OCEANOGRÀFIC VALENCIA

OCEANOGRÀFIC VALENCIA In the hustle and bustle of the city of Valencia, sometimes it’s nice to take a break and imagine a more serene world. There’s no better place to do that than at the Oceanogràfic. The Oceanogràfic is Europe’s largest aquarium and it’s located right alongside the City of Arts and Sciences in Valencia. The aquarium is divided into 11 habitats and is home to 45,000 animals of 500 different species. The largest habitat at the Oceanogràfic is the Oceans. Here, you can walk through a mesmerizing tunnel that

holds seven million litres of water and represents a journey through the Atlantic Ocean from the Canary Islands to the Bermudas. While travelling through this tunnel, various species of sharks and rays swim next to and above you – close enough that you feel you could touch them.

the Temperate Tunnel begins – one that stimulates the underwater journey from Europe to America through the Atlantic Ocean. At the end of the Temperate Tunnel lie five tanks of deep blue sea creatures and various aquariums filled with jellyfish, sea horses, ctenophores, eels and pipe fish.

In the Temperate and Tropical Zones, one can find species that live in seas spanning from the equator to the polar circles. The entrance of the Temperate and Tropical Zones is home to an outdoor seal exhibit that represents the rocky shores of the Atlantic Ocean. Once guests walk past the seals, they will enter a room that contains algae from the northern California region and the seabed of the Izu Peninsula. Here,

After the Temperate Tunnel, guests reach the Tropical Room – one that is nothing short of breathtaking. The ceiling of the room is designed as the keel of a boat, which enhances the feeling of being underwater. Guests are surrounded by panoramic aquariums filled with colourful coral, fish and eels from the Indo-Pacific and Caribbean Sea. These aquariums hold thousands of fish – watching them swim around

FESTIVAL SEASON

JULY-AUGUST

Summer’s here. It’s hot inside and there’s nothing new on Netflix. So it’d be better to get outside, there’s plenty to do, especially given that it is festival season! If you’re already keen as mustard to get into it but you’re still going to be stuck in the city for a while, don’t worry! You should definitely check out the series of concerts that will take place between 30 June and 25 July at the Jardines de Viveros in Valencia during the Concerts de Vivers. They’ll be also offering a complete gastronomic space so you'll be able to enjoy some nice tapas along with some red, red wine while you listen to UB40, Jamie Callum and other great artists from the national and international scene. The tickets for each of the 14 events in total are sold individually at (http://conciertosdeviveros.com). Now it’s time to call your mates, get those tickets, dig out your camping

gear, cooling box full of beers and start looking forward to some of the following cracking festivals. Ah, don't forget your sun cream either! Speaking from experience, you don’t want to be called a “guiri-gamba” all the time by the tanned locals. Ok, so we're going to start with one that should have already been crossed out on your festival list long ago. It’s no secret that the FIB (fiberfib.com) is the Spanish festival that most attracts British and Irish public for a number of reasons. Its location right next the Med, a line-up that never disappoints and the great overall atmosphere. The word international is mentioned in the name because that is truly what it is. This year’s highlights include: The Weeknd, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Pete Doherty, Kasabian, Noel Gallagher and more from 13 – 16 July! Also set close to the beach surrounded by a natural park, actually in the exact same venue as the FIB but a month later, the Rototom Sunsplash (rototomsunsplash.com) takes place during August. Same location but on a totally different note, this is considered by some as the world's biggest reggae

festival. Although maybe the label reggae falls a bit short to describe the musical diversity that'll be on display during the eight days with over 200 performances. But can you really endure and enjoy eight festival days? Thanks to the great variety of activities and workshops in the different zones, you might end up asking yourself why the festival doesn’t last another eight days. Artists include The Wailers, U-Roy, Alpha Blondy, Shaggy, Beenie Man, Youssou N’Dour, Toots & the Maytals and many more… If you like your electro and theme parties, then Medusa Sunbeach Festival (www.medusasunbeach.com) is your cup of tea. This year's theme is ‘Jungle Carnival’ and although Cullera isn’t exactly the Amazon rainforest, the organizers are going to do their best to create an incredible atmosphere. As is done in the renowned Tomorrowland, this year's main stage is going to be huge and bursting with visual effects and sound equipment. Some of the top artists that will be on this amazing stage from 10 – 14 August are: Dimitri Vegas, Steve Aoki and Major Lazer. Quite ironically, the only festival taking

