For most people, purchasing a car is a long process that involves countless hours of research and price comparisons. Do you go with a new vehicle or do you purchase used? What model works best for your needs and family? The questions to consider are countless and buying a car can be somewhat overwhelming. Once you have made the decision on what type of vehicle you are looking for and the purchase has been made, a whole new set of concerns begins. How do I care for my new vehicle? How often should it be serviced? Who needs to handle the service needs of my vehicle? Worry no more. We have the answers to these questions and are here to help! When purchasing your vehicle, you will be offered the option to purchase an extended warranty to cover major repairs once the standard warranty has expired. Mark Wright with Lee Nissan in Wilson suggests always purchasing this option. “You want to make sure there are no high cost surprises once your factory warranty expires.” Having that extra protection gives you peace of mind knowing you are covered should you have to have any major work done. From the moment you drive off the lot, the value of your car begins to depreciate. How can you help re-

tain the value? Following the regular scheduled maintenance of your vehicle is key. Your owner’s manual will have a detailed list of what maintenance should be performed and when. Be sure to follow these recommendations closely to extend the life of your vehicle. While there are many options when it comes to maintaining your

nance done to your vehicle, there are things you can do to help maintain the value of your vehicle. Invest in all weather floor mats to help protect the interior of your car from dirt, rain, snow and more. Splash guards are also a great investment. They will help protect your car from rocks and debris that could bounce from the road and chip your paint.

green and you hit the gas and take off. Or, you are driving along and all of a sudden you have to hit the brakes for one reason or another. Accelerating or braking too quickly will cause your gas mileage to decrease considerably. Ease onto the gas when accelerating and brake at a slower pace to help alleviate this problem. Now, let’s go back to purchasing your vehicle. Did you purchase a used vehicle? If you’re like many shoppers, a used vehicle is sometimes a better option due to cost or even for design appeal. Quality used cars are hard to come by and properly maintaining your vehicle will earn you top dollar when it’s time to trade it in. Dealers are always in search of high quality used vehicles. “If you keep your car properly maintained and bring the service records with you when you come to trade, you are more likely to get a better price on your trade,” says Wright. “By properly maintaining your vehicle, you not only save money on unnecessary repairs throughout the time you drive it, but it also retains the value of your car when it comes time to get a new one.” Your vehicle is a costly investment and taking the time to care for it properly means you can enjoy it for many years to come.

If you keep your car properly maintained and bring the service records with you when you come to trade, you are more likely to get a better price. vehicle, it is always better to have it serviced at a dealership. “The service technicians at the dealership have been specially trained to care for your vehicle. They have been through classes that teach them the proper way to service your vehicle to help maintain the value by performing proper service,” says Wright. Having service performed at the dealership also allows the service technicians to assess your vehicle for any recalls you may not be aware of and make any necessary repairs to help keep you and your family safe. Besides having proper mainte-

Maintaining your vehicle properly can also help you hold on to some of your hard earned cash. Proper tire pressure can help cut down on excessive gas mileage. Again, your owner’s manual will have the specifications your particular vehicle requires for proper operation. Adding nitrogen to your tires is an easy way to make sure proper tire pressure is maintained. Ask your service technician about this option at your next service appointment. Another way to help cut back on excessive gas mileage is something we are all guilty of. The light turns

In this day and age, most parents of pre-school aged children pull double duty. Full time job during the day and full time parent at night. When you drop your child off in the morning, you want to leave them with the knowledge that you have put them in the safest place available and with the most caring people you can find. How do you know where that place is? To make sure you choose the child care center that is right for your child you must consider many factors when making your decision. Do they offer operating hours that work with your schedule? Many child care centers these days offer operating hours that work with any working parent’s schedule. From first shift to third shift, chances are you can find a child care center that is open when you need them to be. Second, are the teachers well educated and certified to teach preschool age children or infants? The State of North Carolina requires that directors and lead teachers of child care centers be over the age of 21 and have or be in the process of obtaining a North Carolina Early Childhood Credential certificate or its equivalent. Having an educated teacher in charge of your child can

help assure you that your child is being cared for by someone who has gone through classes and training that qualify her to be responsible for your child. The number of children in each classroom is also something to consider. There are guidelines in place that are set by the state for child to teacher ratios for each age group. Some child care centers take it

for because they will affect the overall health of your child while they are in the child care facility. Nutrition should also be a top priority. Are the meals and snacks provided healthy and nutritious? Many child care centers bring in nutrition experts to help them plan meals and snacks to ensure that the dietary needs of your child are being met. While your child may not

systems in place that allow you to view what is going on in your child’s classroom. These systems help give you peace of mind in knowing that you can easily find out what is going on with your child at any given point during their day. This is especially comforting when your child is transitioning into the center and may be having a hard time. You can see first hand what the staff is doing to comfort your child and make the transition easier for them. The bottom line when it comes to choosing child care for your child comes down to making sure you and your child are comfortable with the facility you have selected and that your child is well cared for and safe. You should feel comfortable with the director of the center and feel that you can call or stop in with any concerns you may have. If the center or the director do not have an open door policy, that should be an immediate red flag. When it comes to your child, you can never be too observant or cautious with their safety and well being. Trust your instincts and go with your gut and you and your child will both be fine!

