7 Tips for Safer Generator Usage This Summer Generators are critical during severe weather events, when the power can go out. They can bring power to remote job sites, aid in disaster recovery and assist homeowners in emergencies. During hurricane season, the Outdoor Power Equipment Institute (OPEI), reminds home and business owners to keep safety in mind when using generators. Additional tips include: #1 - Take stock of your generator. Make sure the equipment is in good working order before starting and using it. Do this before a storm hits.

AMY LEWIS, DDS Pediatric Dentist and Mom. I WILL TREAT YOUR KIDS WITH THE SAME COMPASSION AND CARE AS I DO MY OWN.

#2 – Install a battery-operated carbon monoxide detector in your home. This alarm will sound if dangerous levels of carbon monoxide enter the building. #3 - Have the right fuel on hand. Use the type of fuel recommended by the generator manufacturer to protect this important investment. It is illegal to use any fuel with more than 10% ethanol in outdoor power equipment. #4 - Ensure portable generators have plenty of ventilation. Generators should NEVER be used in an enclosed area or placed inside a home, a building, or a garage, even if the windows or doors are open. Place the generator outside and away from windows, doors, and vents that could allow carbon monoxide to drift indoors. #5 - Keep the generator dry. Do not use a generator in wet conditions. Cover and vent a generator. Model-specific tents or generator covers can be found online for purchase and at home centers and hardware stores. #6 - Only add fuel to a cool generator. Before refueling, turn the generator off and let it cool down. #7 - Do not use the generator to “backfeed” power into your home electrical system. Trying to power your home’s electrical wiring by “backfeeding” – where you plug the generator into a wall outlet – is dangerous. You could hurt utility workers and neighbors served by the same transformer. Backfeeding bypasses built-in circuit protection devices, so you could damage your electronics or start an electrical fire. For more information about outdoor power equipment visit www.opei.org

MIND AND BODY

Counseling for Screen Addiction

You Are Not Alone Campaign

In some homes, managing screen time is the source of a lot of stress and tension. It can often be downright toxic.

The New Hanover County Schools’ Public Relation Division launched the #YouAreNotAlone campaign recently to increase mental health awareness and help erase the surrounding stigmas. A new video entitled, “Buctown Lounge: #YouAreNotAlone” is part of the overall campaign designed to make more students, parents, and staff aware of the myriad of services and support systems that are available through NHCS and in our region.

In one of my favorite scenes in SCREENAGERS, we see Amaryllis, a grandmother raising her grandson Chris, in a counselor’s office getting help setting limits on violent video game playing for Chris who is having frequent meltdowns. The counselor gives the grandmother specific strategies to help establish and maintain screen time limits. Finding a coach or a counselor can be hard and often is compounded by the fact that many mental health professionals do not take insurance. This is in part because insurance companies grossly undervalue mental health care and reimburse at a low rate. But, coaching and counseling can come from many places, i.e., an insightful friend, a religious leader or congregant, a support group, or a relative, just to name a few. LEARN MORE Here are 3 Tech Talk Tuesdays that might be helpful for your family this summer: The Art of Asking People to Put their Phone Away www.screenagersmovie.com/tech-talk-tuesdays/the-art-of-asking-people-to-put-their-phone-away The New Summertime Angst, Unplugging at Camp www.screenagersmovie.com/tech-talk-tuesdays/the-new-summer-camp-anxiety-unplugging-angst Vacation from Notifications www.screenagersmovie.com/tech-talk-tuesdays/a-vacations-from-notifications-try-turning-offnotifications-on-a-summer-trip

According to the National Alliance on Mental Health (NAMI), approximately one in five youth ages 13-18 experience a severe mental disorder at some point in their lives. Unfortunately, stigmas around mental health issues continue and in some instances, these stigmas can cause people to refuse or be hesitant about getting help when it is needed. The NHCS Student Support Services Division (https://www.nhcs.net/divisions/studentsupport-services) includes an entire team designed to help students in all areas including counseling, school health nurses, bullying prevention, trauma and crisis support, and ensuring the resources are available. In addition to Student Support Services, the district has strong community partnerships with many local mental health providers such as Trillium, Coastal Horizons, Wilmington Health Department, and others. Through the partnership with Coastal Horizons, a Wilmington Health Access for Teens (WHAT) Clinic is located at the four traditional high schools - Ashley, Hoggard, Laney and New Hanover. W.H.A.T. Clinics offer routine physicals, vaccinations and immunizations, substance abuse screening and counseling, and mental health counseling. These services are conducted on the campus of each participating school. Youtube- “Buctown Lounge: #YouAreNotAlone”

