Thankfully, the temperatures are more pleasant and the new season is beginning to buzz as people have more time to meet up and go out after such a sweltering hot summer… For those of you who tend to get a touch melancholy with the change of season, Helen Westwater has a ‘Ohio Pumpkin Soup’ recipe to blow away the autumnal blues. We also visit the highly popular and good value ‘Kaña Makan’ for Mediterranean tapas with Middle Eastern influences. SOLEDAD VELEZ 1. Can you tell something about your background and musical influences?

I’m always listening to so much music and it has always been like that for as long as I can remember. It’s difficult for me to talk specifically about bands or solo artists. I don’t think I have been influenced by any specific artist but I have been inspired by thousands of songs, or seconds of them, that have changed my life in some way. 2. How do you find Valencia as a place to live and work as a musician? I am very comfortable in Valencia but it is true that the majority of what’s going on in this country tends to be in the capital or Barcelona on a musical level. However, by having my record label in Madrid it helps maintain that connection to the centre of things. The key is to never stop touring. 3. Can you take us through each track of your latest album, ‘Dance and Hunt’ ? Jeanette Jeanette is an emotional state, a broken heart. Knife This song is a trance, which evokes a force to remove obstacles with a knife.

Asteroid It’s a reflection on defeat and how it makes us feel…it’s where rage festers and it is what prepares us for the adversities to come. Dance and Hunt It’s a dance of provocation to evoke the other side of who we are. Nightmare I reckon that this is my favourite song on the whole album, it is a love song. It’s about loving someone that you cannot abide, it’s a nightmare but you still don’t want to wake up… You have no choice with me There’s not much to be said about this, it comes from anger, told in different ways. Thunderstorm It’s another song about heartbreak where you say to the other person that one day they will be full of regret because you will never ever return to be by their side.

The Cave The cave is an emotional state, an interior state of feeling that attracts you and separates you from everything. Dune Dune is symbolic of a specific person who was by my side in a difficult moment in my life. 4. What are your musical plans for the future? Well, I have quite a few live shows lined up. I will also be doing some concerts in homage of Violeta Parra. I also have a new album out quite soon, which is in Spanish, so I’m feeling really optimistic! SAN NICOLAS CHURCH

BAROQUE TREASURES IN THE HEART OF THE CARMEN Hidden at the end of a little passageway marked “Parroquia de San Nicolás”, about halfway down C/ Caballeros amongst the ‘tourist trap’ bars and ‘authentic’ bodegas, is one of the city’s greatest art treasures. The dazzling Baroque frescoes at the Church of San Nicolás have recently been restored to their former glory and are now open to the public. This was the Borgias’ local church, their Valencia residence was just down the street, and Lucrezia and family had many strong connections with the place. The original church was built in 1238, one of 12 churches in the city built on the site of Muslim mosques, under the orders of the conquering King Jaume I, to show who was now

in charge after he’d retaken the city from the Moors. The church was in a prime location. A palace in C/ Caballeros was a must for any self-respecting medieval Valencian noble family. It followed the old Roman Decumanus Maximus road from east to west across the ancient Roman city. Like in the present day Barrio del Carmen, it was the only wide, straight avenue amongst the surrounding winding maze of streets of the Moorish city. The Borgia family had two houses along the street, which are still standing at number 36 and number 33. This is where Lucrezia, the ‘femme fatale’ of the Borgia family, lived. They also had a little place off C/ Navellos, which is big and grand enough to now house the Valencia parliament. Alfonso de Borgia, the first Borgia pope (Calixtus III), was baptised here by Valencia’s patron saint Vicente Ferrer. After the ceremony, San Vicente, never one to shy away from finding favour with

Valencia’s aristocratic families, made a ‘miraculous prediction’. Perhaps it was one of the heaviest hints in history, predicting that: “This boy will be Pope and he’ll make me a saint”. He obviously knew a thing or two, as Alfonso eventually became Pope and fast-tracked fellow Valencian Vicente to sainthood in 1455, just a few decades after his death. Before he went to Rome, Alfonso became rector at San Nicolás and rebuilt the church in Gothic style. San Nicolás Church benefitted greatly from its connection with the family. Rodrigo Borgia (later Pope Alexander VI) was a protector and patron of the church as were his infamous children Lucrezia and Cesare, who made frequent lavish donations to the parish throughout their turbulent lives. The frescoes now on show date back to the 1690s, when it was decided that the old Gothic church would be refurbished in then fashionable Baroque style. In response to the Protestant Reformation, the Catholic Church seemed in danger of

