avigating the social structure at school can be a minefield. As parents, we do our best to protect our children, warning them about bullying and what they should do in the event of verbal or physical abuse. But what about some of the subtler, insidious types of bullying? Boys are more likely to engage in physical aggression (easy to spot) girls however, are more likely to engage in relational aggression, which is difficult to identify and can have more damaging effects. Children who have experienced this type of bullying may have difficulty forming trusting relationships as adults. So, although this behaviour is often dismissed as ‘girls being girls’ it is in fact extremely harmful. Relational aggression is the psychologist’s term for what the rest of us refer to as being a ‘mean girl’. This behaviour is commonly displayed among school age girls, some boys and lesser emotionally evolved adults. (Monkey see, monkey do…) You may have experienced this yourself at some point. Being on the receiving end is akin to receiving a verbal slap in the face, leaving the victim feeling humiliated, shocked and unable to know how to respond.

place by belittling, exclusion, spreading rumours, ignoring or conditional friendship. The effects can severely damage a child’s self-esteem, as pre-pubescent and early teenage years are a time when fitting in is pivotal. Conditional friendship can be defined as ‘going along with the group’. This would explain why girls (and boys) who are normally caring individuals, can be drawn in for fear of also being victimised for not following the others. It’s important we call-out this behaviour as being unacceptable. If this is happening to your child, help them understand it has nothing to do with genuine friendship, these actions are about power and control being exerted by another individual, who may be feeling inadequate themselves. So, what can you do to help? Firstly, educate your children about relational aggression so they recognise it if it occurs. Celebrate your own friends’ positive

qualities, this will help them understand what real connections are. Teach your kids not to be afraid to stand up for others, being kind and supportive is a strength not a weakness. My personal belief is, that children under the age of 16 should have limited access to social media. It’s commonly known that bullying takes place online and is something virtually impossible to monitor. However, if your child does engage on Facebook and the like, ask them to flag up anything that has made them feel uncomfortable. Mr Gay Europe Speaks to R+C about Pride Families and Pop ‘n’ Olly Brighton is home to a multitude of talented and beautiful people, including Mr Gay Europe, aka, Matt Rood. Matt won the highly coveted ‘My Gay England’ title last year, giving him automatic entry into ‘Mr Gay Europe’, where he was crowned winner in August. You might imagine that someone as easy on the eye as he, would be arrogant, not so. Behind the piercing blue eyes, charming smile and enviable physique, lies a refreshingly unpretentious man. Matt adores living in Brighton with his two Hungarian Vizslas, Hugo and Lulu and recent new addition, flat-mate, Mr Gay Wales. I wrongly assumed that Mr Gay Europe was a nothing more than a glorified beauty contest. However, Matt put me straight on that theory:
‘You might imagine that someone as easy on the eye as he, would be arrogant, not so’.
“The competition was tough! It took place in Stockholm, over six days. There were ten really full on categories. In the activist round, we were asked to create a campaign that would benefit the LGBT community. My campaign is called ‘Pride Families’. It aims to raise awareness and support LGBT people who want to foster children. I’m linked with various councils across the UK, including Brighton and Hove. It’s really important that everyone is given the opportunity to foster, not just heterosexual people.” The inspiration behind his campaign came from Matt’s real-life experience. He fostered for three years and during this time helped ten children between the ages of 1 -14. He describes it as the most rewarding time of his life so far. Subsequent to winning the title, Matt has worked closely with many LGBT charities across the UK. He also visits primary schools, where he answers questions about his sexual orientation and reads Pop ‘n’ Olly books at story time. Pop ‘n’ Olly’s mission is to eradicate homophobia.
They believe the most effective way to battle discrimination for future generations, is by educating children about a wider cross-section of society. Their ethos is acceptance, kindness and respect. In order to convey this message, the company have published many wonderful books that explain these differences in a childfriendly way. Matt explained: “It’s amazing visiting the primary schools, the kids really engage with me and ask me lots of questions. The story I read to them is called Prince Henry, it’s about a prince who wants to get married. The book explores homosexuality in a way they understand, it’s about having the freedom to love whoever you like without judgement.” When he’s not being gorgeous and inspiring the gay community, Matt loves nothing more than spending time with the dogs in his care. He runs a successful dog

walking business – Rooddog. I got the distinct impression that he’s happier walking hounds on the Downs than standing on stage in front of thousands of people: “I’m quite a shy person, but having to stand on stage and speak in front of 30,000 people soon changes that! Winning the title of My Gay Europe, is a real honour. I’m getting to work with some amazing charities now and really helping the LGBT community. My mum tells everyone, my whole family are literally bursting with pride.” To buy the books visit: popnolly.com

