LOCAL NEWS Back to School Cell Phone Guide Thinking it’s time for your child to have their first cell phone? This doesn’t need to be complicated and stressful. With some helpful tips from Andrew Moore-Crispin, Director of Content at Ting Mobile, you can be well on your way to preparing your children for responsible phone ownership: 1. Give the phone a clean slate. Ting’s survey reported that 61% of kids’ first phones were hand-me-downs. If you’re giving your child a gently used phone, remove all existing data (i.e. photos, emails, browser history), leaving only the standard pre-installed apps like email, phone and messaging. 2. Connect to Wi-Fi and set mobile data limits. The last thing you want is kids using a ton of mobile data, so defaulting to your home Wi-Fi prevents data shocks on your phone bill. 3. Add important and emergency numbers. Make sure to add important and backup phone numbers (i.e. parents, neighbors, grandparents, nanny) so kids can get in touch from day one. 4. Enable parental controls. Think of parental controls as training wheels so kids can use the Internet respectfully and responsibly. iOS and Android devices offer parental control systems that parents can use to set controls, from screen time limits to app restrictions.

Thalian Association Community Theatre Announces Scholarship Recipient Thalian Association Community Theatre (TACT), North Carolina’s oldest community theatre, is proud to announce that Nevaeh G. Woolens is the recipient of the $2000 Donn Ansell Scholarship and the $500 Pat Hingle Scholarship. The two scholarships are administered annually by Thalian Association Community Theatre and awarded to a deserving high school senior who has proven to be a serious student of the theatre with plans to further their theatrical education following graduation. Applicants must have been active with the community theatre association as performers, actors or technicians. Nevaeh is the daughter of Charlene Cliborne and William Woolens of Wilmington. She has appeared in seventeen local youth theatre productions and worked behind the scenes in ten shows for Thalian Association, Performance Club, and E. A. Laney High School. Nevaeh is a member of the Laney Adventurers and has sung with the All County Chorus for many years. A senior at E. A. Laney High School, she plans to attend Winthrop University studying musical theatre with plans to participate in vocal ensemble. After graduation Nevaeh hopes to start a youth theatre company.

Carolina Gymnastics Shines at National Competition Wilmington’s own Carolina Gymnastics Xcel Rhythmic Team placed 3rd in the country in the Xcel Division at the Open Championships in Indianapolis, Indiana. The Carolina Gymnastics Academy top scorer was Flannery Nunn, a rising 5th grader at Codington Elementary.

5. Discuss privacy and personal safety with kids. It’s never too early to talk to kids about staying safe online. Having an open conversation around Internet safety will help kids develop mature awareness of the Internet. 6. Turn your child’s phone into a GPS Tracker. Google Maps has a cool feature that lets you share locations in real-time, so parents can see where kids are and supervise remotely. This is a great safety tip for slightly older kids who wish to go out with their friends on their own while letting parents know where they are during the day.

Back To School To-Do's: Folders, Pencils, Lunchbox, Dentist.

Smithsonian Magazine 15th Annual Museum Day Smithsonian magazine has designated Saturday, September 21, 2019 as the 15th annual Museum Day, an initiative in which participating museums across the United States open their doors for free to those who download a branded ticket. The annual event allows museums, zoos and cultural centers from all 50 states to emulate the spirit of the Smithsonian Institution’s Washington, D.C.-based facilities, which offer free admission every day. Museum Day goes beyond getting visitors through museum doors—it acts as a springboard to empower and help advance the hopes and ambitions of the public, particularly school-aged children and those in underrepresented communities. It represents a national commitment to access, equity and inclusion. This year, Museum Day will celebrate the Smithsonian Year of Music, an institutionwide initiative celebrating the Smithsonian’s vast musical collections and resources through 365 days of music-related programming. Music is not only a reflection of human creativity and innovation, but also a key method of communication and cross-cultural exchange and understanding. The Smithsonian Year of Music crosses disciplines, bringing together music-related resources in art, history, culture, science and education. The Smithsonian invites participating museums to create programming to support this initiative and highlight the world’s rich musical heritage. Those wishing to attend and participate in Museum Day 2019 can visit Smithsonian. com/museumday to learn more and download a Museum Day ticket beginning on August 15. Each ticket grants the ticket holder and one guest free access to any participating museum on September 21, 2019. One ticket is permitted per email address. A list of participating museums, which will be continually updated, can be found at Smithsonian.com/museumday/search.

