op to it, Cape Fear Families! Spring has arrived, and it’s time to plan out all the fun you’re going to have in the beautiful sunshine! North Carolina has always been the leader in springtime excitement. The Azalea Festival is the perfect way to start the season, but once you have your fill of flowers, there are plenty of other festivals across the state. I’ve gotten your list started for you on page 27 with Family Travel. Also, don’t miss out on all the Earth Day celebrations and activities throughout the month, including the Wilmington Earth Day Festival on the 27th at Hugh MacRae Park. April is Autism Awareness Month, and for this issue we have dedicated our time to finding an assortment of resources for everyone in our special needs community. Wilmington has always come together for its families, and we hope that all of us can take this month as an opportunity to find ways to lend a hand to someone that might need a little extra help with their special family needs. I hope everyone has a wonderful Spring Break, and Easter weekend. When my children were younger, we would make a list of all the Easter Egg Hunts and plot a course. It was always chaos trying to see how many we could make it to in one day, but it was so much fun and always memorable. If you want to give it a try, there is a good starting point on page 12. Good Luck!

Food Farmacy NourishNC has partnered with Nunnelee Clinic To Pilot the first “Food Farmacy” Program. NourishNC and New Hanover Regional Medical Center’s Nunnelee Pediatric Specialty Clinics will pilot the “Prescription Food Program.” The Nunnelee clinic provides access to more than 30 pediatric physician specialists, physician assistants, and nurse practitioners dedicated to the treatment and management of children with chronic medical conditions. During appointments, Nunnelee’s clinicians will assess children for food insecurity using the Hunger Vital Sign screening tool. Children found to be struggling with hunger and food insecurity, will be provided with a box of non-perishable food containing more than 25 strategic meals. Each child will also receive a “prescription” for 15-20 pounds of fresh produce, lean ground turkey, and wheat bread which can be picked up at NourishNC. Additionally, the food box will contain a resource guide for children and families to find assistance – like how to get enrolled on the NourishNC Backpack Program. If the program is successful, NourishNC will expand it to multiple pediatric clinics. NourishNC is committed to building happy and healthy kids. They know that health is more than the absence of disease. It is an optimum state of well-being: mental, physical, emotional, and spiritual. Health is wholeness, and many factors can play a role in determining health. Access to nutritious food is one of those key factors. Visit www.nourishnc.org for more information.

2019 Earth Day Celebration This year’s theme is “Change Your Actions, Change the Planet.” The theme was selected to highlight how our actions as humans directly impact our planet, and our planet directly impacts humans. We all have a responsibility to take better care of Mother Earth. We want people to walk away from this year’s festival with ideas and actions that they can take as individuals to help restore and protect our planet. We hope you all will rally behind us on this theme. Where: Hugh MacRae Park When: April 27, 12-6pm Cost: Free Kids’ EcoZone Area Wilmington’s 2019 Earth Day celebration is a family-friendly event encouraging children of all ages to become more aware of our planet. We are happy to announce the return of the Nature Brigade Parade to the Earth Day activities this year. We are returning to the roots of the Earth Day event and including a nature inspired walking parade. The parade is called the “Nature Brigade Parade” and it will be led by Mark Herbert’s Rapping Red Oak (Futureshine Entertainment) from 3:45-4:00 pm. We will start the parade at the kids tent at 3:45pm and walk a short path around the perimeter of the Earth Day festivities and end up in front of the main stage and an ECO jam with the Rapping Red Oak and the “Nature Brigaders” (including members of Cosmic groove lizards). Calling all people who want to dress up as your favorite flora or fauna creature. Kid’s can bring their own costumes or make costumes from recycled materials in the Kid’s Zone! Let’s make this parade an event to remember!

Be a Looker Campaign The warmer months are upon us, and with that, the roads fill with bikes and pedestrians. Not only that, soon Wilmington will be implementing a Bike Share program. We all know how dangerous it can be for bikes and pedestrians in Wilmington. As drivers, we can help by Being a Looker. The Be a Looker Campaign was started by the WMPO for the months of April through September to educate drivers on bike and pedestrian safety. Everyone should be conscious of the road and those who use it. Learn how this campaign is working to keep everyone on the Cape Fear roads safe at www.wmpo.org/bealooker.

Therapy horseback riding Coastal Therapeutic Riding Program believes that every person should be given the opportunity to experience life from the back of a horse. Horses can aid in the physical, spiritual, and mental development of all humans. This program was created to give Wilmington’s special needs community members a place to develop their self-esteem as well as their muscles. Horsemanship lessons meet special riders at their ability. How Does This Work? • A variety of games • Hippotherapy • Attainable obstacles to stretch riders physically and mentally • Foster friendshsips, self-confidence, and joy All of Coastal’s horses are P.A.T.H. certified and extremely capable of handling all types of abilities. Audit one of their lessons and see joy in the purest form, and even a little magic. Visit www.coastalriding.org for more information.

Stuffed and Chocolate Bunnies Only, Please A cute fluffy bunny at Easter makes an adorable present and photo for social media sharing, but adopting a bunny at Easter is not a good idea. Contrary to Eastertime hype, rabbits and small children are not a good match. Another misconception is that rabbits are passive and cuddly. They are ground-loving creatures who feel frightened and insecure when held and restrained. Children like a companion they can hold, carry, and cuddle, just as they do their favorite stuffed animal. It is unreasonable to expect a child to be able to take full responsibility for the care of a rabbit, or to make a 10-year commitment to anything! All too often, the child loses interest, and the rabbit ends up neglected or abandoned. Some people think rabbits are a “low-maintenance” pet. In fact, they require almost as much work as a dog. They must be housetrained. The house must be bunny-proofed, or Thumper will chew electrical cords, rugs, books, and furniture. They must be spayed or neutered, or they will mark your house with feces and urine. They must live indoors, as members of the family. Rabbits kept in hutches outdoors have an average lifespan of about one year; house rabbits can live 8 to 10 years. So this Easter, avoid any live pets as gifts, and stick to the stuffed kind you can cuddle.

Egg Allergy Help in Time for Easter An egg allergy is no joke, but some children who have it could safely eat eggs after immunotherapy treatment, a new study claims. “Egg allergy is one of the most common food allergies and usually appears in early childhood. It has significant risk for severe allergic reactions and negatively affects quality of life for children with the allergy,” said first author Dr. Edwin Kim, director of the Food Allergy Initiative at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. Though the allergy seems to go away with age, it can last into the second decade of life. “Any treatment that can allow the introduction of egg into the diet of someone with egg allergy provides nutritional benefits and peace of mind for the patient and their family,” Kim said. This study included 5- to 11-year-olds who were allergic to egg. The study showed that some participants could eat both both baked and concentrated egg. It’s important to talk to your doctor about introducing anything new into a child’s diet when they have allergies, but if you are interested in this study, speak with your child’s allergist about how this may help.