Top five foods...
that affect child’s mood and behaviour and what to do about it
Did you know that by paying a close attention to what your children eat you could improve their mood, memory and attention span at school? Most parents instinctively know what triggers the change in their children from one minute playing peacefully to screaming tantrums 20 minutes later. There’s a clear relationship between food and your state of mind and when you combine strategies for eating the right foods that have a positive effect on your child’s well-being, you can plan meals that can help your child to feel better.
The worst offenders are reds E129, E122 and yellow E102. What to do: swap for wholefoods – an apple, tangerine, a handful of blueberries or walnuts are all great treats and there are companies out there who are dedicated to providing natural sweets for kids. Take a tour through your local health food store and find out who they are. Another food that your child may be sensitive to is dairy – many children have difficulties digesting dairy and they can cause mood swings and headaches.
Too much sugar makes children hyperactive, frustrated and angry. You can lower the amount of sugar your kids consume by avoiding sugary drinks and switching to pure water instead.
What to do: try switching to organic dairy products. Goats and sheep milk is generally easier to digest or try some other alternatives like nut milks, coconut and almond yoghurts.
Artificial colorings - the bright colors in kid’s foods have been linked to hyperactivity, ADHD, anxiety and depression in children. Those bright colors don’t come from beetroots, blueberries or turmeric. Instead most of them are derived from petroleum.

Artificial sweeteners are a poor replacement for sugar. Artificial sweeteners are chemicals that taste sweet but contain no calories. Ironically, they increase your appetite and can make you gain weight. They might cause tummy upsets, anxiety and hyperactivity.

What to do: replace sugar with stevia, maple syrup, honey or palm sugar If you think your child’s diet may be affecting their behaviour, I would recommend keeping a food diary, write down what they eat and how their behaviour changes.

Dishes + Dinner
Ever since etch. flung open its doors, I’ve had my nose pressed firmly against the window like a less impoverished Charlie Bucket. So, as you can imagine, I was delighted when Chef, Steven Edwards, invited me to review the food. The restaurant’s menu changes on a weekly basis in accordance with the local produce sourced, meaning that my partner and I had absolutely no idea what to expect.
needed to maintain a level of sobriety in order to review - but, as our waitress pointed out, I didn’t need to drink the whole glass. An inconceivable concept until this evening, note to future wine drinking self…
On arrival, we were greeted warmly by Mr Edwards himself and seated at an intimate corner table, with an uninterrupted view of the super-stylish restaurant. I was pleasantly surprised to find a relaxed atmosphere, having suspected it may be stuffy and full of pompous foody-types. The other diners were in fact everyday city folk, all deeply engrossed in conversation, while efficient waiting staff floated between the tables.
Etch staff were consummate professionals, who all had encyclopaedic knowledge of the food and wine served. The breathing space between each course was appreciated, time to fully savour every single, glorious mouthful.
For those of you unfamiliar with fine dining, the experience was akin to being a MasterChef Judge. Each plate of food was elegantly presented, with exquisite, yet simple flavours that complemented each other perfectly. I adored the broad bean and mint soup - a creamy, garlicy bowl of heaven. My other favourite (although I loved them all) was the beef and cabbage - slow-roasted beef rib and a beef shin croquette, accompanied by creamed and roasted cabbage, with a port sauce and freshly grated horseradish. The contrasting textures and flavours were sublime.
I’ve been fortunate to eat in many wonderful establishments across the city, but this was the pinnacle of all my dining experiences. Afterwards, I felt I’d been somewhere very special, the sophistication of the evening will stay with me for a long time. P.S – You will be in for a lovely surprise when you visit the loo…