twentyfoursevenvalencia 11

place in Benidorm is the one that attracts mainly a Spanish crowd. The Low Festival (lowfestival.es), running from 27 – 30 July, is a great option to discover the Spanish national music scene along with some of the usual suspects at festivals like The Pixies, Franz Ferdinand and the Hives. If you’re feeling adventurous, you might want to go on a road trip heading towards one of the fantastic festivals that aren’t that close to Valencia. My pick this summer would be to make your

way north mainly for two reasons: to escape from the deadly heat and to go and pay a visit to the BBK Live festival (bilbaobbklive.com) on 6 –8 July. This festival is known for the unique views of the Basque mountains from its campsite and its solid reputation for good music including Depeche Mode, The Killers, Primal Scream and more… From there you could then head west following the Camino de Santiago, only that this time the pilgrimage would end at Paredes de Coura on 16 – 19

August. I was planning to keep it secret but this village right on the border

between Portugal and Galicia (on the Portuguese side) is hosting one of the

most impressive line-ups I've seen in years. Here are some names, see if you agree: Future Islands, Badbadnotgood,

Foxygen, Timber Timbre and the list goes on...

Enjoy your Summer; enjoy your music, that’s all!

THE PORT AREA LA FÁBRICA DE HIELO

VALENCIA’S POBLADOS MARÍTIMOS

(THE PORT AREA) Valencia’s Poblados Marítimos have been through a lot. Over the years they have been destroyed by fire, suffered the worst of the city’s floods, and been flattened by bombs. Not so long ago, the area’s residents had to put up with the America’s Cup crowd swanning about and Formula One cars careering around their once peaceful streets and crumbling houses… The Poblados Marítimos are made up of three of Valencia’s most traditional and most neglected neighbourhoods; El Grao near the port and along the seafront to the north, El Cabanyal and El Canyamelar. El Grao was founded by Jaume I in 1238, on the site of what is thought to be the old Roman port. Its residents gradually spread out to what was then called the ‘‘barrio de pescadores’’ or fisherman’s district, later to be known as the Cabanyal and the Canyamelar. They were painted by the Flemish artist Wijngaerde in 1563

as a small group of barracas (traditional Valencian wooden cottages with steep thatched roofs). Just as their original name suggests, the main activity was fishing (with a bit of smuggling thrown in) while the residents of the Grao were mainly employed in jobs connected to the port.

that the water could not easily escape to the sea, and the many one and twostorey houses in the neighbourhood were almost completely covered, leading to great losses.

A great fire in 1796 completely destroyed the wooden structures of the Cabanyal. The fire was a huge tragedy for the district and stayed in the collective memory for years to come. The area was rebuilt but this time the mostly wooden (again) barracas were organised into a series of wide streets running parallel to the sea. Each street was wide enough to stretch out the fishing nets for drying, as described in Blasco Ibáñez’s novel ‘Flor de Mayo’.

It wasn’t until 1897 that the Poblados Marítimos officially became part of the city of Valencia. Even then, they were physically separated from the rest of the city by four kilometres of agricultural land, occasionally punctuated by a few buildings like Palacio de Ayora and later the ‘Isla Perdida’. The ValenciaBarcelona railway line, which ran along what is now C/ Serrería, was another physical barrier. All of which meant that the people of the maritime neighbourhoods developed a strong feeling of having an identity separate from the rest of the city’s citizens.

The barracas were gradually replaced by brick houses (the last barraca was demolished in 1939) but the structure of the streets remained, and still remains today, almost like a sea wall running horizontal to rather than towards the sea. The civil war brought more tragedy to the area. With its proximity to the port, bombing raids caused the almost complete destruction of El Grao and the whole area had to be rebuilt after the war. Then came the great floods of 1957. The design of the streets meant

