Lou Reed wrote that legendary song. When he eventually played in Valencia, he was deeply impressed by his stay in the city. He savoured a paella down by the beach and practiced Tai chi in the Rio Turia Gardens. According to his manager, Reed even considered the option of moving to this fair city… adding you could count on one hand the number of times Lou had something good to say about the places he visited!

OBLIVIUM

Floatation: the ultimate experience in relaxation. Floating is a method of attaining the deepest relaxation one can experience.Essentially, floatation is spending 50 minutes lying quietly in the dark (or with a soft light if you prefer), suspended in a warm solution of Epsom salt, about 8" deep and so densethat you float effortlessly. You can float with some gently music to help you relax or just in absolute silence. In this gravity free environment the body balances and heals internally as all the senses are rested. Floating is used widely in the treatment of stress, anxiety, jet lag and to improve concentration and creativity. One hour of floating has the restorative effects of 4 hours of sleep! At Oblivium, we offer different natu ral therapies: massage, osteopathy, acupuncture, shiatsu, Thai massa-

ge, Stone massage, reiki, four-hands massage, lymphatic massage, aromatherapy, reflexology, tuina Chinese massage and many more.

VINTAGE SHOPPING Vintage in Valencia The vintage scene in Valencia is vastly present and growing. In streets such as C/ Colón and the hip barrios of Ruzafa and Carmen, there are vintage stores that have clearly developed their own brand and personality, which line the sidewalks. The recreation and selling of retro, edgy and bohemian styles that mirror images from the 1940s to the early 2000s, is an up-and -coming movement led by younger generations throughout the world. Valencia’s vintage presence runs parallel to those of Paris, London, and other parts of the globe, including large cities in the United States like New York, Los Angeles and Chicago. Finding vintage pieces that correspond with your own style and charisma is the most important part of vintage shopping. Luckily, Valencia has so many options that there is a spot for everyone to find their own groove and express themselves through clothing and other eccentric accessories.

SANTA BARBARA

SOHO DEL CARMEN

SISTER BIRKIN

Located on Colon Street (C/Colón), Santa Barbara Store is right in the hub of Valencia’s shopping district. As the crowds of C/ Colón populate the streets, its downstairs entrance can be hard to miss but, once you walk down its art-lined steps, you enter a beachy and relaxed atmosphere.

Looking for original and funky pieces that will always stand out from the crowd? Soho Del Carmen is the perfect spot. It is tucked between the narrow roads of the historic Carmen district and its selection includes matching two pieces from the 1950s, flirty flapper dresses, and the coolest faux-fur accessories.

Just down the road from Soho Del Carmen, sits Sister Birkin! This quaint little store is characterized by pastel shades and soft fabrics. They have a large number of elegant, dainty and floral dresses perfect for the summer and all different occasions. Most of the selection is made for girls, with a few unisex pieces also incorporated.

The trendy staff at Soho is eager and always willing to help you find the perfect piece, and if this place wasn’t quirky enough, random bands and artists will even sometimes make a quick, live appearance!

This is the perfect place to find a perfect outfit for a wedding, a latenight outing to a rooftop bar, or even a present for all the lady friends and relatives in your life! Can’t make it out to their actual location? Their website is wonderfully organized and always updated with all products.

The racks of clothes include retro bathing suits, a wide denim selection and vibrant patterns of brands like Adidas, Nike, and Levi’s. The coolest part? The music is always fun and upbeat, making shopping here a cool experience. On every item there are also classic songs written on the tags… a little detail that definitely correlates with this store’s vibe. MADAME MIM

RUZAFA VINTAGE

PETTICOAT VINTAGE LAB

Madame Mim is the perfect location for vintage newcomers, and even more so for those who are looking for something to set their classic wardrobe apart from other vintage options. This store has a very dark and artsy charisma to it, and is different in the way that it sells clothing, as well as old record players, sewing machines, suitcases, costumes and other trinkets. The clothing selection is very old-style European with pieces mimicking royal and pristine styles. This spot is enchanting in the way that once you step in; you can’t help but be amazed by the historic value of the pieces, which creates an enchanting kind of mysteriousness. To acquire any of these pieces would be an absolute privilege.