MIND AND BODY

How to Minimize Pain Caused by Backpacks

July 2019 Races

Back to school means loading up those new backpacks with all those new supplies. You also want to ensure your child or adolescent properly carries a backpack to minimize strain and pain on the lower back and other regions. • Ensure that your backpack isn’t too heavy and has equally distributed weight. A backpack should weigh no more than 10% of a child’s body weight. • A waist strap on the backpack can add increased support. • Encourage your child or teen to use both straps, properly positioned so the backpack sits steadily on their back. • The fit is crucial with backpacks to evenly distribute weight. Adjust the shoulder straps so the backpack fits high on the back and shoulder straps are comfortable. The pack should sit above your hips and not extend past the waist. • Encourage your child or teen to re-adjust straps while wearing different thicknesses of clothing so they always fit properly. • Make sure the backpack doesn’t sway from side to side, leading to chaffing and rubbing against your back, as you walk. • Encourage them to wear a backpack judiciously. Putting it in a locker or setting it on the bus floor, for instance, can reduce strain on the back. • If your child or teen suffers from constant lower back pain, look for backpacks specifically designed for back pain. • Read reviews before you purchase online to find the best kids’ backpack. A chiropractor might also be able to recommend good backpacks for back pain.

We will make sure you know where to go, and what to do. Just bring your fast shoes and your best smile. This event is well organized with the needs of the participant in mind. This isn’t a five hour track fiasco. Our goal is to get racers on and off the track with smiles on their face. Join the group on Facebook and register online at its-go-time.com.

Prevent Tick-Borne Diseases While Enjoying the Outdoors You’ve grabbed your water bottle, sunscreen and hat for a hike in the park or some gardening. Add a bit of tick protection to your must-have items when you head out the door for an adventure, to garden or play. Continue enjoying the outdoors by enlisting a variety of strategies to limit your risk of exposure to ticks and the disease pathogens they transmit. • Wear light colored clothing to more easily spot the tick before it moves onto your skin. Wear long pants and tuck them into your socks and tuck your shirt into your pants. Ticks often gain access through pant legs or shirttails and crawl up looking for a place to settle in and feed. • Consider spraying your clothing with an insecticide labeled for repelling and killing ticks. Spray your clothing and let it dry before wearing. Or invest in pre-treated clothing for gardening, hiking or other outdoor activities. Read and follow label directions carefully. • Always conduct a tick check on yourself, children and pets after spending time outdoors. Studies show that regular tick checks are the most effective way to prevent diseases transmitted by ticks. Ticks can feed anywhere but are often found in and around the ears and hair, inside the bellybutton, under the arms, around the waist, back of the knees and between the legs. • Check your clothing inside and out. Ticks can survive for several days in the house and even when washed in warm or hot water. An hour in the dryer on high heat will kill them. • Shower within two hours after spending time outdoors. The water can help dislodge any unattached ticks plus this provides a second opportunity to conduct a tick check. Studies found this practice greatly reduces the risk of tick-borne diseases. • Consider creating a tick safe zone area where your family frequents and limit your time in tick infested areas. Widen pathways, prune trees to increase light, exclude deer and discourage rodents to reduce the risk of exposure. And if additional control is needed to create a tick safe zone, consider using a pesticide like Summit Tick & Flea Spray (homegardenandhomestead.com/how-to-get-rid-of-ticks) that contains permethrin. You’ll only need small amounts at the right time of the year for effective control. One application in spring or fall is usually sufficient for managing the ticks that can transmit Lyme disease.

We believe that if oral health and overall health are to be maintained, it is essential to work with the family as a unit as well as the child as an individual. Our goal is to promote and help families achieve optimal oral health and overall health, while helping to shape children into happy adults with a lifelong commitment to dental health. Back-toschool time is a perfect time to have a teeth cleaning and check-up. That way everyone starts the year putting their best foot forward as well as their smile!

Schedule your child’s exam at least four weeks prior to the starting the sport’s season and/or the academic year. This allows ample time to seek referrals for any new health or wellness concerns, to rehab any lingering injuries and to ensure your child is ready physically and emotionally for a great new year. Sure, it gives your pediatrician a chance to provide a thorough physical exam. Yes, it can clear your child to play sports. But it also offers an important opportunity to discuss emotional or social concerns. For older children, it’s a good chance to address important issues such as drinking, smoking, drugs, sexual activity, and depression. Finally, pediatricians can discuss topics such as diet, exercise options, vision screenings and more.

