Teaching Kids About Home Composting Cape Fear Shakespeare on the Green In association with the City of Wilmington, Cape Fear Shakespeare on the Green once again entertains us this summer with free outdoor performances at Greenfield Lake Amphitheater for ALL PERFORMANCES 8PM Gates open at 6:30 the whole family! productions will start with Love’s Come early andThis picnic year’s on the green, or enjoy a snack at our concession Labour’s Lost. This is aFREE hormone-driven ADMISSIONbattle of wits and genders. King Ferdinand and his buddies make an oath to swear Greenfield Lake Amphitheater ∙ off women for three years inINFORMATION the name of study. The Princess of FOR MORE 910∙399∙2878 capefearshakespeare.com France arrives with her ladies on matters of state. Will the guys “Our future, continuing the tradition of Eastern North Carolina’s oldest and largest Free outdoor Shakespeare Festival.” stay true to their oath or fall victim to the lady’s charms? The banter flies as chaos and comedy ensue. Will love be gained or will it be lost? TAKE CAROLINA BEACH ROAD TO TENNESSEE AVENUE
Do you tell your kids to stop playing in the dirt? Give up that losing battle and make their dirt play more productive with composting. Composting is very simple, costs virtually nothing and is one of the easiest outdoor family activities you can do. Here’s some quick information to share with kids about the benefits and how-to’s of composting. • Composting creates a medium for plants that is filled with the nutrients they need to flourish. • Compost is made up of things you already have in your home. • Composting helps the environment and reduces the trash we send to the landfills. • A major win/win/win! For more information on how your family can get started, visit the Education Center at the New Hanover County Arboretum, 6206 Oleander Drive, Wilmington NC. Or call 910-798-7660 for more information.
Love Labour’s Lost Dates: June 6, 7, 8, 9, 14, 15, 16, 20, 22, 23, 28, 29 & 30 The second production is Shakespeare on a Midsummer Eve with those dates below: June 8, 11, 12, 13, 19, 25, 26, 27 All performances start at 8pm, and the gates open at 6:30pm. Come early and picnic on the green, or enjoy a snack at the concession. For more information visit www.capefearshakespeare.com.

Making an Impact One Straw at a Time During a recent screening of the short film “STRAWS,” Producer/Director Linda Booker asks the audience made up of children of all ages how many of them use straws. As you would expect, every hand is raised. Then she asked a more pointed question, “After viewing the film; How many of you will use less straws?” Enthusiastically, all hands rise. STRAWS, an award-winning documentary film highlighting the devastating levels of straws and other plastic pollution in our waterways and oceans, leaves audiences with a clear understanding of the problems caused by plastic pollution and empower individuals to be part of the solution. Filmmaker Booker, commented, “The greatest privilege I’ve had with this film is witnessing young people watch STRAWS and get excited to protect marine animals. With the STRAWS in Schools Impact Campaign we’re reaching thousands of kids who will view the film and then take action to end the use of plastic straws and other single-use plastics in their schools and communities.” Michael Kuehnert, STRAWS impact producer, says “We are excited about this program because it teaches students how to identify an environmental issue and do something about it. These new skills support the development of critical thinking and social change tools.” Booker’s goal is to bring Impact Campaign to North Carolina, especially in and around Wilmington because of its connection to the film. In STRAWS you will see scenes shot at The Blockade Runner Resort, one of the area’s first “Ocean Friendly Establishments,” The STRAWS lesson plans were funded in part by Plaine Products whose CEO Lindsey McCoy resides in Wilmington, STRAWS was an Official NC Premiere at Cucalorus Film Festival and the film includes images of Plastic Ocean Project’s Traveling Art exhibit “What Goes Around, Comes Around” by UNCW’s Bonnie Monteleone. Director of Photography, Blaire Johnson resides in Carolina Beach. For more information visit the website www. strawsfilm.com