What’s better than wearing vintage pieces? Decorating your house with them! Ruzafa Vintage is unique in the way that it is a consignment store that sells everything from lamps to rugs to ornate mirrors!

Also located in the young and stylish barrio of Ruzafa, Petticoat Vintage Lab is a Valencian vintage spot that cannot be missed. The character of this store is refreshingly traditional, as it easy to navigate through the store, and they have anything your vintage-loving heart desires!

Address: Calle Puerto Rico, 30, 46006 Valencia Phone: 963 25 59 41 Instagram: @madame.mim.shop

RESTAURANT OF THE MONTH

RESTAURANTE EL ARENAL LA CUINA DEL CHEF

INTERVIEW WITH AWARD-WINNING CHEF MARIA TERESA CAMACHO 1. Can you tell us something about your background? I’m from a Valencian family where both my parents cooked traditional dishes to a reasonable standard. However, I was the only one in the family really curious about cooking a wider variety of cuisine from an early age. I loved being in the kitchen more than my mum! 2. How did you get involved in the World of Catering? I had been cooking for many years at home. After getting divorced, I trained to be a chef to improve my technique. I passed my chef exams at the Hotel Astoria of Valencia. When i set up my company ‘Catering Aire’ in 2002, it was with my two adult sons helping out at weekends. It started out as just the three of us doing private functions at wealthy people’s homes, for example.

Since then, the company has grown a lot and we do all sorts of catering with a bigger team, including weddings & birthdays & events, all over Spain. We have catered at functions in La Rioja, Zaragoza, Teruel, Cuenca, Madrid and the Valencia Community. We’ve done giant paellas, huge pizzas & tortillas, even a bocadillo that measured 40 meters for 900 customers! We have also catered in Frankfurt in Germany, Naples in Italy and Paris in France.

award for my Catering Company in 2014. We also do a television programme called “Cocinando con Estrellas.”

With an inquisitive mind regarding studying cuisine abroad and how things function overseas, i have been fortunate to have travelled a fair bit and very much enjoyed visiting Switzerland, France, New York on numerous occasions and London too.

Curry Mussels with orange, Candied cod with spinach & raisins, Sea bream mille-feuille, Iberian sirloin with wine sauce, Grilled entrecôte with asparagus, Salmon fideuá with cockles, Manchegan gazpacho with rabbit & mushrooms, Black noodles fideuá with allioli and Marinated rib with Parisian potatoes and paprika from La Vera, various croquettes and more…

Can you tell us about your awards? I have won the medalla de oro (Gold medal) as a merit for my work and a ‘Premio Mediterraneo Excellente’

Can you tell us about your newish project ‘La Cuina del Chef’? The restaurant is based in a quiet street in the heart of Valencia. We do all types of paellas, grilled meats & fish dishes with Mediterranean fusions. Some examples include:

FOOD BY HELEN WESTWATER OF LA OLA FRESCA POLENTA TARONJA CRUNCH

POLENTA TARONJA CRUNCH In the spring of 2018, Valencia celebrated the ‘València Ciudad Amable y el XV Congreso Ibérico La Bicicleta y la Ciudad’. ‘Ciudad Amable’ is an incentive from Andalusia, to promote the concept of a “friendly city”, with good public transport services, less traffic, nature and parks, sustainable tourism and safe cycling routes. Valencia with its now amazing network of cycle trails, the river park of the Turia, definitely fits the criteria. At this year’s conference, ‘La Ola Fresca’ was lucky enough to be involved in providing vegan ‘friendly’ food with minimal packaging for several hundred hungry cyclists. These vegan polenta cupcakes, with orange ‘taronja’, gave a Valencian theme and kept to the guidelines but the only snag was ‘Cupcake holders’, which seem to have become more and more plastic as the cupcake craze has taken off. However, it is so easy to make your own and they look pretty too. Just take un-dyed baking parchment sheet and cut into small squares slightly bigger than your molds. When you have made your mixture, you just make a little triangle fold so you have a tulip-shape and fill straight away.