The bottom line when it comes to choosing child care for your child comes down to making sure you and your child are comfortable with the facility you have selected . upon themselves to reduce these numbers even more. A smaller classroom size means your child will have more personal interaction with the classroom teacher. High on your list of priorities when choosing child care should be the cleanliness of the facility. Does it appear well kept and clutter free? Are the trash cans overflowing? Are the toys clean and disinfected? These are important things to look

eat everything that is put in front of him, you should feel comfortable knowing he has a wide selection of healthy and nutritious foods to choose from. Something else to ask the prospective center you are looking at is what they do to ensure the safety of your child. Do they have appropriate safety protocols in place? As a parent, one of the most important decisions you must make for your child is what type of education you want to provide for them. Building a strong foundation for them to start with can sometimes make a difference in how successful they are later in life. For some parents, providing an education at a private school is the only option they consider. This may be because it mirrors their own education, or it could be simply because they feel the education their child will receive at a private school will better prepare them for what lies ahead. If you are contemplating sending your child to a private school, there are many things you should consider before you select a school. All private schools are not created equal and many are ahead of the class when it comes to what they offer. The school you choose should be accredited by the Southern Association of Schools and Colleges (SACS) and AdvancEd. This organization sets strict policies and guidelines that must be followed in order for a school to be accredited by the organization. While both public and private schools can be accredited by this organization, the requirements put in place for private schools are more advanced than those of public schools. In Wilson, Greenfield School is the only private school that is accredited by SACS. Before you make a decision, you

should plan to visit and observe several different schools. The structure of each school will be different and it is important to understand how each one works so you can best determine the right place for your child. Private schools offer several different experiences that are not available from the public school system. Because private schools are considerably smaller in enrollment than public schools, the class sizes at a private school will be much smaller.

of public high school graduates that go on to attend college averages about 81% nationally. Private schools boast much higher numbers. For example, Greenfield School has a reputation for having 100% of their graduates go on to attend college. As you visit each school, you should ask for information that shows the colleges that their graduates have been accepted to as well as the average SAT and ACT scores earned by their students. Histori-

should also play a part in your decision. Do you feel comfortable interacting with your child’s school? Are there lines of open communication between you and the staff and administration? “A private school should welcome parental involvement and as parents, you should want to know what is going on with your child’s school” says Robin Hauser with Greenfield School. “At Greenfield, we are one big family and the staff knows everyone. You should expect that type of interaction when choosing a private school for your child.” While private school may be the best option for you as a parent, be sure to consider the abilities of your child and their opinion as well. “Students that have a strong educational foundation will do well in a private school. However, if they are struggling academically in their current school, they may not be able to handle the challenging academics that will be offered at a private school. Starting them early in a private school will ensure they get that strong educational foundation they need to go on to college and succeed later in life” says Hauser. The importance of a strong education is one of the best things you can do to prepare your child for the future. Finding the right private school to fit your needs can help.

A private school should welcome parental involvement and as parents, you should want to know what is going on with your child’s school. This will allow your child to better interact with their instructor and also allows for more individual attention. The quality of the education your child will receive at a private school will also be more advanced than what a public school has the ability to provide. The standards for private schools are set high to ensure that your child receives the quality education you expect. According to the National Center for Education Statistics, the rate

cally, students at private schools perform better on standardized tests and have scores that are higher than those of students in public schools. You will also want to discuss what type of extracurricular activities are available for your child to participate in and about the sports programs that are available. Many private schools offer sports programs that are “nocut” teams so all students that wish to participate have the opportunity. The atmosphere of the school

y l r a e r e c n a c t s a e r b t c e t e D This year, there will be approximately 230,000 new breast cancer cases diagnosed across the country. Diagnosing these cases as soon as possible is extremely important to increase the likelihood they can be successfully treated. When breast cancer is found in its earliest form (stages 0 and 1), the cure rate is nearly 100%. The higher stages correlate with larger tumors and survival can be much lower. When breast cancer is found by feeling a lump, it tends to be larger and more advanced. When breast cancer is found by mammography, the majority are stage 0 or stage 1 (which are very treatable). There are 3 ways in which breast cancer may be discovered. Some organizations have different recommendations but the American Cancer Society recommends using one or more of the following: Self exams: Performing regular self breast exams can be your first line of defense. All women should get to know their breast patterns and report any unusual changes to their health care provider. Having regular physical examinations by a health care provider: Women in their 20s and 30s should have a clinical breast exam (CBE) as part of their regular health exam by a health professional (preferably every 3 years). Starting at age 40, women should have