Summer Pet Training Tips
Dogs and Bee Stings: What to Do If Your Pet is Stung If your pooch encounters a stinging bee or wasp this spring or summer, these steps can help soothe the pain. Remove the Stinger Honeybees leave their stingers behind when they sting. In fact, venom continues to enter your pet’s body for several minutes after a sting unless you remove the stinger. Don’t use your fingers to pull out the stinger, as you may accidentally force more venom into your pet’s skin. Instead, gently scrape the stinger off with the edge of a credit card and wash the skin with warm soapy water. If you can’t locate the stinger, give your furry friend a bath instead. Bathing can help dislodge the stinger and help soothe the skin. Treat Pain and Swelling Cold compresses offer a simple way to reduce pain, redness, or swelling. Cold washcloths, freezer gel packs, ice in a resealable bag, or bags of frozen vegetables make good compresses. If you use a frozen compress, be sure to wrap it in a towel to prevent frostbite. Leave the compress in place as long as your dog will allow but for no more than 20 minutes at a time. Oral Benadryl can also be helpful in reducing swelling. Before you offer your furry friend the over-the-counter medication, ask the veterinarian if it’s a good idea. Since pets require different dosages than humans, you’ll want to be sure to give the veterinarian a call. Recognize Danger Signs Signs of a possible allergic reaction may include: • Pale Gums • Vomiting • Hives • Lack of Energy • Severe Swelling • Difficulty Breathing • Collapse If you notice any of these signs, take your dog to the veterinarian immediately. Visit your local emergency clinic if the vet’s office happens to be closed when the sting occurs. treatment.
Choose your dog’s name wisely and be respectful of it. Of course you’ll want to pick a name for your new puppy or dog that you love, but for the purposes of training it also helps to consider a short name ending with a strong consonant. This allows you to say his name so that he can always hear it clearly. A strong ending (i.e. Jasper, Jack, Ginger) perks up puppy ears—especially when you place a strong emphasize at the end. Associate their name with pleasant, fun things, rather than negative. The goal is for him to think of his name the same way he thinks of other great stuff in his life, like “walk,” “cookie,” or “dinner!” Teach him to come when called. Come Jasper! Good boy! Teaching him to come is the command to be mastered first and foremost. And since he’ll be coming to you, your alpha status will be reinforced. Get on his level and tell him to come using his name. When he does, make a big deal using positive reinforcement. Then try it when he’s busy with something interesting. You’ll really see the benefits of perfecting this command early as he gets older. Reward his good behavior. Reward your puppy or dog’s good behavior with positive reinforcement. Use treats, toys, love, or heaps of praise. Let him know when’s he’s getting it right. Likewise, never reward bad behaviour; it’ll only confuse him. Take care of the jump up. Puppies love to jump up in greeting. Don’t reprimand him, just ignore his behavior and wait ‘til he settles down before giving positive reinforcement. Never encourage jumping behavior by patting or praising your dog when he’s in a “jumping up” position. Turn your back on him and pay him no attention. Teach him on “dog time.” Puppies and dogs live in the moment. Two minutes after they’ve done something, it’s forgotten about. When he’s doing something bad, try your chosen training technique right away so he has a chance to make the association between the behavior and the correction. Consistent repetition will reinforce what’s he’s learned.
Pet of the Month
Discourage him from biting or nipping. Instead of scolding him, a great way to put off your mouthy canine is to pretend that you’re in great pain when he’s biting or nipping you. He’ll be so surprised he’s likely to stop immediately. If this doesn’t work, try trading a chew toy for your hand or pant leg. The swap trick also works when he’s into your favorite shoes. He’ll prefer a toy or bone anyway. If all else fails, break up the biting behavior, and then just ignore him.
Chris Ponton and Aubrey Meet Chris Ponton the owner of The Pet’s Pal Inn and her dog Aubrey. Aubrey is a therapy dog with Canines for Service
End training sessions on a positive note. Excellent boy! Good job, Jasper! He’s worked hard to please you throughout the training. Leave him with lots of praise, a treat, some petting, or five minutes of play. This guarantees he’ll show up at his next class with his tail wagging—ready to work!

Check with Cape Fear Volunteer Center for local needs, or call Good Shepherd Ministries and see have they have any food service openings.
Go Wild! Take your dogs for a walk around the neighborhood or, if you don’t have any pets, visit a pet store. They may want to take home a new friend so be sure you know what you’re getting into. For an unforgettable good time, take Dad horseback riding. If you have the option, visit a local zoo and really go wild! The North Carolina Zoo is offering $2 off admission for Dad on Father’s Day. GO THE EXTRA MILE for your children
Get Sporty Outside Take Dad disc golfing at Arrowhead Park, 720 Arnold Rd, or for a bike ride. Head to Myrtle Beach for plenty of miniature golfing options, and only keep score if it makes it more fun. Take Dad kayaking on Greenfield Lake and check out the turtles, possibly an alligator or two, but don’t rock the boat.
Foodie Fun Whether Dad is the world’s best chef or a novice in the kitchen, food can be fun. Try letting the kids and Dad plan and make a meal together. Cooking and connecting will nourish your body and your soul.
At Home If you’re not up for going out, you can still connect with the kids at home. Play some interactive video games such as Wii sports or Let’s Dance. Snuggle up to watch a movie or a show. Invite Dad to spend some time in the kid’s room playing with their toys. He might be surprised at how much fun they all have.

