Initial Reseach and Thoughts

Will Jeffrey

MOO

Direction

I began by studying MOO’s brand guidelines and got to know their ‘personality’ a bit better. Although their way of thinking appealed to me, their design identity and guidelines we were asked to abide to really did not. Ironically, I found them quite poorly put together restrictive.

Competition Brief_1 MOO

I then started thinking about how I could respond to the brief. Something that really stood out to me was animation; it was something I have always wanted to try and I felt movement was fitting to the idea of design ‘working’.

Word Play

OUGD605

Word play allowed me to think about what each word in the strapline meant and how it could be visualised.

Illustration & Animation

Competition Brief_1 MOO

I started looking into illustration and animation styles that I felt could fit well with MOO’s identity - mainly digital/vector based.

Typeography

OUGD605

I also started looking into playful and interactive typeography as I felt something like this could be interesting to animate.

Design

Will Jeffrey

Thinking about individual words visually, ‘Design’ made me think about how design is a planned process and not something you just do. This led me to the concept of grids and blueprints.

Works

Competition Brief_1 MOO

For ‘Works’ I thought about factories, machines, pipes, cogs, levers, and movement.

Wonders

OUGD605

For ‘Wonders’ I tried to be a bit different and after being in a dusty room and opening my curtains to the sun, was led to the idea of floating particles.

Sketches

OUGD605

Sketches allowed me to develop my ideas. I decided that my response would break the 3 words down and visually represent them as individual sequences. I wanted them to work static as well as moving, just incase I could not animate them due to lack of time/animation knowledge.

Guidelines

Competition Brief_1 MOO

Although the brief required us to follow MOO’s design guidelines, I felt they were too restrive and struggled to work with them. As we have always been taught that competition briefs are nothing more than a way for companies to get free ideas, and that we should take out of them what we want, I decided not to follow them and to instead use this brief as a way to develop my animation skills.

Colour

OUGD605

I developed a new colour palette to work from, consisting of bold blues, purples and reds.

Sequence 1

OUGD605

The first sequence is very simple and uses a bright blue colour scheme to engage the viewer. Grid work on the text emhpasizes the idea of ‘Design’. I also brought characters into the design to add a bit more fun and personality.

Digital Storyboard

Creating these made it alot easier for me to work out the things I needed to learn how to do on After Effects, as well as working out timing and sound.

After Effects

OUGD605

After nothing but a couple of tutorials, I began teaching myself how to animate the sequences using a process of mainly trail and error.