More than any other part of the city, they have kept Valencian as their mother tongue and Spanish was rarely spoken in the area until the 1950s and ‘60s. The area also has its very own Easter festival, the ‘Semana Santa Marinera’, which takes place solely in this part of the city. The religious icons and cofradías (brotherhoods) of sinisterlooking Nazarenes march through the district escorted by the granaderos (grenadiers) in Napoleonic uniforms, which are copies of originals stolen as

twentyfoursevenvalencia 13

POBLADOS MARÍTIMOS

trophies from retreating French soldiers at the end of the French occupation of Spain from 1807-1814. The neighbourhood also goes against the grain when it comes to football. Cabanyal FC formed in 1907, changed its name to Levante FC in 1909 and later became the modern-day Levante UD. To this day, most of the Levante club’s fan base lives in or has links with the Poblados Marítimos. They are even different when it comes to facial hair. A bizarre study by the Universidad Politécnica showed that the percentage of men with beards is up to 10% higher in the Poblados Marítimos than any other part of the city. The low-rise, single family houses and the high number of small family-owned businesses (more than 3,000 in the three neighbourhoods) creates an atmosphere more similar to a village than a district of a large Spanish city, with people sitting out on their dining room chairs outside their own front doors. This is the kind of sense of community that gave rise to organisations like ‘‘Salvem el Cabanyal’’, which successfully helped block the planned

extension of Avenida Blasco Ibáñez through the heart of El Cabanyal to the sea. They also claim that in the last decade the area has been systematically excluded from any development or restoration projects, leading to even more deterioration. Indeed, things are slowly improving and there are now plans for serious investment from public and private sources. Indeed, all sorts of alternative and very affordable bars like ‘Bar La Paca’ (C/ del Rosario, 30) and multi-disciplinary venues like ‘La Fábrica del Hielo’ (C/ Pavia, 37) have been popping up in the last few years. Though the area will undoubtedly change with gentrification, there are plenty of places which will hopefully keep the spirit of the place alive like the Cabanyal’s old Casinet (Sociedad Musical Unión de Pescadores) at the end of C/ Progreso on C/ José Benlliure, 272. It’s a large, noisy old bar which hasn’t really altered since the 1900s and has long been at the centre of the community as the home of the Fisherman’s Union. And then there’s the C/ de la Reina, with its popular modernist houses decorated with shiny broken ceramic tiles and wrought iron.

There’s also, of course, Casa Montaña on C/ José Benlliure, 69… one of the oldest bodegas in Valencia, which has been providing people with wine and beer since 1836. Now a nice little tapas bar, if you can’t find room in the old shop entrance front bar, the place balloons out through the back. In El Grao, the real must-see is the Reales Atarazanas, the 14th century shipyards with their five long magnificent Gothic arches in Plaza Tribunal de les Aigües. Just across the street you can get a real taste of the Grao by having a caña and a toasted bocadillo de habas in the dusty old Casa Calabuig at the very end of Avenida del Puerto, 336, by the port. So, if you are popping out of the pizzeria or McDonalds or into the Irish pub for a pint of Guinness and wondering about how hard it is to tell one European city’s faceless shopping centre from another, why not take a little trip down to the ‘Poblados Marítimos’ of Valencia… David Rhead and José Marín Article © 2017 24/ 7 Valencia

RESTAURANT OF THE MONTH

CLECTIC OPEN KITCHEN The ‘24/7 Valencia’ team have lunched and dined out at ‘Clectic’ on numerous occasions over the years. It’s open every day, a really relaxing place to enjoy your food and drink and the restaurant does live up to its name by providing a truly eclectic choice of tasty dishes from around the world. This is truly a culinary trip around the globe, from the Middle East to Thailand to France or Spain and then onto the Americas! The interior is warm and spacious, with plenty of wooden tables and comfy chairs as well an entire muro offering cushions or a sofa to support diners’

backs. Indeed, you can enjoy art and photography on the walls by local artists with exhibitions throughout the year. The music soundtrack is nice and varied, with indie, Americana, world music, ambient, funk, jazz and more… You have a great view on this quiet corner of Cánovas, as one side is entirely constructed with a huge glass window. A new feature is that the window is now detachable all year round, so you can enjoy a natural breeze to accompany your lunch or dinner if you choose to dine in this part of the restaurant… Given that this was a hot summer night and we were thirsty, we went for a very pleasant rosado (rosé) wine from Valencia, a ‘Frailes Monastrell’ (13€) that lasted us the whole evening. We had planned on gin & tonics afterwards but the wine left us nicely mellow and gently merry!

