‘Splendini Bar i Discos’ opened its doors on Calle Segorbe número 10, just last December! It is a stone’s throw from the main train station so very central and easy to find. Splendini is an evolution from the old record shop Mardigras!, which opened to the public in 1999. It changed various locations over its 15 years of existence, mostly in the Barrio del Carmen… until it became ‘Splendini’. For the last 3 years it had formed part of the wonderful ‘Cracovia’ Bar. Now, Jordi Belenguer and Jose ‘Mardi’ have a “local” that literally mixes the concept of a BAR & RECORD SHOP.

You can enjoy good beers, wines and liqueurs accompanied by the best music on offer including a wonderful soul, jazz and rock soundtrack with vinyl for sale. They also buy your records. One of the reasons for Valencia’s many riches is the legacy of the Moors in Valencia, who ruled here for over 500 years. The outpouring of grief on social media, when the news broke of his death, is a testament to just how much Paco Luna meant to people in Valencia. ALBORAYA WHY ALBORAYA COULD BE THE PERFECT PLACE FOR YOUR VALENCIA PROPERTY If you have been thinking about moving to the city of Valencia you may have heard about the increasingly fashionable areas like Ruzafa, El Carmen, Ensanche, Malvarrosa, Cabanyal and more. We have written about these areas a lot on our blog www.valencia-Property.com/ new. What you may overlook though is Alboraya as it is not officially a part of the city; it is a town in its own right. However, part of it really is a continuation of the beach areas of Cabanyal and Malvarrosa, the only break is a small bridge from Malvarrosa beach to the Patacona, Alboraya’s beach. Alboraya itself is divided into three areas and they are all very different. The aforementioned beach part (The Patacona), the old town of Alboraya and the Port Saplaya marina. They are separated by fields of ‘Chufas’ (Tiger Nuts) of about a kilometre from the beach to the old town and a few kilometres from the old town to Port Saplaya. Alboraya is famous in Valencia for the drink Horchata. There are many horchaterias in Alboraya including the famous ‘Horchateria Daniel’ and the town itself is on the metro line into the centre of Valencia. At its side stands the Levante football stadium and the now hip neighbourhood of Benimaclet. They are separated from Alboraya by the ring road, giving great access to other areas of Valencia in just a few minutes. Apartments in the old town of Alboraya are relatively cheap and competitive in price compared with nearby Valencia and other villages. It is full of shops, cafes and restaurants to suit your needs. You can

get an apartment in Alboraya from around 70k. From Alboraya old town you are 10 minutes away from the beach, university and centre of Valencia by bike, public transport or car. Living by the beach is different from the old town. Firstly, the apartments are almost all new, having been built in the boom between 2000 and 2007. Therefore, their prices are higher not just because of their newness and build cost but also due to their proximity to the sea. Secondly, all of them are within 500m of the sea as there are effectively three blocks of apartments that stand behind the traditional row of beachfront houses, which have been largely converted now into excellent cafes and restaurants. This means that the promenade of Alboraya is always a great place to hang out throughout the year. Port Saplaya has another feel alto-

gether. It is a purpose- built Marina development with all of the apartments either looking out to the sea or into the interior Marina. Unusually, all of the apartments in the area have at least a small terrace to enjoy the views, the sea air and the climate. As we mentioned, the three areas of Alboraya are separated by the fields of Tiger Nuts. Within this area, known as ‘La Huerta’, there are quite a few old style farmhouses. Some have been converted for residential use and some are still working farms. A few years back, the local council in Alboraya started to give out licences for cafes and restaurants on the Promenade. They then added to this the beach bars in the summer, making the Patacona the place to be and to be seen in Valencia’s beach nightlife area. tacona beach, there are now eight cafes and restaurants within easy reach and they all have their specialities and charms. Let’s take a look.

The Patacona Restaurant Scene The first and oldest restaurant in the block is the ‘Casa Llevant’. It has the largest terrace to the front and does a more than decent menu of the day based around rice dishes. It is the most sheltered if windy on the front too, as it is less exposed. The ‘Can Luca’ is next to the Llevant and is a recent arrival, having opened a couple of years ago. Lovely decoration and presentation of the food and a great, shady interior garden. Menus are around 15€ and include some excellent desserts. This is one of the favourites of my family. ‘La Girafe’ is similar in feel to Can Luca but the food is more French style, with specialities including French Crêpes. The menu of the day at 15.90€ and is exceptionally good value and the atmosphere both inside and outside is cosy. It has a lovely hidden garden to the rear, which is really attractive. Make sure to book at ‘La Más Bonita’ on the Patacona as invariably the tables are all taken. You can queue for the outside tables to the front but inside, and in the garden, you