Polenta Taronja Crunch

Makes about 16 Heat the oven to 180degrees centigrade

Method Mix all the dry ingredients and stir well. Measure the liquid ingredients and stir well. Carefully stir the liquid ingredients into the dry. As with muffins the more gently you do this, the more fluffy it will be. Leave it to stand while you make your baking-parchment squares. Fill your cupcake/muffin tray one by one. You will need to hold the paper in place as you fill them.

Make some orange slices to dry in the oven as it is cooling. Bake in the middle of the oven for about 12 to 15 minutes. Cool on a cooling rack before icing with the topping and decorating with the dried orange pieces. If you want to get more involved in promoting safe cycle routes and cycling events in Valencia you can join www. valenciaenbici.org

RESTAURANT OF THE MONTH

VALENCIA EL ARENALFOOTBALL

AN HISTORIC SEASON AHEAD The World Cup may be staying in Europe but players from this city’s two professional clubs made little impact for their respective countries in this year’s competition. Rodrigo Moreno was Valencia’s sole player in the Spanish squad and looked a potential starter for the team until a management switch just 48 hours before Spain’s first game with Portugal. Julen Lopetegui’s agreement to manage Real Madrid, once the World Cup had finished, left the Spanish Football Association alarmed at the timing of the announcement on the one hand, and furious at the underhanded way the decision was made on the other. In a knee-jerk reaction that was more political than sensible, the likeable Basque was immediately replaced by the former Real Madrid and Bolton favourite Fernando Hierro. His preference for Diego Costa, Iago Aspas and Marco Asensio up front ensured Rodrigo fell down the pecking order in Hierro’s plans. Late, late substitute appearances against Iran and Morocco and an extra-time

replacement, for Asensio in the 103rd minute against Russia, gave Rodrigo very little opportunity to make his mark on the tournament. Paris Saint Germain and Valencia continue to lock horns over the future of Gonçalo Guedes. He currently remains on the French club’s books but Los Che continue to look to find ways to ensure the Portuguese star dons the Valencia shirt again next season. The fact his performances in the World Cup were mainly uninspiring may play into the Spanish clubs hands, in warding off other potential suitors. Jefferson Lerma was Levante’s only representative at this year’s World Cup. He played the full ninety minutes in Columbia’s loss to Japan, but had to settle for two substitute appearances in the other Group games against Poland and Senegal. He was then recalled to the starting line-up for the knock out stages and the game against England. On the hour mark Lerma made way for Carlos Bacca. Ironically, the latter went on to miss one of the penalties in the shoot-out… that saw England continue its run in

the competition. Players from both Levante and Valencia who were not involved in the quadrennial event will now return to their respective clubs for pre-season training. Levante UD actually started back on July 5th and manager Paco López will be hoping his team produce the kind of performances that saw his team beat Barcelona at the end of the season 5-4 on a more regular basis. The club have triggered the buy-out clause on Erick Cabaco for two million from Club Nacional de Football of Montevideo and Coke has also joined from Schalke 04. The cultured left winger Rubin Rochina has also signed from Ruban Kazan on a three year deal, after the Sagunto born starlet impressed at the back end of last season on a loan spell. The club are again offering a free season ticket for the 2019/20 season for any “abono” who attends all 19 league games and if the club stay in La Liga. To date they have over 15,000 season ticket holders for the coming season, many of whom have capitalised on this excellent incentive that started last year.

Anyone wishing to see ‘Las Granotas’ play before the season starts, can take a trip down to the Pinatar Arena in Murcia where they will play Bournemouth on Friday 20th July. Kick off time is 20:00 hours. They then go to Holland for a four match tour against PEC Zwolle, Feyenoord, Utrecht and SC Heerenveen before heading back to Spain for away games in Albacete and Zaragoza. Meanwhile, Valencia are shaping up nicely for one of the biggest seasons in their history. 2019 will be their centenary year and fans and players alike will be hoping that at least one meaningful piece of silverware comes their way. All eyes will be on Monaco on the 30th August when the Champion’s League group stage draw takes place. The fans will also be buoyed by the fact that Geoffrey Kondogbia is