So, to the food. Our charming maître d' was Lauren, a very well-travelled and informative host who knows his food, drink and music! It was he that suggested our choice of three tapas plus a salad on this mellow midweek night for the menú degustación. Firstly, we decided to investigate the ‘Sung Choi Bao’, which was a refreshing combination of Thai-style carne guisado in wraps of lettuce, making for a memorable combination of very fresh salad with cooked and spicy beef & pork …a very practical dish that is deservedly popular in Thailand, Vietnam and China. Talking of faraway lands, Lauren has visited Iran and was justly able to recommend the Berenjena al estilo persa con carne, menta, nueces y queso de oveja (Persian-style eggplant with meat, mint, nuts and sheep cheese). Accompanied with filling Lebanese

bread, this was a very distinctive yet agreeable dish with finely-cut sprouts of onion providing a wonderful contrast to the eggplant, the mixture of pork & beef and minty ingredients, the crunchy nuts and soft cheese. A dish with depth… Our final dish was ‘Tacos con chili con carne’ from Mexico and a really solid yet succulent dish to savour as a couple or in a group. Very satisfying and not in any way overpowering, this is food made with confidence and it shows in the final result. As Clectic tells us, their philosophy is “healthy and cosmopolitan food with fresh ingredients and prepared with love”. Included in the degustación deal is a huge ‘supersalad’ and we plumped for the recommended Ensalada Thai with lettuce, very fresh cherry tomatoes, lime, crystal noodles, carrot, cucumber, spicy herbs (a superb mint), peanuts and wide & long, nutritious brotes

de soja sprouts. A highly colourful,

ample and satisfyingly varied salad to accompany our meal! Laurent

very impressed. It was light, fluffy, a generous portion and filling, and

exquisitely cooked at just the right level, as the host says, “it’s all about ‘el timing’

so that it doesn’t burn and lose texture”. We have yet to find a better cheesecake in Valencia in 20 years of dining out on the Mediterranean coast.

The service was wonderful, so we left a healthy tip and we strolled home

very much sated and happy with this memorable trip around the world during one evening in Valencia… 24/7 Valencia Team

FOOD

MANGO CHUTNEY

By Helen Westwater The word chutney comes from the word ‘chatna’, which means lip-smackingly tasty or, as we say in ‘La Ola Fresca’, “YUMBA”. Chutneys are a marriage between recipes that originated in northern India, combined in an AngloIndian way with the more English method of preserving fruits with sugar and vinegar. The result proving again that diversity and integration are the spice of life! Chutneys are a great condiment in addition to curries, any cold meats, cheeses and salads plus the key ingredient of another Anglo-Indian recipe, Coronation chicken. Although you can find mango chutney in Asian food shops such as Taj Mahal, it is not so readily available in Valencia… but mangos certainly are. Cultivated for 4000 years in India, the mangrove is said to have provided shade for the Buddha to rest and is the national fruit of India. Juicy and sweet, it conjures up the flavours and scents of summer. To quote from Vikram Seth’s ‘A Suitable Boy’, “To steel yourself against mangoes showed a degree of iciness that was almost inhuman”! This recipe is adapted from a recipe by the Indian-born actress, food and travel writer, Madhur Jaffrey. PREPARATION

You will need mangos that are slightly ripe (i.e. not fully ripe to eat as they are, but not so unripe that they stick to your tongue in that alarming uncured olive way!) Peel and cut them into small pieces. Finely chop the onion and finely grate the ginger. Leave to one side. Prepare the spices, de-seeding the cardamom seeds and toasting the cilantro. Mix all the spices together.

MANGO CHUTNEY Add the vinegar and sugar to the pan and heat at first on high, stirring, and then quickly reduce heat. Cook for about 4-5 minutes until the sugar has dissolved. Add all the rest of the ingredients. Cook for around 25 minutes, stirring at times and being careful the sugar does not burn. The mixture should turn into a sticky syrup with the chunks of fruit, clearly visible. Turn into your sterilized preserving jars and seal. Once in the preserving jars, your chutney should last for at least 6 months. Once open, use within 3 weeks. Keep in the fridge ready to use instantly, or combine with cooked chicken, mayonnaise (or yogurt), cream and curry powder for the perfect summer Coronation chicken! Feliz Verano a Todos! Their carta is extensive with a wide selection of pastas & pizzas including chicken, bacon, cheese and tropical fruit specialities. Lovers of Italian vino can enjoy their Lambrusco as well as Spanish & Italian wines. VALENCIA FOOTBALL