usually need to book even during the week. There are now three in the city but this is the original and best. The food is based on cakes, quiches, smoothies and specialised coffees but the prices are quite high for Valencia. Smoothies are around 6€ but everyone goes there as a treat. The ‘Casa Patacona’ is a more traditional Valencia restaurant, serving rice dishes and the like but recently it has extended its opening hours and now offers breakfasts and mid-morning snacks for between 4.50€ and 7€. If you can get onto that upper terrace looking over the beach and the Paseo, it’s a great place to watch the world go by… ‘La Torreta’ stands on the site of a recently restored old Palace on the Alboraya beachfront. It was recently redeveloped and offers a different style of food, concentrating on seafood specialities. Menus are available from 17.50€. The ‘Casa Navarro’ is a traditional paella restaurant with an excellent interior garden area and the paellas are rather good too. The food has been excellent every time we have visited. ‘Spaghetti & Blues’ by the Birra & Blues team is a craft beer place where they make their own beers of various strengths. Bluesy soundtrack

and an upstairs room that you can hire for events. Their speciality is a wide range of their very own Craft Beers with cool names like ‘John Lee Hooker’ but there is a decent menu too, with an open plan kitchen and oven-cooked pizzas & pastas galore. The popular owner is Italian so the cuisine is the real deal. My favourite for the food out of these eight places is definitely ‘Can Luca’ but the atmosphere in ‘La Más Bonita’ is laid back and relaxed, a definite place to kick back and enjoy with friends. If you are just looking for a quick sit down for a coffee then any of them will do, none of them are overpriced and they all have excellent terrace service.

The Patacona Beach Bars When summer comes it is natural that the beach bars on the Patacona open. ‘La Más Bonita’ has its bar on the beach but we like the others too. ‘Patasur’, ‘El Ocho’ and others all offer shade, cold beer, smoothies, music, beach football, volleyball and great atmospheres and are open well into the night for dancing, drinking and meeting up with friends. VALENCIA BATS

King Don Jaime You can find bats everywhere in Valencia, both the symbolic version on the city’s crests and the real thing in the cracks and crevices of its buildings. There are four times as many Patudo bats in one cave in ‘El Montgó’ mountain in Javea than in the whole of France, and there are 22 different species throughout the Valencian Community. However, for some reason, they have always had a bit of a bad press. That other Valencian perennial, the dove, is the symbol of peace and the Holy Spirit while the bat has always been associated with witches, devils and the dark side of life. Small children and old ladies happily chase around and feed the disease-carrying pigeons in the Plaza de la Virgen but it would be hard to imagine them doing the same for a swarm of our winged, mouse-like friends. The

pigeons get all the grub while the animal, which really gives a service to Valencia and has been its cultural icon for the last seven centuries, has to hide away in the nooks and crannies of the city.

People are suspicious of bats; they only come out at night, and that’s probably to cavort with the prince of darkness. We know they are around… but where are they hiding during the day? Probably closer to you than you think. Just like the increasingly evident drunken stag and hen parties at closing time in Calle Caballeros, their haphazard flight is anything but graceful, they don’t look like they know where they’re going and might clumsily flap into us at any moment. They’re given to making demonic screeching noises and they’re pretty damn ugly (I’m talking about the bats now not the stag ni-

Bats are extraordinarily skilful navigators; the screeching noises are part of their advanced sonar system, which allows them to measure distances and perceive obstacles in total darkness. It is said that a bat can detect something the size of a human hair from 20 metres and, in fact, contrary to popular belief many species have excellent eyesight. As for the ugly jibe, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Most humans probably wouldn’t do too well in a bat beauty contest… The best thing about bats though, is their voracious appetite for mos-

quitoes. This is their true gift to the city. Considering Valencia was built on a swamp and is slap bang next to the huge mosquito breeding ground that is the Albufera lake and the surrounding rice fields, without the minuscule caped crusaders we’d really be in trouble. Bats eat two-thirds of the mosquitoes that enter the city so if you’ve had an itchy sleepless night lately, constantly woken by that horrible buzzing in your ear, remember, things could be so much worse. It is said that the Moors domesticated bats as a sort of medieval version of “Raid Matamosquitos” but it was the conquering Christians who made the bat the symbol of the city. As with all things related with bats, the origins of this are obscure. One legend has it that on the morning of the Christian conquest of Valencia, back in 1238, a large bat settled on the conquering King Don Jaime’s tent, which he took to be a good omen for victory. Another says that

during the battle a bat attracted by the dragon on the King’s crown intercepted a Moorish arrow, which was bound for his heart. A third tells of how the Moorish king kept a large bat, which was considered by all to be the guardian of the city. When the Christians captured and killed the Sultan’s pet, Valencia soon fell into their hands. However, the real reason for the adoption of the bat as a Valencian icon was probably Don Jaime’s connections with the rather shadowy and mysterious order of Templar knights. They brought the king up as an orphan after his father’s death and were instrumental in helping him to victory in Valencia. The bat was a key symbol of this enigmatic order, which disappeared two centuries later, accused of Satanism and practicing the dark arts. Yet more bad press for our poor pointy-eared pest controller.

So it came to be that the bat now appears on the City’s crest and every manhole cover, streetlight, bin wagon and bus stop. It was the symbol of Spook factory, the disco at the centre of the burgeoning Eighties Valencia techno scene and is the emblem for ‘Les Falles’ and cultural Clubs such as “Lo Rat Penat”. It is also the symbol of the city’s two football teams. In this case, considering some of the blood-sucking, short-sighted fly-by-nights who have run the clubs over the years, the much-maligned ‘murciélago’ is perhaps quite fitting.