T

alk it Out NC, a state-sponsored initiative to stop underage drinking, and Coastal Horizons, want parents to be aware of the significant dangers associated with teens and drinking.

On of the most important things that parents definitely need to be aware of is how alcohol or any other substance affects the developing adolescent brain. The brain continues to develop until the age of 25 and youth who use alcohol are at greater risk of developing an alcohol addiction.

Dr. Raaj Amin

Coming in August... BACK TO SCHOOL GUIDE

The National Institute of Drug Addiction (NIDA) is a great, credible website to access information on how alcohol and other drugs affect the brain. The institute does extensive research on the brain and substance use, and there are some educational, fun resources available for parents/ adults and youth. NIDA for Teens also offers videos, games, blogs and more on how drugs affect the body and brain.

Signs of drug use/addiction: • Change in friends and hangouts • Changes in mood, motivation, attitude • Absenteeism at work or school • Increased need for cash • Bloodshot eyes or enlarged pupils • Sudden weight changes (gain or loss) • Secretive behaviors; lying • Tremors in the hands • Ignoring once-loved activities The number one place where kids access alcohol is their home or the home of someone else. Prevent access by: • Parents/adults should talk with their youth about not using alcohol until they are of age and the impact it has on their health • Monitor alcohol in the home • Instead of keeping a case of beer in the refrigerator, keep only 2-3. It is easier to keep count and monitor a small amount than it is a case. • Store alcohol out-of-reach, out-of-sight, or lock-up your alcohol (see your local hardware store for easy to install cabinet locks) • Do not provide alcohol to your youth or host underage drinking parties • Even if you do not have children in your home, be aware of children and/or other individuals who have access to your home

The August 2019 issue of Wilmington Parent will feature our Annual Back To School Guide. LOCAL FUN

S

ummertime beach days are one of the perks of living in Wilmington, but sometimes you just need to escape the heat. Staying cool doesn’t have to be boring! From cool activities to places to kick back and chill, this is your guide to help you find a break from the sun. Wilmington Icehouse

Public skating sessions every day make this an easy and inexpensive way to make a last minute “cool off” plan. Skates are available to rent and parents can hang out in the cafe area while keeping an eye on little ones through the big windows. If you kids enjoy their time on the ice, Learn to Skate classes and youth hockey teams are offered year round.

Kid’s summer movies Regal Mayfaire Stadium 16 & IMAX at 900 Town Center Dr has $1 movies every Tuesday and Wednesday at 10am. Stone Theatre The Pointe 14 at 2223 Blockbuster Rd. offers a different schedule of $1 movies every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday at 10am, and $1 kids drinks & $1 kids popcorn. Affordable movies, a relaxing break and air conditioning!

Jungle Rapids Indoor Arcade Although a trip to the arcade might bring to mind endless money pouring directly from your bank account into unbeatable machines, you can avoid this from happening by taking advantage of some deals. Their Triple Play deal is only $25 and you get 2 dry activities and a $10 arcade card. You can also have the kids do some work around the house to earn extra arcade money. When they have to work for those dollars, they tend to not waste them. Jungle Rapids also has a new indoor activity - Spin Zone! These are spinning bumper cars with a wild “Chaos Mode” ride at the end.

NC Aquarium My children have grown up spending their days at the Fort Fisher Aquarium, and they never get tired of a visit to their old friends Luna and Maverick. Every day is a little different at the aquarium as new animals come to stay and the coastline habitats remind us how wondrous and fragile it feels to live at the coast. Also, Lorikeet Landing is back and a $1 nectar cup promises a flock of birds perched on your child for the perfect photo op.