being seen to be out of touch. The Church decided it needed to get closer to its audience and hit upon baroque art, with its exciting motion and theatrical tension and its clear & easily interpreted detail as the ideal way of putting its message across to Joe Public. The style quickly spread from Italy across Europe and the decoration of the church of San Nicolás is one of the best examples in Spain. It’s not to everyone’s taste, if you like the cold, simple stone of a Gothic church, you are in for a shock. Part of the attraction of baroque was that it impressed the power of the church on normal folk by making churches look like the lavish palaces of the aristocracy. It’s brash, dramatic, shiny and over-the-top. The frescoes were designed by Antonio Palomino, Carlos II’s court painter (who also did the inside of the dome of the Basílica in the Plaza de la Virgén), and carried out by the Valencian baroque painter Dionís Vidal. Once you’ve paid your two euros en-

trance fee (you can also pay extra for a guided tour) and shown your ticket to a small army of staff …a breathtaking blaze of colour and expertly crafted, detailed images jump out at you from all angles. The frescoes almost completely cover the walls and high ceiling vaults (they must have had very long paint brushes in those days). The pictures are extremely figurative and dramatic interpretations of Biblical stories, allegories, architectural drawings and scenes from the life and miracles of San Nicolás. This was Saint Nick’s early period, before the red suit and the reindeer, but he can be clearly seen in his fulsome bushy beard, not unlike a modern day hipster craft beer pub barman, performing his saintly good deeds. There are also portraits of the artists and, of course, Alfonso Borgia himself. We are told in the blurb that San Nicolás is one of the best examples of baroque art merging perfectly with the previous Gothic style, one not overpowering the other, but for

some tastes (including ours) it can seem a bit overdone and slightly disorientating. Nevertheless, you can’t deny the sheer beauty, drama , amazing detail and the historical importance of the frescoes. And all this on your doorstep just a hop and skip away from the kebab shops and stag parties along the old C/ Caballeros. David Rhead and José Marín

LA LONJA DE VALENCIA

LThe United Nations agency UNESCO has designated 851 sites around the world as World Heritage sites, which form part of the “cultural and natural heritage of the world” and are considered as having unique and universal value to the history of humanity. One of those sites is in Valencia and, you may be surprised to learn, it’s not Levante’s Ciudad de Valencia Stadium. While the Miguelete is a century older and the Albufera is more naturally beautiful, La Lonja in Plaza Mercado outshines them all. Unlike any other city in the world, the outstanding Gothic building in Valencia is not its cathedral but a non-religious civic monument to commerce. Before it was built in the late fifteenth century, all major buildings and institutions in the city were owned and run by the church. Breaking with this tradition, La Lonja was a physical representation of a shift in power during Valencia’s Golden Age from the cardinals to the carpet traders, the bishops to the bankers. Here was a monumental building not built to the glory of God, but to the power of the Valencian economy as a trader in the Mediterranean market. Anyone who’s had their bathroom refitted in Valencia will know how things work round here. After endless negotiations the buil-

ders finally arrive, they make a superficial start to proceedings and destroy your old bathroom and then you don’t see them again for weeks. They then come and do most of the work but never quite finish. There’s always a tap or a tile missing or the door doesn’t quite fit. This is a long held and respected Valencian tradition (see what happened with the Grand Prix Formula 1 here) and the building of La Lonja was no different. The first stone was laid in November 1482 but work didn’t really start until a year later. Once they got going it was more or less built in 15 years (pretty good going for the fifteenth century) although it took another fifty years before it was completely finished. You can read all this on an inscription above the back doorway in Plaza Doctor Collado, giving exact details about the different stages of the building’s construction. Although not a religious building, La Lonja certainly has sacred pretensions as a “temple” of commerce with many spiritual and biblical symbols on show. There are religious icons and gargoyles all around its façade. If you’re into this sort of thing, look out for the little man having a dump above one of the basement floor windows. The