RAINBOW BURGER

The ‘24/7 Valencia’ team had a great lunch here for 2 on a rainy Sunday afternoon in the cosmopolitan Cánovas district of the city. The vibe of the long and spacious restaurant was relaxed & positive. We found that the service was most friendly and helpful. The food was very colourful, tasty and filling. We went for a couple of refreshing ‘Voll-Damn’ malt beers to accompany our Sunday lunch. Our starters were a selection of artistically presented little pastries of cheese, salmon and anchovies on trendy black platters replete with a sauce to lightly dip. For our main course, we went for a lamb burger in a green avocado bun and a rich Angus burger in a red bun with potato chips. We were gently impressed by the quantity and quality. To finish off, we savoured a delicious cheesecake & also a memorable mascarpone with hazelnuts. There was love & art put into the dishes that we tried… The ‘blues’ soundtrack (Muddy Waters, Sonny Boy Williamson, Robert

Johnson, Albert King) also went down a treat… This brand new project has interesting origins. It involves a couple of lads who didn’t even know each other before but since meeting have shared the same objective: to create something original and unique! After meticulously studying their sector, doing tests, comparisons and thanks to twenty years of experience in the world of restaurants, ‘Rainbow Burger’ has come to life. This is a re-examination of the everlasting hamburger, but includes some unusual meats like rabbit, lamb and exotic meats like zebra, kangaroo and crocodile! In the menu, there are also vegan and vegetarian choices, to keep happy the good people that have chosen those paths in life. For those with the finest palates, they have 2 new burgers to enjoy: the Sushi burger and the Avocado burger! As well as this, you can enjoy bo-

cadillos with fresh fish, salmon and fried octopus. All of their buns are served with homemade sauces, spicy potato chips and crunchy vegetables a la tempura. Why Rainbow Burger? The name rainbow refers to that which most characterizes their burger bar…their buns come in an array of colours! Tired of the same old bocadillos? LA STRADA Named after the legendary Fellini film, ‘La Strada’ has deep roots in Valencia. Back in 1978, the Sicillian Angelo started one of the first authentic Italian pizzerias in this fair city. His extrovert son Calogero was born in Sicily but brought up here in Spain from the age of two and is the long-term owner of La Strada restaurante. His mother is Spanish and father is Italian, so you are getting the best of both worlds in terms of culinary knowledge, experience and a warm welcome too! We last popped by on a fairly busy Thursday night in the old town. Just a stone’s throw from Torres de Quart in the historic centre, ‘La Strada’ has been serving customers since 2001 and the ‘24/7 Valencia’ team have seen it evolve over the years. Renowned for their Anitpasti and tapas Italiane, we asked our kindly & helpful head waiter Jesus to choose typical dishes for us. We started off by savouring an eye-catching ‘Involtini de Melanzane e Zucchine,’ which was rolls of eggplant with ham, cheese and courgette whose fresh ingredients combined lovingly. It was a wonderful starter and a good sign of things to come…

To accompany our dinner for two, we were recommended the ‘Montepluciano D’Abruzzo’ which was quite earthy and somewhat hearty and proved to be a good choice for our supper. They have Italian wines from many regions of the country, including Toscana, Romagna, Veneto, Piamonte and Lazio with a helpful ‘map wine menu’ of the country to help guide you… Our pizza dish was a bit different from the norm. Owner Calogero reminded us that, from a purist’s point of view, classic pizzas should never have fruit in them but progress is progress so we were presented with a ‘Bianca con Pera,’ which was an absolutely delicious and very generous pizza with pear, gorgonzola and mozzarella cheese. It was a joy to eat and very tasty with the fruit giving a wonderfully light touch and contrast to the filling cheeses and light & crunchy pastry base. This dish was really made with a lot of love. Very memorable! It was this writer’s favourite dish of the night… We were next presented with ‘Mediaglinoi in Salsa Di Pignoli’ which were ‘Medallions’ with funghiporcini, mascarpone cheese, a cream sal-

sa with a touch of tomato and pine nuts. It was incredibly filling and a very rich dish, and perhaps one for veritable connoisseurs of Italian cuisine. This writer’s partner is partly of Italian descent and she found the dish to be “exquisite”. For a dessert, rather than go for their well-known and fondly popular Tiramisu or Pannacota we were recommended the Cannoli Siciliano, which was a distinctive puff pastry with a delicate combination of sugary ricotta and candied fruit. It was a tasty yet light way to end the evening…

MAR D´AMURA EL ARENAL

The ‘24/7 Valencia’ team have had some really memorable nights of delicious dining & superb live music at ‘Mar d’Amura’ since it opened last summer. This place has quality written all over it and attracts an appreciative crowd and is refreshingly integrated with the district. Set in the heart of the Cabanyal district, it is run by Maria de Miguel, a popular local of this still humble barrio. Many will know her from having run the legendary live music venue ‘Café Murnau’ in the past. Maria has brought plenty of experience with her with this newish, long-term project at ‘Mar d’Amura’… that is really broad in scope. “The Live flamenco-jazz fusion every Wednesday at Mar d’Amura was born in October 2017, during the presentation of the new record “Mediterraníes” by Albert Sanz. A post-gig jam session started with other jazz musicians including Roqui Albero, Javi Forner, David Gadea and Vicent Macián. Some flamenco singers, including Vicente y Juan Torres (canto), Ramón Giménez (canto) and Johnny Bizárraga joined in. They are local lads from Cabanyal, starting out in the world of flamenco. This special fusion of jazz and flamenco really took off that night and the results have been fantastic ever since.