now officially a Valencia player and the club have also invested heavily in another Frenchman, Mouctar Diakhaby, from Olympique de Lyon. The under 21 year old defender has signed a five year deal with the club. Another international, the midfielder Uroš Račić has also joined from Red Star Belgrade, and in an ironic twist, he could be vying with his Serbian team mate Nemanja Maksimović for a starting place. With the situation regarding Guedes in the balance, the club have also been eyeing and linked with Kevin Gameiro and the Celta Vigo duo Daniel Wass and Iago Aspas. The first two seem to be very close to signing on the dotted line if the local media are anything to go by, whilst the approach for Aspas may not gain momentum until the impending transfer of Simone Zaza to AC Milan is done and dusted. Two players who have definitely headed out of

the Mestalla are Joao Cancelo and Zakaria Bakkali. Not surprising really as both were out on loan for the majority of last season. Cancelo has joined Juventus whilst Bakkali is back in his home country, having put pen to paper with Anderlecht recently. Aymen Abdennour and Nani should also be off the Valencia payroll by the time the season starts. One worrying factor is the amount of youngsters attached to the Valencia Mestalla squad that are heading out or possibly moving on. Eugeni has already signed for La Liga newcomers Huesca, and the Nachos (Vidal and Gil) have both been heavily linked with Deportivo La Coruña. Fran Villalba looks to be moving on loan to Numancia for the season, whilst wonder kid Kangin Lee is being hounded by Real Madrid. Finally, Valencia have lost the very talented youngster Harvey Neville (son of Phil) Article © 2018 24/7 Valencia

who is now turning to Old Trafford in the hope of emulating his father and uncle. To date, Valencia have confirmed one home game so far in the pre-season. This year’s Trofeo Naranja (the 47th) will be against Bayer Leverkusen at the Mestalla on 11th August, 21:30 hours start. They will also have a short tour of England when they will play Leicester on the 1st August and Everton on the 4th. Further celebrations and surprises are sure to follow in 2019 as the club look to make their centenary year a date to remember. SLAVIA (Interview with owner ALEX)

1. Can you tell us a bit about your background in the world of Valencia nightlife? I started out as a waiter while I was studying at University and eventually became manager of 2 pubs. After that, in 1996, I started SLAVIA in the historic centre. In 2005, I opened CAFÉ DE LAS LUCES in what has now become the hip barrio of Benimaclet. 2. Can you tell us about the drinks that can be enjoyed at SLAVIA? We really look after our product in terms of quality and variety. We have nearly 25 cervezas from countries around the world including Belgium, Germany, France, Spain and Valencian craft beers and more… Slavia has been famous for its ‘Agua de Valencia’ cocktails for many years. We have more than 30 different types of Gins. We care for our customers about presenting & combining the Ginebres well with our Tonicas. We have many types of cocktails

including caipirinhas, piñas coladas, caipiroskas, mojitos, negronis (which our Italian customers love) and more. In the winter months, we tend to have a more Spanish public. However, in the spring and summer it’s a more cosmopolitan crowd. 3. What kind of music can you find at Slavia? Good melodies. Quality Pop music from Spain and internationally too, some Reggaeton in the hotter months, some commercial & remembermusic, some Black music, some Rock tunes but no House music. We are open to all ages. 4. Can you tell us something interesting about the interior? Slavia is the only local in the barrio that has the 11th century Islamic wall from the Moorish period of Valencia. There are 2 zones, one is the bar with dancefloor and the other is a Chill Out zone with tables and seating. We also have a terraza outside that is great for watching the world go by at night…

5. How do you find the barrio these days? I believe that the dynamic is on the up in the old centre. The faddish barrios away from the centre have become a bit saturated & castigated too. After 3 or 4 years of things being quieter, there is more life, a better quality public & more people in the Barrio del Carmen again. It’s been renovated and its growing again. I’m optimistic about the future here…