MIND AND BODY
How to Talk to Your Kids About Food How you explain the importance of eating healthy food could be the differenc between a food battle and food excitement. Here are some phrases that might change your child’s outlook on the food you serve. May Not Help “Apples are good for you” “Carrots will turn you into a bunny” “This food will help you grow” “Salad is healthy” “Blueberries have antioxidants in them” “White food isn’t good for you”
Water Safety at Home While drowning is 100% preventable, nearly 300 children under the age of five drown in pools and spas every year. The number one way to prevent drownings is through proactive parent supervision, but most drownings occur when a child was thought to be in the house but slipped outside without anyone knowing.
May Help A Lot “Red food gives you a strong heart” “Orange food helps you see in the dark” “Yellow food helps your body heal cuts” “Green food helps you fight off sickness” “Blue and purple foods give you a strong brain” “White foods give you energy”
1. Install high locks Put locks on doors and windows that are high and out of reach. Some drownings happen because a parent didn’t know their toddler figured out the door knob. Don’t forget sliding glass doors as well. 2. Get door and window alarms Families should install simple contact alarms for doors and windows that lead to the pool. The ring-type alarm sounds every time a door opens, alerting an adult. 3. No doggy doors Pet doors should be permanently sealed off. Toddlers are known to mimic their pets and may follow them right out the doggy door and into the pool area, putting both child and pet at risk. 4.Pool alarms Surface pool alarms will trigger a sound inside the home when the water’s surface is broken. However, a small child could quietly walk down the pool steps and slip under water without setting off the alarm, so they cannot be used alone. 5. Child immersion alarms When you first move into a home, consider using a wearable immersion alarm, like the Safety Turtle, which triggers an alarm inside the house if the sensor gets wet. This is especially important when you are unfamiliar with the area.

NEW PRODUCTS CGear Sand-Free Towel After a trip to the beach, the worst is trying to clean and dry soggy and sandy beach towels that leave a mess all over your house. And, with a normal beach towel it doesn’t matter how careful you are when you place your beach towel down in the sand, all it takes is one iota of a breeze to get pesky sand particles everywhere. CGear Sand-Free has created a new sand-free beach towel that actually repels sand instead of tracking it home. The specialty dual-weave fabric traps sand underneath it. Any sand that is kicked onto the top of the mat will filter through and stay trapped. Plus, the towel is quick drying, so it is ready to use again within minutes of toweling off and it won’t mildew.

Beginning in Pompeii with skip-the-line entry, families will be guided through the ancient ruins by their own personal archaeologist, and discover the city that has been preserved for 1500 years under 20ft of volcanic ash. City Wonders’ local expert guides will recreate the hustle and bustle of city, explaining what each building was used for, where families ate their meals, did laundry, socialized and more. Families will then visit the top of the infamous Mount Vesuvius, one of the few active volcanos in Europe. When back in Rome, families can also learn how to make authentic Italian pasta in a local home on City Wonders’ new family-friendly Authentic Pasta Making Experience. Both of these experiences can be found at www.citywonders.com.

Free 2019-2020 School Year Athletic Pre-Participation Screening Exams Offered for New Hanover County Middle and High School Athletes and Cheerleaders. Each year, all North Carolina students who plan to participate in athletics or cheerleading must undergo a state-mandated screening examination. Physicians in New Hanover-Pender County Medical Society, in concert with New Hanover County Health Department and the school systems, have, for many years, offered free screenings for New Hanover County athletes and cheerleaders at designated times. Exams for the Boys will be on Thursday, May 30, 2019. Girls’ exams will be on Thursday, June 06, 2019. Exams are at the Health Department, 2029 South 17th Street. The waiting area for students is the Health Department’s parking lot facing 17th street in front of the Health Department Clinic building. After lining up at the entrance, students will be seen on a first come, first served basis (begun in 2017), instead of by school groups. There is no need to arrive more than 15 minutes early. Before beginning an examination, physicians are required to see the two-page medical history, emergency information, and parental permission forms which are available in the schools and at the Board of Education or downloaded from the district’s website. Rising ninth graders should list the high school that they will attend in the fall. If there are questions, contact the student’s school, the Medical Society’s Executive Director, Bonnie Brown (910-790-5800; Email: MedicalSociety@NHPCMS.org), or the NHC Schools Lead Athletic Trainer, Matthew Triche (910-251-6100 x 74448 Email:matthew.triche@nhcs.net).
