SPUTNIK 1-Who are Sputnik? Sputnik is the key name of the cosmonaut Antonio J. Iglesias, appointed for a secret Jamaican space mission. There is an imaginary satellite that captures signals and filters & transmits them whilst continuing to orbit in space: A Jamaican dream. It is a solitary experiment but at the same time it is accompanied by a number of helping hands.

2-What are your influences? In my space laboratory you will find that there are a number of styles with Jamaican roots: reggae, roots, Jamaican ska, rocksteady, dub, Latin, dirty Reggae, basically. To this experiment I have added pop and ‘cosmic’ as influences. Names? The list is long. Mad Professor, Skatalites, Abyssinians, Linton Kwesi Johnson, Desmond Decker, Lee Perry, Gladiators, The Aggrolites, Ken Boothe, The Specials, Alton Ellis...and many more.

3-Can you explain the concept of your new album by Sputnik, ‘Jamaican Mistake’? Jamaican music and the majority of Black music has a freshness that wouldn’t work with a different production but fits just right with this project. There is an apparent precariousness to it but it is authentic and faithful to its vision. The border between getting things right and wrong is hazy just like time and space, which I find to be captivating as a place to explore. Here ideas coexist from years back and some are more recent. When I joined them together, I was justified as it gave coherence to apparently disparate parts. I took good advantage of the unified elements and sent them into space, in the same capsule. The risk of sending this satellite out into the universe is a Jamaican mistake…I am a Jamaican mistake.

4- Could you take us through each track? Of course, welcome aboard! Sputnik from Jamaica

It is the introduction to the album. It is an experiment in Digital Reggae with some recorded signals from orbiting in the universe during the space race.

Downtown Heat

This is choral singing with Jamaican ska as the base plus the magic of the dancefloor, which is a temple that humanity owes a lot to.

Artibella

This a classic by Ken Boothe that ‘Offbeaters’ (Great Valencian band now dissolved) made into dirty reggae and sang in Italian. The name and persona of Artibella has some element of Italian too.

The Model

With ‘Golden Singles’ i did this tribute to Kraftwerk with a roots base and guided by dub. I am passionate about decontextualizing things and I enjoyed carrying out these changes. Kraftwerk are wonderful and much nearer to Lee “Scratch” Perry than people realize.

Jump to the Moon

This is a ‘Lovers rock’ reggae number. A romantic cosmonaut’s invitation to jump! The cosmic choir floats over a ‘riddim’ by the great Don Ignatius.

Janie Jones

This is the Clash with a rocksteady rhythm. There is a piece included from the only Jamaican tribute to The Clash called “The Clash goes Jamaican”(Golden Singles records, 2013). The Jamaican influence on The Clash always merits a homage. Giving it another tempo and putting character into the chorus and that it all worked together was the real challenge.

Kingston Blues

A song about the different sides of the city, the rules of the barrios and the attitude. It is a tribute to the shanty towns, Trenchtown and Kingston itself. The cosmic choir is singing the blues about the city but with an uplifting vibe.

Lawrence de Arabia

I always saw the connection between the desert winds and the beaches of Jamaica in the soundtrack of this film. I recorded it a long time ago and it closes the album as an intriguing instrumental with roots, dub and a trip on an imaginary Arabian camel…

5- How do you find Valencia as a place to live, work and play regarding music? Being comfortable is a double-edged sword. Musically, Valencia is a difficult place to escape from the ghetto because of the virtual lack of a music industry and the attitude of certain people in a city with nearly a million inhabitants. However, there are people doing interesting things. Living from music is complicated here but the journey continues. HOLY GRAIL IN VALENCIA

