Stratton 1st, In Cinemas Based on the series of novels by former Special Forces member Duncan Falconer, ‘Stratton’ casts TV Preacher Dominic Cooper as the title character, a British Special Boat Service commando who is tracking an international terrorist cell. Director Simon West is best known for 1997’s ‘Con Air’ so knows his way around an action film and is hoping to start a brand new franchise in the genre.

It 8th, In Cinemas Acclaimed horror author Stephen King has not had the best of luck when it comes to adapting his books for the big screen but this new take on his highly regarded novel looks suitably terrifying. Bill Skarsgard plays bogeyman Pennywise the Clown, last played by Tim Curry in the TV version 27 years ago, which, uncannily, is how often his killing sprees occur in the book.

Wind River 8th, In Cinemas Oscar nominated screenwriter Taylor Sheridan directs his own tale of an FBI agent who teams up with a veteran game tracker to investigate a murder that occurred on a Native American reservation. Jeremy Renner and Elizabeth Olsen star in the final instalment of Sheridan’s American Frontier trilogy which earned an eight minute standing ovation after it was shown in competition at the Cannes film festival.

Animal Crackers 15th, In Cinemas Hollywood once more proves that everything in popular culture is fair game by making a film based on a snack. A family uses a magical box of Animal Crackers to save a run-down circus being taken over by their evil uncle. The voice cast in this animation is extremely impressive as it includes Ian McKellen, Danny De Vito, Emily Blunt and Sylvester Stallone but really?

The Bok Shop

3-4 East Street Brighton | 01273 777 312 | thebokshop.com

Fast food restaurants in Brighton pop up like mushrooms with alarming regularity, so when I was invited to review The Bok Shop, my first thought was: “It’s just another chicken joint.” However, I couldn’t have been more wrong. The newly refurbished restaurant has been transformed and is completely unrecognisable from the tired looking predecessor. They’ve made fantastic use of the space, which now boasts high ceilings with warehouse lamps hanging stylishly overhead. Natural wooden benches and floors are offset by immaculate black and white retro tiles. The look is contemporary and (please excuse the colloquialism) very cool. Proprietor, Jamie, presented me with the menu, which is a ring bound list of drinks and food that you can colour in and take home. I particularly liked the funny titles, for example, one of the burgers is called ‘The Hot as Cluck’. I ordered a selection of goodies – The Classic, a burger made from thigh fillet, stuffed with crispy lettuce and lemon kewpie mayo. A chicken piece, a hot wing accompanied with jalapeno and sweet soy and ginger dips. I also couldn’t resist the homemade mash and hot chicken gravy, all required for research purposes you understand. When you think of fried chicken, you automatically assume it will be greasy. Not so. Every delicious bite was perfectly seasoned and crispy, with moist non-fatty chicken at its core. The flavours were clean and distinguishable. The mash and gravy is the best I’ve tasted outside of home. I was nicely full and ready to leave when Jamie offered me a homemade brownie with vegan ginger and cinnamon biscuit ice cream, who am I to refuse such an attractive offer? The ice cream complemented the slightly warm and ever so gooey brownie. Absolutely stunning. The thing about The Bok Shop is that it has a sense of humour, unlike other hipster establishments in town, it doesn’t take itself too seriously. The branding is witty without being pretentious. The food and service are outstanding, I will definitely be returning. Colonel Sanders ought to be extremely worried.

barlife

103 Trafalgar St. 01273 685681 British boozer with American flavour. Playing country, blues and American rock ‘n’ roll and offering one of the largest selections of Bourbon and American Whiskies around, alongside craft bottled beers and cask ales. This low-ceilinged nook of a pub hidden within plain sight is a chilled place during the day but at weekends Vinyl DJs make this a swinging place to be. facebook.com/ TheGreatEasternBrighton

The Basketmakers 12 Gloucester Rd. 01273 689006 There is a comfort in the traditional which is personified in this pub. Its 8 ale and 6 lager taps and its CamRa and Good Beer guide inclusions belie a quirky sense of humour. The walls are festooned with old tobacco tins each hiding a secret and the toilets host a witty graffiti theme you’ll find hard to resist playing along with. basket-makers-brighton.co.uk

Hobgoblin

31 York Place 01273 682933 Tequila Tuesdays and Lemon Wednesdays are just two of the many offers available, especially to students. Their award winning and well-designed garden is suited to both steamy hot summer and grey drizzly winter days. Food is provided by the acclaimed Doughbo and comes in the form of gourmet dough balls. There is even Bewilder Box’s Escape Room for anyone who fancies the challenge. hobgoblin.pub

The Globe

78 Middle St. 01273 770685 Set within pebble-pitching distance of the seafront, The Globe’s dark wood, deep red walls and copperpaneled ceiling suggest traditionality which is neatly counterpointed by their use of the two floors, whether hosting an intimate gig downstairs or a DJ club night on Wednesday or weekend nights. Keep an eye out for £2.50 Cuba Libre and student deals as well as Happy Hour. twitter.com/GlobeBrighton
