march’must-see’ Ballet Rambert
Tues 1st – Fri 4th Theatre Royal Alongside two new creations Rambert’s historically iconic Ghost Dances is world famous choreographer Christopher Bruce’s masterpiece. It tells stories of love and compassion, as death – in the form of the iconic “ghosts” – interrupting the daily lives of a series of ordinary people. It’s a response to political oppression in South America using imagery from the Day of the Dead and traditional songs. atgtickets.com

Polpo Brighton 20 New Road 01273 697 361 polpo.co.uk
Venice is one of my favourite places in this world of ours and this night, shrouded in a Brighton sea mist, with streets damp underfoot felt as though I was transported back there. So imagine my delight at walking into Polpo finding that I was in a restaurant that could easily sit in a Venician backstreet. The welcome firstly from the barman then Pietro and his team was friendly, warm and assured. Entering through the bar you walk into the restaurant proper which opens out into this magical and cool space that feels as though it had existed for decades. The rustic tiled walls and wooden floor ooze confidence and trust. The air fills with the lively hubbub of fellow diners; groups of friends. I settled into a delicious peach bellini and my guest a cool glass of rosé whose pale pink / gold sparkled in the candle light. Pietro guided us through the deceptively simple menu of tapas style sharing plates. You choose as many as your hunger demands. I say deceptive because those simple dishes explode with an intoxicating mixture of flavours. All the dishes we ordered were striking in their authentic taste but those of particular note were the chickpea, spinach and ricotta ‘meatballs’ in a fresh, piquant tomato sauce and the feather-light gorgeous gorgonzola and prosciutto pizzette. Let’s not forget the luscious chilli and garlic prawns whose dressing dribbled seductively down your fingers – exquisite. For dessert we indulged in the wondrous, perfectly named, dark chocolate salami studded with nuts and a strawberry gelato cone. Finally we finished our evening lingering over excellent coffee deciding that to appreciate Polpo you really need to experience it in person. Kairen Kemp

St Patrick’s Festival Thurs 16th – Mon 21st Fiddler’s Elbow Join the Fiddler’s for an incredible five day long weekend of parties, celebrations, traditional music, dance, food, live Cheltenham & 6 Nations coverage and of course plenty of the black stuff! There will be live Irish music every day and Saturday the 18th sees the return of their Legendary Street Party, now in it’s 22nd year! facebook.com/fiddlerselbowbrighton
The King and Queen 14-16 Marlborough Place Brighton’s largest public house and one of our favourite boozers will be hosting a St Patrick’s Day weekend of celebrations. Sink some Guinness or try their Irish whiskey. We love this pub for its cheap prices and ‘craic’ing live music. The food is fantastic and with such a large menu you’ll be spoilt for choice. So settle in and soak up the atmosphere. thekingandqueen.co.uk

Their adaptable space allows them to host dance parties such as The Messaround Electro-Swing Speakeasy (third Saturday of the month) and Wednesdays Vintage Dance Night as well as live bands and Sunday pub quiz: Whose Quiz Is It Anyway in which comedian Julie Jepson plays a different character each week. thewindmillpub.co.uk
Park Crescent
39 Park Crescent Terrace 01273 604993 I noticed beef, celeriac and Badger pie on the ‘Specials Menu’ – then realised that they stock Badger Ale, along with Leffe on tap, selected wines, Sussex Vodka and Spirit of the Month deals. This hidden away, friendly neighbourhood pub hosts a challenging music quiz (first Wednesday of the month) and Pinball Tournament and DJ party (third Saturday of the month). theparkcrescent.co.uk