King Arthur, Percival, Lancelot and the other knights of the round table, Siegfried the crusader, Adolf Hitler, the freemasons, Monty Python and Indiana Jones all spent huge amounts of time and energy in search of the Holy Grail and its magic powers. Only Percival and Indy actually got to see it and, even then, only briefly. If only they’d bothered to consult the website of the Holy Grail chapel inside Valencia Cathedral as published in this very magazine they could have saved themselves a lot of trouble. And now the local authorities want to make it even easier. With a view to attracting tourists to the city, there are proposals in making Valencia “the City of the Holy Grail” giving the “sacred vessel” a central role much the same as, say, the famous shroud in the Italian city of Turin. One rumour is that the Grail could be displayed in a floodlit glass case as a centre piece of the Cathedral with queues of pilgrims and tourists waiting to get that photo to post up on Facebook, which will certainly take away some of the mystique which has surrounded the Grail for more than 20 centuries. The cup on show in the pretty little chapel hidden away in the corner, on the right as you enter the Cathedral in Valencia is claimed by many believers to be the true holy vessel used at the Last Supper. But is there any evidence as regards its “authenticity”? Unlike many other so-called relics (most of them artfully created in the middle Ages) the cup does indeed date back to the first century (or more exactly any time between the second century

BC to the first Century AD) and tests have shown that it was probably made in Palestine. So, the time and place of origin are about right but what is it doing here housed just 20 yards away from where tourists are tucking into their overpriced paellas and Big Macs in the Plaza de la Reina? Legend tells us that Saint Peter took the Grail to Rome where it was used by the first twenty-three Popes (presumably for performing religious mass and not for a late night tipple or for keeping their toothbrushes in). When Pope Sixto II was martyred by the Romans, Saint Lawrence sent the holy chalice to his parents in Huesca (northern Spain) for safekeeping. Saint Lawrence was unable to bring the cup to Spain in person as he was otherwise engaged being martyred himself on a huge barbecue built by his Roman tormentors, which I suppose some might call the “Holy Grill” but that’s another story. The Grail stayed hidden in Huesca for the next 450 years, kept safe by a small group of believers, surviving religious persecutions, the fall of the Roman Empire, invasions from Goths and Visigoths and the pillage of Northern Spain by the gloriously named Childebert the Bastard, King of Paris. A lot can happen in 450 years and those weren’t easy times but things were about to get worse. In 711 the Moors invaded Spain occupying most of the territory in just eight years. Bishop Acisclo and his trusted

vicar Anderberto fled to the Pyrenees in search of a hiding place for the Grail but were caught by the Moor captain Muza and his men at the cave of Yebra. Bishop Acisclo was brutally murdered by the Moorish soldiers while his loyal servant Anderberto bravely ran away and hid in the cave managing to save the Grail, valiantly turning a deaf ear to his master’s desperate cries for help. Anderberto took the Grail to the San Pedro de Siresa monastery in Huesca where it was kept hidden for three centuries. An asymmetrical star still marks the spot where it was stored in a wall cavity behind the main altar. After passing some time at Jaca cathedral, documented evidence shows that it arrived at the monastery of San Juan de la Peña in 1071. You couldn’t imagine a more fitting place for the Grail to be hidden away. Perched on the steep rocky slopes of the Pyrenees, up in the clouds towering above the thick forest that surrounds it and inhabited by an order of warrior monks (the Cluny) with no contact with the outside world, it’s straight out of Arthurian legend. Forgotten for 250 years during the dark ages, in which time the mounting and handles (made by Muslim artists from Córdoba) were added, the Grail was finally recovered by King Martin I (the humane) and was kept under the protection by various other nickname loving Aragon monarchs until it was finally taken to Valencia when King Alfonso V (the magnanimous) moved his court to the city in 1427.

Valencia’s isn’t the only Holy Grail around the world. One, said to have been brought by Joseph of Arimethea, is kept at Glastonbury. Another is the Santo Catino, brought to Genoa Cathedral from Jerusalem by the Crusaders; it’s more of a dish than a cup really, (the holy ice cream boat, perhaps?). All of them date back to the correct period and place and are made from the same semi-precious stone, red agate. Valencian believers say that their cup is the true Grail but bizarrely accept the others as being part of the same dinner service used at the last supper. Which makes you wonder how the man who lent the disciples his house for their dinner felt when he came home to find all his crockery had been pilfered, not to mention his table which is in Saint John of the Cross church in Rome. We suppose he wasn’t too surprised when all his guests were arrested the next day. Since 1427, the cup has only left Valencia Cathedral on three occasions. In 1810, during the French invasion and the War of Independence. In 1936, when it was protected from the marauding Marxists for the duration of the civil war by the elderly spinster

