MUM’S THE WORD TIME TO LET GO ... A LITTLE
By Samantha Harman
As the school year draws to a close, some of you reading this will soon be saying goodbye to your child’s primary school for the final time and thinking ahead to life at secondary school in September. I was in your position precisely two years ago - saying teary goodbyes to favourite teachers, taking masses of photos in the playground and subsequently getting slightly sozzled on Prosecco in Queens Park with my mum and friends. It was the end of an era and as the sun went down that day, we all knew friendships between our kids may soon become distant due to different secondary placements. For us, the afternoon pick up sessions we’d grown to love were to be no more. Not to mention the amazing exercise walking up (and up) through the streets of Hanover every afternoon on my part! I felt more than apprehensive about the impending changes. I worried about
bullying, stricter rules, longer days, the distance from home, if my son would enjoy it - you get the picture - I basically worried about everything. And this is totally normal, it’s a massive adjustment for them and for you. Not only that, it’s a time when we have to accept that our babies are growing up and that we need to let go...a little. Two years on and I’m here to assure you that everything has worked out. My son has adapted well and in spite of a few hiccups along the way, we’re both still sane. The independence he has gained has in turn afforded me some too. In fact, our front door has become a turnstile that he passes in and out of with alarming regularity between school and social engagements. I am that mother now, you know, the one who stands there offering food while snatching conversations about his day, during the nanoseconds we have before he departs upon his next terrific social whirl.
These days were inevitable, I knew he’d grow up and I’d become a cosy backbencher as opposed to the wing woman in his life. However, in spite of his new-found freedom the closeness we’ve always had endures. He still shares worries and cuddles with me, even telling me recently: “Don’t worry mum, I’ll never be too old to hold your hand”. Maybe I’ll remind him of that promise when he’s 16 and with his friends… I wish you all good luck during this next exciting chapter of your lives.

KIDS IN TERVIE WS
How I feel about going to secondary school…
Luca, Year 8 How did you feel before starting secondary school? Before going to secondary school, I was worried that I was going to get a lot of homework. It hasn’t turned out that bad. You get quite a bit of homework in term time but at least you don’t get any in holiday time. How do you feel now you’re in year 8? I am very excited about being at secondary school. I think you get a lot more freedom there in comparison to primary school. I also like having different teachers. What advice would you give someone in year 6 who is starting in September? It’s actually a lot of fun and you will make new friends. I can guarantee it!
Sonny, Year 7 How did you feel before you started secondary school? I was a bit nervous but also excited, especially about meeting more people. I was worried that some of them would be mean though. I knew it was going to be a big change and I also worried about being late for classes as the school is a lot bigger than primary. How do you feel now you’re at the end of year 7? I way prefer it. No one is mean and I actually enjoy going to school now, even though some lessons are boring. Most of my friends are in my class, my three best friends from primary came to the same school as me. What advice would you give someone going up in September? It’s great because there’s more people and more space to move around. The food is a lot better too as there’s more choice.

Niko, Year 6
Lani, Year 8 How did you feel before starting secondary school? I was really nervous about meeting new people and travelling on the bus by myself. I was the only girl from my primary school to go there and I knew I’d miss my old friends.
What will you miss the most about primary school? What I will miss the most is probably my friends who are going to different schools. What I will also miss is the fact that primary school is so close and secondary school will be a long way away. How do you feel about starting secondary school in September? I am very excited and not nervous at all!
How do you feel now you’re in year 8? I’ve made loads of new friends and we talk online all the time. We help each other out with homework and school problems. I really like going on the bus to school with them in the mornings.
Lilly, Year 8 What advice would you give to someone who is starting September? Remember that you will make new friends and everyone is in the same boat when they start. Always ask for help if you need it and try to do your best. Be nice to everyone as it makes school life easier.
“I am very excited about being at secondary school. I think you get a lot more freedom there in comparison to primary school. I also like having different teachers.”
How did you feel before starting secondary school? When I was about to start secondary school, I felt excited but nervous in case I got lost as my secondary school is a lot bigger and there are buildings everywhere! Also, I wondered what the people from other schools I hadn’t met would be like. How do you feel now you’re in year 8? Now I’ve been at secondary school for two years I feel more confident because I know more people in the year. I’m not afraid to ask for help if I need it. What advice would you give someone who is starting in September? Don’t think about it too much because then you’ll just end up worrying over nothing and just get to know people as well as you can when you get there.