VALENCIA START TRAINING FOR THE NEW SEASON Sixteen of the Valencia first team squad returned to training at Ciudad Deportiva of Paterna on 3 July to start getting themselves ready for another assault on La Liga. Jaume, Montoya, Garay, Abdennour, Santos, Vezo, Robert Ibáñez, Parejo, Bakkali, Medrano, Rodrigo, Orellana, Nando, Santi Mina, Zaza and Negredo will go through a plethora of physical, medical and nutritional studies over three or four days before leaving for the club’s training camp at Évian-les-Bains on 7 July. Many fans will also know that Valencia Mestalla just missed out on promotion to La Liga 1/2/3 at the final hurdle. However, the performances of these youngsters have not gone unnoticed and consequently five to seven of the Mestalla B squad will be rewarded and join the first team players on the tour of the French and Swiss Alps. It seems at last the management at the club are looking to aggressively promote youth and hopefully several of these young stars will have the same kind of impact that Carlos Soler has had

on the first team in the near future. One of them is likely to be ‘Toni’ Lato, who has just signed an improved and extended contract until 2021 with a reported 80 million euro buy-out clause. This young international from La Pobla de Vallbona follows in the footsteps of Soler, who signed a similar contract earlier this year. It is highly likely several more of the Mestalla squad will be offered comparative deals in the near future. Diego Alves and Cancelo, who have had recent commitments with Brazil and Portugal respectively, have been given official time off and do not have to report back until 17 July. Vinícius Araújo, who was on loan at SD Huesca, has also been given extended leave to the same date because he was involved in the Aragonese club’s play-off game with the eventual winners, Getafe. As a result, all three are to miss the friendly matches between Lausanne, Sporting Lisbon and the newly arranged game between Los Chés and Estrella Deportiva du Sahel (Étoile du Sahel) Tunisia. Other notable absentees of the initial phase of the tour are José Luis Gayà and Carlos Soler, finalists in the Under-21 European championships that Germany have just won in Poland. Nani returns

from Confederations Cup duty with the unfortunate tag of being the player who took the penalty that knocked his country out of the competition at the semi-final stage. The three return to training on 20 July and are pencilled in to join all the other squad members who are heading to North America. Games are scheduled in Canada against New York Cosmos on the 22nd and against FC Cincinnati in Nippert Stadium in Ohio on the 24th. The American side are likely to have Josu in their squad, a product of La Masia school of football in Barcelona where he played alongside Gerard Deulofeu. The third phase of the Valencia preseason sees the club return to Europe and play top English and German clubs. Firstly, there is a trip to Vitality Stadium in Bournemouth, where they are likely to face the formidable pair of Jermain Defoe and Nathan Aké on 30 July, and then they head to northern Germany to take on Werder Bremen. This is arguably the most interesting of all the pre-season matches and many of the fans from both sides still remember the two spicy confrontations in the Europa League in 2010. Vying for a place in the quarter-finals, Valencia headed to the Weserstadion

VALENCIA BOOKS

VALENCIA BOOKS Editorial Sargantana Tell us about Editorial Sargantana....

Editorial Sargantana are publishers that will have been active for two years next September. Founded by three partners from the publishing sector, we wanted to fill a gap in the market for local issues, and for writers in Valencia who needed a publishing house that would give them a voice and allow them to reach both a local and national readership. After working with themes and with local Valencian writers for 1 1/2 years, we have opened up the Basque market with local writers from Bilbao, Álava and Vitoria. Two books have worked very well there and opened the door to the publishers in the Basque market. From publishers who were concerned with

local Valencia issues, we have turned into a local publishing company that now focuses on subjects of any region in Spain. Being young local publishers made us encounter a lot of competition and bumps along the way to achieve good distribution, which we have solved by doing a lot of promotion work for each book we publish. At Editorial Sargantana, we give great importance and care to our authors, who are the most important asset of the publisher. We have created a wonderful atmosphere with them, a great family of authors is forming and creating a really good friendship between them.

are the books with most demand in the market and that we have more success with positioning in the bookstores. Examples of successful Valencian books would include Vicent Marco’s ‘De Categoría Internacional’ with more than 4,000 books sold, ‘La Valencia Insólita’ by Roberto Tortosa with over 3,000 books sold, ‘Historia de Valencia en Pildoritas’ by José Vilaseca or ‘Cuánto Sabes de la Comunidad Valenciana?’ by Marta Landete.