design of the building followed an initiatic code, a sort of medieval Feng Shui, where everything, down to the exact number of columns and the distance between them, was all calculated to give the maximum spiritual harmony to the merchants working there. There are three parts to the building. The largest part is the Sala de Contratación or the trading floor with its 24 columns twisting up 17 metres, until they open up like palm trees on the ceiling which was painted blue and decorated with stars to imitate the Valencian night sky. Back in Valencia’s golden age this was a bustling hive of activity, its modern equivalent would be the great stock markets of today. When the City granted merchants official status as “Mercaders de La Lonja”, they were given a table to deal from and a red velvet cloth with which to cover it. Along with the buying and selling of exotic products from all over the known world, mortgages and loans were also arranged here. Officially, Christians were not allowed to charge interest, hence the importance of Jews as money lenders, but the merchants of the time soon found ways around this. Running along the walls of the room is an inscription reminding the merchants where they were and calling them to honour their

surroundings and to trade honestly and fairly. Those failing to do this (well, those who fell foul of the city leaders anyway) were sent to the dark cellars of the Tower, which rises up through the roof of the building. The merchants were given six months to settle their debts or pay back what they had been judged to have cheated (not that easy when you’re trapped in a rat-infested dungeon). If they did not comply, they were taken to the chapel at the top of the Tower. On their way up they probably, given the circumstances, neglected to admire the unique stone staircase ingeniously built without a central column. After making their peace with their maker, they were taken to their own table on the trading floor and beheaded in front of their fellow merchants. The city then took back its cloth and gave the table to someone else. Now that’s what I’d call zero tolerance to white collar crime. The Consulat del Mar or maritime consulate is accessed through the garden at the back of the building. This was luxury office space (the ceilings are decorated with gold leaf and fine wood carvings) for the trade delegations which were maintained by all the major trading cities of the Mediterranean in the fifteenth century, with representatives from as far afield as Damascus, Rome, Venice, Egypt, Beirut and many others.

On the exterior wall is one of the mysteries of La Lonja. The wall is decorated with a series of forty medals bearing men’s faces but historians can’t make up their minds who they are supposed to be. Are they Roman Emperors? Aragon kings? Leading merchants? Famous paella chefs? Ali Baba’s forty thieves? We’ll probably never know. After the discovery of America, Spain’s Mediterranean ports started gradually to decline as importance shifted to the Atlantic coast. Valencia’s Golden Age was coming to an end, as was the heyday of La Lonja. It remained an important part of the Valencian economy as the city’s silk exchange until the nineteenth century, when oranges and rice replaced silk as the region’s principal export. During the civil war, La Lonja was briefly to recapture its former glories when it was used to house the Spanish parliament while Valencia was capital of the Republic. So, in the twenty-first century, what do you do with a wholly exceptional example of a secular building in late Gothic style, which dramatically illustrates the power and wealth of one of the great Mediterranean mercantile cities? Well, that’s a problem that successive Valencian governments have

consistently failed to find a solution to. It has been used for parties, royal weddings, as an exhibition centre and a museum. Since its designation as a World Heritage site, La Lonja has become a bit of a museum piece in itself and is considered to be too precious for such trivial uses. Even the annual exhibition of Fallas figures has been moved to a local shopping centre. While the Cathedral still serves the purpose for which it was built and the Mercado Central across the road bristles with the very lifeblood of the city, La Lonja can often be experienced as a fascinating respite from all the crowds… David Rhead and José Marín More info at: www.lonjadevalencia. com/of Fallas. MEDITERRANEAN TAPAS BAR

KAÑA MAKAN On a warm, autumnal evening a couple of the ‘24/7 Valencia’ team headed to the legendary and somewhat bohemian ‘Plaza Cedro’ area of the city, which is most popular with locals and students for its endless bars and restaurants, clubs and live music venues. Near Blasco Ibañez, this is an authentic slice of Valencian nightlife and well away from all the tourist traps of the historic centre. ‘Kaña Makan’ is a great value tapas bar and this was reflected by the nearly full terraza the night we went, which seats 60 people. It’s a mostly Spanish and liberal crowd and they tell us that they tend to attract more tourists in the hotter months. Of course, it is welcome to all. We opted for the more intimate indoors, with its reddish and orangey low-lighting, making it great for couples as well as a seductive & dreamy music soundtrack. This ranged from Trip-Hop to mellow Dire Straits to moody Radiohead, Arabic strings with American beats & European melodies sung by a smoky chanteuse. Indeed, you will plenty of Syrian & Middle Eastern influences here with their tapas like Falafel and Sfiha. Va-