In November 1982, for the open air mass given by Pope John Paul II in the Alameda and the last time in July 2006, when Pope Benedict XVI came to Valencia. In all this time it has only suffered one slight accident but with terrible consequences. At the Good Friday service of April 3 1774 Cannon Vicente Frigola slipped and dropped the Holy chalice, which broke into pieces on the floor. Ooops! As quick as a flash the Arch Bishop rushed through the horrified congregation and took the broken pieces in a gold box (Which he happened to have on him) to the chapel of relics only stopping to give an extremely stern glance in the direction of his subordinate. The Grail was repaired that same afternoon by the cathedral jewellers but the unfortunate butter-fingered priest; Father Frigola died that very night victim of a sudden, mysterious illness. One small piece of The Grail went missing its whereabouts are still a mystery, which might be good material for the next Dan Brown novel or perhaps a Hollywood blockbuster.

This has opened up a whole can of worms concerning the Grail’s ownership, claimed variously by the City council, the Catholic Church and the Spanish Crown. There has even been talks about gaining Unesco World Heritage status for the relic. Something which is somewhat unlikely, considering the strictly non-denominational nature of the organisation and the impossibility of demonstrating the Grail’s “authenticity”. The restored Grail is now there for all to see still (until Ms Barbera gets her way) largely ignored in its unassuming little chapel in the Cathedral, if you feel like paying it a visit, but make sure you get the opening times right or you’ll end up as disappointed as King Arthur, Sir Galahad and Indiana Jones. COUNTRY TREKKING VALENCIA REGION HIKING IN THE VALENCIA – 4 OF THE BEST

Do you fancy doing something other than watching football hungover or eating another paella this weekend? Hopefully, this article will coax you into heading out to the Valencian countryside, to fill your lungs with fresh air, get some exercise, and learn a little bit of history all at the same time!

La Peña Cortada (Calles/Chelva)

Ruta de los Puentes Colgantes (Chulilla) The first hike is around an hour away by car near the picturesque village of Chulilla; a town built on a steep hill overlooked by a Moorish castle. The lakes, valleys, and surrounding trails make this little gem of a pueblo a Mecca for climbers, walkers, and those just looking to relax surrounded by a little bit of nature. The recommended route, La Ruta de Los Puentes Colgantes (or The Route of the Hanging Bridges), is a circular route of 15-16 km that starts near the parking on the outskirts of the village. This easy-to-follow route carries you down to the valley floor via two wooden bridges (very safe, don’t worry!), onwards to the Loriguilla reservoir, before turning and passing through a forest trail back to Chulilla. Don’t forget to check out some prehistoric cave-paintings (pinturas rupestres) just before you reach the end! This walk shouldn’t present any difficulties to the fit and healthy, and there are plenty of beautiful spots to stop for a rest on the way! And what’s more, there is always the busy central square of Chulilla on the route home for a well-deserved cerveza! One for all the family. Wikiloc Code = 4549060

La Peña Cortada (Calles/Chelva)

The next recommendation is not to be missed; a circular route named La Peña Cortada of around 12 – 13 km starting and ending in the village of Calles and passing through the town of Chelva. A brisk uphill start out of Calles, representing the hardest part of the walk, leads to a magnificent hilltop cave. From here, the route carries onwards and downwards through a relaxing wooded trail that ends at an ancient Roman waterway chiseled of the rock face! This fun section leads to a chink in the rock wall, like something out of Middle Earth (!), and through to the breathtaking Roman aqueduct. This is nothing to be sniffed at: with 26 km of remains found, the importance of this aqueduct is on par with that of better-known aqueducts throughout Spain. This is an excellent chance for a rest and a bocadillo (or, as we did, some wild Boar sausage, Sierra de Albarracín cheese, and a cheeky bottle of red) before pressing on towards Chelva and another opportunity for a brief stop in the Plaza Mayor dominated by the imposing Parroquia Nuestra Señora De Los Ángeles. All that’s left is to exit Chelva and make your way over the river, not forgetting to look back for a majestic view, and head back to Calles, passing by the Vegamar bodega on the way!