Although you may be sobbing inwardly about the forthcoming change, try and view this step as a positive, exciting experience. Children pick up on your emotions and will follow suit.
Create ‘fail safes’ – this will help your child cope with the unexpected. Go over scenarios with them calmly such as: If you miss the bus … If you feel unhappy … etc. It is important to impress upon them that teachers are there to help and they shouldn’t be afraid to ask!
Your main point of contact will be your child’s form tutor, who will provide continuity throughout the school year. Don’t be afraid to email or phone them if you feel there’s an important issue to be discussed.
02 Forging links with parents (and their children) who are going to the same school is a smart move – they will of course make new friends, but a familiar face will provide a fantastic prop during the settling in period.
Water is not always readily available in secondary schools so ensure they have a water bottle; a dehydrated child is not able to concentrate easily.
08 Familiarise yourself with their timetable, sticking one on the fridge is a great idea, that way you won’t forget P.E. kits or homework.
09
03 Ensure you have all of the right kit – this will help reduce the stress on the first day.
04 Prior to starting in September, make the journey with your child. This will help build confidence about the route.

Tips for coping with the transition from primary to secondary school
06 Your child is likely to find secondary school a lot more challenging than primary school. Try and ensure that your home is a calm and welcoming sanctuary. Although your child is older this doesn’t mean that a later bedtime is a good idea! Stick to a routine wherever possible.
@rockandcandybtn
Finally, check in with them. Your child might think that suddenly he/she is all grown up, the social side at secondary school is a whole new ball game. Never underestimate the power of a cuddle and a chat. A starting secondary school checklist is available to print: fdslive.oup.com

Terre à Terre Terre a Terre is one of those establishments that you walk into and feel immediately at ease. The cool interior was the perfect antidote to a sweltering summer’s evening and as we slid into our comfortable booth, we knew we were in for a treat.
Kids Food Review
The cocktail menu was presented to us and I selected a Ginger Margarita, my significant other, being a non-drinker, chose a Lychee Blush. Our very friendly waitress brought them to our table within a matter of minutes – I need to divulge that I’m something of a margarita connoisseur, but the restaurant’s barman is an alchemist. He created the
12
perfect Margarita blend with a subtle ginger infusion. If you’ve ever wondered what a carnival on a plate looks like, then you must order the tapas sharer. It was a beautifully presented explosion of colour and flavour, with a little bit of everything from the main menu. I particularly enjoyed the KFC (Korean fried cauliflower) and the vodka injected baby tomato was a wonderful surprise. The whole plate was just as delightful to the eye as it was to the palate. By the time it came to ordering dessert, we were both absolutely stuffed, so opted to
share a portion of Snap, Crackle and Choc. Once again, a work of art on a plate was presented to us. The rich cacao and hazelnut mousse was balanced perfectly by the summer strawberry sorbet. Terra a Terra’s tagline states that: ‘Vegetarianism is more about indulgence than abstinence’, my partner and I couldn’t agree more!

Buddies When I walked in I thought Buddies had a retro image, which I liked. We met the owner, Andy Cheesman, who was friendly and welcoming. He helped me decide what to order. I ordered large king prawns and chips. When the food turned up it was very well presented on a wooden board and the chips had their own basket. I have peeled king prawns before, it was tricky at first but I soon got the hang of it because I was starving! There were eight on my plate,

Spider-Man: Homecoming 5th July, In Cinemas With Marvel Studios taking over the reigns, this could finally be the Spider-Man film that the fans have been clamouring for. Tom Holland’s cameo in ‘Captain America: Civil War’ met with a positive response and an appearance from Robert Downey Jr here ensures that this is firmly part of the Marvel cinematic universe. Michael Keaton is the Vulture, one of Spidey’s oldest and deadliest foes.
Cars 3 14th July, In Cinemas War For the Planet of the Apes 14th July, In Cinemas The third film in the rebooted franchise that actually gives the originals a run for their money sees yet more conflict between ape and human as both sides wrestle for existence. Andy Serkis once more provides the motion capture acting for the impressive CGI creation that is ape leader Caesar whilst Woody Harrelson leads the humans into the continuing battle.
Director Brian Fee has risen through the ranks at Pixar to helm the return of Lightning McQueen (voiced by Owen Wilson) as he sets out to prove to a new generation of racers that he is still the best. Some familiar faces return from the original including tow-truck Mater (Larry the Cable Guy), girlfriend Sally Carrera (Bonnie Hunt) and auto-body shop owner Ramone (Cheech Marin).