FERIA DE JULIO VALENCIA

ALL THE FUN OF THE FAIR Valencia’s Feria de Julio will be 147 years old this year. Once again, for the whole month of July, the Viveros gardens will be rocking to music you only usually find on a second-hand record stall, people will be glugging down horchata and throwing flowers, and kids will be eating candy floss and having their faces painted. It’s good, surprisingly low-key, hot-summernight fun and it has a grand old history. The first Feria de Julio took place in Valencia in 1871 from the 21st to the 26th July. It was to be a festival of the new middle classes in a city which had just thrown down its medieval walls and was figuratively and actually breaking free of its past and looking forward to a new economy of industry, mass agriculture and export. This was a brave new steam-powered and high-financed world with its own new plush areas of the city like the Ensanche and the Gran Vias and its own magnificent cathedrals to commerce, the Estación del Norte, the Central and Colón Markets and the Clock Tower building at the port.

The newly rich business classes were desperate to make Valencia a modern, cosmopolitan, European city. It was only a matter of time before the powers-that-be sanctioned the establishment of a City Fair and Exhibition. Traders and farmers were pushing for the creation of a fair where their wares and the products of the new Valencian industries could be exhibited. In turn, the Ayuntamiento wanted to keep the richer families in the city for as long as possible before they went off to their country houses or on their European Tour. The well-heeled families wanted a chance to meet and greet and show off their wealth. A Mary Poppins style “Jolly Holiday” was seen as the perfect opportunity to swan around in a big hat, a frilly dress and a parasol, and so the ‘Feria de Julio’ was born. These first ferias included various agricultural shows; livestock in the river (between the Puente de la Trinidad and the Puente Real) and fruit, vegetables and flowers in the Viveros Gardens. There were also exhibitions of the latest products manufactured by Valencian industry at the newly built Medicine faculty at the beginning of what is now Avenida Blasco Ibáñez and art exhibitions in the old Convento del Carmen, now the Centro Cultural del Carmen. On top of this you could also attend bullfights, or take part in a carnival parade or a shooting match, watch a Tug-of-war competition for cart horses. Of course, this being Valencia, there was a firework display every night in the Alameda.

All the big names came out; Cirilo Amorós, the Marqués de Campo, the Marqués del Turia, Felix Pizcueta (in short, most of the big bods who named streets after themselves around the Ensanche). From the world of the Arts: Sorolla, Benlliure and Blasco Ibáñez all supported the event, making it a must on the Valencian social calendar. Great ornate pavilions were constructed along the Alameda by the Ayuntamiento and different well-to-do societies like the ‘Ateneo Mercantil’ and the ‘Real Sociedad Económica de Amigos del País’. This was the real heart of the whole event, where the people that mattered could take a stroll and the young debutantes could dance and cool off with a horchata or a barley water. Over the years modern attractions were added, such as tournaments involving the newly imported sport of football and regattas and swimming races across the port. In 1907, there was even an air race from Valencia to Alicante for those magnificent men in their flying machines. One of the mainstays of the festival, the battle of flowers, or to give it its rather grander official name the ‘Fiesta Floreal Valenciana’ first took place in 1891. The daughters of the wealthy families of the city were paraded along the Alameda in carriages where the discreet but seriously passionate

39

young gentlemen of the time (only those from the right families) would throw them flowers and read them (usually embarrassingly awful) romantic poetry. The whole thing was originally devised by Don Pascual Frígola… just for the chance to parade his daughters in front of the Great and the Good along the Alameda. The tradition survives to this day. By 1939, after the Civil War, the old confidence was gone. There wasn’t any money to throw around and the old class structure was disappearing. Any show of ostentation like the old style Feria de Julio was frowned upon. That should have been the end of it but somehow the Feria hung on. Things, however, had to change. The pavilions were still set up in July along the Alameda throughout the years of the dictatorship but they became much less exclusive, no longer attracting the elite of society and were open to all. These new pavilions were more likely to be run by the local Fallas or neighbourhood associations than by the top-hatted paternalistic societies of before. The grand old Ayuntamiento pavilions became woodworm-ridden and unsteady and, eventually, declared unsafe. They were left to decay in the Viveros gardens until they were