LOCAL DOCTORS COMMENT ON VACCINATIONS

W

hile infection is rarely on anyone’s mind now that we have passed through cold and flu season, recent outbreaks of preventable illnesses across the country have continued to highlight the importance of timely and thorough administration of vaccines to both children and adults. Hanover Pediatrics strives to provide the best possible care for your children, and a critical component of this is immunization. While we recognize the natural feelings of concern regarding this practice, it remains the single best tool in the medical arsenal to help prevent infectious diseases. Controversy surrounding immunization is not new. Reports of complications linked to vaccines have been a part of immunization discussions since before the beginning of large-scale inoculation in this country and abroad. While these stories can be both frightening and suspicious, the truth remains that vaccines are safe and effective. They are clearly superior to natural infection in multiple ways and protective to others in addition to the individual receiving them. It is useful in any debate to familiarize yourself with both sides of an argument. We have attempted, in this practice, to read as much as we are able regarding anti-vaccination theory, informed often by parental and

www.wilmingtonparent.com

patient concerns. If you are worried about vaccines, or even adamantly opposed to them, we would encourage you to spend some time studying the rationales for a pro-vaccine stance; even if it does not change your overall opinion. Vaccination is a social contract. It is an agreement that we have an obligation to protect our fellow citizens and to provide a safe space in which we can co-exist. This freedom tempers the ability to choose what interventions we do or do not choose to have in our children— hence general statutes requiring compulsory immunization. While pediatric offices do not enforce the general statute, it is our responsibility as medical professionals and citizens in a broader community to make sure that patients and families are presented with correct information regarding immunization. We at Hanover Pediatrics remain committed to an open and honest discussion of all issues facing child health. Given the explosion of access to information over the past two decades, it is critical for patients and their families to have a source of information they can trust. We will continue to attempt to be equal to that task, so that our patients may live their lives fully and safely.

SCHOOL NOTES Murray Middle Awarded NC GreenPower Solar Schools Grant

Give a Teacher a Hand Kids have a long list of supplies to bring the first day of class, and often that includes classroom supplies. Teachers don’t always want to burden the parents with extra requests, but if you have a little extra to give, here is a list of items that teachers agree they need the most: • Hand sanitizer- there is NEVER enough • Tissues- little noses run, don’t let them run out or tissues • Classroom rewards- stickers, erasers, and small toys are always appreciated • Construction paper- kids fly though this at lightning speed • Ziplock bags- these help with organization and sending home delicate items • Number 2 pencils- the school year starts with an abundance, but they don’t last • Classroom snacks- check with you teacher to see what’s allowed • Printer paper- teachers usually run out of the yearly allotment

Murray Middle School has accepted a grant from NC Solar Schools to install solar energy panels at the school. The NC GreenPower Solar Schools grant program, supported by the State Employees Credit Union members, awarded five North Carolina schools with educational solar installations. Each school will be awarded a grant worth up to $10,000 for the installation of an educational solar photovoltaic (PV) array on the campus of their school. They join 19 other grant recipients since the pilot program launched in 2015. The NC GreenPower Board of Directors’ Review Committee met this spring to evaluate applications and make selections for 2019’s pilot program. The selected schools will utilize the NC GreenPower fundraising website, my.NCGreenPower. org to raise their additional funds by Friday, September 27, 2019. My NCGreenPower is an online community that allows advocates of a cleaner, greener environment to join together for fundraising. Donations as little as $1 can be made to support any campaign. The NC GreenPower Solar Schools program is open to all public and private K-12 schools in North Carolina. The installed solar PV systems serve as educational tools in the classroom but also provide an energy impact, likely producing enough renewable energy to power a school’s main office. The solar arrays have generated an average of 8,026 kilowatt (kW) hours annually, potentially saving schools up to $803 per year. For updates about the pilot, visit www.ncgreenpower.org/solar-schools.

Hoping to save your kids the pain of a flu shot this fall, opting instead for the painless nasal spray vaccine? You’re in luck! According to a March 14, 2019, statement from the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), the organization recommends that all children ages six months and older receive the either injectable flu vaccine or the nasal spray vaccine for the best protection during the upcoming 2019-20 flu season. This year’s recommendation differs slightly from last year, when AAP cited a preference for the flu shot over the nasal spray. For this upcoming 2019-2020 flu season, however, the AAP and US Centers for Disease Control and Protection (CDC) also support the use of the nasal spray vaccine—or live attenuated influenza vaccine (LAIV4). The goal? To provide the best protection and adequate vaccination coverage in children of all ages. “All children six months and older should receive the flu vaccine, in whatever form their pediatrician recommends,” said Bonnie Maldonado, MD, FAAP, chair of the AAP Committee on Infectious Diseases. “Every year, we are never sure if the vaccine strains are going to be perfectly matched up with incoming flu strains, but based on the information that we have now, we believe the nasal spray is an acceptable option.” Bottom line: Make sure your kids receive the flu shot as soon as it becomes available, preferably by the end of October.
