Direction
Studio Brief_2 Leeds Print Festival
Considering the brief was completely free rein, I decided to respond by doing something that I enjoyed and was exited by. Character illustration is without a doubt the biggest thing that inspires me within the creative industry and I have always wanted to be recognized as a character designer and illustrator, as well as a graphic designer. Although it is something I have always practiced, it is not somthing I had actually tried to get out there into the world, so I felt this was a perfect opportunity.
Contemporary Illustrators
OUGD605
I began by revitalizing the right side of my brain by looking into the contemporary illustrators, character designers and printmakers who’s work influences me; Mr Penfold, Tea Wei, Tony Riff, Tommaso Spugna Di Spigna and Barry Mcgee just to name a few.

Euphoria
OUGD605
I felt that to take this to the next stage I needed to develop a concept behind what I was going to do, instead of simply just illustrating some characters. I began thinking about facial expressions and after further debate was led to the idea of Euphoria. The strange and humorous expressions stood out to me and they felt could direct some quite comedic, engaging and unique outcomes. The main thing I wanted to communicate was humor.

Sketches
Studio Brief_2 Leeds Print Festival
Sketches allowed me to develop the characters in a pretty short amount of time and create quite a variation. As well as this I really wanted the work to be hand produced as apposed to drawn digitally.
Screen Print
OUGD605
I decided that it would feel like I was cheating if I printed my designs digitally and considering it was a skill I have really wanted to develop this year I felt screenprinting was the perfect method of production.
I really tired to emphasize the expressions of euphoria within the characters.

Digital Development
OUGD605
I digitalised my hand drawn illustrations to develop them into a structured layout and also so I could experiment with colour the easiest and quickest way possible. I decided to offset the coloured fill from the outlines to give the illustrations more of a rough and unique aesthetic.

A series of colourful, quirky A4 screenprints that explore the expressions of euphoria.
Prints
OUGD605
I decided to use a textured white stock for my prints to really bring the designs to life and add quality so that they would stand out at the print fair. The fact that I printed so many by hand meant that each one was slightly different and unique.