a CBE by a health professional every year. Mammography: Women age 40 and older should have a mammogram every year and should continue to do so for as long as they are in good health. Women at higher risk may consider additional testing or starting before age 40. It is important to note that there are two different forms of mammography: screening and diagnostic. Screening mammograms

exams are handled differently by different plans. It should always be “covered but there may be a copay or deductible applied. In order to make the right decision on the best mammography facility for you, there are several key factors you should consider. The facility, technology, and personnel are among the most important. All mammography facilities must be certified by the FDA. You can find a facility on the FDA web-

curate. 3D Digital mammography (also known as tomosynthesis) is the newest tool and has been shown to be even more effective than 2D digital. 3D has been shown to lower the number of false alarms and increase the detection of early breast cancer. Mammograms can be interpreted by radiologists with varying levels of training and experience. Research has shown that the most experienced radiologists specializing in breast imaging have the lowest false alarm rates while finding the smallest cancers. You should look for a facility where all of the mammography exams are interpreted by an experienced fellowship trained breast imaging expert. The experience of the technologists who perform the mammogram is also important, so you should look for a facility that specializes in mammography where the staff is 100% dedicated to breast imaging. To learn more about breast cancer and early detection, you can speak with your heath care provider at your next visit or you can visit The American Cancer Society website at www.cancer.org for helpful information. Other organizations like the Susan B. Komen Foundation (www.komen.org) also have information available.

Generalized breast pain, breast implants, history of benign breast biopsy or breast cancer more than 5 years ago can all be done as screening exams. Any other situation requires diagnostic mammography. Screening is covered as a preventative test by Medicare and almost all other insurance companies. All insurance plans now must cover screening without any copay or deductible. Diagnostic

site. Some facilities have additional certifications such as the American College of Radiology Breast Imaging Center of Excellence designation which requires voluntary certification in mammography, breast ultrasound and breast biopsy. At this point in time there are 3 types of mammography technology: Analog (film), Digital (2D), and 3D Digital. Almost all analog systems in the USA have been replaced by digital since it has been established that digital is more ac-

Gone are the days of weeks-long recovery and hiding out while your wounds heal. Being placed under general anesthesia can be scary and sometimes dangerous. Luckily, it isn’t required for every procedure and now many cosmetic procedures can be done in the comfort of your doctors office with little to no downtime or pain. Many cosmetic procedures such as Botox and dermal fillers are less invasive options to plastic surgery yet still provide noticeable differences in skin appearance. One of the new and exciting procedures that is available is skin needling. It can be known by many different names such as collagen induction therapy, percutaneous collagen induction or the most widely recognized name of micro needling. This procedure involves using a device that contains several small fine needles housed in a hand held device. The needles are used to puncture small areas of the skin, which creates small channels under the skin. Creating these microscopic channels triggers the natural healing properties in your body to produce more skin firming collagen and elastin to fill the channels.

Micro needling can be used to treat many skin conditions such as fine lines and wrinkles, acne scarring, surgical scarring, burns, and stretch marks. The micro needling procedure helps your skin become more firm and allows it to regain elasticity that has been lost. You can

Cosmetic procedures are becoming more widely available and choosing the right fit for you can be overwhelming. Before considering any cosmetic procedure, you will want to consult with a physician to find out what options are available to you and which procedure will best fit the overall goal you wish to achieve. Look for a physician who is board certified and specializes in the types of procedures you are considering. Schedule a consultation and meet with the physician and his or her staff to be sure you are comfortable with and well informed about the options that are available to you. Let your physician know exactly what you expect to see as a result of the procedure. Cosmetic procedures are not meant to completely eliminate all skin concerns and it is important to understand exactly what results you can expect. Be sure to ask questions if you are unclear and take notes to refer back to later before you make a final decision.