lencia’s Mediterranean history is rich with influences and Kaña Makan’s popularity reflects this diversity. Our genial, bilingual & charming host Iyad handed us their easy-to-understand ‘pocket-menu’ with boxes to tick. For starters we opted for a ‘De Queso’ (Cheese) Salad, which was very fresh and lovingly presented. The cherry tomatoes combined well with the green shoots and ‘Granada’ topping. The thin strips of ‘curado’ cheese had a memorably thick taste! The most popular section of the menu is the finger food choice of tapas ‘para picar’, which is incredibly good value at just 1.50€ each. We opted for what turned out to be a wonderful ‘Sujuk’ which combined a smooth pastry with a spicy, filling meat with manchego cheese, tomato with a touch of garlic…all in a ‘masa fina’. Indeed, this tapas is so successful it can be found in the Middle East, the Balkans and even Asia.

Next on the menu was the recommended ‘Tortilla Kañamakan’ which had a distinctive flavor. It was ovencooked and the vegetables & olive oil combined well with the tomato, mayonnaise and tasty bread, which was a solid choice. All of the tapas dishes were presented together on an attractive round plate… . Suffice to say, the ‘Hummus’ choice was special and had a great flavor that combined chickpeas with a sesame purée and olive oil. One of the dippings we most enjoyed with our bread was the ‘Baba Ganug’, which was an oven-cooked eggplant ‘berenjena’ sauce with Greek Yoghurt and a sesame ‘salsa’. As a special ‘montadito of the day’ surprise by the chef, we enjoyed a superb spinach in pastry with very full flavours. To finish our memorable and exotic ‘Mediterranean Tapas’ trip, we opted for a ‘Baklaua’ dessert. Baklava

(in English) is thought to have been created by the Assyrians in the 8th century and perfected during the time of the Otterman Empire. Not surprisingly, part of its appeal is said to be the aphrodisiacal combination of dried fruits with honey combining with its delicate and crafted puff pastry. It was a relaxing and gentle way to end the evening’s dining, which made for an enriching experience overall given the culinary choice of tapas. We thank the staff of Iyad, Vanessa and Elena for their informative and helpful welcome during our time here. CELEBRATES ITS 30th ANNIVERSARY!… 30 years ago brothers Toni and Javi arrived at La Bodega Valero, a traditional bodega that sold wine and beers and was popular with the locals. They soon started to add their own personal touch to the bodega and installed a small kitchen, seating inside and a terraza outside too. There’s definitely a family feel to the place… Over the years, Bodega Valero has become a hit with the locals of the attractive and mellow ‘Juan Llorens’ barrio and attracts people of all ages from around town. It would be fair to say that it draws a bohemian crowd where everyone is an equal. This makes for an authentic yet alternative Spanish bodega that is down-to-earth, informal, spontaneous and tolerant too. The warm interior has wine barrels behind the bar and a wall with dozens & dozens of photos of all the good times that have been had by the owners and varied clientele over the years. Adorning the bar’s muros are a healthy mish-mash of rebellious & alternative causes in poster and painting form as well as photographs of the bands that have played here. Indeed, they have regular acoustic live shows featuring local underground artists. After all this time, it is still undiscovered by tourists but it is welcome to all. Back in 1995, this writer’s first years in Valencia were spent teaching English in a language academy across the road from the Bodega Valero and this member of the ‘24/7 Valencia’ team has been coming down to the Bodega ever since. Joining in the wild and joyful 30th anniversary with tapas, wine, beer & sangria aplenty throughout the day until the early hours of the morning was a lot of fun! The live show with Valencian music played on traditio-

nal instruments dolçaina (a reed instrument) & tabalet (percussion) with the Bodega crowd heartily singing along was really memorable and typical of the open vibe here. The music soundtrack is varied with rock’n’roll, blues, hard rock, punk, reggae, pop and electronic music among the many sounds to be heard seeping out onto the terrace. Indoors, they always have a rotation of classic films and live music concerts on the DVD player too. The last time we went the evening began with energetic Spanish 80s underground pop-rock and, as the clock turned to midnight, 60s Spani-

sh rock’n’roll was seeping out of the speakers as the Rocky Horror Show film was silently being screened. There is a good range of 17 mostly red wines to choose from, including Rioja and Ribera del Duero and this includes 4 white wines (like Ribeiro & Turbio Gallego) and a Rosado too. On the tapas front, our favourite is their speciality of Pechuga en Salsa (a mildy spicy chicken with mushrooms, tomato, onion and herbs). You can also savour their Sepia Plancha (grilled cuttlefish) and Tortilla de Patatas o de Verdura (Potato or Vegetable Tortilla).

