Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets 2nd, In Cinemas Director Luc Besson’s 1997 film ‘The Fifth Element’ is regarded as a classic so the news that he was returning to epic sci-fi for his latest film was greeted with excitement by geeks everywhere. This adaptation of a French comic looks stunning and footage shown at last years San Diego Comic Con received a standing ovation, which bodes well.
Atomic Blonde 9th, In Cinemas Charlize Theron stars as an MI5 agent who is sent to Berlin during the Cold War to investigate the murder of a fellow agent and recover a missing list of double agents. Theron spent five years developing the project and used eight personal trainers to help her master the action required for the part. James McAvoy co-stars alongside John Goodman, Toby Jones and Bill Skarsgard.
The Dark Tower 18th, In Cinemas This adaptation of Stephen King’s series of novels has been languishing in development hell for a good few years before being rescued by director Nikolaj Arcel. Heavily influenced by ‘The Good, the Bad and the Ugly’ and ‘Lord of the Rings’ this the first in a proposed series of films and a TV show starring Idris Elba as a gunslinger pursuing baddie Matthew McConaughey.
Rough Night 25th, In Cinemas In this comedy from director Lucia Antello, best known for his work on the fantastic and hilarious ‘Broad City’ TV show, Scarlett Johansson stars with Kate McKinnon, Zoë Kravitz, Llana Glazer (from the aforementioned show) and Jillian Bell as a group of girlfriends who hire a male stripper for a hen party in Miami with disastrous consequences. This looks like it could be very funny.

Bill’s The Depot , 100 North Rd. Brighton. BN1 1YE 01273 692 894 bills-website.co.uk/restaurants/brighton/
Now you may of visited Bill’s before which is located in North Laine area of the city found in a warehouse/depot, but if not then they have recently refurbished to a high standard and comfort for the many patrons that visit. For many years I had visited daytime only, but I was here for dinner. A warm welcome on arrival and we were seated on the mezzanine area which is a collection of eclectic seating, soft furnishing and carefully chosen vintage pieces. Starter was recommended by Ade which was “Bill’s” smoky Fire bread, with a spicy nduja sausage, tomatoes, chimchurri, crispy onions and Gran Moravia cheese – I found my guilty pleasure, delicious and moreish. Washed down with a pint of Budvar. Good choice. Next came the beautifully cooked sea bass fillets on a potato rosti with a fresh advocado, tomato & coriander mixed type salad, worked well with the fish. With just enough room to fit a – wait for it “Peach and raspberry crumble” to die for. Coffee, bill and no sign of Bill himself, but I now know he exists as I saw him at Love supreme festival In July looking rather refreshed after a recent opening. Go visit Bill at Bill’s.

The Brunswick
1 Holland Road, Hove 01273 733984 There’s a great deal to recommend this sizeable Hove pub close to the seafront, not least of which is its spacious garden. You’ll find a solid menu of burgers and hotdogs alongside a commendable selection of ever changing cask ales from across the region. But that’s not all pub fans, for the Brunswick also manages to host regular live music! thebrunswick.net
The Camelford Arms
30-31 Camelford Street 01273 622386 The traditional frontage of this east side bar deceptively conceals a modern and airy interior but there’s nothing stuffy about the Camelford Arms and you can be sure of a warm welcome no matter when you visit. A sound menu and quirky Moroccan themed cosy terrace out the back provide plenty more reasons to pay this pleasant pub a visit. camelford-arms.co.uk
Fiddler’s Elbow
11 Boyce’s Street 01273 325850 It’s rumoured this welcoming city centre Irish pub serves more Guinness on St Patrick’s Day than anywhere else outside of Ireland so if you’re a fan of the black stuff there’s no better Brighton local within which to sink a pint of it. Open late every night of the week it’s also a cracking spot for following sports, whatever your colours. drinkinbrighton.co.uk/fiddlers-elbow
The Hand in Hand
33 Upper St James’ Street 01273 699595 For a pub so small (and it’s probably got less floor space than your living room) the glorious Hand in Hand doesn’t half pack a punch. The Mucky Duck
7-9 Manchester Street 01273 601450 The real beauty of this backstreet Kemptown boozer is that it’s just so very homely. Splitting the Atom
Sun 13th The Green Door Store Sometimes notorious party town Brighton can be a bit much in August, leading some wishing to be soothed inside a cool darkened room while experimental sounds whoosh through their earholes. Their time has now come. This free all-dayer, presented by Club Zygotic and Lost Property, features noise from genre-benders Zophocles, Isn’tses, Eub-Astra, DJs Warren Piss and Stargoon and many more. thegreendoorstore.co.uk
Party in Your Pants
Fri 18th The Volks Dubbed ‘The Sunrise Session’ for its extended opening hours, Miles Metric will be kick starting this birthday special for the feminist topless UV bodydoodle enthusiasts of all shapes and sizes, then it’s over to Maestro Arthur Shillin. It’ll be rounded off with a holi powder party on the beach. Brighton proves once again its residents and visitors are the most colourful. volksclub.co.uk
Pure Disco
Fri 25th FunkyFish Club The latest addition to the Funky Fish Club’s roster of regular nights, Pure Disco launched in June to bring revellers 70s’ and 80s’ classics – think soul, motown, disco (naturally) and that all important F-word: funk. ‘Fun’ and ‘free’ also spring to mind. Punters are free to dress up, but no specific code is enforced (save a no to jogging bottoms, football shirts, and mankinis…) funkyfishclub.co.uk