d e w a e s o Cho You’re getting married! Congratulations! Now, the real fun begins as you plan every aspect of your wedding, right down to the very last detail. One of the most important parts of your wedding will be the wedding cake. It will be on display for all your guests to see and will be the star of many of your wedding photos. So, how do you decide which cake is the right cake for you? Choosing a wedding cake should be one of the most fun parts of your wedding planning. You get to eat cake, and lots of it! You should order your wedding cake at least 3 to 6 months prior to the date of your wedding to ensure you can get the date you want. Certain times of the year fill up fast. Before you make a decision on which bakery or cake shop should create your dream design, you must first decide what size cake you will need. To determine this, you will need to know the approximate number of guests you plan to have at your wedding. Knowing this will allow your baker to give you a more accurate price and design. Pricing for wedding cakes is dependent on the market you are in and typically ranges anywhere from $3.50 per serving up to $6.50 per serving. For weddings, a serving is typically a 1” x 2” slice. To serve a guest list of 150 people, you can expect your cake

to cost somewhere between $525 and $975. Now that you know what you can expect cost wise, it’s time to decide who will make your cake for you. Ask for recommendations from friends and family, especially ones that have recently gotten married. The baker you select should be able to give you a sketch of what you can expect your finished cake to look like and what the total cost will be, including any rental

icing you should select. You want to be sure the icing on your cake will stand up to the elements. What might work well for a beach wedding may not work so well for a wedding held in a much colder climate. Your baker can guide you in what choices are available to you. If you plan to have flowers on your cake, do you want them to be fresh flowers, silk flowers, or edible sugar flowers? Again, your baker can be a

wedding cake, Dindy Perry, owner of Cupcake Dream, has these tips. “Before you prepare your cake for the freezer, you will want to refrigerate it to allow the buttercream icing to harden.” Freezing the top tier is not an option if your cake is decorated with fondant. “Once the buttercream has hardened, you should wrap the cake tightly with a couple layers of plastic wrap, making sure it is air tight. After that, it should be wrapped with several layers of aluminum foil,” she says. Now it’s ready for the freezer and will be just as beautiful as it was on your wedding day when you take it out of the freezer on your first anniversary. Your bakery may also be able to help you design custom favors for your wedding guests. Many bakeries can do cake pops, cookies or even cupcakes to be handed out to your guests. Discuss these options with your baker if you wish to explore this option. Another popular cake for weddings is the groom’s cake that is served at the rehearsal dinner. You can custom design it to match the personality of your groom or have it created to replicate one of his favorite hobbies! Choosing your wedding cake is a big step in planning your wedding. Choosing just the right one will make your big day even more special for you and your groom.

The bakery should have multiple flavors of cake and icing available for you to try. They will offer suggestions on flavors that pair well together and can guide you with making a decision. Selecting the design of your cake has many components. Do you prefer fondant or would you rather have buttercream? The location of your wedding can play a part in which type of

This option is becoming more and more popular and offers you the ability to have more flavor combinations than ever before. Unfortunately, almost everyone will be faced with cancer at some point in their lives. Whether it affects you directly, or whether it affects a close family member, cancer is all around us. When someone receives a cancer diagnosis, it can be devastating and overwhelming. Knowing what to do next can help assure you that someone is on your side and ready to help you. When choosing a practice to help fight your battle, it is important to make the right choice. Your doctor can help direct you to oncology practices that will be able to treat your specific form of cancer. Fortunately, most oncologists are trained to treat most types of cancer. Your doctor may offer you suggestions of several practices so it is important to research those practices and choose the one that will best suit your needs. There are many factors that can play into this decision. For many people, location is important. Having a practice that is close to home can help alleviate the hassle of transportation to and from appointments. Since many patients will require assistance to attend their

appointments, it is much easier for caregivers to help when the practice is close by. Ask the practices you are considering what types of support groups are available and how often they meet. Many practices will also offer in house pharmacies that their patients can utilize. They are usually price competitive with outside pharmacies and allow you the ability to save time by filling your medications and see your doctor all in one place. d n a d n a t s r e d r n e e U b e t a i c appre For most people, if you ask them about beer, their mind immediately takes them back to college frat parties with endless kegs of cheap beer. Fortunately, like most of us, beer has evolved over the years. Now, there are more upscale versions of beer than ever before. Craft beer is slowly making a comeback, after being almost completely eliminated during prohibition. “We are finally seeing small breweries bounce back to pre-prohibition numbers” says Kevin Gross, Certified Beer Server and owner of The Beer Store in downtown Wilson. Brewers who create craft beer consider themselves to be artists of their trade. Making small batches of beer allows them to mix and create flavors and combinations that have otherwise not been available. To appreciate beer, you must first understand beer. There are many elements that go into creating beer. The process starts with a brewer selecting just the right ingredients to create the flavor and characteristics they are after. Water, barley, and hops are the main ingredients required to make beer, but the combination and style of each ingredient can significantly change the end product. Specialty beers may also have additional ingredients that will lend to the overall flavor or style the brewer seeks. These ingredients could include fruits, chocolate, coffee, honey, and more.