They do a tasty Falafel with lettuce, tomato and yoghurt sauce. We’ve always enjoyed their Spanish Ham and Cheese tapas over a Spanish beer including Alhambra and Amber. Their Anchoas (Anchovies) and Albondigas (Meatballs) are homemade. Check out their nicely salted and well-presented Ensalada Rusa (Russian Salad) as a starter on their relaxing terrace. Also worth trying is their Basque tapas Txistorra a la Sidra, which is a combination of sausage and egg in cider. Many of these dishes are available as bocatas (generous sandwiches including lamb & pork choices) too. With nearly 20 tapas to choose from, Bodega Valero is open for breakfast/lunch/dinner everyday with a reasonably priced menu del dia during the week. On a mellow Tuesday evening, the last time we sat out on the tree-lined terrace for tapas, we savoured a refreshing Russian salad, a tasty chicken in sauce and a filling grilled cuttlefish. We sampled a good range of their red wines by the glass, which could partly explain why the evening got merrier by the hour. Going back inside to enjoy the cosy interior, we tipsily shared a naughty Tirasimu to finish off the night. It made for an interesting contrast as we digested

with a civillised manzanilla (camomile) tea with the stereo playing ‘Pretty Vacant’ by The Sex Pistols… Set in the very pleasant Juan Llorens district, it is under 10 minutes walk from the centro historico and just a stone’s throw from the main avenue of Gran Via Fernando El Catolico. After the long hot Summer, hurrah, hurrah Autumn is here! Chinese medicine-wise this is a season associated with the lung and intestine organs, which brings a need to eat warming foods that draw us inwards to prepare for winter. Akin to settling round a wood fire, autumn foods of the season such as ginger, pineapple and squashes all have inherent warming colours, a soothing quality or pungentness that will help to ward off chills and sadness associated with this season. Of course, there is no other food more associated with Halloween, than pumpkin. So, this month we stir in our cauldron, a spicy warming recipe of pumpkin soup, served with cumin and fried chickpeas. .. Method Heat oven to 180C. Place cut pumpkin wedges and the red pepper halves on a greased oven tray, sprinkle with olive oil, salt and rosemary. Place in the oven. After 10 to 15 minutes check the pepper and remove when cooked. Place in a plastic bag while still hot, so you can easily remove the skins. The pumpkin will take about 30 to 45 minutes to cook and soften. When you remove it from the oven you can easily remove the skin. Chop the stalks of the coriander. Reserve the leaves for decoration. Gently heat a large, heavy bottomed saucepan with the 2 tablespoons of olive oil. Do not overheat. When bubbles start to form, when touched with a stirring spoon, add your prepared ginger and garlic. Cook gent-

ly just so they soften (remove from heat if necessary) then add the chopped red pepper and the dried spices. Next, add your prepared pumpkin flesh, stir briefly and add the boiling vegetable or chicken stock. Simmer gently for 30 minutes, adding more water if necessary. Add seasonings to taste. Blend until the soup is smooth. When you are ready to serve, heat a small frying pan with 1 tablespoon of olive oil. Gently fry the red onion slices. When softened and cooked, reserve to one side. Next, add to the frying pan the cumin seeds and sea salt. Turn up the heat and add the drained chickpeas. Shake the pan as the chickpeas start to sizzle. Remove from the heat, stir in the onions. Serve the soup in bowls and place a mix of chickpeas and the red onion on top, sprinkled with coriander leaves. So, keep your energies up for a month of activities ahead this October, starting with the not-to-be-missed, ‘Benimaclet Confusion Festival’, 7th and 8th, Valencia Day on the 9th, plus on 31st La Ola Fresca will be celebrating its’ 7th anniversary with a special Halloween party, aided and abetted by French Bluegrass band, ‘Ohio Sunshine’