Dig the tasty octopus! The philosophy of the kitchen is market produce, with seasonal products used in Valencian & Mediterranean cuisine and the gastronomy of the Cabanyal. It is also inspired by Moroccan recipes. Indeed, Salva is their chef from Valencia and Lofti is their chef from Morocco. The dishes are elaborate, artistically presented and healthy and good value, considering the quality of the ingredients. Their desserts are 100% homemade. From Monday to Friday, they have a daily midday menu for 9.50€ and they always have options for vegans, vegetarians and gluten-free dishes too. FOOD BY HELEN WESTWATER OF LA OLA FRESCA ARTICHOKES AND FRENCH PISSALADIER TART

There are some vegetable that are beautiful to look at, but when it comes to preparing them it can seem too much of a lengthy process. The aptly named artichoke is a good example. Arty certainly, but can cause some procrastination or blocks when it comes to preparing them! Really, it’s not as difficult as it seems and once they are prepared you can bottle them in oil so they are ready to use at any given moment. With the added bonus of the artichoke-infused oil. Artichokes come into season conveniently in January. Suitably for post-Christmas, they are known as liver cleansers with high levels of potassium to help with hangovers and can also lower cholesterol. So without more ado here is how to prepare your artichokes. Prepare a bowl of water with juice of half a lemon squeezed in. Retain the other half to rub the artichoke leaves with, as you go along, to prevent discoloration. Remove the lower petals, which are small or discoloured. Cut the stems and retain. Cut off top quarter of the tips. If it is a large artichoke you can then access the furry part inside with a spoon or knife to remove it. Place the prepared artichoke in the lemon water. Sadly, you will have just missed the Benicarló Artichoke Festival (Festa de la Carxofa) held yearly in January, but here are a few ideas of how to cook and use your artichokes.

Firstly, with young more delicate artichokes you can use the inner part, sliced finely, as a carpaccio simply doused with lemon or another delicious option is to grill directly from raw in slices. Otherwise, I would recommend steaming above an inch or two of boiling water for about 25 to 40 minutes. They are ready when you can remove a petal near the centre easily. Either eat immediately with utterly buttery hollandaise sauce (well they do lower cholesterol!) or more healthy vegenaise. You can also keep them in olive oil and use for salads or in this case as our topping with caramelized onions and tomate base for the French answer to pizza, ‘Pissaladier.’ This is taken from one of my favourite cook books, ‘The Secret of French Home Cooking’; by Marie-Pierre Moine.

Method In a food processor, whizz the flour and butter together with a pinch of salt. Add the cream cheese and season with pepper and whizz again until the dough comes together. Wrap in cling film and chill for at least half an hour. Pre-heat the oven to 190c/375F gas 5. Oil a large baking sheet. Roll out the pastry thinly on a floured board and spread on to the baking sheet. Prick with a fork in several places then sprinkle with the Parmesan. Spread the tomate sauce over the prepared dough, followed by the

cooked onions. Bake for about 20 minutes. Remove from oven then turn the oven up to 200C/400F/gas mark 6. Place the artichoke halves evenly on the pissaladier and bake for a further 10 minutes. Remove from the oven and serve with a little olive oil and sea salt. VALENCIA HIT THE WALL Valencia is fast becoming one of the major cities of Europe for marathon running and the club’s football club have got into the act with a winter blip in their league campaign that has all the characteristics of the marathon phenomena known as “hitting the wall.” A loss of energy and fatigue, along with a dip in form for Los Che midway through their league ordeal are synonymous with the marathon runner’s struggles, as they aim to finish their race. Valencia CF have lost five of their eight league games in December and January, allowing the chasing pack to close on them and jeopardise their chances of an automatic Champions League place come the end of the season. December was a very unproductive month for the club, with defeats away at Getafe and Eibar and then a home loss against local rivals Villarreal. A hard fought win over struggling Celta Vigo at the Mestalla gave Los Che the only league points

collected as the winter league break came to their rescue. With the New Year came the re-opening of the transfer window for a month and the obligatory rumours of coming and goings at Valencia in the European press. Within days, Wolves had beaten Real Madrid for the signature of contract rebel Rafa Mir and Marcelino had acquired the talented Luciano Vietto, on loan to the squad from Atlético Madrid. Valencia then increased their numbers by going back to Arsenal once again to add Gabriel Paulista’s former team mate Francis Coquelin to their ranks. Nacho Gil was allowed to go out on loan to Las Palmas to gain further first team experience. Perhaps the best deals the club did were to retain the services of Geoffrey Kondogbia and Gonçalo Guedes. Signed on loan at the start of the season, there were fears that both may be recalled after their impressive form to Inter Milan and Paris Saint-Germain respectively.