Could you tell us about the key books?

In addition, we have just published the first bilingual (English / Spanish) tourist guide to Valencia by Javier Sprang and a book in pop-up format about Fallas in Castilian, English and Valencian versions by Blanca Llácer.

In Editorial Sargantana we are very happy with almost all the books published, but the collection of books with greater sales is without a doubt the books regarding local themes. They

As for novels, we are very happy with many of them. It is a much more difficult issue to position in bookstores because of genre competition. We could highlight ‘Diario de una Sombra’ by María

García-Lliberós with nearly 2,000 books sold, stories by Laura Girón (‘País de Paso’ y ‘País de Destino’), ‘35 Grados a Tu Sombra’ by Nacho García Nas, with a cover illustration by Paco Roca, and Manolo García’s ‘El Ultimo de la Fila.’ Finally, we have just translated the wellknown English writer Jason Webster into Spanish with his collection of the detective Max Cámara books. Last April, we published ‘O el Toro Te Mata a Ti’ (Or the Bull Kills You) with a great reception among the Spanish public. In the next month of October, the next book in the series, ‘Muerte en el Cabañal’ (Death in Valencia), will be released. Is the digital age killing the traditional

format of books?

autonomous regions.

In our case, we have not been affected by the new technologies. In Spain, e-books account for only 8% of readership, so the e-book to date has not triumphed here. In our case, we often complement the paper book with the digital one, which we release a few months after the physical book.

In the not too distant future, we want to be recognized for taking risks by supporting those good local authors to whom the big publishers had not given a voice. Until now, they did not have the option to work with a publishing company that was already prepared to make a commitment to make them known throughout Spain with distribution and different promotional events.

What are your plans for the future?

Seeing the good reception that we have had in the Basque market, our plans are to continue our commitment to Valencia authors but we will also support the authors and continue the Basque theme and then gradually go into other

VALENCIA WINES & GINS

SUMMER DRINKING! VALENCIA WHITE WINES AND NEW GINS FOR SUMMER DRINKING! This month VÍ Vid recommend a selection of Valencia white wines and a pair of new Valencia gins. Bodega Vinya Natura is from Les Useres and produces some excellent wines and a cava. The ‘Baranc de l´Infern’ white is 60% chardonnay and 40% macabeo and has had no oak ageing. Pale lemon, clean and bright. On the nose clean and fresh, floral and in the mouth good acidity. Neither variety dominates, nicely balanced and with a long dry finish. A perfect match for seafood and salads. The 2016 vintage of Finca Collado’s (Salinas, DO Alicante) white wine with the chardonnay fermented in oak and a short crianza on the lees (three months), then blended with moscatel. Pale gold, clean and very bright with strong legs. On the nose, expressive with white flowers, aromatic, apricot, cream and vanilla from the oak. In the mouth, the initial acidity is balanced by tropical fruit flavours, pineapple, mango, lychee,

vanilla. The wine evolves well, releasing orange peel notes as well. Very long finish, round. Probably the best vintage to date. A perfect match with paella, fideuá and Indian food. Available from saboresdelavid.com. A pure ‘Sauvignon Blanc 2016’ from Bodegas Vegamar (DO Valencia), which is very characteristic of the variety. Harvested at night so that the grapes are less stressed, immediately de-stemmed and crushed, the ‘must’ is then kept at -30º before macerating with the skins at 10ºC before pressing. On the nose, grass, hay, elderflower. In the mouth crisp, clean, fresh with good acidity, long dry fruity finish. Perfect aperitif or with seafood. Available from Vegamar Selección, C/ Colón, 37. The Bodegas Vinados ‘Cent Piques Verdejo 2016’ (DO Valencia) comes from a 2 1/2-hectare plot of ecological vines, the handpicked grapes harvested at a slightly higher maturity than normal. Golden yellow colour with green flashes, clean and bright. On the nose, you immediately note the riper fruit, guava. It is not a typical crisp, fresh nose as, when tasted, it was still slightly closed as it was bottled recently. In the mouth, it is very fruity with excellent balancing acidity, round with a good volume that fills the mouth and maintains its presence. Long finish. Again, an aperitif or with shellfish. Available online from www.vinados.es

