Skyfall 42 Church Road 01273 041 007 skyfallhove.com
What’s On HQ were lucky enough to be invited to Hove’s contemporary restaurant, SkyFall, for the launch of their Winter tasting menu. Welcomed with a glass of prosecco which slipped down far too easily on a Wednesday night, you gather not a ‘dry’ January for me. Our hosts Jordan & Rob were most welcoming and created a relaxed, luxurious atmosphere for their guests and their evening of food and entertainment. First came the Chef’s Amuse-Bouche; a bite sized hors d’ouvre. Next came Smoked Duck, served cold and full flavoured, with celeriac and kohlrabi remoulade, smoked beetroot and orange peel creating a fresh crunchy bite. Followed by a single scallop, cooked exactly as I like - simply pan fried and fleshy to taste - placed on chowder foam, quince puree and celeriac crisps. A fresh sorbet was provided to clear the palate for the main course - a fillet Steak, a choice selected cut with a flavor of the chargrill. Served with confit potato, girolle mushrooms, which added just enough additional flavor including a delightful artichoke puree, which I thought was excellent. This dish was the highlight for me - served with a South African red called Rib Shack to bring out the flavor of the steak, big, full bodied red and juicy. Followed by a ‘Taste Of The Sea’ dish of Hake, scallop salt, citrus pomme puree, kale, fennel seed, carrots and paella jus. The work that went into this dish was justified through the explosions of flavours. A well selected white wine ‘Ca’lughetta Pinot Grigio’ which had a floral bouquet, smooth & light – good selection. For the dessert an indulgent choice of salt baked pear and almond tart with a butterscotch cheesecake with a caramel ice cream – one word “heaven” Live entertainment was from singer Keris Lea with a range of classic and contemporary songs. SkyFall have created a space, kitchen and entertainment to warrant a return visit. Go. Justin Williams 18

Monday Jazz, Wednesday Open Mic and Thursday gigs are all well attended and lubrication is supplied by a stunningly well stocked bar which includes 22 World beers, 14 Belgian beers and, when I visited, the only keg of Ice Cream Chocolate Stout in the UK. facebook.com/beesmouth123
Fortune of War
157 Kings Road Arches 01273 205065 “Sitting in the crows nest watching lighting over the water”, as the bar manager elegantly puts it and it’s hard to beat sitting here in the prow of an ‘upturned boat’, warm and comfy, coffee or craft beer in hand watching the waves batter themselves to death in an attempt to escape the grey-leaden skies. Failing that there’s table football. fortuneofwar.pub

The Neptune
10 Victoria Terrace, Hove 01273 736390 Such is the clamour of bands wanting to play here that gig bookings are made a year in advance. Even the best bands only get to play twice, maybe thrice a year.