Massif by name and massive by nature! For a slightly tougher walk, head down towards Denia and try this superb circular route of around 15-16 km. Starting from just outside Denia (best grab some breakfast here first!), you soon begin a breathtaking ascent on well-maintained walking trails through fields of multi-colored flowers to eventually reach the peak of Montgó (753m), one of the highest points of the Comunidad Valenciana. Not only can you see Ibiza on a clear day at the peak, but you will also encounter the ruins of an eighth century Iberian settlement! Following a brief stop to take all that in, you descend the other side of Montgó towards Javea before circumnavigating the base back to the starting point. However, even if your energy is sapped, don’t forget to visit the Cueva del Agua (another small uphill section unfortunately!) for a little welcome refreshment (try to ignore the graffiti) and the well-preserved Roman inscriptions near the very end!

Again, this is an easy walk, other than the brisk start, and can be attempted by most fit and healthy people (or even maybe the not so fit!). For those who prefer to cut to the chase, you can also drive straight to the aqueduct. Again, a family affair, but maybe not for the very young or very old. Wikiloc Code = 6818074

This walk is more difficult than the previously mentioned trails, but you can encounter entire families on their Sunday morning stroll in the vicinity, so fear not! Just remember some provisions, plenty of water, and a stout pair of walking boots. Keep this one until you’ve tested yourself in Chulilla and Calles! Wikiloc Code = 11467654

El Barranco del Infierno y La Catedral del Senderismo (Fleix) Have we saved the best for last? With names like La Catedral del Senderismo (The Cathedral of Hiking) and El Barranco del Infierno (The Ravine of Hell), you know you are in for a treat! But be warned, the route is also known as La Senda de los 6500 Escalones (The Path of the 6500 Steps), with each step cut out the rock by the Moriscos (nominally Christianized Muslims after Ferdinand and Isabella before their expulsion in 1609), the ancient inhabitants of this area! However, don’t be scared; this walk is highly rewarding and a sight to behold! The circular route of 13-14 km starts in the picturesque village of Fleix which sits atop the plateau looking down over the Alicante coastline; however, make sure your knees are in great shape as the uphill and downhill sections that you will encounter will definitely take your breath away! This walk may not be best suited for the very young or old, or those with knee problems!

El Barranco del Infierno (Flexix)

However, carrying plenty of water and a few snacks should see most people round this fantastic hike. One for the more experienced walker! Wikiloc Code = 10410174

Get out there and Hike! But I’ll get lost I hear you say! You won’t, I say! These walks are generally very well marked out with signs and hiking markers (usually green/yellow and white flashes on stones and walls and arrows pointing the way); but, for the well prepared or the unsure, there is also a mobile phone application you can download and use: Wikiloc. Using their online database (es.wikiloc.com and the codes provided above), it is simple to download a walk of your choice and follow it with ease on your mobile phone! Finally, a few reminders: take plenty of water (at least 2-3 liters each), sun tan lotion, your bocadillo of choice, and a good hat for some shade! Furthermore, please don’t try these walks in flip-flops or high heels; invest in a decent set of boots, or at the very least, wear some sturdy trainers with good support! Stay safe and have fun!

THE CITY OF ARTS AND SCIENCES IN 2017 So you think you know Valencia? Paella, Fallas, Sun, Sand, Football, Passion, Light and Love! All of these fiery elements make up a place that has become known as the Mediterranean city par excellence. Part of the charm lies in the contrast between the old centro historico and the newish City of Art and Sciences… Bringing together internationally renowned architects, research scientists and pioneers of the arts world, the ‘Ciudad de las Artes y las Ciencias’ has put Valencia on the international map. It has brought praise from ‘The Times’ in London and acclaim in Milan, Paris and New York. It is based on the Rio Turia Gardens and covers an area of 350.000 m 2. It has an estimated four million visitors each year. Broken up into five parts, each building has a distinctive identity and design:

L’HEMISFÈRIC This includes a Planetarium, IMAX cinema and Omniscan Laser. Designed by Santiago Calatrava (Valencia’s most famous architect) it evokes the image of a gigantic human eye. In stereophonic sound, on a huge screen of 900m2, there are continual audiovisual displays with stunning sound and images. Simultaneously presented in four languages, you just sit back and take it all in. With the latest astronomy and laser technology, it is great fun for younger enthusiasts as well the older visitor. The cinema dome has the shape, sound and images to give the impression that you are in the films being shown. It is quite an experience for the uninitiated. The aim is to entertain and display images that are not just the preserve of experts. It is also an educative centre for teachers and students with an interest in astronomy.