Ten minutes with
OLLY MURS Samantha Harman
What was the last photo you took on your phone? It was a selfie on Saturday morning, the morning after the night after before I look a bit worse for wear! What’s the one thing you can’t live without? I couldn’t live without my family and friends, living a life without them would be a disaster. We’re very close, they’re all so important to me. What’s your pet hate? Sweaty hands! I hate a sweaty hand shake, it’s gross there’s no need for it. I also hate people who are constantly on their phone on social media when you’re with them, it’s so rude. Oh and I hate tomatoes, they’re disgusting! The texture, the taste, what’s the point of them? What’s the best advice anyone’s ever given you? If you believe you can achieve. What has been the defining moment of your life so far? Getting through on X-Factor, everything went crazy for me after that. Who is your best friend? Mark Murphy, my tour manager. He’s like an older brother, a really wise man. We have a lot of fun and the same interests. What’s missing from your life? I miss having a dog, we always had one growing up. I also miss having a girlfriend, it’s easy for me to meet girls, but I still haven’t met ‘the one’. What is your quirkiest habit? I can beatbox, I’ve been able to do it for years. I can also do card tricks. What are you most grateful for? My amazing family and being able to do what I do for a living and having such amazing loyal fans. I’m really lucky. Olly Murs will be appearing at Central County Ground, Hove, 16th July 2017. For more info and tickets: ticketmaster.co.uk/ ollymurs.com

Deep house, jack and sassy soul will also feature, and the air will be awash with the sounds of Juno Synthesizers and Roland TR-808 drum machines. 80s’ icons Prince, Madonna, Janet Jackson and Gary Numan will be keeping it krazy. thegreendoorstore.co.uk 30

clublife
Fri 24th The Volks After a popular visit to Brighton’s longstanding club in Spring last year, Hungary’s DJ Budai has scheduled in another session for us in his busy rosta. Alongside collective Elements of Groove (deep house, techno) and duo SMX Project (house, progressive, electronica) he’ll be getting the room feeling funky with his unique take on techno. Yet more techno and trance in the second room. volksclub.co.uk

Sat 25th Concorde 2 Do you really like it? Course you do; it’s another Old Skool Garage night at the Concorde! A little bit of Kisstory, Club Classics, RnB, Bass, and House also feature on the line-up with over 10 DJs/collectives spread over two rooms to get you rocking the retro 2-step beats until daybreak. Live PA sets from the headliners and Little Nikki. concorde2.co.uk
Mondo Bizarro
Fri 31st The Hope & Ruin Brighton has a reputation for doing things a little bit differently, with this club night (taking place on the last Friday of every month, and free) being no exception. They bill Mondo Bizarro as “Habibi funk meets French nu-wave, Turkish psych, and Japanese pop”. Everyone should find something of interest in this global mix taking in everything from punk to funk. soundcloud.com/eerie2
Total Blam Blam Fri 31st Hotel Pelirocco This rock and roll boutique hotel is the perfect setting for these DJs’ (Jayney Blam Blam and Richey Watson) playlists – a leaning towards anything smeared in glitter and not caring what anyone might think of it. Punk, pop, motown, goth and more all get spun. This is the night for high heels and low lives. Show up and show off! facebook.com/BlamBlamClub

WHAT’S ON FESTIVAL GUIDE 2017
ONTH! OUT NEXT M Love Supreme Jazz Festival
30th June – 2nd July Glynde Place, East Sussex Over the last 5 years we have been lucky enough to attend all of the Love Supreme’s! We wouldn’t miss this for the world as its where we have seen some of the music legends. Chaka Khan, Brian Ferry, Candi Staton, Soul To Soul, Kellis, Caro Emerald and last year Grace Jones. This year you will be spoilt with are George Benson and Herbie Hancock headlining. *The food is very good at this festival! You can literally eat your way round the entire site over the course of the weekend. lovesupremefestival.com

Wildlife
Brighton City Airport 9th-10th June A good warm up to the summer season, Wildlife is usually the first festival we at What’s On go to each summer. It signifies the fest season kicking in. Although this is just outside of the city centre the transport links are excellent getting to and from the site. So far the line up includes Jess Glynne, George Ezra, Rag N Bone, Eric Prydz and our city’s very own resident DJ and producer Fat Boy. We can’t wait to see Lara Larsson. Bring on June! wildlifefestival.com