Movies. Reviews by Martin Lampitt
Thor: Ragnarok Marvel Studios policy of using leftfield directors for their mainstream properties continues as Taika Waititi, the man responsible for the excellent ‘What We Do in the Shadows’, takes control of the third film to feature Chris Hemsworths God of Thunder. Tom Hiddleston returns as Loki with Cate Blanchett as the villian, Hela. Throw in the Hulk and Doctor Strange and we’re in for a treat.
The Mountain between Us Idris Elba and Kate Winslet star in this action adventure that sees two strangers forging a connection after a plane crash that forces them to survive the extreme elements of a remote snow covered mountain. Various actors have been attached to this project during its development including Michael Fassbender and Margot Robbie with Israeli director Hany Abu-Assad also replacing original choice, Gerardo Naranjo.
The LEGO Ninjago Movie This is the first Cartoon Network show to get a film adaptation since ‘The Powerpuff Girls Movie’ in 2002 but word his it that it will diverge from the TV series. As with most animated features these days, it features an impressive voice cast that includes Olivia Munn, Justin Theroux and the legend that is Jackie Chan along with an incredible five directors.
Daddy’s Home 2
Paddington 2 After the huge success of the first instalment in 2014 it was inevitable that we would see another outing for the nations’ favourite bear. Hugh Bonneville returns as the head of Paddington’s adopted family, the Browns, alongside Ben Wishaw and an impressive cast that includes Brendan Gleeson, Hugh Grant and Jim Broadbent. Paul King returns to direct and co writes the screenplay alongside Simon Farnaby.
Having sorted out their differences, this sequel to the 2015 hit sees Mark Wahlberg and Will Ferrell having to deal with their own fathers played by Mel Gibson and John Lithgow. The first film was genuinely funny so the return of director Sean Anders and his co-scriptwriters Brian Burns and John Morris bodes well. Linda Cardellini, John Cena and Alessandra Ambrosio join the fun.
The Son of Bigfoot In this animated comedy, a teenage boy journeys to find his missing father only to discover that he is actually Bigfoot. Directors Jeremy Degruson and Ben Stassen are no strangers to animated features, having worked behind the scenes on ‘The House of Magic’, ‘A Turtle’s Tale: Sammy’s Adventure’ and many more. Cinda Adams, Bob Barlen, Carl Brunker and Christopher L. Parsons provide voices.
The Star, the Story of First Christmas This festive animation from Sony Pictures sees a small but brave donkey named Bo who teams up with Ruth, a lost sheep and a dove called Dave as they follow a star and become accidental heroes in the story of the first Christmas. Voices are provided by Zachary Levi, Christopher Plummer, Steven Yeun, Ving Rhames, Kris Kristofferson and Oprah Winfrey.

Things you only know if... Your child has ADHD
approximately eight months to reach that point. Prior to that he was excluded from the primary school he attended because they felt that he was too disruptive and didn’t know how to handle him. He was home schooled by me for a while and then sent to a behavioural unit. This was heart breaking because I knew he didn’t belong there. The teachers at the unit agreed with me. After receiving the diagnosis through CAHMS, I felt like a weight had been lifted. It wasn’t my fault after all.
You blame yourself and others label you a ‘bad parent’ Before receiving the diagnosis, I blamed myself and thought that my parenting skills weren’t up to scratch. I felt that everyone was judging me and thinking the same thing – and actually sometimes they were. We were often left out of parties and play dates. I felt that I was forever apologising for his behaviour, I was always on edge, just waiting for the next misdemeanour to occur. This put an immense amount of pressure on both of us. Having a child with ADHD is sometimes like being in an abusive relationship, but one you can never leave. There were times in the past when I agreed with this this statement. It’s draining to care for a child who won’t listen, lashes out and shouts. There is no filter in public places either. On one occasion, he kicked me repeatedly in the leg from one end of the park to the other because it was time to leave. Getting a diagnosis is a long process. My son was diagnosed at the age of seven, it took

There is massive amounts of help and support available. AMAZE children’s charity were fantastic, they supported me from day one. I attended a parenting course through them, where I learned coping strategies. Also, once you have a diagnosis, schools are obligated to offer support. As a result of this my son got a place at an amazing inclusive primary school. His behaviour changed dramatically within a few months, because he was in a place where people saw through his issues and liked him for being him.

A little understanding goes a long way. ADHD children are often very caring, creative and funny people. They react strongly to their environments. If they feel accepted and respected, they respond positively. Because ADHD is an unseen disability, it can be very easy to pass judgement. Just remember that words, unkind glances and isolating behaviour are very hurtful. Children with ADHD find it difficult to moderate their impulses, they aren’t ‘naughty’ they struggle every single day just to fit in.