In addition, the process used to brew the beer can affect the outcome of the product. Slight variations in temperature, the time the process takes, and the technique used to complete the process can all affect how the beer turns out. Beer can come in many styles, colors and strengths. Most craft beers are divided into two categories: ales and lagers. These two broad categories can then be broken

tastings where brewery reps bring their beers for you to sample. Of course, talking to a beer expert is a good way to learn about beer. Fortunately for consumers there is a certification program that helps identify beer experts. The Cicerone Certification Program is a three tiered program (Certificated Beer Server, Cicerone, Master Cicerone) much like the sommelier certification used by the wine

Appreciating beer goes further than the taste... You should also consider the color, aroma, and of course the appearance and presentation. down into smaller sub-categories that cover a wide variety of beers. When learning about the different styles of beers, you can rely on several different sources. Gross suggests talking to people that are knowledgeable about the beers they serve and sell as well as attending festivals that are dedicated to craft beer. “Festivals are a good learning tool because they put you in one place with a lot of people that are passionate and knowledgeable about the industry. It gives you the opportunity to sample a variety of different beers,” he says. Often your local beer store will have free

industry. Certified Beer Servers understand proper storage and serving so the beer they serve will taste the way it should. Too often great beer is harmed by improper handling and service practices. Once you have a better understanding about how beer is made and the different styles of beer available, you can delve a little deeper into the details of beer such as the type of glass that each beer should be served in, how to pour the beer correctly, and how to appreciate the beer. As anyone passionate about beer can tell you, presentation is everything. Certain styles of beer should be presented at

certain temperatures, in a certain glass, and with a certain amount of head, or foam, on top. Beers that are lighter in color should be served at the coldest temperature, while darker beers can stand to be served a little warmer. Some styles of beer are best presented with a small amount of head, while others should be served with a considerable amount of head. Doing your research and talking to knowledgeable people can help you understand which beers should be presented which way. And yes, the glass does matter. Each style of glass offers certain characteristics that will allow the beer to be enjoyed the way it was intended when it was brewed. Appreciating beer goes further than the taste, though. You should also consider the color, aroma, and of course the appearance and presentation. Your appreciation for beer will grow as you continue to experience new styles. One of the most common misconceptions about craft beer is that it is pricey. Not true, says Gross. “Craft beer doesn’t have to be expensive. There are many quality beers out there that are that are relatively inexpensive.” Bottom line: Visit your local beer store, talk to someone who is knowledgeable, and taste a few beers to determine what styles most appeal to you. You may not care for all of them, but chances are you’ll find a few that you like!

y h t l a e h f l e s r u o y Keep For the most part, health care professionals have tried for years to give us the necessary tools needed to keep ourselves healthy. While some have listened to the advice that’s been given and have made great strides in trying to get and stay healthy, there are so many others who have not. The holidays pose a particularly challenging time because of hectic schedules and food at every turn. When January rolls around, everyone vows to “do better,” and for a while, it works. Then hectic schedules start again, and that desire to “do better” is forgotten. With rising health care costs, getting and staying healthy is more important now than ever before. One of the most important parts of keeping healthy is to make sure you get enough sleep. A lack of sleep contributes to a number of health problems, including heart disease, diabetes, stroke and depression. Typically, an adult needs between 7 and 9 hours of sleep, Children and teenagers may need more -- as much as 12 hours for some school-aged children. Sleep is the body’s way of resting from the previous day and refueling for the following day. Getting enough sleep makes your brain sharper.

You should also make sure to eat breakfast. And not the drivethru kind. We’re in a hurry up world today, but we need to take the time for a good breakfast. Jeanne Finney-Dao, outpatient dietitian at Wilson Medical Center, has two quick and healthy

Another option is a whole wheat English muffin with 1-2 tablespoons of peanut butter and half a banana cut up on the pea-

on the muffin and eat it as an egg sandwich. Breakfast is very important for our bodies. It provides the necessary fuel needed to get your day started. Eating a healthy and satisfying breakfast can set the tone for the rest of the day. Setting a good example for your family is also key in helping to keep everyone healthy. Engage in healthy activities as a

family. Go on a picnic or share an exercise routine with your children. Play soccer with them, run, or even swim. Do something you enjoy doing with your children. Children tend to mimic the behavior, attitudes about food, and activity levels from their parents. Model healthy behavior by choosing healthy snacks and being active. Choose fruits and vegetables instead of sweets and chips. Choose water, not soft drinks. Your children will notice. Encourage your children to put down their cell phones and get up from their video games and favorite TV shows and read or ride their bikes and engage with other people. Riding bikes with friends and siblings is a great way to exercise and have oneon-one conversations with other people. Before your child gets on a bike, please make sure he has an appropriately sized bike helmet that fits snuggly. Always put safety first! Making healthy choices is a day-to-day battle. It won’t always be easy, but it will always be worth it.

