host the 2019 Europa League final and Los

Che are still in the competition along with 15 other clubs. The comfortable 3-0 aggregate defeat of Celtic was rewarded with a two legged tie with FC Krasnodar. The club that is in the South of Russia are arguably based in the most soccer-mad city in the country. It controversially missed out on being a World Cup venue in 2018 despite having had a completely new stadium built in 2016 by local entrepreneurs that has a healthy capacity of 35,000. Currently lying second in their own league, behind FC Zenit Saint Petersburg, they will be a difficult opponent and Valencia will need to be at the top of their game if they wish to progress to the quarter-final stage. ENGLISH SPEAKING SPANISH LAWYER VIRGINIA DE LA CUADRA GALERA 1 – Tell us a bit about your legal background, travels and experiences in the English-speaking world…

gave me more confidence. It was a challenging experience, but it made me the person I am today.

During my last year of studying law at Valencia University I decided to head to England to work and to improve my English skills. It was an incredible experience – everything was new; the people, the culture, the scenery, the weather, of course! Also, things were very different from Spain within an employment context – the way that businesses operated, how teams interacted, the fact there were so many nationalities working together. I loved it, although there were some difficult moments. I worked hard and had to deal with situations I never thought I would. Facing these challenges made me better at my job than before and

2 – Describe your law firm and the areas it covers. When I returned to Spain from the UK, I wanted to make the most of my two biggest strengths; my understanding of people and my legal background. This led me to helping expats settle in Spain. One of the first things expats need to sort out is where to live. My company specialises in civil and property law, which includes conveyancing, self-building, buying off-plan, new-build properties, boundary disputes, construction and structural defects. Basically, we deal with all possible legalities associated

with buying or selling property, either as a home or as an investment. Additionally, some of our clients require assistance with setting up all kinds of businesses, whether that’s bars, restaurants or online companies. In order to provide a full service for my clients, we also assist with Family Law matters. For example, I help my clients to draft wills to present to notaries, ensuring their wishes are protected under Spanish law. We handle rental contracts, deposits, trusts, power of attorney and valuations. I am the link between my clients and the professionals they need to deal with; estate agents, relocation companies, banks, surveyors, notaries and anything else in between.

people and official ways of operating, the truth is that the world moves faster than the law. It’s a tricky area to regulate because there are so many factors involved, and so many interests related to it. This uncertainty surrounding the rental market is exacerbated by incessant changes in the law, specifically in regards to tourist rentals. My firm stays on top of it, so our clients don’t have to.

language barrier. Many expats arrive having studied basic Spanish, but when they start facing day-to-day situations, they realise mastering the language takes more time, especially when it comes to dealing with complicated and wordy legal matters. Additionally, despite EU regulations applying across Europe, there are still a number of differences between various international laws and Spanish law, and these can be very confusing, especially when trying to comprehend them in a second language. Another significant issue our clients face is who to trust. They are in an unknown land – they need someone on their side, with expert knowledge, who they know has their best interests at heart. 4 – How does your company differ from Spanish speaking lawyers and what are the advantages of working with your firm?

years, and using the English language every day, I am bilingual. This allows me to clearly communicate with my clients, and to explain legal matters in language they can understand. Last but by no means least, having been an expat myself, I understand first-hand the issues my clients are facing. I know what they need, what matters to them, and how they wish to be treated. 5 – What are the long-term potential problems for English speaking clients looking to move to or currently living in Spain, that your company can fix?

Obviously, the most pressing longterm issue my clients are facing right now is Brexit. This won’t just affect the British, the effects of the uncertainty and potential legal changes ahead will be felt across many countries.

6 – Do you have other interests outside of work? Of course! I’ve always been passionate about travel. Living in the UK, Gatwick and Heathrow were so convenient that the option to explore the world was right on my doorstep, and I certainly made the most of it! Lately, after enjoying watching MasterChef with my daughter, I’ve been getting really into cooking. I have always been happy with a simple ham baguette, and while I still am, we’re having a lot of fun trying different international recipes, such as Beef Wellington, Thai curries and Beef bourguignon. WHY VALENCIA ?

WHY VALENCIA ? Why Valencia? ¿Por qué Valencia? It’s a reasonable question, I suppose. Why do I, and others from around the world, choose to live here? After all, the third-largest city in Spain doesn’t normally rate on most people’s “must-sees”. The Lonely Planet guide, in its suggested city-based itinerary, talks at length about Madrid and Barcelona and touches on Valencia to a certain extent but not with the eagerness that it extols the beauties of Seville. Some other guides don’t even mention the city, or slip it into a paragraph in the Catalunya chapter or a side note before the Costa Blanca. Valencia has no ancient buildings like the Colosseum or the Alhambra. Nor does it possess great monuments like Big Ben or the Arc de Triomphe (although the ‘Ciudad de las Artes y las Ciencias’ is quite impressive). There are no famous museums like the Louvre or the Prado (although the IVAM puts on a good exhibition or two). The town beach isn’t quite Bondi or the Copacabana.