MUSEU DE LES CIÈNCIES “PRINCIPE FELIPE” This Science museum is a clear symbol of twenty first century values. It is open-minded to the latest technological advances, without forgetting the traditional aim of informing and bringing together the public from all walks of life. Biology, physics, sport, communications are all looked at in an original and entertaining way. There are three levels and a continual run of expositions, workshops and demonstrations. It combines the work of Nobel Prize winners as well as experimental and entertaining displays from the present. It invites the public to take part in the museum’s aims and therefore not just be bystanders. With internet facilities and scientific supervisors on hand, everyone can have a hand in a place that makes science fun as well as fascinating.

L’OCEANOGRÀFIC This oceanographic centre is the largest of its kind on the continent. Covering an area of 80.000 m2, it combines the biggest aquarium in Europe, an underwater restaurant (eat fish while larger ones swim past you), sea displays that range from the Arctic to the Tropical. It is home to 45, 000 animals of 500 different species. There is a 70m underwater glass tunnel that is available for visitors to be in close contact with sea creatures from all over the world. The educative and entertaining aspects of such a project enable the public and experts to take it all in a city that has always combined fire with water.

a special relationship with music. Sydney and Liverpool are two famous examples. Valencia has become another. Covering an area of 40.000 m2, it is has become an international centre for classical music and opera in the twenty first century. Indeed, Placido Domingo is a key part of the team. EL ARENAL DEL CARMEN DINING OUT IN THE HISTORIC CENTRE…

Set in an attractive and very spacious 19th century listed building, the newish ‘El Arenal del Carmen’ restaurant is now starting to slowly but surely take off as the holiday season seeps into view. Set on a mellow street in the historic centre, it’s just a stone’s throw from the La Lonja and near Plaza Negrito so not difficult to find… The interior is an attractive and original mix of ancient and modern, with very Mediterranean ceramic tiled floors giving a warm and rustic feel to the place. Combine this with the British Red Telephone box displaying classic Gins to go with your Tonics and you know you are in a restaurant that is welcome for English and Spanish speakers alike… For somewhere that can seat about 100 customers, there are still some interesting nooks and crannies and a sultry terrace out the back too. There is a fisherman cove vibe near the kitchen, with distressed brickwork and plenty

of paintings of fishing boats and nets, including one reminiscent of Valencia’s most famous painter, Sorolla. So, to the food. Our charming maître‘d was David, a young & genial host who really knows his cuisine and very much someone who knows how to put the customers at ease. We decided to let him choose some representative dishes for us to taste. We opted for a ‘Las Campanas de Navarro’ rosé wine on the terraza of this very warm Friday night. It was a superb recommendation, lots of body and character for a a Rosado and it lasted us the whole evening. For starters, we savoured some very fresh, chopped tomatoes known as ‘Tomate Valenciano’ to go with our artisanal ‘integral’ bread. This was a gentle introduction for the first proper dish of the night, which was a ‘Pulpo Gallega’. This was a very well-cooked Galician Octopus that was filling , crunchy and distinctive. It was prepared ‘Al Sarten’ (By Saucepan), which gives it a fluffy texture. We may add that one of the ‘24/7 Valencia’ team present has a Galician grandmother, so she was qualified to give this one a full thumbs up! Fresh from the Mercado Central, we savoured some very evenly-cooked anchovies, which are known in Spain as ‘Boquerones’. This was pleasant interlude to the following dish to share, which were fresh mussels famously

known as ‘Cloxinas Valencianas’. With a white wine, garlic and lemon sauce this was a surprisingly understated and subtle experience, a very well prepared dish and very agreeable. The grande finale was a ‘Dorado Al Horno’, which was a Gilthead Bream and David rightly labelled “La Envidia” of the house . Indeed, so attractive was the dish on view that the table opposite immediately inquired with the waiter and ordered the same! It was beautifully tender and tastily combined with the potatoes & tomatoes that accompanied this gentle and wonderfully presented dish. Our overall impression of the restaurant was of cuisine that is tasty but never over-powering. This is a restaurant run by people who care about their food and drink, in fine presentation, in quality ingredients and also the joy of savouring authentic Mediterranean cuisine in historic surroundings. To finish off the evening, we shared a sexy and filling ‘Tiramisu’ as well as a delightful cheesecake with queso ricotta, almonds and ice cream. It was a refreshing way to end a memorable night. We promised ourselves to invite any visiting relatives to ‘El Arenal del Carmen’ as somewhere authentic and enjoyable to dine out in Valencia. FOOD BY HELEN WESTWATER PUDDING OF MELLOW FRUITFULNESS