Dunkirk 21st July, In Cinemas This is the first film from Dark Knight trilogy director Christopher Nolan to be based on historical events and depicts the dramatic events that surrounded the evacuation of Allied soldiers from Belgium, the British Empire, Canada and France who were cut off and surrounded by German soldiers during the Battle of France in 1940. Tom Hardy, Cillian Murphy and Kenneth Branagh are amongst the impressive cast.

Posh Totty Designs started with a little shop (the littlest shop in Brighton) up an alleyway, where I sold my handmade, handstamped, personalised jewellery and all of my favourite things by other local jewellery makers. It was a real passion and for a long time it was just me. I even had my two-week-old baby sleeping under the shop counter, as I hadn’t yet taken the leap to becoming an employer. That was scary but exciting. Things have changed pretty dramatically since then and I now have a fabulous team of 48 (97% women) including my mother and husband (who also do a lot of the childcare) four shops (including our brand new shiny London shop

in Islington) and we have the largest jewellery workshop in the south of England where every piece is hand-made. I still have my first little shop up the alleyway, which I have just re-named ‘Posh Tots’ - a little shop for you and your little ones. We focus on lovely kids toys and clothes as well as our own range of family orientated jewellery. It is still my favourite shop as it brings back loads of happy memories of a simpler life and where it all began. Although I call my business my baby, I try to remember that my family comes first. I have two amazing boys who keep me busy and entertained. They always make me laugh. My mum is my number one inspiration, as she was a single parent mother who made me feel that anything was possible!
How to introduce myself? Well I guess my first description would be counsellor, mother and wife, with the order changing every day and sometimes every hour. I guess the other way would be to say I am Sam: I cry, I laugh, I get it wrong and sometimes right. I like working on my own but I also love to be with friends and the people I love. Like all of us I can be many, different, contradictory things.

50 Things To do Before You’re 11¾s Some of our favourites:
#2 - ROLL DOWN A REALLY BIG HILL #9 - EAT AN APPLE STRAIGHT FROM A TREE
Many of today’s children are more comfortable with a game controller in their hands than the branches of a tree, this was proven by a recent survey conducted by TV Channel, Eden. The results were alarming: out of the 2000 eight to twelve year olds interviewed, 64% of them said they play outside less than once a week, 28% had never been on a country walk, 21% had never visited a farm and 20% had never even climbed a tree. This is a worrying sign of the times. Connecting with natural surroundings is pivotal to mental and physical health, aside from this it’s also a fun, free way of expending the
boundless energy children have, meaning that you ultimately get more peace and quiet at bedtimes! With this in mind, The National Trust have created a terrific app entitled: ‘50 things to do before you’re 11 ¾’. It can be downloaded free for android and IOS and is an extremely fun way of helping to inspire you and your little ones during the summer holidays. Not only is it perfect for those on a budget, it’s also a great way to ensure that your children engage with natural surroundings. Once your child has answered a few questions about their attitude towards nature, the
app will tell then their explorer style, it then gives some options to choose from such as, skim a stone – once you have completed this task, you can then record what you did, where you did it and upload a photo! The app saves these moments as memories to look back on at a later date. We tried it and it’s brilliant!

What happened when we landed at Legoland PA R E N T R E V I E W By Louise Donno
Suitable for kids aged three -12, Legoland Windsor has over 55 rides and attractions that include Pirate Shore, Land Of The Vikings, Nexo Knights Kingdom, Kingdom Of The Pharaohs, Duplo Valley and Heartlake City. Legoland is apparently made up of more than 55 million bricks and I think it’s safe to say brick rules here. Lego Ninjago The Ride, is the latest attraction launched in June. The first of its kind in the UK to use thrilling 4D effects of heat, smoke and wind, alongside state of the art Maestro hand gesture technology, enabling riders to virtually throw fire balls, shock waves, ice and lightning using nothing but their hands, as well as intuitively adapting to each individual’s playing
style. This, along with 3D image projection throughout the ride, makes the LEGO NINJAGO World experience feel as real as possible for aspiring young ninjas. It’s awesome! My kids love Drench Towers, now open for the summer this is the largest water outdoor play structure in the country – designed to give your kids a serious soaking. Splash Safari is for younger kids and just as much fun. A good two days is what you really need to get around and enjoy this resort. I would definitely recommend the new Castle Hotel open from July this summer to break up the trip. Features include themed rooms, leisure facilities, consul and treasure hunt
in every room as well as early resort access. Book way way in advance if you are planning a trip. There’s definitely a knack to getting the most out of your visit. With careful prep of what you want to do and see before you arrive as well as indulging in the Q-Bot fast tracking reservation system (worth every penny). I would also recommend that you visit the shop on your way into the attraction – it’s less busy and you are still fresh and got more energy to keep those kids on their spend budget. Keep your eye out too for regular promotions from the Merlin Entertainment Group whom Legoland are part of. legoland.co.uk