Education and Fun at Local Museums Wilmington is home to many historical and educational opportunities, and our local museums maintain a focus on families and children. With so many offering special events and daily activities, you can always find a cool way to keep the kids busy for the day. Here are just a few: Wilmington Railroad Museum located downtown and offering a glimpse of the magic of rail transportation, they also have story time a couple days a week Wilmington Children’s Museum Never a dull moment here! Daily activities allow kids to get their hands on the real world through cooking, art, language, science and more. Cape Fear Museum of History These wonderful people have found a way for history to be fascinating for children! Points for mom who gets a break from the heat while providing an educational opportunity and the kids have a blast.

Library Adventures Oh the places you will go! When Dr. Seuss said those now famous words, I’m pretty sure he meant for us to all start our adventures in libraries. Free, cozy, air conditioned and the librarians always have an activity ready to go after the books are all checked out. Here are the local branches: Main Library - 201 Chestnut St Northeast Regional - 1241 Military Cutoff Rd Pine Valley - 3802 S. College Rd. *Brand New!* Pleasure Island - 1401 N. Lake Park Blvd.

SCHOOL NOTES School Safety Anonymous Reporting System NC State Superintendent Mark Johnson announced today that the state education agency has contracted with Sandy Hook Promise (SHP) to provide a statewide Say Something Anonymous Reporting System in the 2019-20 school year. The Say Something program, including an anonymous mobile tip app, is a school safety program designed to change and save lives by teaching students, educators, and administrators how to recognize the signs and signals of those who may be at risk of hurting themselves or others and to anonymously report this information through the mobile tip app, the website or the telephone crisis hotline. Through the Say Something program, students, parents, educators and others can download the app and share school safety concerns with school administrators and school resource officers at schools, who will respond appropriately. More than 5,100 schools nationwide are currently using Sandy Hook Promise’s anonymous reporting system. North Carolina will be the second statewide partnership for Sandy Hook Promise, with implementation of an anonymous reporting system that will encourage student participation in protecting themselves and their peers. The North Carolina Center for Safer Schools, part of the Department of Public Instruction, piloted an app in five school districts in 2015 and 2016. In that pilot, the center received tips related to bullying (39 percent), danger (25 percent), drugs (24 percent), weapons (5 percent), fighting (5 percent); and underage drinking (2 percent). In 2018, the North Carolina General Assembly included development of a statewide app in the 2018-19 budget bill. Tips can be sent in via web, a phone hotline, or through the app – including photos and videos. A crisis center staffed 24/7 by trained counselors will triage, categorize and deliver tip information. Tips will be categorized as either “life safety” or “non-life safety” based on the incident and information the school-based teams provide. The Crisis Center will notify schoolbased representatives after hours when tips are life threatening and, in cases of imminent threat, contact local 911 dispatch.

Super high schoolers from New Hanover County graduate from N.C. School of Science & Mathematics Local students were among nearly 350 from all across North Carolina who graduated as members of the residential Class of 2019 of the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics on the school’s Durham campus Saturday, May 25, 2019. Students with high abilities in math and science began their studies at their local high school, then as sophomores applied to the selective world-class public high school with statewide reach. Those accepted lived on the Durham campus in dormitories during their junior and senior years, taking high-level classes in not just science, technology, engineering, and mathematics but also in the humanities. The state of North Carolina and private, philanthropic donors made this possible at no cost to the students for tuition, room, board, or books. Each year the graduation ceremony at NCSSM provides a concentrated snapshot of the intellect found throughout North Carolina’s schools. Three-quarters of the state’s counties and every region in the state were represented by the graduating class, with the student body hailing from 181 urban, suburban and rural high schools. The school counts among its alumni scores of entrepreneurs, educators, physicians, researchers, teachers and some famous figures, such as NASA astronaut Christina Hammock-Koch -- currently orbiting Earth aboard the International Space Station -- and Rhiannon Giddens, a founder of the Carolina Chocolate Drops string band and recipient of a MacArthur fellowship. NCSSM is now building a second residential campus in Morganton, North Carolina, near Hickory, to open in 2021, which will allow it to serve an additional 300 students and enhance its distance educational offerings.