VALENCIA CONTINUE TO IMPRESS Despite having two of their first three games against the two Madrid giants, Real and Atlético, Valencia remain unbeaten in the league after seven games, and continue to impress the watching public with their vibrant brand of football. After an opening day victory against Las Palmas, Los Che had three consecutive draws. The point in the Santiago Bernabéu against Real Madrid was followed by another point at home to Atlético. Next up came the eagerly anticipated Valencia derby with both clubs at that point unbeaten. Le-

vante UD, at the time, had the same points as Valencia and went into the match full of confidence. The Valencia coach Marcelino sprung a surprise by leaving the Italian forward Simone Zaza on the bench whilst Levante had Morales suspended as a result of his sending off in the previous home game against Real Club Deportivo de La Coruña. Both teams started brightly but it was the visitors who took the lead through a Rodrigo header on the half hour mark. Carlos Soler should have added a second when he was the first to react to a Santi Mimi effort that hit the bar but his header was miraculously clawed away to safety by the Levante goalkeeper Raul Fernandez. Levante made Valencia pay for some sloppy first half-finishing when Enis Bardhi equalised just before the interval. The little Ma-

cedonian, signed from the Hungarian club Újpest Football Club in the summer, has already become a firm favourite with the ‘Granota’ fans. This was further enhanced when his right foot shot from just inside the area gave Neto no chance. The second half saw several chances go begging for both sides and a draw was a fair result that left both teams side by side in the La Liga table, with six points each from four games. Valencia then had a home game with Málaga. The team from the South were pointless at the time and they looked a poor outfit as the hosts thumped los boquerones by five goals without reply. During the week prior to the game, Zaza had expressed his displeasure at being dropped for the

local derby and this had been further fueled by comments made by his model girlfriend Chiari Biasi. She left a cryptic message on her Instagram account that roughly translated as... “If you want people with character, you must know how to manage them, above all you must find your balls and not leave them in a drawer for any reason.” Marcelino is known for his no-nonsense approach and many fans feared that Zaza would suffer the same fate as Fabian Orellana in being frozen out of the first team picture. Thankfully, the spat seems to have been resolved and Zaza responded in the best way possible by bagging a hat-trick for his team. Santi Mina and Rodrigo scored either side of Zaza’s three goals to leave Malaga firmly rooted at the foot of La Liga. A difficult trip to the Basque region and Real Sociedad followed for Valencia. Marcelino again tinkered with the team, replacing Neto with Jaume in goal. Neto had been in outstanding form, but once again it showed the coach has the strength of character to make big decisions, and that every single position in the team is competitive, with no players name guaranteed on the team sheet week in week out. The game itself was a pulsating affair. Rodrigo and Nacho Vidal twice put the visitors into the lead but Sociedad levelled almost immediately after both Valencia goals. The game looked to be heading for a draw when a speedy breakaway by Goncalo Guedes had the Sociedad defence struggling. As he headed into the penalty area he flicked the ball back with the outside of his right foot to

the oncoming Zaza, who in turn, placed the ball carefully into the back of the net with his left foot. Another Basque challenge faced Valencia the following week as Athletic Bilbao came to town. Having lost three days before to FC Zorya Luhansk of the Ukraine in the Europa League, they did not come to the Mestalla in the best of form. They were also missing their play maker Iker Munian. The Pamplona born youngster, who was once dubbed the “Spanish Messi” had suffered another sickening leg injury in the game against Zorya and could face up to eight months on the sidelines. Marcelino also tinkered, recalling Neto in goal whilst the Bilbao coach Jose Angel Ziganda decided to name the former Valencia favourite Aritz Aduriz on the bench. Valencia once again started brightly and it was no surprise when Zaza put the hosts one up with another goal from a cut-back, this time supplied by Gaya. Los Che were two goals to the good after just thirty minutes when Parejo slotted home a penalty after Rodrigo had been taken out by the Bilbao Kepa when chasing on to a headed flick on from Zaza.

