Contents Welcome to Brighton & Hove Welcome to Spring! No it’s true … no doubt about it … the sun is out and we’re replacing our coats for jackets. I have also been reliably informed that Summer is on its way as you will see in this issue of Brighton Visitor. We’ve been rushing around collating events from Brighton but we’ve also gone far and wide across Sussex to tempt you to venture further and experience more. Festivals, both musical, theatrical and literary, are also upon us. The only problem you’ll have is deciding what you want to see and when. So off you go, start planning, before you miss out.

Brighton Marathon Weekend Fri 7th to Sun 9th April Throughout Brighton I salute all involved. Shopping North Laine Probably the most lively area of Brighton with its quirky shops where you’ll find vintage clothes, furniture and just about anything nestling alongside tattoo and piercing parlours, independent bars, coffee shops and restaurants. At the end of Kensington Gardens you’ll regularly find remarkably good buskers to linger and listen to for a while. It is also a lively residential area mix of folk who’ve lived there for generations boosted by young professionals and commuters.

Kemp Town Considered to be the LGBT centre of Brighton it has now developed into a home to a veritable melting pot of many nations who have found their way to this seaside haven. This has led to an ever growing, bustling area of local shops restaurants and pubs which have served this area’s rainbow of residents since the 18th century. When the sun goes down Kemp Town becomes flypaper to visitors and Brightonians alike frequenting its many restaurants, bars and clubs.

Churchill Square And City Centre Brighton is host to all the ‘high street’ chain stores and this bustling area is where they are all situated. This area is packed full of tempting credit card melting opportunities with a plethora of cafes where you may also rest awhile. Churchill Square is a constantly updating shopping and food mall large enough to keep your interest for a couple of hours but not large enough to get lost in.

The Lanes

Seafront

Once the heart of the fishing town of Brighthelmstone, this historic quarter is the place to catch yourself something special. In this fabulous maze of twisting alleyways and twittens you’ll find an extraordinary mix of antiques and jewellery shops alongside independant contemporary and designer fashion boutiques. With the odd busker popping up here and there to serenade your way and a plethora of restaurants and coffee shops you can happily spend many days exploring.

Kings Road Arches were historically used by the fishing community whose fishing boats still work out of the beach. As well as the fishing museum the many arches have been developed into a home to art galleries and crafts of all kinds selling the work of local artists. After dark the area transforms into the hub of nightlife with many clubs and bars, throbbing to the accompaniment of live music venues.

Hove

Marina

George Street and New Church Road has more of a ‘local’ feel to it; an appealing village unique atmosphere of tired opulence and a very popular area for overseas visitors. Here you’ll find a profusion of individual shops of all kinds including delis, interior design, organic greengrocers, clothes designers alongside smaller high street basics. It is also regular home to a French market selling a variety of locally grown produce.

Whereas this is still a working marina there is also much more of a laid back atmosphere here. The emphasis is upon entertainment as much as shopping in its independent shops and supermarket. A casino, sports club, cinema complex, bowling alley, restaurants and bars nestle together. Wander along the boardwalk where you can linger over a coffee and/or meal whilst people watching and gazing out to sea.

It’s a Monday night in mid March and after a full on weekend and a Monday slogging in the office, I actually felt like just climbing into bed, but ‘date night’ had been planned and Divino Wine Bar was calling. What used to be The Green House, is now completely refurbished to a high modern standard with a wonderful ambience. As soon as we arrived we noticed other ‘daters’ and this coupled with the soothing-without-being-cheesy background music, meant that we instantly felt we had chosen the right venue. The chef - Vincenzo from ‘Napoli’ introduced himself and coming from a long line of great cooks I knew we were in for a treat! To start I had delicious Brighton Visitor Spring / Summer 2017

scallops, my partner had king prawns. Both were satisfying to the pallet and the presentation of a very high standard. The perfectly timed main course followed. I had Sea Bass and my partner Rib Eye Steak, both dishes served on a bed of spring vegetables. The steak was drizzled in a homemade peppercorn sauce; cooked to my partner’s requirements and he said it was by far the best steak he had had in a long time. My Sea Bass was fresh, cooked to perfection and the little extra dipping oil was a nice touch. (Home made with lemon, garlic and parsley) Desserts were amazing - the white chocolate soufflé for me and my partner opted for sticky toffee pudding - simply

divine! We followed this with delicious mocktails as recommended by our waitress, the lovely Bianca. We were really impressed with Divino. The detailed presentation, the food, the drinks and the service were all amazing. Fine dining at affordable prices in the heart of Hove. At weekends there is even a club downstairs of you fancy a boogie afterwards! If you want to take the family Divino are happy to accommodate children and have a huge garden. I will certainly be heading there again this spring! I highly recommend Divino you won’t be disappointed - five stars. Liz Gold
