What We Drank A Gin Garden Spritz and Whiskey Pacharan Manhattan concocted by resident barman Tom. I was impressed by his knowledge of Gins! House Champagne, Prudomme from grower Christophe Mignon. Prudomme is organic, biodynamic and exclusive to Drakes in Brighton. What We Ate Starters We opted for the Tian Selsey Crab and Beetroot Goat Cheese Ravioli. I was blown away by the exquisite presentation! Mains For the mains my guest chose dry aged Fillet of Beef, with Horseradish and chargrilled Roscoff onion, Romanesco and Chateaubriand sauce. The beef was flavorsome and tender. Meanwhile, my black garlic Risotto was cooked to perfection and had a remarkable depth of richness as this dish should have. Dessert We shared our desserts and ordered the Rose Soufflé served with Lychee Sorbet and Peach Cannelloni served with Schnapps ice cream. Both were utterly delicious. We opted for the three courses at £45.00 and this was plenty for us. Alternatively, you could order the two courses priced at £34.00 or the four courses at £56.00. The staff couldn’t be friendlier and what I love about Drakes is that you can comfortably pop in for a couple of hours and enjoy the dining experience. Sadly many restaurants overlook this all to often. I’ve made a second reservation and I’ll be hitting the bar on my next night out with friends for some decent cocktails. Venice is one of my favourite places in this world of ours and this night, shrouded in a Brighton sea mist, with streets damp underfoot felt as though I was transported back there. So imagine my delight at walking into Polpo finding that I was in a restaurant that could easilly sit in a venician backstreet. The welcome firstly from the barman then Pietro and his team was friendly, warm and assured. Entering through the bar you walk into the restaurant proper which opens out into this magical and cool space that feels as though it had existed for decades. The rustic tiled walls and wooden floor ooze confidence and trust. The air fills with the lively hubbub of fellow diners; groups of friends I settled into a delcious peach bellini and my guest a cool glass of rose whose pale pink gold sparkled in the candle light. Pietro guided us through the deceptively simple menu of tapas style sharing plates. You choose as many as your hunger demands. I say deceptive because those simple dishes explode with an intoxicating mixture of flavours. All the dishes we ordered were striking in their authentic taste but those of particular note were the chickpea, spinach and ricotta ‘meatballs’ in a fresh, piquant tomato sauce and the feather-light gorgeous gorgonzola and prosciutto pizzette. Let’s not forget the luscious chilli and garlic prawns whose dressing dribbled seductively down your fingers – exquisite. For dessert we indulged in the wondrous, perfectly named, dark chocolate salami studded with nuts and a strawberry gelato cone. Finally we finished our evening lingering over excellent coffee deciding that to appreciate Polpo you really need to experience it in person. Kairen Kemp Brighton Visitor Winter / Spring 2017

SHOPPING North Laine
The Lanes
Seafront
Probably the most lively area of Brighton with its quirky shops where you’ll find vintage clothes, furniture and just about anything nestling alongside tattoo and piercing parlours, independent bars, coffee shops and restaurants. At the end of Kensington Gardens you’ll regularly find remarkably good buskers to linger and listen to for a while. It is also a lively residential area mix of folk who’ve lived there for generations boosted by young professionals and commuters.
Once the heart of the fishing town of Brighthelmstone, this historic quarter is the place to catch yourself something special. In this fabulous maze of twisting alleyways and twittens you’ll find an extraordinary mix of antiques and jewellery shops alongside independant contemporary and designer fashion boutiques. With the odd busker popping up here and there to serenade your way and a plethora of restaurants and coffee shops you can happily spend many days exploring.
Kings Road Arches were historically used by the fishing community whose fishing boats still work out of the beach. As well as the fishing museum the many arches have been developed into a home to art galleries and crafts of all kinds selling the work of local artists. After dark the area transforms into the hub of nightlife with many clubs and bars, throbbing to the accompaniment of live music venues.
Kemp Town
Hove
Marina
Considered to be the LGBT centre of Brighton it has now developed into a home to a veritable melting pot of many nations who have found there way to this seaside haven. This has led to an ever growing, bustling area of local shops restaurants and pubs which have served this area’s rainbow of residents since the 18th century. When the sun goes down Kemp Town becomes flypaper to visitors and Brightonians alike frequenting its many restaurants, bars and clubs.
George Street and New Church Road has more of a ‘local’ feel to it; an appealing village unique atmosphere of tired opulence and a very popular area for overseas visitors. Here you’ll find a profusion of individual shops of all kinds including delis, interior design, organic greengrocers, clothes designers alongside smaller high street basics. It is also regular home to a French market selling a variety of locally grown produce.
Whereas this is still a working marina there is also much more of a laid back atmosphere here. The emphasis is upon entertainment as much as shopping in its independent shops and supermarket. A casino, sports club, cinema complex, bowling alley, restaurants and bars nestle together. Wander along the boardwalk where you can linger over a coffee and/or meal whilst people watching and gazing out to sea.