finally destroyed by a fire in 1981, a testament to the Feria’s steady decline from its turn of the century heyday. The main site of the Feria was moved from the upmarket Alameda out to Avenida de la Plata in 1974 and was shunted around different parts of the city. The great shows of yesteryear, just like the social classes that spawned them, fell into decadence or all but disappeared. That said, Valencians in their fifties and beyond may still remember with certain nostalgia partaking of a cool horchata, in one of the creaky old pavilions on a hot July night, with Nino Bravo blasting out over the loud speaker. Little now remains of the old Feria de Julio. The tradition of the battle of the flowers is one of the few aspects of the original ferias which have survived, although these days it’s just a load of people having a laugh throwing flowers at some other people going past on a carriage…and there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that! We also still have those two essential staples of any Valencian festival, the fireworks and the brass bands. There are art exhibitions and bullfights and at the heart of the modern Feria are the concerts in the

Viveros. Primavera Sound it is not. Some of the acts seem to be chosen by middle-aged politicians and civil servants trying to relive their youth, hence the appearance over the years of Bob Dylan, Joan Manuel Serrat, the Beach Boys, Iggy Pop and Pat Metheny. That said, these are big acts and the atmosphere at an open-air gig on a balmy night in July is worth sampling. They generally try to give you a little bit of everything and this year you have the usual mishmash of genres. In 2018, the artists include The Waterboys, Ruben Blades, Christina Rosenvinge, Caetano Veloso, Bomba Estéreo, Emir Kusturica, Ky-Mani Marley, Rosendo and more… There are also regular, more barrio-related, lower key events in the Parque del Oeste, the Jardín de Ayora and other parts of the city. These include children’s theatre, traditional dance groups and a medieval fair selling medieval kebabs, medieval lampshades, scented candles and pulpo a feira. The evening in the barrios often ends with the ubiquitous sound of a verbena band thumping out Pasodobles and Coplas at window-rattling decibel levels, late into the night. Not sure what the Marques de Campo would have made of that. ¡Viva la Feria de Julio!

FESTIVAL OVERVIEW 2018

SUN, MUSIC AND INNOVATION IN VALENCIA REGION This year Valencia has not only taken the national lead in the sheer amount of talent and variety of its festival offerings. After many years of looking in awe and a touch of jealousy at Barcelona, Bilbao and Madrid when we wanted to look for the big names on the international music scene…we now need to look no further. By the time this article goes to press, we will have been through the first edition of 4EverFestival at the very docks of la Marina Sur. ElectroSplash have moved down to the capital from their regular venue of Vinarós beach and set up shop at the shores of the Marina and the Malvarrosa Beach. Without trying to be comprehensive in the absolutely stunning display of talent present in Valencia this summer; The Prodigy, Simple Minds, The Cult, Manic Street Preachers, Kaiser Chiefs alongside electronic legends Marshall Jefferson from

EXCLUSIVE photos by Kaiko © 2017 24/7 Valencia See more at www.kaiko.es

Chicago, Culoe de Song from South Africa and 2manyDJs from Belgium will have warmed up the dancefloors pegged to the Valencia Marina / beach area, and this has only been a warmup! As far as sheer star power is concerned, FIB, Festival Internacional de Benicàssim, from 19-22 July is just an hour´s ride up north from Valencia and will again deliver with theme-based nights. Headliners include Killers, Liam Gallagher, Travis Scott and Pet Shop Boys, with some of the regular favourites from the overwhelmingly English-speaking campers, Bastille, The Vaccines, Madness, Catfish and the Bottlemen, Belle & Sebastian to name but a few of the return artists. See fiberfib.comfor more info… Low Festival, held in the vacation spot of Benidorm from 27-29 July will feature The Chemical Brothers, Los Planetas, Phoenix and Scottish rock legends Biffy Clyro, who have been one of the most spectacular live bands to have shaken up Spanish and expat partygoers in the last few years, making it from the early hours