Most would agree that an employer has the duty to provide and maintain a safe, secure, and productive environment for its employees. With that said, employers have the right to expect their employees to perform tasks in a safe and efficient manner. Why might you need a drug free workplace? Your workplace may be required to establish a substance abuse testing program because of the Federal Department of Transportation Regulations, or your workers compensation carrier may require it. Quite often the answer will be because of a noticeable decrease in productivity or a marked increase in accidents within the workplace. Oftentimes, these incidents can be contributed to having a person or persons on staff that are misusing prescription drugs or abusing illegal drugs and /or alcohol. Some habits that are common among drug users and can easily be transferred into a work environment are: •Drug users are 16 times more likely to be absent from work. •Drug users have three times the number of accidents and are more likely to injure themselves or someone else. • Drug users are twice as likely to leave work early. •Drug users are three times more likely to be late for work. •Drug users are five times more likely to file for workers compensation. •Drug users are three time more likely to call in sick. • Drug users claim three times the

amount of health care benefits. • Drug users are also 100 times more likely to steal from your company than employees who abstain from using drugs. The problem is that it is sometimes very difficult to determine which employees are abusing drugs. In your goal to create a safe drug free workplace, start with understanding the ins and outs of creating and maintaining that drug free environment, by establishing a legally sound substance abuse testing program. Your substance abuse program and your procedures will need to be maintained and updated based on changing laws

program is the need to first establish a clear, comprehensive, legally defensible written policy and communicate it to all employees. The supervisors who work for you will need to be educated and trained on the program and how to recognize substance abuse in the workplace, so they can properly help implement it. Employees will also need to be educated on the requirements that go along with the program. They should be informed that testing procedures have been established based on the the safety needs of the company. Keep in mind that some workers

put into the program by reducing or eliminating your need to pay out unemployment benefits to a confirmed drug abuser. Companies who have a drug free workplace will find that an investment in education, prevention, and assistance programs pay dividends for both employer and employee. Employees are more productive and have better morale when their health and safety is protected from increased dangers and risks that substance abusers present in the workplace. Workers will appreciate your concern for their health, safety, and well-being. If your goal is to create a safe, drug free workplace for your company, there are companies that can help. Melanie Womble, RN, CPCT owner, president and CEO of Professional Drug Screening Services, Inc. wants to stress that you look for a company with experience. “Experience matters,” she says. “You also want to make sure they are certified and accredited and that the company has received and maintains the program management accreditation of Nationally Accredited for Administration of Drug and Alcohol Testing Programs (NAADATP). Insist on collection procedure guidelines establish by the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) be strictly followed and insist on lab based testing that is only carried out through laboratories that are certified by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services nistration(SAMHSA)”.

The laws governing drug and alcohol screening for the workplace, both state and federal, can be cumbersome and confusing. Understanding the advantages of using qualified, certified and experienced professionals and laboratories to assist you is essential to the success of your program. Paramount to establishing your workplace substance abuse testing

compensation carriers require a business to have a drug free workplace program in place. Many of these carriers will offer reduced rates if your program meets their specific criteria. If the program is followed and administrated properly with incidents reported as required, and all legal statues are followed correctly (especially those relating to the Employment Security Commission), you can expect a return on the investment you have

e h t e v a h u o y e r su e k e g a a r M e v o c e c n a r u s n i t righ Certain holidays and events, such as Christmas, represent a special time for gift giving—and there are some gifts that sparkle more than others. In many cases, while it’s always the thought that counts, when it comes to more expensive thoughts, there are other things to consider as well – such as insurance. Although it’s hard to put a price on sentimental items, valuables such as diamond rings need to be properly insured against loss or theft. Each year, according to the U.S. Department of Justice, consumers spend $50 billion on jewelry, of which $1 billion is lost, stolen, or otherwise disappears. Perhaps surprisingly, your existing insurance probably doesn’t provide enough coverage for higher valued items. In fact, the vast majority of these items are underinsured, which means they can’t be adequately replaced. “Many homeowner’s or renter’s insurance policies provide only a basic level of personal property coverage - often in the $1,000 to $1,500 range - for items such as jewelry and furs,” said Brett Parker, Property and Casualty Specialist with MetLife Auto

& Home. “That’s why people with high-valued items need to make sure those valuables are appropriately protected.” For a greater level of coverage, insurance companies offer Scheduled Personal Property (SPP), an endorsement that provides 100 percent of the “stated value” of valuable items for a

Most companies stipulate that reimbursement for a loss will not exceed the actual cash value of the item, or the cost to replace the item, as outlined in the policy. Some, however, offer extra peace of mind, by providing coverage on an “agreed value” basis.

• Have items appraised. Locate a professional appraiser and get a detailed description and value of the item - in writing. “Refresh” appraisals every two or three years. Markets, such as those for diamond and silver, tend to fluctuate. Have items reappraised, especially those with individ-

• Store the appraisal in a safe place with other valuable papers. Even if the value increases over time, it’s helpful to have the description in writing.

