The Cass Foundation was set up in 1992 by visionary, philanthropist Wilfred Cass, on land that was originally part of the Goodwood Estate. The 2016 commission, ‘A Beautiful Disorder’, from 18 Chinese artists is most definitely one of the most daring, full of social and political undertones. ‘Escape’ (My family History) by Li Jinghu, refers to the constraints of growing up and living in China. Two high walled fences with spot lights standing a few metres apart are clearly universal symbols of restraint and division. Also resonating with me is Lu Pingyan’s ‘Ghost Trap’. A young man finds himself lost in the grounds of Cass itself where he is trapped overnight. As night falls, he sees all kinds of strange and horrifying things, which could be illusions caused by the various sculptures in the park or ghosts of these sculptures attempting to make him stay forever. The final sculptural works exhibited are two

to seeing (hoping that they haven’t been sold on or loaned out somewhere). This is purely selfish of me of course because art in all its forms should be shared. Triton III by Bryan Kneale, still gives me such joy. This large sheet sculpture soaks up the reflections of its environment, mirroring blue sky and landscape that is ever changing. I could just sit and look at this piece all day.
You don’t have to be an art buff to enjoy the experience of this open-air gallery. Sometimes you might not see another soul giving you, as a visitor a feeling of open, unobtrusive space. It’s a joy to bring the kids here, seeing them free and inspired. The imagination has no limits.

I think I can confidently say that if you live in East Sussex you have probably visited Drusillas Park at least once, if not multiple times. I worked out on my recent visit that I have in fact been taking my kids ranging from six to 18, for the best part of 16 years. I never tire of this attraction, if anything I look forward to seeing some of the beautiful species there including Serval cats, Karimba and Ninja. What many visitors don’t realise when they visit, is the hard work and effort that it takes to manage the zoo and to maintain such high standards. The Smith family who own Drusillas are really passionate about giving their customers a fantastic and memorable experience. Also worth mentioning, the Zoo are members of numerous animal conservation and breeding programs and you can visit with peace of mind that these animals are really being cared for.

Shopping North Laine Probably the most lively area of Brighton with its quirky shops where you’ll find vintage clothes, furniture and just about anything nestling alongside tattoo and piercing parlours, independent bars, coffee shops and restaurants. At the end of Kensington Gardens you’ll regularly find remarkably good buskers to linger and listen to for a while. It is also a lively residential area mix of folk who’ve lived there for generations boosted by young professionals and commuters.
Kemp Town Considered to be the LGBT centre of Brighton it has now developed into a home to a veritable melting pot of many nations who have found their way to this seaside haven. This has led to an ever growing, bustling area of local shops restaurants and pubs which have served this area’s rainbow of residents since the 18th century. When the sun goes down Kemp Town becomes flypaper to visitors and Brightonians alike frequenting its many restaurants, bars and clubs.
Churchill Square And City Centre Brighton is host to all the ‘high street’ chain stores and this bustling area is where they are all situated. This area is packed full of tempting credit card melting opportunities with a plethora of cafes where you may also rest awhile. Churchill Square is a constantly updating shopping and food mall large enough to keep your interest for a couple of hours but not large enough to get lost in.
The Lanes
Seafront
Once the heart of the fishing town of Brighthelmstone, this historic quarter is the place to catch yourself something special. In this fabulous maze of twisting alleyways and twittens you’ll find an extraordinary mix of antiques and jewellery shops alongside independant contemporary and designer fashion boutiques. With the odd busker popping up here and there to serenade your way and a plethora of restaurants and coffee shops you can happily spend many days exploring.
Kings Road Arches were historically used by the fishing community whose fishing boats still work out of the beach. As well as the fishing museum the many arches have been developed into a home to art galleries and crafts of all kinds selling the work of local artists. After dark the area transforms into the hub of nightlife with many clubs and bars, throbbing to the accompaniment of live music venues.
Hove
Marina
George Street and New Church Road has more of a ‘local’ feel to it; an appealing village unique atmosphere of tired opulence and a very popular area for overseas visitors. Here you’ll find a profusion of individual shops of all kinds including delis, interior design, organic greengrocers, clothes designers alongside smaller high street basics. It is also regular home to a French market selling a variety of locally grown produce.
Whereas this is still a working marina there is also much more of a laid back atmosphere here. The emphasis is upon entertainment as much as shopping in its independent shops and supermarket. A casino, sports club, cinema complex, bowling alley, restaurants and bars nestle together. Wander along the boardwalk where you can linger over a coffee and/or meal whilst people watching and gazing out to sea.

Renowned for good food, friendly service and a varied menu – Buddies is waiting for you any time of day or night. From its famous all day breakfast to a large selection of pasta dishes, delicious pizzas, mouth watering T-bone steaks to its seafood platter, Buddies has it all. Fancy something lighter? Then they do a terrific range of fresh salads or omelettes with garnish. They also offer a fantastic selection of burgers from a plain
hamburger to thousand island burger or you could even be adventurous and opt for one of their Hawaiian or chilli burgers for something a bit different. Sunday lunch is always a big attraction and you’ll have the choice of a set menu from £8.50 per person. There’s a special kids’ menu with smaller portions at fantastic prices. Buddies welcome all parties of people from birthdays to hen and stag events and students get an amazing 20% off food Sunday to Thursday if they show their NUS card (except bank holidays and Christmas Day). Buddies is also a fully licensed bar so pop in if you fancy drinks on the way to a night out or even on your way home for a nightcap. buddies24hour.net