Going into the break with a two goal lead, the Valencia fans were confident of another three points. However, Aduriz had different ideas. Entering the fray at the start of the second half, he had halved Valencia’s lead within 15 minutes. In recent seasons matches like these have ended with the opponents taking points in these types of games. Under Marcelino, the team have stopped this occurring this season. Valencia’s attacking approach paid dividends once again when Rodrigo extended the home side’s lead, just beating Kepa to a long ball, to head into an empty net. The Brazilian born Spaniard has been a revelation this season. His form has resulted in a call up for the Spanish national side for their World Cup Qualifier against Albania in Alicante and their away trip to Israel during the forthcoming international break. When he was substituted he was given a standing ovation by the crowd. Last year, he was regularly getting a chorus of boos in a similar situation. Like Parejo, he more than most has benefitted from Marcelino’s style of management. He could well be, along with Zaza, the player that guarantees the club at least 20 goals a season. Athletic did pull another goal back with 15 minutes to go but there were no slip ups this time and another three points were added to the La Liga bank. Rodrigo, Guedes, Maskimović, Carlos Soler and Lato will all be on international duty for their respective Senior and Under 21 countries when the World Cup Qualifiers take place the second week in October. Then comes the City of Seville test for Los Che, an away trip to Betis followed by an home game with Sevilla. Levante UD, meanwhile, have dipped in form recently. A walloping at Betis was followed by a subpar performance at home to Alavés. The struggling Basque side won 2-0, thanks to goals from former Valencia favourites Munir and Medrán. Finally, both teams now know their first opponents in this year’s Copa Del Rey. Valencia will play their two-legged matches against Real Zaragoza, whilst Levante UD have drawn fellow La Liga side Girona. John Howden

WINES MADE WITH TERRACOTTA

We are all accustomed to reading articles on wine in which the discussion and description about the elaboration process is centred on temperature control in stainless steel tanks, the use of commercial yeasts to enhance the bouquet and the amount of time the wine spends in oak, French, American or Eastern European. All of these issues are important because they affect the final product in your glass and how you drink them. However, until the coming of the railways to the interior of Valencia and with it the creation of cooperatives making wine in ceramic or concrete tanks wine was made in a very different way! Indeed, winemaking in Valencia was largely unchanged from six centuries before Christ until the beginning of the 19th Century. In Valencia, and indeed on much of

the Iberian Peninsular it all started with the coming of the Phoenicians and later the Romans. From their bases around Gandia they followed the rivers and tracks across what is now Spain. The oldest bodega of ‘commercial status’ was discovered in the wine-growing district of Utiel-Requena at Las Pilillas near to Requena. Stone lagars for treading the grapes were discovered, hollowed out of the rock on a hillside and surprisingly sophisticated, with slot holes for erecting cover to protect the treaders from the heat of the sun. The wine was fed by gravity to a bodega where terracotta amphorae (containers for fermented grape juice) were found and the wine was made. We know the settlement was linked to the Iberian town of Kelin, which is above Caudete and can be visited today. This was a centre of production of terracotta tinajas and amphorae.

From here it was either consumed locally or exported, a fact we know from the Iberian lettering on the handles of amphorae found elsewhere in the Mediterranean. In time, lagares (or open tanks) evolved in which the wine was fermented. Subsequently, these became the concrete tanks of the last 100 years or so. Finally… stainless steel and now concrete egg- shaped tanks to control the micro-oxygenation are being reintroduced. If you visit the centre of Requena today you can go to the Plaza de Albornoz in the old barrio of La Villa. Underneath the square and its houses and churches there are caves for storing oil, cereal and wine, which go back hundreds of years. Last week, Bodegas Murviedro opened their new visitor centre in a building dating to 1752 with much older cellars beneath which they have developed and opened as their wi-

ne-related visitor centre. The Town Hall also have a series of caves, which you can visit if you are interested in a wider historical perspective and Bar La Vila will let you visit their cellars as well. Requena is far from unique. Many towns and even countryside bodegas have caves underneath with lines of terracotta tinajas built into the soil for wine making. One such is Celler del Roure in the countryside near Moixent. Here, Pablo Calatyud and his father have been experimenting with their recuperated tinalas and their local grape varieties. His Vermell and Cullerot wines have been on the market for a while but last year a new wine, Safrà, made entirely from a regional variety (Mandó) was released onto the market. This has been fermented in concrete tanks, in the traditional way, and then aged in 800 litre tinajas for a short period and is proving very popular. Vera de Estenas , one of Utiel-Requena’s best bodegas with a long tradition of making wines from Bobal, the local variety in this region, launched their ‘Bobal de Estenas’ , a wine made in the same way. In VÍ Vid we are very privileged to regularly visit Bodegas and in particular the parts that the public do not