Finally, consider taking an inventory of your valuables. “Having an inventory on-hand can be valuable in the event of a theft,” said Parker. “Without one, it’s hard to remember everything that’s missing until days or weeks later, at which point, the trail is colder. Inventories help ensure valuables make it back where they belong.” To help protect your assets, contact a property and casualty specialist to discuss what options you should consider. Many agents offer free consultations and can give you information that will help you choose the right coverage for you.

o t h g i r e h t e c Pick i t c pra When choosing the right orthopaedic practice for you, there are many factors that you should consider. First and foremost, you will want to select a practice that has a knowledgeable and experienced staff. The physicians should all be board certified and have a great reputation within the community as well as a history of quality patient care. Recommendations from other physicians or from friends can be helpful in deciding where to start your search. You should also consider a practice that offers a wide range of specialties. Some of these specialties may include pain management, sports medicine, general orthopaedics, neurology, joint replacement and reconstruction, as well as many others. Having access to a team of physicians that can offer expertise in many different areas can help ensure that you receive the most accurate diagnosis and treatment plan. The types of treatment techniques used can also be important to your search. Offices that provide the most innovative technology and successful techniques could save you time and money on costly and painful procedures. Knowing what type of treatment or diagnostic options are available ahead of time can be helpful if you

have certain medical conditions that may pose an issue for certain types of tests. For example, if you must have an MRI done to make a diagnosis and you are claustrophobic, knowing the practice you have selected has an open MRI machine may make your experience easier to tolerate. Currently, the region’s only open MRI

this service during your treatment. To ensure you make the right decision for you, schedule a consultation with several different offices so you can rate the overall experience you have with each. Was the check-in procedure smooth and seamless? Do you feel your concerns were properly addressed during your visit? Was the staff friendly and knowledgeable and

These portals also allow you to review and pay any statements you may have, request appointments, complete and update medical form and even research health topics. You can also ask questions or request prescription refills through these portals. This can be especially convenient if it is after hours and you have a concern you wish to have addressed. To better treat patients in need of orthopaedic care, many practices also offer after hours care. At Wilson Ortho for example, they offer an after-hours orthopaedic urgent care. This offers orthopaedic care for those needing an x-ray, casting or even just an exam with no additional urgent care copay or emergency room fees. This can be especially helpful for patients with non-traumatic injuries that don’t necessarily warrant an emergency room visit. Selecting the right orthopaedic practice to meet your needs is an important part of making sure you receive the care and attention you deserve. Choose the one that offers the elements that are most important to you and you’ll feel confident in knowing you made the right decision.

s s e n t fi t h g i r e h t e s o o u o h y C r o f r e cent When it comes to working out, there are many types of people. Some are the die-hard go-getters who are in the gym morning, noon, and night, while others join at the beginning of the new year and are just beginning their journey to better health. Regardless of which category you fit into, there are many fitness centers that are available for you to utilize. When deciding which fitness center is best for you, you first need to figure out what your overall goal is. Are you looking for a fitness routine that will help you lose a few pounds and build some muscle or are you just looking to maintain your weight while improving your overall health? If you are looking to create a workout routine that will help you shed those extra pounds, a fitness center that has a personal trainer and a nutritionist may be the right choice. You can partner with them to build the right balance of training and nutrition to help you achieve your overall goal. Likewise, if you prefer a fitness center that is geared towards one specific gender, this will help you narrow down your search. There are also specialized fitness centers available that focus solely on specific forms of training. Are you only interested in working out as part of a group? If so, a fitness center that offers group classes is defi-

nitely the option for you. Once you have determined the reason behind your desire to search for a fitness center, you can then begin doing research to see what your options are. When you begin your search, the most important thing to remember is not to make your decision based on price. Neil Strother with Victory Fitness in Wilson stresses that you need

available? What is the condition of the equipment? Equipment that is poorly maintained speaks volumes about the overall experience you can expect in a fitness center. Also take a look at the cleanliness of the fitness center. Are there sanitizing stations placed throughout the equipment? Do you see plenty of hand sanitizer throughout the building?

you have selected, the more likely you are to continue to go. Choosing a fitness center that is out of the way or across town from work or home probably isn’t a wise decision. “It’s easy to make excuses not to go when it isn’t right in front of you, but if you have to pass it to get to work or to get home, it’s a lot easier to work it into your daily routine,” says Strother. Another question to ask when you visit a fitness center would be what you can expect at the times you plan to visit. Are you going to be working out at peak hours like right before or right after work? Unless you have chosen a fitness center that has very few members, you shouldn’t expect that the fitness center won’t be busy at peak times. “Be prepared to wait or for it to be very busy if you plan to work out at the same time everyone else is trying to get in,” Strother stresses. Ask the fitness center if they offer a trial period. Some centers will offer a day pass that will allow you to test out the center to see if it is the right fit for you. Regardless of the reason you have chosen to select a fitness center, making the right decision can put you on the path to achieving your fitness goals. Do your research and make sure the fitness center you select meets all your needs and you will soon be on your way to a better, healthier you.