As yet Valencia have not been able to get the pair on permanent deals but they do seem to have secured their services for the remainder of this season’s campaign, which can only help the club’s efforts to secure that prestigious Champions League spot. When the winter break was completed Valencia started with a welcome win, despite a lacklustre performance, at the Mestalla against Girona. Promoted last year behind Levante, the Catalans have been one of the surprise packages of La Liga this season. Their physical presence, from goalkeeper to striker proved a worthy adversary to Valencia’s skill and guile. The visitors took the lead in the eighth minute through Portu. The former Valencia star met a cross at the near post and glanced his header out of the reach of Neto. His muted celebration was respected by the stadium, especially after the recent way Jordi Alba had reacted when securing the equaliser for Barcelona. Valencia Football Photos © Valencia CF

Stung into the action by Girona’s early lead, Valencia launched wave after wave of attacks. They were finally rewarded midway through the first half when Ramalho put through his own goal, trying to defend a tantalising cross from Guedes. The winner came just after the interval from the penalty spot. Parejo converted the kick after Gaya had been pulled down right on the by-line by a Girona defender. Both sides had good chances to add to their goal tally but the game ended with a 2-1 victory to Los Che. Valencia came away victorious from La Riazor by the same score the following week thanks to goals from Guedes and Moreno, leaving Deportivo still occupying one of the relegation places. An insipid performance in the Canary Islands led to a 2-1 defeat for Valencia against Las Palmas. Then, at the end of January, came the mouth-watering encounter at the Mestalla against Real Madrid. Madrid arrived wounded after their surprising Copa Del Rey defeat at the hands of the “cucumber growers” Leganes.

The sold out crowd saw Madrid two goals to the good at the interval thanks to two Ronaldo penalty kicks. Both decisions would have not been given by many of the other La Liga referees and at the half-time whistle Javier Estrada Fernandez was greeted with a resounding chorus of boos from the Mestalla faithful. Valencia came back into the game on the hour mark when Santi Mina converted a header direct from a corner. A resurgent crowd roared the home side on for an equaliser. With the game progressing into the final quarter the home side began to take more and more risks at the back but with six minutes to go disaster struck when Madrid’s left back Marcelo converted a swift counter attack. To add further misery to the majority of the fans, Toni Kroos added a fourth just before the end to give the score a very deceiving look. The Valencia players received a standing ovation as they left the pitch and they remain in third place in La Liga despite the loss. At the beginning of the season 95% of the fans would have been more than happy to be sitting above Real

Madrid and in a Champions League spot at the start of February. What is even more exciting for the fans is the team have a great chance of domestic silverware, something they have not achieved since 2008. That year they beat Getafe in the Copa Del Rey and the same silverware could have Valencia’s name on it come May. A comprehensive win against Las Palmas in the last sixteen in December was followed by a two-legged win on penalties against Alaves. Jaume was the hero for Los Che saving two of the Alaves spot kicks in the penalty shoot out that Valencia won 3-2. The reward for that victory is a semi-final with Barcelona over two legs. If the club can overcome that hurdle, then Leganes or Sevilla will await them in the final. Across the city, Levante’s indifferent form and inability to gain points on home soil continues to be a worry and has dragged them into a relegation dogfight. A point earned at fellow strugglers Deportivo de La Coruña in Galicia, when being two goals down with just ten minutes left, could be crucial in the final standings at the end of the season.

With Levante having to play Valencia and Real Madrid in February, the home game against Betis and the away encounter at Alaves could be the club’s best chance of gaining points next month. John Howden

Valencia was a Muslim town for well over 500 years. The Moors ruled over a prosperous expanding city, but 780 years on how much of their legacy remains? David Rhead and Jose Marin try to find out: “What did the Moors ever do for us?” The great Moorish General, Tariq Ibn Ziyad, a former slave who had risen through the ranks and had already conquered most of Southern and central Spain with a small but fiercely loyal army of around 7,000 men, took control of the city of Valencia in around 714 (the exact date is unclear). No blood was shed as Valencia’s Visigoth governor Agnescio didn’t fancy his chances against the great Tariq and decided to hand the city over peacefully in return for Moorish assurances to respect the religion, customs and personal property of the citizens. Tariq named Abdulcacer al Hudzali as the first governor of “Balansiya”, which was to become one of the pearls of Al-Andalus.

Thus began a rule of five centuries until Jaume I reconquered the city in 1238. For many of the inhabitants at the time, the Moorish occupation would have come as a relief from the tyranny and bigotry of the Goth ruling classes who lived in luxury (presumably prancing around in too much eye make up, lacquered hair, black clothes and skinny jeans) while the rest of the country was on its knees. Under the more tolerant, enlightened and technologically advanced Muslims the once poverty-stricken city prospered. Their most obvious and celebrated legacy is the “Huerta”. The agricultural lands around the city with their elaborate irrigation systems were established in the ninth century by the Moorish Kings, vastly improving on an existing Roman system. They have been at the heart of the Valencian economy, culture and folklore ever since. The irrigation channels and pipelines, built by Abderraman III and his ancestors, converted pre-