David Carbonell is the winemaker at Vins del Comtat (Cocentaina, DO Alicante) and is credited with being the pioneer who first brought and planted viognier grapes in Valencia. This is the first of two wines from this variety produced by him we recommend. This ‘2016 Joven’ wine is clean, very bright and quite yellow in colour. The nose is very expressive with rich peach fruit and hints of fruit stone. In the mouth, it is immediately full, rich, ripe fruit, then spicy as it warms up. It has a long deep finish, which is very satisfying. Same grape variety, same vintage but the second wine has been fermented in oak with a light toast. Viognier is a variety which is notoriously difficult to work with in barrel, despite its ripe fruit it is quite delicate. This spent just two months in oak. Like the ‘Joven’, this ‘2016 Tostado Lento’ has nice peach fruit on the nose but is actually a little lighter both in colour and depth. In the mouth, it is more refined; you note the oak but only in a complementary way, the wine being soft and elegant whereas the ‘Joven’ is quite gutsy by comparison. An interesting contrast in style. Both wines available from vinsdelcomtat.com. The Bodegas Vinados ‘Cent Piques 2016 Gewurztraminer’ (DO Valencia) is a more typical Mediterranean Gewurztraminer, golden, clear and bright with long legs reflecting its

twentyfoursevenvalencia 43

alcohol content. On the nose typically floral, rose petal, tropical fruit, spicy. In the mouth, good volume which grows in the mouth, round, fruit and spice are nicely integrated. Long elegant finish. Excellent with seafood rice dishes. In contrast, the Bodegas Barón d’Alba ‘2016 Gewurztraminer’ contains about 5% viognier, which has been aged in oak for a short period and adds to the elegance. Pale yellow clean and bright. On the nose, it has rose petal, honeysuckle, spice and a hint of vanilla. In the mouth, light on entry, then the spice emerges, rich, ripe fruit, full, apricot and apricot stone, it is a wine which evolves quickly in the mouth and well in glass. This is one of the best wines from this variety we have tasted here in Valencia and is available from Navarro Bodegueros on Av. Cardenal Benlloch, 100. For gin lovers, Vegamar have introduced two new gins to the premium market this month. You will love them, too!

Gin City London is a traditional ‘London Dry’ style, elegant, fresh, and citric, with a hint of the East and a touch of modernity which the citrus, mint and gin add to the base. It is a gin with 40 VOL and five separate distillations which supply a concentration of the elements to the purist. The main botanicals are juniper, cardamom, coriander, angelica, lemon and orange peel, peppermint and ginger. It is a refreshing drink, taken with tonic from which the citrus notes sing out without over-dominating. Gin City Valencia, by contrast is a smooth, elegant, aromatic, floral and fruity gin which has more volume and is a drink which could convert non-gin drinkers to the habit. Six distillations are necessary before this classic is bottled, something rare in the world of gins! During this process, the classic juniper and citrus elements together with the wine made from moscatel de Alejandría from the bodega’s vineyards in Calles, the scents of the mountain herbs and marcona almonds, also native and grown in the zone, meld together. This is what gives it a Mediterranean

style and a different, special character. Fragrant, delicate, with a long evolution in the glass. The botanicals used in this version are cardomom, angelica, lemon, orange,

sage,

pennyroyal,

thyme,

heliotrope,

chamomile, mint

and

verbena. Although offered with tonic at the presentation, this is a gin which is satisfying drunk on its own, where one can appreciate its smooth passage and individual elements. Both available (25€) from Vegamar Selección, C/ Colon, 37. This article was prepared by Marian Dáras and Riki Wigley of VÍ Vid. Further information from them is available at vividvinos@hotmail. com and you can follow their blog, http://vvidblog.wordpress.com or on Facebook (VÍ Vid), Twitter (@ Vividvinos) and Instagram (Vivid8702). Current articles are on ‘Paella de Cullera’ and a restaurant review in Puçol.