When deciding which fitness center is best for you, you first need to figure out what your overall goal is. to take the time to visit the fitness centers you are considering. “We have people contact us quite often just to ask about the price of our membership. Price should not be the deciding factor for the fitness center you select, and you shouldn’t select a fitness center over the phone. You need to get out and actually visit each of the centers you are considering. Cheaper isn’t always better and neither is the most expensive.” When visiting the fitness centers you are considering, be sure to take a look around and see what is available. Is there a variety of equipment

How about the restrooms and changing areas? Are they clean and free from trash and grime? The number one reason people stop going to a fitness center is because of cleanliness. Either the equipment isn’t clean or the facility itself is dirty. On the flip side of that, the number one reason people continue to go to a particular fitness center is because it is clean and well maintained. While price is a factor that should not play into your decision, location is definitely something you want to consider when selecting a fitness center. The closer you are to the fitness center

Buying a home can be one of the most stressful times in your life. It doesn’t have to be. Before you even begin looking for a new home, there are a few things to consider. All too often, homebuyers will begin looking at new homes before they have done any research or prior planning. This can become an issue if they fall in love with a home that is out of their price range or is located in a different area of town than they really intended to be. Allyson Moye, a broker with Womble Real Estate, suggests that before you begin looking you should first visit your bank or a mortgage lender and see what amount you can be pre-qualified for. “The amount you are pre-qualified for does not necessarily mean you have to purchase a home in that price range, but it does allow you to gauge what types of homes and the maximum price you should consider. You don’t want to purchase a home that will exceed the amount you can truly afford,” she says. In addition, you should also make a budget that outlines what your daily, weekly and monthly expenses are, as these are not factored into the equation that determines what your lender thinks you can afford. You should be comfortable with your anticipated monthly mortgage plus the total budget required to meet your current expenses. Once you are armed with the bud-

get you feel comfortable with, you can begin thinking about your search and can narrow down a few possibilities. First, what is your ideal location? Is it close to work? Out in the country? Do the school districts matter? Do you want to be in a neighborhood that offers certain amenities? These are all things you will want to think about before you step foot into a home to view it. You may also want to consider having an agent to work with.

your own agent can help you take the guesswork out of purchasing a home. The agent you select should be someone you feel comfortable working with and sharing information with. “An agent is obligated to share certain information with their client. You want to make sure you can communicate effectively with the agent you choose,” says Moye. If the agent is overbearing and ready to make an offer or have you sign a contract before you are ready, he is probably not the agent for you. Ask

you any way he can. When selecting a new home, you will want to take a look at any and all homes that are available in your budget and that fall within the guidelines you have set for your search. Many people make the mistake of buying the first home they view only to later discover that another listing that was also available better fit their needs. Take your time and make sure the home you select is one you can see yourself living in for several years. If you’re selling your home, an agent can also be of great help to you. Agents can instruct you on what you should do to maximize exposure and foot traffic through your home to increase the likelihood of selling it. An agent for the seller would also do research to see what other comparable homes in the area are being sold for and will help you determine what your listing price should be. Again, if the agent has unrealistic expectations on the price you should ask for your home or if they seem too flaky and uninterested, they may not be the agent for you. Regardless of whether you are buying a new home or selling your current home, you should make sure you have all the information and knowledge you need to make the right decisions. Whether it’s deciding what to list your home for or what to offer on a potential home, making educated decisions will only benefit you in the long run.

If you’re selling your home, an agent can also be of great help to you. Agents can instruct you on what you should do to maximize exposure and foot traffic through your home to increase the likelihood of selling it. “Working with a real estate agent does not cost the buyer anything, as the agent is paid out of the funds the seller would receive at closing,” Moye adds. Working with an agent offers many advantages. Agents can guide you in answering the questions you may have on what location you wish to be in. They can research properties for you and find out what comparable homes in the area have sold for. They can negotiate on your behalf with the seller’s agent. Having

for references from friends or family that have recently purchased homes. You will want an agent who has your best interests in mind, not the dollar amount they want in their pocket. Your agent will be a great resource in finding the perfect home for you and can answer many questions you may not even know to ask. They can assist you with setting up inspections, appraisals, and more. Don’t be afraid to ask questions or for advice. Your agent is here to help