of secondary stages of rock festivals to being headliners at the major crossover events: lowfestival.es To show how deeply imbedded some of these acts are in the local scene, Los Planetas already featured as headliners at the very first edition of FIB in 1995 held at their old venue of Velódromo de Benicàssim and have stood the test of time. As far as local Valencian initiatives go, 2018 has kept up some of the traditions of the past few years, like the Concerts de Vivers series as part of Feria de Julio held in the Viveros Gardens of Valencia. Emir Kusturica & No Smoking Orchestra will open up the vast folkloric talent of the Balkans on 5 July. Latin legend Ruben Blades plays on 10 July. Spanish star Niña Pastori on 17 July and Caetano Veloso on the 19 July. These artists are all holding the promise of being a mustsee, once-in-a-lifetime experience. We must not forget rock veteran Rosendo on 27 July and Iván Ferreiro on the 13 July. All the way from Colombia, check out Bomba Estéreo with their dance tropical & electro cumbia on 18

July. To give us a taster of what’s to come later on this summer, Ky-Mani Marley will showcase the Rototom Sunsplash festival with some reggae on the loose on 21 July at Viveros:concertsdevivers.com Lovers of music from around the world should get to the Iboga Summer Festivalfrom 25-29 July with Soviet Suprem, Julian Marley & the Uprising, Lucky Chops, Fatoumata Diawara, La Caravane Passe, Eskorzo, Balkan Bomba and many more: http://www. ibogasummerfestival.com/ Rototom Sunplash will take place in Benicassim from 16-22 August, with Orishas as featured artists alongside some of the biggest names in reggae like Jimmy Cliff, Sly & Robbie ft Yellowman and many more and you can enjoy different genres of music too. It’s a festival where the hard-hitting sun can be easily eased with a quick stroll down to the local beach by day.

Rototom is more than just Europe’s prime reggae festival but also has a strong focus on its famous social, intercultural, artistic and community spirit: rototomsunsplash.com On the other hand, and especially on the electronic front, there has Valencia has experienced a major shift in its focus and that focus has been towards the sea, to be more precise, finally taking advantage and use of the installations of the Marina Norte and Marina Sur. If one takes a stroll down the Marina area, it is hard to pass a weekend without running into a live event, some of them, like The Basement´s 360º party stage set up seaside as well as occasional special events held at the Akuarela Playa facilities have drawn a steady following. Others, such as Palau Electrònic, at the very terrace of the Palau de la Música have combined the impressive

modern architecture the city has to offer with the most innovative sounds, provided by local talent, with the budding SieRRRa label taking the lead, as well as inviting top DJs from the Berlin club scene. The electronic offering of the coast will be topped off with Medusa Sunbeach in Cullera between 8-13 August: www. medusasunbeach.com Check out Dreambeach Villaricos from 8-12 August as an alternative a bit further down the coast: www. dreambeach.es So, get your sunscreen out and your latest pair of sunglasses and hats and raise them in honor of a great summer ahead! VALENCIA MUSIC

ALBERT SANZ

Albert Sanz was born into a very musical family in Valencia. His mother, Mamen García, is a great singer-songwriter and award-winning theatre, film and television actress. His father Josep Sanz is a conductor, classical pianist and composer…

as co-leader with the Catalan bassist David Mengual. This record was voted best Spanish jazz record of the year by Spanish jazz critics (Cuadernos de Jazz). A year later, Albert received the SGAE Prize for the Jazz revelation artist and another prize as a revelation artist for Turia magazine.

From an early age, Sanz was surrounded by his father’s classical music and the varied repertoire of songs from Mamen. From coplas to bossa nova, to Cuban boleros, tangos, Italian, French, and jazz standards. Sanz remembers his mother playing the piano at home a lot and singing.

After being offered a full scholarship to the prestigious Berklee College of Music, Albert moved to Boston in 2000 where he played with Robert Stillman, Chris Van Voorst, Kendrick Scott, eventually forming the Kalifactors band and recording his CD ‘Kalifactors’, released on the label Fresh Sound. He also played with David Doruzka, Jason Palmer, Walter Smith, Lage Lund, Lionel Loueke, Javier Vercher and Ferenc Nemeth among others.