viously barren dust piles into fertile land. Bringing technology used in the driest parts of North Africa, the Moors redirected and siphoned off all the water they could find to the extent that the two local rivers, the Guadalaviar “the white river (the modern day Turia) and the Jucar “the ferocious” arrived to the sea more or less dry…with all their water channelled off to irrigate the land. Hakam II set up the “Tribunal de las Aguas, which still sits today every Thursday at the door of Valencia Cathedral, to govern the use of the irrigation system. New farming techniques and crops were introduced. Along with the olives and grapes that the Romans had planted, Valencia began producing sugar cane, pulses, fruit, almonds and vegetables in abundance. Valencian rice was exported all over the peninsula. The prosperity brought by agriculture lead in turn to the development of a class of craftsmen and tradesmen in the city who established indus-

tries which are now considered to be traditionally Valencian and have played an essential role in the history and economy of the city. Furniture making, silk production and ceramics in Paterna and Manises can all trace their roots back to this period of Moorish rule. The city was now ripe for expansion and, during the tenth century, the old Roman walls were knocked down and the city was almost entirely rebuilt. The vast majority of what was built at this time has long since disappeared but if you look closely, especially in the Barrio Carmen and the Ciutat Vella; evidence of the Moorish reconstruction of the city is all around. Part of the Moorish walls can be seen in the façade of the Iglesia del Temple (across the river from the Viveros gardens), in the entrance of the old University in Calle Comedias, under the Plaza Tossal, and inside some of the buildings along the Calle Caballeros (which unfortunately are no longer open to the public). It is most evident at the Portal de Valldigna, in Calle Salinas, an opening in the Moorish walls made in the fifteenth century to connect the adjacent streets, and the Plaza del Angel where you can see a section of the wall and a tower, which was part of a gateway to the city. Perhaps, however, more than actual buildings the most enduring architectural legacy of Moorish Valencia is in the layout of the oldest parts of the city which follows the Moori-

sh design of labyrinthine, narrow, winding streets (providing shade from the midday sun) turning back on themselves or coming to a dead end. With the exception of the longer straight thoroughfares which lead to the Great Mosque (the modern day calles de Serranos, el Mar, Caballeros and San Vicente) each street was inhabited by members of the same community of tradesmen or even the same family leading to nowhere in particular or winding round to “Azutcats” or cul de sacs. Anybody who has lost their bearings stumbling around the Carmen after a few too many Aguas de Valencia will readily testify to the lasting influence of the chaotic Moorish town planners. Balansiya had two bridges over the Guadalaviar (the Turia river) where the Serranos and Trinidad bridges stand today. There were a number of mosques which were later converted into Christian churches by Jaume I. The Great Mosque was on the site of today’s cathedral and many other Valencian churches such as San Juan del Hospital, Santa Catalina and San Valero in Ruzafa were once Mosques. As a clear indication of the religious tolerance of the Moorish kings, there was also a synagogue in the Xerea and a Christian church, San Vicente de la Roqueta, which still remains on the Plaza de España, the oldest church in the city. Not all citizens were quite as tolerant as their Muslim rulers; the Moorish government had to intervene on a number of occasions when the Christians attacked the Jewish Community. There were also more than twenty public baths which fell into disuse after the Moors had left. During Christian rule in the middle ages when people only had a bath once or twice in their life when they got married and when they got baptised. The only surviving Moorish baths are the recently restored Baños del Almirante in Plaza de Napoles y Sicillia.

Just like their modern day counterparts, Valencians under Muslim rule jumped at the chance to get off to the country at any opportunity especially during the summer months. Whereas nowadays people head out to their “pueblos”, to the beach or up to the mountains, under the Moors the countryside was closer to home. “Munyas” or country retreats were set up within a few kilometres of the city walls, many of which would today be within the city’s boundaries. There were famous Munyas near the channels of Mestalla and Algiros and the royal retreat was where the Viveros gardens are now. Further up the river, near the Escuela official de Idiomas the gateway to the country retreat of Princess Zaydia still stands on a roundabout by the side of the main drag. Once a quiet place to get away from it all, it is now surrounded by sixties apartment blocks and heavy traffic. One of the most famous Munyas was Ruzafa, built for Prince Omeya Abd Allah al Balansi whose lands extended throughout the region and into Murcia and Catalonia. As well as the landscape and make up of Valencia, the Moors left their mark on many aspects of Valencian life. Twenty five per cent of words in Spanish (like “aceite” and “alfombra”) have Moorish roots, place names like Benidorm or Albufera and surnames like Albelda or Alborch also come directly from ancient Arabic. Horchata, turron, oranges, rice and, some claim, customs such as shared dishes like paella and Valencia’s bustling street life can also be traced back to the Moorish way of life. Even that most Valencian of expressions “Xe!” has its roots in Arabic. The Chinese invented paper and the Moors introduced paper to Europe via a paper mill in Xativa, Valencia. That’s quite a legacy.

VALENCIA WINES

February is on the way and with it ‘San Valentín’. This month we recommend some wines to enjoy with your partner…but, of course, they can also be drunk at any time! We start with four Valencian cavas, three rosados and a white as most people associate cava with a romantic celebration! Hispano Suizas is a bodega in El Pontón on the outskirts of Requena and produces the most highly rated Rosado in Spain, its Pinot Noir is called ‘Tantum Ergo’. It regularly wins awards both internationally and nationally, including best Bodega! A pale rose colour with fine persistent bubbles, this is quite powerful on the nose with intense red fruits and hints of vanilla from its fermentation in oak barrels. Full bodied on entry with creamy notes, smooth with plenty of ripe red fruit flavours (such as cherry) and touches of vanilla in the finish. Extremely elegant and very good with food.