always get to see. Here we regularly taste from deposit and barrel, assessing the wines in their youth and development stages. We have noticed a number of cellars have introduced small tinajas and are experimenting with their own grapes and making wines in the old style, bodegas such as Vereda Real in Requena and Mas de Rander in Benlloch, Castellon. These are not necessarily for wines which will be released for sale. Other winemakers are telling us they too are experimenting to see what the differences between ageing in terracotta or oak are and what they can learn from their experiments. VÍ Vid’s experience tells us the difference is two-fold. Firstly the most obvious difference is that wine produced in terracotta has none of the attributes of wine aged in oak barrels. There is no oak, no balsamic notes, no chocolate, tobacco leaf nor spices such as clove, cinnamon or vanilla. The tannins are softer as well as the natural tannins from oak are not transferred to the wine. But, secondly, the main difference is in the micro- oxygenation. In oak, this process takes place at different speeds depending on the type of oak. American is tight-grained and therefore the process is slower. In terracotta, the process seems

to be slower too. The wine very slowly evaporates and the terracotta allows only a very small amount of air to get into the wine. This has the effect of concentrating the wine in the tinaja and if anything is transferred from the clay it is mineral and saline notes. This leaves the wine with much truer and ‘natural’ fruit flavours and tannins proper to the variety being aged. To date, our experience tells us that the experiments will continue and more ‘historic’ style wines will come onto the market. They are well worth looking out for especially for the local varieties such as Mando, Giró and Bobal rather than the Noble varieties.

ANITA GIRO Why ‘Anita Giro’ you ask? Indeed, the name is a play on words of the Bonnie Tyler song ‘I Need a Hero.’ Now that’s a good sign!!! Set on a side street of the old town, it is only a stone’s throw from the Torres de Quart so pretty damn easy to find… Since opening in September of 2009, it would be fair to say that ‘Anita Giro’ is somewhere that has really earned its stripes. Various members of the ‘24/7 Valencia’ team have been popping in regularly for a beer and their mostly Mediterranean tapas with an international touch over the years. It’s a liberal mix of clientele, tasty cuisine and it has a rather distinctive buzz that sets it apart from its generic counterparts. Incidentally, it’s LGBT-friendly too… There is a long terrace outside that is often busy and the arty interior is an unpretentious mix of styles with a historic wall at the back and vintage-style long bar, black high stools, low chairs & modern white tables for dining. You can also enjoy displays of paintings with-a-bit-of-spark on by local artists. As you enter, there is a zone

to browse the local newspapers & magazines and flyers for what’s on… We have always been treated well by the welcoming staff, some of whom speak English and their menus are conveniently in either Spanish or English. There is an international vibe to this place and it is still very much the local popular hangout with open-minded creatives of the city and its surroundings. It’s a tolerant place and there is a sense of freedom here that only adds to its appeal. The last time we visited, Valencia was still very warm despite being early autumn… so we ordered a couple of glasses of ‘Frutos Villar’ white wine from Valladolid (8.50€ a bottle), which was 2€ a glass. It was fairly fruity and had quite a bit of body and it lasted us the whole evening. For starters, we went for two ‘crunchy spinach rolls’(6.50€ in total)

which turned out to be a perfect combination with the mushrooms, pine nuts and gorgonzola complementing the ‘espinaca’ beautifully and was ‘buenissima’ in the experienced opinion of our Spanish speaking companion at the table. On to the main course and we were intrigued to try the ‘Beef ribs’(11.50€) for the first time ever and we were not disappointed. Beautifully presented with sweet potato shavings, the meat was rich and lovingly tender and the well-prepared barbecue sauce was just right…so we really took our time savouring this filling dish. We were well sated by our main course but we chose to share a recommended dessert, which was the ‘Cheese cake.’ It was a delicious creation to look at as well as wind the evening down with. Their ‘tapas to share’ choice is ample and attractively-presented with choices like ‘Brie with honey and pine nuts’ as well as an ample ‘Cheese board’ and tasty ‘Bravas’ and so much more… Amongst our favourite ‘Toast with toppings’ is the ‘Goat’s cheese with tomato marmalade.’ Perhaps a more Valencian choice would be

their rather special ‘Monkfish pitta with lettuce, spicy tomato, feta and yoghurt.’ It’s worth mentioning that care is taken to present all their dishes with artistic flair as well as having the freshest ingredients. The quietly charismatic and very well-travelled owner Puri tells us that ‘Anita Giro’ is now opening every Sunday from midday. This is so you can meet up for Vermouth with their tapas of fresh seafood & fish straight from the port! We’ll be back soon and we really recommend that you check it out too!