Although Britain is not well famed for its culinary heritage, it is generally accepted that we do have some fine desserts. So, this month, we indulge in puddings and ‘the proof of the pudding is in the eating’! A refrain which coincidentally originates from the translation of ‘Al freír de los huevos lo verá’ by Cervantes from Don Quijote de la Mancha. It means that you can only tell whether something is good by actually experiencing it! Puddings have long been a stalwart of British cuisine, although the term pudding could be derived from both French and German and referred to either meaty sausage or similar blooded-pud. These days, ‘pudding’ can refer equally to sweet and savoury. It is also a term for desserts in general and, probably for its form or shape, can describe someone who is a little on the porky side. However, fear not! The classic Summer Pudding from which our recipe is inspired was invented in health spas around the 1920s and saw itself as a step away from the more unhealthy buttered fatty pudding. Instead, this is a refreshing mix of raspberries, blackberries, blackcurrants and redcurrants, lightly cooked with sugar, pressed and chilled with fluffy, juice-soaked bread. As we move into Autumn, try our poetic ode to Autumn and John Keats, with our ‘pudding of mellow fruitfulness’, made with raspberries, red or purple plums and blackberries. You will need one large pudding dish (1.5ml)

METHOD First place the plums and the sugar in a heavy bottomed saucepan. Simmer gently until the juices start to run and the sugar dissolves. When the plums are tender…add the rest of the berries. Cook for about 5 minutes, until the berries start to burst but do not overcook into a stew. Remove from the heat and add the lemon juice. Taste for tartness. As with

most good desserts this should be a zingy-zangy taste bud roller coaster from sweet to tart. While the fruits are cooling, press the bread slices into the pudding basin. They need to fit tight so there are no gaps for our fruits to escape to. However, please don’t steam roll flatten or it will end up dense and soggy. Next, place the plum halves in the bottom of the bowl and pour the rest of the fruits and juices over them. Cover with 1 to 2 more slices of cut bread, pressing down lightly. Cover the basin with cling film. Put a small plate or sauce that just comes short of covering the bowl and weight down with something like a tin or diving weight. Place on a dish in the fridge overnight. When you are ready to serve, remove the outside wrappings (cling film, plate and weight). Loosen with a pallet knife and turn upside down onto a plate. Hey presto! Your perfect pudding… with any luck. But remember the proof of the pudding will be in the eating! Serve chilled with cream or Greek yogurt.

EXCITING TIMES FOR THE CITY With both Levante UD and Valencia CF once again in the top tier of Spanish football, these are exciting times for the city of Valencia on the sporting front. Levante have celebrated their return to La Liga with a fantastic promotional offer for fans. Anyone buying a season ticket this year will receive a free one next year if they attend all league games and the club stays in LaLiga Santander. This deal has swelled the number of socios dramatically at the Estadi Ciutat de València. Their support has been instrumental in helping the club secure four points from their opening two league games at home to Villarreal and Deportivo de La Coruña, respectively. Meanwhile, over at the Mestalla, there has been a massive transformation of playing staff during the summer months. The new manager Marcelino has started well with a successful pre-season that included wins at Bournemouth and Werder Bremen. The only defeat in the build up to the new campaign was in the Trofeo Naranja against Atalanta of Italy. New signings during the summer that arrived in time for the opening league game against Las Palmas included Juventus reserve goalkeeper Neto and the Serbian youngster

ROSADOS FOR SUMMER DRINKING Summer in Spain (and especially here in Valencia) requires a bit of thought when it comes to matching wines with food. This is particularly the case when it comes to drinking red wines. This is because the red wines here are high in alcohol, at their best at normal room temperature and from June to September the ambient temperature is way above this! This affects the wines badly and they do not show at their best….chilling is no answer either as the drinker will lose much of the character of the wine. VÍ Vid do not drink red wines generally during these months other than at formal tastings. We recommend that you consider rose wines know in Spain as Rosados (especially Valencian Rosados) during this period. It is interesting to note that the Valencians themselves are now beginning to see the values of these wines which for years were considered ‘dirty wines’, white blended with red. But this is not the case. They are wines made from red grapes but the juice has a limited time in contact with the skins so that they produce a range of colour from pale salmon pink

to strawberry red. Coming from red grapes, they have the body of a red wine but have the acidity of whites.