As a teenager, he began to learn songs on guitar and electric bass until he decided to study classical piano at the Valencia Conservatory. Shortly after, his father took him to a jazz concert where: “I fell forever in love with the spirit of this music.”, "la ceremonia " o "el bienvenido" que es un fandango dedicado a mi hijo y cuenta con la colaboración especial de Jorge Pardo.

After graduating cum laude in Berklee, Albert moved to New York in 2002 where he immersed himself in the scene and played with the groups of Kurt Rosenwinkel & Joe Martin, Larry Grenadier, Jeff Ballard and Chris Cheek. A concert from this era was also recorded and edited with Fresh Sound Records under the name ‘Los Guys’ (2003).

Soon after, Albert started playing with other musicians in Valencia, combining the conservatory with studies in the Barcelona Music Workshop, concerts and all possible jam sessions. At age 18 he was selected to represent Spain in the European Youth Jazz Orchestra (EJYO) traveling for three weeks throughout Europe and recording the first record of the EJYO. In 1998, Albert recorded his first album ‘Des D'aquí’

The Valencia IVM commissioned Albert to record an album and compose all the material with the consequent edition of ‘El Fabulador.’ This album was voted one of the best Spanish jazz records of the last decade by critics in Spain (Cuadernos de Jazz). Shortly after this recording, Albert moved back to Spain, where he was offered a position as a Jazz teacher at the Musikene Conservatory of the Basque Country and later in the Jazz department at the Valencia Conservatory. Albert combines teaching with concerts and releases a live album (‘Metamorfosis’) with his trio at that time (with Masa Kamaguchi and RJ Miller) for the label Fresh Sound Records. He also collaborated in the bands and recordings of Flamenco big band by Perico Sambeat, the trio and quintet by Jorge Rossy (as hammond organist), Jordi Matas and Carme Canela (as organist as well), and the famous project Silvia Pérez Cruz and Javier Colina trio that gave rise to the album ‘En La Imaginación.’ As a music producer and arranger, he recorded the album by his mother Mamen García (‘El Cofrecito’) in which musicians such as Jorge Rossy, Javier Colina and Antonio Serrano collaborated.

Can you tell us something about your album, ‘Mediterraníes’? Albert Sanz: “Some say that ‘Mediterraníes’ is perhaps my most endearing & intimate project, musically speaking. I am fortunate to be accompanied on bass and guitar by Munir Hossn, who has worked with Joe Zawinul, Alex Acuña, Gilberto Gil, Javier Ruibal and Jerry González. He is without doubt one of the most exciting exponents of the new generation of Brazilian musicians. Sergio Martínez is on percussion and he has collaborated with musicians as diverse as Diego el Cigala, Paul Simon, Danilo Perez or the National Ballet of Spain. The Mediterranean is a symbol of light, diversity and has a very rich history. From Valencia you can cross the sea in the direction of Algeciras, or in the opposite direction reach the coasts of Croatia, passing through Naples or continue on the way to Israel or Cairo. These ‘Mediterranies’ do not pretend to emulate an explicit journey to so many different human and sound landscapes, but to connect with an emotion, with a luminous feeling, rich in nuances, sometimes funny and deep, but always full of melody.

Albert took a step forward producing the album "O Que Será" in New York, an album with a stellar trio composed by the great drummer Al Foster (Miles Davis) and the bassist Javier Colina (Bebo Valdés). Recorded by the great James Farber. He also had the opportunity to travel with this great trio playing in the main festivals in Spain and also recording live / recorded in the Café Central de Madrid the On the album you will be able to listen to songs such as the beautiful ‘Carta a l'exili’ by the Greek Christos Leontis, ‘Jo vinc d'un silenci’ by album / bootleg: ‘For Regulars Only’. the singer Raimon and my evocative compositions such as ‘Opatija’ inspired by a Croatian dance, ‘The Ceremony’ or ‘The Welcome’… that As a composer for theatre, Albert has collaborated is a fandango dedicated to my son and has the special collaboration with the award-winning and special company of Jorge Pardo.” ‘Bambalina teatre practicable’, creating music for the shows ‘Ulysses’, ‘Cosmos’, the musical ‘El Interview by Owl Geperut de Notre Dame’ and ‘Petit Pierre.’