The people are gregarious and the nightlife can be wild, but that is a characteristic of Spain as a whole rather than the mid-Mediterranean coast in particular. It is not the most aesthetically beautiful of cities (although the streets of Carmen can be rather pretty). Arguably, some drivers have little respect for pedestrian crossings…

miss without risk of exam failure, you used the part of your brain. For large decisions, such as who to marry or what career to follow, logic was too blunt a tool. For such choices, you needed to disregard logic and go with your instinct.

If I was to move to Spain, would it not be more logical to follow the majority of expats? My brother’s girlfriend suggested I go to Madrid. My cousin told me Barcelona was the place to be. Sometimes it seems half the British Isles are relocating to the Costa del Sol or the Balearic Islands.

Perhaps I can blame a restless gene…the Irish have always been wanderers. Maybe it was a touch of seasonal affective disorder, a casual suggestion made by a work colleague, a passage from Hemingway, a chance meeting on a bus between Malaga and Granada, the pull of the Mediterranean. Or perhaps it all goes back to the oranges...

And yet, “everybody else goes there” has never seemed like a good enough argument to me. In my long-ago university days, a friend outlined her philosophy about decision-making. For small decisions, she explained, such as what to eat for dinner or how many lectures you could

I suppose my moving to Valencia falls into the category of a “large decision”.

I’ve always loved oranges. In the depths of winter, they brightened the fruit shelves of the supermarket. I would dig my nails deep into the peel and pull it away so that the juice stained my fingernails and my hands smelled of fruit. The flesh in my mouth

was like tasting sunshine. When I was a child growing up in Ireland, oranges usually came from Spain, with a sticky label to denote their city of origin. Sometimes they were from Seville. Other times they were from Valencia. I think the first time I heard about Valencia was in a Sunday Times travel supplement. They published an article about the “smaller cities” of Europe, places that didn’t hold the cachet of Paris or Athens or Rome, but it was worth passing a long weekend. Places like Ghent, like Lyon, like Valencia. However, in the summer I was still a long way from Spain. In fact, I was in Scotland. My employers had announced layoffs in the Irish office, and I had chosen to move to Glasgow rather than the unemployment queue. The Scots are a friendly bunch and there are few places more beautiful than the Highlands in summer. However, the prospect of another murky Scottish winter set me wondering why, if I was going to live abroad, I didn’t choose somewhere in a more favorable latitude. My friend in Ireland knew someone with an apartment on the Costa del Sol, and suggested we spend a holiday there in September. My friend in Scotland was planning to spend a weekend in Barcelona at about the same time. A plan formed: I booked a flight into Malaga and another out of Barcelona. I met a Spanish work colleague in the canteen and told him about my plan, asking where would be worth stopping along the way. “Valencia?” he suggested. He pronounced it the Spanish way. Balen-thee-ah. In September I spent a few days in Fuengirola with two Irish friends. I was good to see my pals again, but

Fuengirola itself did not impress. The phrase book proved useless since most of the bar staff were British and many of the restaurants did not even have menus in Spanish. And towards the end of the week, the sun disappeared. The only place less dreary than the Costa del Sol is the Costa del Sol in the rain. I escaped into Hemingway’s ‘For Whom the Bell Tolls’. One of the characters, Pilar, talks of Valencia. Do not malign Valencia, she said, for it was there she ate melon and paella, there she fell in love with a handsome matador (in Hemingway’s Spanish books, there is usually a handsome matador hiding somewhere). I left my friend at Malaga airport and took the bus to Granada. When I failed to understand the rapid-fire instructions of the bus driver, a student translated for me. Her name was Lola; she shared a flat in Wolverhampton with an Irish girl and her English was full of expressions such as “yer man”. She said “oh, you should go to Valencia. I once had a boyfriend from Valencia. It’s a great city.” So that was two votes for Spain’s third city, both from Spaniards. Plus the Sunday Times Section. Plus Hemingway. Plus the sticky labels on oranges. Why not? During my three days in Valencia, something unexpected happened. I have been to more beautiful cities, and more famous ones. I have strolled down the streets of the River Seine and marvelled at the Eiffel Tower, but never felt I wanted to live in Paris. I have stopped to gawp at the buskers on Las Ramblas and looked out from the dizzying towers of Sagrada Familia, but never felt I wanted to live in Barcelona. However, when I sat in the Plaza de la Virgen and watched the children chasing pigeons in the