Our second recommendation is Pago de Tharsys Millesimé Rosado from the Garnacha variety. Only made in the best years, this Rosado is noted for its fruit. The bodega is on the road from Requena to San Antonio and has a shop and visitor centre and has just posted excellent results with sales up 20%. It is also producing an excellent range of Ecological wines. On the nose, this dusky pink cava has elegant and fruity aromas with blood grapefruit and forest strawberries. Excellent on the palate with well integrated extremely fine bubbles. Long satisfying finish. Our next Rosada Cava is Dominio de la Vega Reserva Especial Rosé also from Pinot Noir. Noted for their Reserve cavas, Dominio de la Vega is in the village of San Antonio. A vintage cava (as are the others) it is pale rose with salmon notes in colour and with fine persistent bubbles. At VÍ Vid, we love the fresh red fruit

with citrus skins and violet notes over a deep base of brioche and patisserie on the nose and its fresh attack with lots of well integrated bubbles in red fruit flavours. We regularly use this wine in our tastings. Good with food but excellent on its own too! For those who are happier with a white cava we suggest Privee 18 Brut Nature Reserva from Bodegas Vegamar. A cava made to accompany ibéricos, aged sheeps’ cheeses and jamón…it is a blend of Macabeo and Chardonnay. The wine is made for Vegamar by UVÉ, their partners. Pale yellow with fine bubbles, elegant, clean and bright. On the nose, green apple fruit with patisserie and hints of mocha coffee. In the mouth full, round, elegant with good bite and body and a long satisfying finish. One of our favourite white wines for a celebration is Bodegas Pasiego, Suertes a blend of Macabeo and Sauvignon Blanc.

Pasiego in the village of Sinarcas is a bodega we have tasted at regularly for a few years. Artisan wines of very high quality are made here in what is the last of the towns in DO Utiel-Requena before the border with La Mancha. Pale yellow with green flashes, clean and bright. Floral on the nose with tropical fruit notes and good intensity. In the mouth it has good fruit flavour, well balanced acidity and a long finish. Ideal with fish as well as pasta and white meat dishes.

with strawberry and raspberry, bubble gum. Fresh on entry, balanced with good volume, red fruit flavours and citric notes and a long finish. And don’t worry, if the 2016 is now sold out the 2017 is better! VÍ Vid does not often step outside the Valencian Community to recommend a wine but this is an exception.

Gewurtztraminer 2016, from Baron D´Alba, in Les Useres, Castellon would be a fabulous choice for a romantic tryst! On the nose it has rose petal, honeysuckle, spice and a hint of vanilla. In the mouth, light on entry, then the spice emerges, rich, ripe fruit, full, apricot and apricot stone, it is a wine which is pale yellow, clean and bright.

Bodegas Nabal is a project run by Mapi Melado Soriano a young Valencian winemaker with a bright future ahead of her! Having already won an award for her first wine we took the opportunity to show, as a guest wine, her Tempranillo Crianza at one of our recent tastings. Nabal is in the Ribera del Duero.The wine is medium to deep bodied cherry with long legs. On the nose, oak and vanilla are balanced nicely with soft elegant, ripe, blackberry, zarzamora fruit. In the mouth round, ripe fruit, blackberry, with soft tannins, vanilla and oak all balanced perfectly.

Latorré Parreño 2016, Rosado Bobal is an old favourite from this bodega in Venta del Moro. This vintage is a mid-range, rose and strawberry colour with good legs. Intense mature fruit on the nose, typically Bobal

From the Anecoop bodega at Cheste and named best dessert wine in an International competition, Sol de Reymos is a concentrated Moscatel wine made in a slightly different manner to normal mistelas.

Firstly the grapes are picked riper than usual and then partially fermented to about 4.5%ABV. Fermentation is then stopped by the addition of neat alcohol leaving a wine with a natural sugar content of 120gm per litre. Deep gold in colour, gold flashes, clean, very bright, viscous, long very slow legs. On the nose notes of barrica, orange peel and spice. In the mouth rich, round, filling the mouth, a little toast from the barrica, elegant with a little coffee in the evolution. Happy Valentines!