Brighton is host to all the ‘high street’ chain stores and this bustling area is where they are all situated. This area is packed full of tempting credit card melting opportunities with a plethora of cafes where you may also rest awhile. Churchill Square is a constantly updating shopping and food mall large enough to keep your interest for a couple of hours but not large enough to get lost in.

PUBS & COCKTAILS The Bar at Drakes Drakes Hotel 43-44 Marine Parade 01273 696934
New hands have taken over the proverbial wheel at Drakes Bar recently, and Tom is just the chap to introduce some new exciting cocktails to this stylish Bar. His charm and creativity are immediately evident with Cocktails being added to an exciting list every week. This slick space, with its impressive black granite bar and substantial selection of premium spirits on the back bar remain as ever. Just expect more… more passion, more excitement and more flair with each drink mixed and every cork pulled. Stocking an impressive selection of Old and New wines as well as some Sussex award winning Wines, ensures a good selection of varietals and vintages. The coffee selection is pretty good too and with a sea view to help you unwind, there are few better places to encourage a relaxing drink and perhaps just a touch of indulgence The Bar is open the public and is by no means reserved just for hotel guests. Come and see…and be seen at Drakes soon. drakesofbrighton.com

Trevor Arms The Street, Glynde 01273 858208 A country pub you don’t have to drive to is a rare thing but nestling in the sunset shadow of Mount Caburn, just over the bridge from Glynde railway station sits the Trevor Arms. On a sunny day the beer garden is hard to beat and after a wintry walk from Lewes, woodburners make this an inviting place to snuggle up in. facebook.com/ TheTrevorArmsGlynde
The Southover 58 Southover St, Brighton 01273 601419 For some reason the residential area of Hanover has been extremely wellendowed with pubs. Take Southover Street with 5 pubs aligned along it. Probably best to start at the top of the hill at The Southover. This cosy but spacious dark wood pub serves some of the best and most reasonably priced ale in the area and offers table tennis upstairs. southover.pub
Black Dove 74 St James’s Street, Brighton 01273 671119 Allegedly gets it’s name from an excommunicated pigeon that roosts in the chimney. From their stuffed duck-billed rabbit to the Black Cow vodka they serve which is made from cheese, this place shoots right through the other side of extraordinary. This quirkiness is neatly balanced by the expertise of the staff and the quality and selection of drinks they offer. blackdovebrighton.com

World’s End 60-61 London Road, Brighton 01273 692311 The World’s End is so proud of their prodigious entertainment that they’ve placed the stage in their front window. From live music to live sports coverage, DJs, retro games machines, 20 beers on tap, drinks promotions, Bar-B-Q Shack menu, cash poker on Sundays and quiz night with quirks e.g. sometimes featuring a Plasticine round. Armageddon be damned, I’m having a beer. worldsend.pub
Dandelion 103 North Road, Brighton 01273 677776 A vegan botanical cocktail and champagne bar that blends ethics with style. Hidden away below the 1847 vegetarian restaurant, this basement bar is modern and exclusive but without pretense. As you descend the spiral staircase you get the feeling you are discovering somewhere; a subterranean secret. A place that is less about experimentation and more about offering quality at a not-unreasonable price.
Koba 135 Western Road, Brighton 01273 720059 This beautifully styled venue makes the best of both night and day. From their locally roasted fresh coffee, loose-leaf teas, pastries and sandwiches to fine wines, craft and draught beer and botanical cocktails infused with seasonal fruits, herbs and spices. Host to a discerning clientele and offering table service they live up to their ethos of making customers feel welcome and comfortable. koba-brighton.com

Oki Bar 6 New Road, Brighton 01273 773777 The Oki Bar has a serenity that belies it’s inventive and inquiring nature. Consider their cocktail called Blood Diamond; their objective was to make a clear Bloody Mary, an objective they pursued even to the point of inventing their own secret recipe transparent Worcestershire sauce. They also offer a unique range of spirits which include Japanese whisky, Saki and rice wines.
Harbar 64 Kings Rd, Brighton 01273 323221 “Wunderbar” was the mixologists succinct and apt description of the spacious yet intimate Harbar which nestles within the Harbour Hotel. Upmarket and exclusive but never intimidating, e.g. for a bottle of sparkling you can pay anywhere between £29 and £350 if you fancy the Vintage Dom Perignon Rose. This innovate and playful venue is rightly proud of their selection, quality and style.