sunlight, I felt, oddly, as if I had arrived somewhere I had been trying to reach all my life. So I decided that, come what may, I would return. The following month, back in Glasgow, the clocks ticked back one hour and the prospect of dark evenings strengthened my resolve. I returned to Ireland for Christmas, and booked my flight to Spain in January. And so here I am. It’s a story I’ve heard repeated, in many guises, by foreigners here. They come by accident, stumbling across the city along the way. Barcelona is too expensive, with accommodation impossible to find. Madrid is too cold and too frantic. The Costa Blanca is too touristy. They come on the Erasmus programme and find a reason to extend their course. They follow a lover. They follow a friend. They follow the sea breeze. They come in March, following the smell of burning papier-mâché, and stay longer than they planned. Of course, not everyone falls under Valencia’s spell. They find some of the streets dirty and the language barrier too much to cope with. They can’t find work, or they find work and are paid in buttons. They get tied in knots trying to deal with the bureaucracy. They have to reorganize their day to deal with weird closing times and eating hours. They find the chaos of the festivals too much… Those of us who love this city accept these facts, but we love it all the same. So, why Valencia? If you have to ask, nobody can tell you. There is only one answer. ¿Por qué no? Fiona Honor Hurley Article © 2019 24/7 Valencia

VALENCIA MUSIC

BOB DYLAN PLAYS VALENCIA IN MAY! “Don’t criticize understand.” Bob Dylan

what

you

can’t

Bob Dylan remains an enigma to this day. He infuriated some literary purists when he was awarded the highly prestigious Nobel Prize for Literature and then reportedly angered the Nobel Prize judges by making an ambiguous excuse for not attending the award ceremony in person. He certainly wasn’t going to make things too easy for his foes or his followers! Like Frank Sinatra, whose repertoire he has covered in recent times, Dylan likes to do things his way. “A lot of people can't stand touring but to me it’s like breathing. I do it because I'm driven to do it.” Bob Dylan

Indeed, Dylan has been on his “Never Ending Tour’ since 1988. As a young man, Dylan had a fondness for marijuana and “cheap red wine.” Though a very acquired taste, he has perhaps become like a somewhat special vino that is arguably getting better with time. He is not just a singer, he is undoubtedly a living legend and part of that myth is somebody who is bigger than any fad or fashion. He is the words and he is the music. After 38 official albums, for all his musical weaknesses, his strengths are many and the whole remains greater than the sum of its parts. While so many ageing bands and singers get written off in old age as mere nostalgia trips… his reputation as an artist continues to grow through films, awards, poetry, new album releases,

radio shows, box sets and touring. “The land created me. I'm wild and lonesome. Even as I travel the cities, I'm more at home in the vacant lots.” Bob Dylan Dylan never lost the will or need to morph and adapt to his surroundings. He was born Robert Zimmerman in 1941, the Minnesota son of Jewish parents of Ukrainian & Lithuanian descent. Indeed, his paternal grandparents had escaped the pogroms of Odessa in what was then known as the Russian Empire. Perhaps his restlessness comes from way back… Bob grew up with the exciting sounds of rock’n’roll as a teenager in the 1950s with Elvis, Little Richard and

BOB DYLAN

Jerry Lee Lewis blasting on the radio. However, he was turned on even more by folk music around the time he got to University… reflecting that “the songs are filled with more despair, more sadness, more triumph, more faith in the supernatural, much deeper feelings.” Describing his decision to change his name to Dylan, he has sometimes justified it with a love of Dylan Thomas’ poetry as well having the “wrong name and the wrong parents…after all, this is the land of the free.” After a year at college, he dropped out, visited a dying Woody Guthrie in hospital and moved to Greenwich Village where he quickly enveloped himself in the local folk scene. As his star grew, an increasingly interested press and public were drawn to Dylan’s music and words. These were lyrics so different to what had been expected and accepted in popular music before… “And take me disappearing through the smoke rings of my mind Down the foggy ruins of time, far past the frozen leaves

The haunted, frightened trees, out to the windy beach Far from the twisted reach of crazy sorrow Yes, to dance beneath the diamond sky with one hand waving free Silhouetted by the sea, circled by the circus sands With all memory and fate driven deep beneath the waves Let me forget about today until tomorrow”

Bob Dylan He was the archetypal angry folk protest singer with ‘Blowin' in the Wind’ and ‘Masters of War.’ Then he was the insolent, druggy electric poet of the highly productive ‘Like a Rolling Stone’ and ‘Blonde on Blonde’ era and then the contented family man of ‘Nashville Skyline’ and ‘New Morning’ as the sixties came to an end. His separation from his wife Sara (‘Sad Eyed Lady of the Lowlands’) in the mid-seventies brought a creative burst with “Blood on the Tracks”, which many see as one of his finest albums. He surprised many when he turned to Evangelical Christianity in the late 1970s and released the albums ‘Slow Train Coming’ and ‘Saved’, which related to his interest in the Born Again

movement. Over the last 30 years, he has released some acclaimed albums including ‘Love and Theft’ and ‘Time Out of Mind’. More recent albums have seen him revisiting the ‘Great American Songbook’ covering pre-rock’n’roll genres not generally associated with him, bringing a more jazzy and swinging feel to his music in concert. Bob Dylan still divides opinions to this day. He just wouldn’t want it any other way! Will McCarthy