DAYS O U T
Days out in Sussex: Drusillas I think I can confidently say that if you live in East Sussex you have probably visited Drusillas Park at least once, if not multiple times. I worked out on my recent visit that I have in fact been taking my kids ranging from six to 18, for the best part of 16 years. I never tire of this attraction, if anything I look forward to seeing some of the beautiful species there including Serval cats, Karimba and Ninja. What many visitors don’t realise when they visit, is the hard work and effort that it takes to manage the zoo and to maintain such high standards. The Smith family who own Drusillas are really passionate about giving their customers a fantastic and memorable experience. Also worth mentioning, the Zoo are members of numerous animal conservation and breeding programs and you can visit with peace of mind that these animals are really being cared for. If you are lucky enough to visit on a scorchio day, as was I, the ‘Get Wet’ area comes into its own. Kids can enjoy a taste of the tropics as they dodge the flower fountains, weave past the wavy palm trees and become completely immersed in the fun. If you forget swimmers and
a towel, these can be bought from the shop there. Go Safari is the recent millionpound installation at Drusillas, that was launched earlier this year. Speed through the air on a Flying Cheetah, launch into the clouds on the Hippoptomus, or climb aboard the African themed Safari Express train and take a journey deep into the heart of the zoo.

CASS Sculpture Foundation PA R E N T R E V I E W By Louise Donno

The Cass Foundation was set up in 1992 by visionary, philanthropist Wilfred Cass, on land that was originally part of the Goodwood Estate. A tranquil, beautiful spot where sculptures sit side by side with nature. I have been a regular here ever since I was brought on a date 11 years ago. A very romantic place to woo someone! As many returning visitors, I have my favourite sculptures that I look forward to seeing (hoping that they haven’t been sold on or loaned out somewhere). This is purely selfish of me of course because art in all its forms should be shared. Triton III by Bryan Kneale, still gives me such joy. This large sheet sculpture soaks up the reflections of its environment, mirroring blue sky and landscape that is ever changing. I could just sit and look at this piece all day. The 2016 commission, ‘A Beautiful Disorder’, from 18 Chinese artists is most definitely one of the most daring, full of social and political undertones.

‘Escape’ (My family History) by Li Jinghu, refers to the constraints of growing up and living in China. Two high walled fences with spot lights standing a few metres apart are clearly universal symbols of restraint and division. Also resonating with me is Lu Pingyan’s ‘Ghost Trap’. A young man finds himself lost in the grounds of Cass itself where he is trapped overnight. As night falls, he sees all kinds of strange and horrifying things, which could be illusions caused by the various sculptures in the park or ghosts of these sculptures attempting to make him stay forever. The final sculptural works exhibited are two objects that remain at the end of the story; a dilapidated car and a rock inscribed with the ghost story. Brothers Jake & Dinos Chapman’s ‘The Meek Shall Inherit The Earth But Not The Mineral Rights’ features three large-scale Scorten Steel dinosaurs entitled The Good, The Bad and The Ugly. Towering at over 8 metres. They bring humour and playfulness to this

work but when you touch the surface, it has in fact much more depth. You don’t have to be an art buff to enjoy the experience of this open-air gallery. Sometimes you might not see another soul giving you, as a visitor a feeling of open, unobtrusive space. It’s a joy to bring the kids here, seeing them free and inspired. The imagination has no limits. sculpture.org.uk