BESARABIA 1. What are the origins and influences of Besarabia? Besarabia was born out of the chance meeting of Eva and myself (Heidi). We live only 8 kms from each other but met for the first time strangely through my husband, as she thought he was teaching English and she was looking for English lessons (actually he was teaching an English speaking art class!). We then met again at a party (with instruments) where we decided to improvise something together and it was musical love at first (second) sight! Later we thought it would be good to have a bass player in the group and Eva had met Jaume on a percussion course and he said he played bass as well. We had already started playing some Bulgarian dances in very complicated rhythms so it was extremely useful to have someone who was a bass player AND a percussionist. Then it turned out he played even more instruments, such as the Cretan lute, oud and saz, so now he’s more or less eliminated the bass from the group as he prefers playing the other instruments! (although he does still play it on the CD). Somehow we were attracted to the repertoire from the Balkans, Klez-

mer and the Mediterranean, partly due to the instruments we play, but also more importantly by the music itself. We love the energy, the crazy rhythms and the emotion of this music and the fact that it is music that doesn’t see borders: you’ll often find the same piece cropping up in Greece or Turkey or Bosnia or wherever (as in the tune Uskudara on our CD). We like to mix everything together from this very exciting part of the world. Now, in our own compositions, we’ve started doing the same, letting all our influences come together to create something new. 2. Could you tell us a bit about each musician in the trio? Heidi Erbrich studied baroque violin at the Royal Academy of Music in London and the Sweelink Conservatory in Amsterdam. She has played with orchestras and early music ensembles throughout Europe and currently is joint leader of the baroque orchestra Florilegium Musicum in The Netherlands and member of the chamber music group In Stil Moderno. She also loves playing many other styles of music and has played in groups playing Jazz, Rock, Cuban and Funk etc. She teaches free improvisation workshops in Spain and

the Netherlands. Jaume Pallardó began his musical life at the Centro Instructivo de Arte y Cultura in La Vall d’Ulxó with the clarinet. He received his degree at the Conservatory of La Vall d’Uixó. Later he started studying the electric bass with Jose Miguel Fenollosa and Kodi and initiated his own bands La Big Bong Band and Crim(mental). Later on, he became interested in traditional music and has studied instruments such as the tombak with Pedram Khavarzamini and Diego López, bendir and riq with Vassilis Sarkis, the lute with Stelios Petrakis and saz with Efrén Lopez. Presently he plays with various groups such as Difonies jazz combo, La Banda del Pepo and Udiva. Eva Domingo, actress and musician, started to study traditional music relatively late on in her career. After finishing her theatre studies she founded her own music/theatre group Rodamons-Trencaclosques with whom she started developing an interest in renaissance and medieval music. She recorded several albums with them and played numerous concerts all around Spain. In recent years she has become increasingly interested in music

from Andalusia, classical Arab music, and music from Egypt, Iran and the Balkan regions. She has studied with Joansa Maravilla, Diego López, Pedram Khavarzamini and Bijam Cheminari. Currently, besides Besarabia, she is working on various theatre projects and teaching percussion, whilst also developing new techniques for herself, such as body percussion. 3. How do you find Valencia as a place to live and work as a musician? Valencia is an interesting place for musicians. On the one hand it’s fairly small and so therefore quite limited, but on the other hand there are many vibrant places with live music to play at and really quite a lot of festivals sympathetic to our music (particularly since the change of government in Valencia..). We have had the luxury that in the early days we were able to play a lot of gigs in cafes, to find our “musical feet”, so to speak, and now we have been given the opportunity to play in more established festivals and series of concerts, such as recently in Etnomúsic tardor in the Beneficiencia or the festival Mostra Viva del Mediterrani in the Palau last year. However, we still also really enjoy playing in the smaller places in Valencia as it is more intimate and we can try out new repertoire.

4. Could you tell us a bit about each track on your new album, ‘Ritmos , trenzas y gatos’? The first track, ‘Sandansko’, along with ‘Larzasko Horo’ and ‘Cetvorno Sopskp Horo’ are traditional Bulgarian dances. ‘Cau la ma’ is a song written by Eva, dedicated to the dreadful plight of the refugees. It was inspired by the photo of the dead child on the beach. It goes from complete despair to some kind of hope in the future. ‘Soñando Blue Blau’ is a tune composed by Heidi, inspired by a dream she had one night..... ‘Doyna’, ‘Bukoviner Freylekhs’ and ‘Danza de Los Titiriteros’ are all traditional Klezmer tunes. Doyna is basically an improvised piece, for the musicians to set the scene at the start of the wedding. We renamed the third tune as a homage to the titiriteros (puppeteers) who were put in prison in Madrid a couple of years ago, our anthem for the freedom of speech. ‘Kerem Eyle’ is a song from Serbia, with a title in Turkish and words in Romani, the gypsy language. A fine example of crossing cultures and borders. Les Mones Balcániques is a composition of Jaume, dedicated to the two

other group members..... the Balkan monkeys! ‘Uskudar’, as already mentioned earlier, is a traditional tune that appears in many different Balkan countries, each claiming it to be their own and putting their own lyrics to the music. We decided to personalise it as well so Jaume wrote his own lyrics to the music in Valencian, his mother tongue. ‘Autumn in Prague’ is another composition of Heidi's, written indeed in Prague, in autumn, one day a long time ago...... We finish the CD with a piece called ‘Naz Bari’ from Azerbaijan, with words at the end from a poem from Yunus Enré (1241 -1320), a mystic and poet from Anatolia, words that are still very relevant today. 5. What are your plans for 2018? We are playing 15th February at Mar d’Amura and 25th February at La Pilona, both places situated in Cabanyal. Concert Besarabia Feb 10 www.ojala-lliria.com 9th April we will be playing in the series “Cicle Los lunes concierto” in the Casino Antiguo in Castellon.