2. Merlot 2016, Bodegas Vegamar, DO Valencia, 12.5% ABV

In our experience this makes them capable of matching any Valencian food from salads to the richest of seafood dishes and paellas, jamon, ibericos etc.

1. Rosado, Cabernet Sauvignon 2016, Bodegas Subarra, Castellon,13%ABV. Made at Bodegas Garcia Mayo in Vilafames by Jose Guillamon, this Rosado is from Cabernet Sauvignon. Pale strawberry colour, clean and bright. It has an intense fruity nose with hints of ripe grapes and red summer fruits. Fresh, dry, meaty on entry, with a balancing acidity and a long finish with lively fruit and good volume.

3. Bodega Finca Collado Rosado 2016, Merlot/Monastrell, DO Alicante, 13% ABV. This vintage has 15% Monastrell in a blend. The Merlot as usual is pressed immediately to avoid too much colour but the Monastrell is free-run juice from the beginning of the maceration process, which is then fermented in oak with regular batonnage over 2 months. Bright, strawberry pink, clean. Nice light raspberry fruit, boiled sweets, and raspberry and

strawberry fruit in the mouth, well-balanced acidity with a mineral, slightly salty finish. Seductive. Recently matched with a cod and tomato salad, salmon mousse and paella. 4. Terreta Rosado 2016 Monastrell, Edición Especial, BOCOPA, 13%ABV DO Alicante. From the Petrer bodega and vineyards in the Vinapólo around Sax and Salinas. Darker in colour, ripe strawberry, clean and bright. On the nose ripe, red fruit, redcurrant and raspberry. Evolves in the glass. In the mouth, intense on entry, slightly sweet with mature red summer fruits, well balanced with a long intense finish, again with a hint of the minerals in the soils. This is perfect with Bollo de Requena and Clotxinas and spicy chicken wings as well as paellas and seafood dishes. Available from the On-line shop)

5. Rosado 2016, Bodega Clos d’esgarracordes, IGP Castellon 13% ABV. This is the new vintage of this Rosado, the blend of which changes from one year to another. This year it is a blend of just Monastrell with Garnacha. Sergio and Mario (owner and winemaker respectively) have opted for the modern pale salmon pink colour after a couple of vintages of darker wines. Clean and bright. On the nose red fruits, intense, floral. In the mouth, good

A darker deeper, ripe strawberry colour with good legs. Classic Bobal nose, raspberry, strawberry and bubble gum, this is nonetheless a more refined and elegant wine. In the mouth ‘chupachup’, strawberry and cream, with a long creamy finish. (Available on-line from the Bodega)

This is an old favourite in our tasting group from this bodega in Venta del Moro. The new vintage is a midrange, rose and strawberry colour with good legs. Intense mature fruit on the nose, typically Bobal nose with strawberry and raspberry and bubble gum. Fresh on entry, balanced with good volume, red fruit flavours and citric notes and a long finish. 7. Al Vent 2016 Rosado, Bobal Coviñas DO Utiel-Requena 12.5%ABV. This 2016 is bright rose red, lively with violet tones and brilliant appearance. Café Museu Set in a mellow corner of the historic centre, ‘Café Museu’ can rightfully claim to have a worthy history all of its own. As one of the first bohemian bars of the Barrio del Carmen, it was founded in 1972 as ‘Raco.’ It was a favourite haunt of the local Art students whose college then overlooked the café bar. Loyal to their hangout, some of these ‘artistas’ still make time to meet here and gently continue putting the world to rights… In the year 2000, Raco became ‘Café Museu’ and the impressive terraza faces the Fine Arts Museum ‘Centre del Carme’ which has monthly exhibitions featuring local, national and international artists from the past and present.