‘Before receiving the diagnosis, I blamed myself and thought that my parenting skills weren’t up to scratch’.
Dear Sam, My son starts school very soon and although I’m really excited for him, I’m also really worried he will be bullied and won’t make friends. I hated school and was bullied most of the time I was there and I can’t shake the feeling that he will be like me. He is a quiet, shy boy who doesn’t always find it easy with others. We’ve only lived here for a short while so he won’t know anyone when he starts. Thanks , J
Dear J, Firstly, your feelings are normal and I’m not surprised you’re worried given your own background and the bullying you experienced at school. I wonder if it might be helpful for you to find someone to talk to about this, bullying at school can have such a huge impact on us, our self -esteem and confidence can be seriously undermined and it can be really helpful to understand the ways it affects us as adults. Starting school can be daunting when we don’t know
anyone, but remember he won’t be the only one. There will be loads of activities that will encourage the class to mix and get to know each other, teachers will be encouraging friendships. There are also things that you can do to help: Is your son actually feeling anxious? Have you talked to him about starting school and what his fears and anxieties might be? Allow him to say things in his own time. Remind him of all his lovely qualities and the things that make him a good friend to others, reinforcing his belief in his ability to make friends. When he starts school try to get to know some of the other parents at the gate, see if you can tag along for any after school stuff, explain that you don’t know anyone, people are often willing to include you if you ask. If your concerns continue please remember that all children settle in their own time, but do speak to the teacher or TA. My son once told me he spent all his playtimes alone without a single friend, when I spoke to the teacher she was amazed and was able to reassure me this was totally untrue.
AG O N Y AU N T
Agony Aunt Anxiety. Who doesn’t feel a little anxious at times? It’s a problem that nearly all of us experience at different points in our lives. However, for some of us anxiety can become overwhelming and interfere significantly with the way we live. It can stop us making friends, going out and getting on at work. It’s useful to remember that anxiety is a feeling, like all the other feelings we have, expect that generally it’s not a feeling we like. The primary purpose is to warn us that we need to be alert to something potentially harmful, sending signals to our body to prepare to “fight or flight”, hence our heart beats faster and our breathing becomes shallow. However, because we rarely encounter true danger, there aren’t many tigers hanging out on the streets of Brighton and Hove waiting to pounce, thanks goodness - often our anxiety is focused on things that we perceive to be dangerous or difficult and sometimes this is rooted in our past experiences. It can take some working out why we feel this way, it isn’t always obvious to us or others close to us, this is where talking to someone can help. Sometimes our anxiety is trying to tell us something that we are ignoring, so if you feel anxious around a specific person for example ask yourself why and what it might be. The key, is not to ignore anxious feelings hoping they will go away, it’s our bodies signal that we need to listen to what’s bothering us, sometimes it’s a small thing that we can deal with but sometimes it’s much bigger, don’t let it run your life, talking to someone can really help.

Coffee at 11 with girlfriends, I need this downtime. I’ll
The alarm goes off at 6.30am. I start with some simple Yoga Asanas and sip a hot lemon water. The school run is my most stressful time of the day. 200 other mums and me scrambling to get a decent parking space at one of the City’s most prestigious Prep schools in our shiny 4X4’s. Do you have any idea how hard it is is to park one of these even with parking sensors. My hubby recently bought me a personalized plate as a joke ‘Hot Mama’. From some of the looks from the parents though I’m convinced they think I take myself seriously. My day is pretty much the same every day.. a session in the Gym with my Personal Instructor who claims to be some health and fitness blogger/vlogger Guru.
then try to squeeze in an express manicure or blow dry or organic facial if my skin is looking flat. I only shop online these days.. thank God for Net A Porter and mytheresa.com. Before I know it, its school pick up and then the next 3 hours will be dedicated to schlepping the kids from one club to another. Sometimes this involves being at two different places at the same time. My house keeper, Zelda comes in daily and so when I return home around 6 she has walked the dog, fed the cat, made my house look like a boutique Hotel again and left a home cooked meal waiting for us. I’m usually in bed by 10, exhausted from the day. Its full on being a yummy but I wouldn’t change it for the world.
whole family to enjoy.

Travel. Neilson holidays
The Neilson brand was born from a passion for all things active, and that passion continues to thrive, thanks to the trend and our addiction to lifestyle sports. In fact recent stats reveal that over the last 2 years active sport holidays are seriously on the increase. The average spend of a family holiday to Europe equates to a whopping two months salary, around £5,000+ so getting it right is key. 2017 is, according to Trending polls ‘The year For Action And New Experiences’, with 75% of global travellers planning something new to experience. Many parents choose to take their holidays in school half terms but a recent YouGov survey disclosed that the number of fines issued to parents taking their children on holiday during school term-time still remains relatively high. There are now currently tons of companies out there offering active holidays but we rate Neilson. Not only based locally, they are long established and provide good quality, high standard travel experiences. A concept we consumers just can’t get enough of it seems! And with the current increase in demand for active vacations Neilson are outshining the competition right now. New beach club destinations this year include Sardinia, Croatia and Greece. If you are active yourself and your kids enjoy engaging with outdoor pursuits, choosing this type of holiday is a great way to see your kids confidence and skills grow and can be immensely rewarding as a parent. ‘Relax as hard as you like’ is Neilson’s philosophy and so if it’s a Ski trip in the Alps, an active Beach Club vacay or Sailing away into the sunset that you are seeking, Neilson’s team will match you with your perfect holiday. We on the editorial team here asked friends and family about their Neilson holiday experiences. We can report that feedback was 100% positive and in fact everyone we spoke to seemed brand loyal, returning to book a new holiday with this travel company each year. neilson.co.uk