Days out in London: Hampton Court PA R E N T R E V I E W By Louise Donno
Often referred to as Henry VIII’s ‘pleasure palace’, Hampton Court Is located at Richmond next to the Thames. You can imagine the Kings and Queens that travelled up by river to Hampton Court being in awe as this magnificent palace came into view. I still get a pang of excitement each time I return to Hampton Court and I think this is probably true for most returning visitors. Being a history buff I get very excited when Tudors and Stuarts pop up on the school syllabus. With my daughter recently announcing that this was to be her next topic I couldn’t wait to schedule a visit to Hampton court. This Palace is quite simply my favourite of all the Palaces (and quite possibly my daughter’s too now) – years of negotiating ‘device time’ for Lucy Worsley documentaries has paid off! Not only aesthetically pleasing to look at, what sets Hampton Court apart is that it has been so painstakingly well preserved and given attention to detail in the curation that it allows snoops like myself (and my daughter of course) to really get up close and personal to the great Kings and Queens that stayed at this great Palace. Since its beginning in 1515 when Cardinal Wolsey commissioned the build you can take a journey through history itself, which helps us understand
why we live, the way we are living now and ultimately why we are where we are. My daughter particularly found the actors who burst into the Great Hall dressed in period costume reenacting from this Tudor period really insightful. As you tour the Palace you can’t help but be inspired by the royal power and pleasure that went on there. Hampton Court Palace also continues to display a large number of works of art from the Royal Collection. The more recently opened Cumberland Art Gallery contains a selection of the Royal Collection’s finest paintings: masterpieces by Holbein, Van Dyck, Rembrandt,

Caravaggio, Bassano and Gainsborough, and other artists who worked for, or were collected by, four centuries of royal patrons. The beautifully landscaped gardens are simply delightful to wander round and the Maze, which covers half a mile of paths, is always a winner with the kids. Meanwhile, the Palace’s Magic Garden, inspired by the myths and legends of the Tudor court will find your kids exploring the lair of mythical beasts, and role playing in the Tiltyard Towers. hrp.co.uk

Getting zany at KidZania, London PA R E N T R E V I E W
By Louise Donno
A (mum) friend of mine had raved on about how good KidZania is. She described it as an indoor city where kids get the chance to explore real-life activities. What sold my daughter when she over heard this conversation was that you get the chance to be a fashion stylist. Located at the Westfield, in Shepherd’s Bush this is actually really easy to get to from Brighton and the South Coast. It takes two trains on Southern Rail to get there so you can swerve central London altogether.

Checking into KidZania is like being at an airport with online tickets exchanged for boarding cards. At check in we were all given wrist bands to wear that zap children in and out of activities and let us know where they are at all times – under eights need to be accompanied. My kids were both blown away by the colossal scale of this attraction, it spans 75,000 square feet over two floors. KidZania currency is also handed to them to spend and earn as they free flow from one activity to another and act out in real life jobs. These activities include being a Musician, TV presenter, Radio presenter, Pop star, Journalist, Surgeon, Dentist, Firefighter, Police Officer, Bank Clerk and stylist for H&M. S U M M E R I S S U E # 4 2 0 17
There is a lot of noise at kidZania and I will put this down to the kids just being so excited and having too much fun. You would need to visit at least twice to complete all of the activities. Kids can also apply for a KidZania passport that they can then get stamped after competing each task and rewarded with extra KidZos. My shrewd offspring have kept their KidZos for the next visit! A brilliant concept, KidZania gives kids an insight and taster of some really important professions and looking at the bigger picture allows them to explore the world of opportunities of what they might want to be in the future. And with our children’s generation needing more skills than ever before they will have to go out to work KidZania couldn’t be more apt. The set-up of each activity was really well thought out in terms of design, branding and authenticity. The kids had an amazing time and it’s an added bonus that this attraction is based at one of London’s best shopping Malls for retail therapy too. Kidzania.co.uk

50th anniversary celebrations for Rockinghorse Children’s Charity As Rockinghorse celebrates 50 years of life-changing work, it offers the opportunity to reflect on the impact the charity has had on thousands of local children in Sussex. Founded by Dr Trevor Mann in 1967, Rockinghorse is best known as the official fundraising arm of the Royal Alexandra Children’s Hospital (the Alex) in Brighton, working tirelessly to improve, and save, the lives of sick children. The charity provides the Alex with the best cutting-edge medical equipment, and are often cited as the difference between good care and great care for our children. To mark their 50th anniversary, Rockinghorse has launched the ‘Sussex Giving for Sussex Children’ appeal. The charity aims to raise £500,000 this year to be split between ten children’s centres and paediatric services in Sussex. The funds will help them improve, refurbish, and develop their environment for the young people benefiting from their work.

In dance music circles the legendary Todd Terry needs no introduction. The Brooklyn based house DJ, producer and remixer is a pioneer of the Chicago house sound and released many of his early tracks on the ground breaking Strictly Rhythm record label. He has remixed a diverse range of artists from Duran Duran and Masters At Work to The Jungle Brothers and Garbage.
In the 1970s Cat Stevens wrote the songs that had the whole world singing along and sold more than sixty million albums worldwide.
