Business

Scott Dunn For as long as he can remember, Scott Dunn has been in the grocery business. “My grandfather started out in the grocery business back in 1938. He had a grocery store in Pinetops called Dunn’s Grocery.” Dunn’s grandfather operated that store with his son Marshall, until Marshall decided he was ready for something bigger. “In 1965, my dad bought into the Piggly Wiggly company and opened a franchise store in Pinetops,” says Dunn. From the time he was old enough to help in the store, Dunn was involved in the family business. “I guess you could say I was born into it,” he says. “Being here has taught me about customer service and how important it is to be committed to your customers. Keeping them happy is what keeps them coming back.” It wasn’t long before the family business expanded again. “We went from having the one original store to having nine more.” The Dunn family owns and operates the original Piggly Wiggly store in Pinetops as well as stores in Ahoskie, Farmville, Grifton, two stores in Rocky Mount, and two stores in Wilson. Piggly Wiggly has been a part of the Wilson community since the late 1980’s. “We truly love being in Wilson, and Wilson has been good to us,” says Dunn. Piggly Wiggly is proud to contribute to the Wilson community and goes above and beyond to support local community organizations. “We want to give back to the community to show them that we truly appreciate their business and make sure they know that we want them to keep coming to see us.” The Wilson stores are located at 1105 Ward Blvd. and 309 Nash St. NW. “Unlike a corporate owned supermarket, we are a locally owned, independent store that An advertising supplement to The Wilson Times

truly takes care of our people, from our employees to our customers. We like to provide a family atmosphere in our stores and we give 100 percent attention to our customers,” says Dunn. “Our mission is to continue to give the good old fashioned customer service that people have come to expect from us.” All of the Piggly Wiggly stores operated by the Dunn family offer grocery carry out service, excellent customer service, expanded grocery choices and fresh, high quality meats. “All of our meats are cut fresh daily, right in our stores. You won’t get the same quality meats that we offer at the corporate owned supermarkets.” Dunn grew up in the Pinetops area and graduated from Rocky Mount Academy. He then went on to attend the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he graduated from in 1991. After that, it was right back to his roots and working in the family business. “I love what I’m doing, and I anticipate our business growing even more in the coming years. You never know when a good opportunity is going to come your way.” When he isn’t busy working in the family business, Dunn enjoys working out and exercising, spending time with his wife, Rhonda, and his three children: Shelby, 18, Rachel Scott, 15, and Marshall, 10. He is also the varsity boy’s basketball coach at Rocky Mount Academy and helps coach his son’s travel basketball team. “I also like to go out to the farm and ride horses or just chill out and have some down time.” March 2015

Phillip Jordan Since 1988, Phillip Jordan has been a part of the pawn shop scene in Wilson. He started out as the manager of Pioneer Pawn Shop, which opened in 1982 and was located on Tarboro St. When the store moved to Nash Street in 1990 and changed its name to The Pioneer Jewelry, Music and Pawn, he moved with it. He also tagged along when the store moved yet again in 1998, this time to the current location in the Wilson Square shopping center on Ward Boulevard. “I managed the store for a company out of Goldsboro from 1988 until I got an opportunity to buy it in 2006,” says Jordan. There have been few changes in the way things are done since Jordan took over ownership. He does have one special “employee” though. When you stop into the store, you’re likely to be greeted by Melvin, the resident chocolate lab. “He comes to work with me just about every day. He likes to meet our customers and we have customers that come in just to see him!” In 2006, Jordan decided to expand his business portfolio and delved into the music store business. “We opened our first Redphish Music store in Rocky Mount in November of 2006. In the fall of 2007, we opened two more stores, one in Smithfield and the store here in Wilson.” In the last eight years, he has also opened Redphish Music stores in Goldsboro, Greenville, and Garner. Redphish Music got its name from a combination of the nicknames he has for his two daughters, Emily and Rachel. “Emily has red hair, so that’s where the red came from, and Rachel used to eat fish sticks and nothing else, so we started calling her fish stick. Over the years, it got shortened to just fish. She decided to spell it phish because she wanted to copy the first part of my name. We combined the two and Redphish was born.” An advertising supplement to The Wilson Times

In August 2013, Redphish Music and The Pioneer Jewelry, Music and Pawn stores combined into one location. As technology has evolved, the space required for the inventory needed in each store has decreased. “Equipment is smaller, electronics are smaller, everything is smaller. We had the space so it made sense to put everything under one roof. Having everything consolidate into one place was an extremely positive move for us. It has cut down on our overhead to the point that we can now carry more inventory in our music store,” says Jordan. The Walmart Neighborhood Market store that is planned for the Wilson Square shopping center is seen as a positive addition to the area according to Jordan. “I think it’s a great thing. It will increase traffic to this shopping center and will hopefully increase business for not only us, but for our neighbors too.” Jordan’s daughter Emily is now 24 and is a teacher in Wayne County. She is also a softball coach and Jordan enjoys going to her games when he has time. Rachel is 20 and is a sophomore at Barton College, where she plays softball. “I travel around as much as I can to watch her play ball. I love to watch my girls in action,” says Jordan. Jordan also enjoys spending time with his wife of 30 years, Melissa. He is also a brand new grandpa to his first granddaughter, Rayleigh Anne, the daughter of his oldest child, Emily. He is an active member of Stoney Creek Free Will Baptist Church in Goldsboro and is also an avid sports fan. March 2015

North Nash Plaza tenants find new homes

The recent announcement that the Walmart Corporation plans to build a Walmart Neighborhood Market store in the current location of Norh Nash Plaza, at the corner of Ward Boulevard and Nash Streets, has left many business owners scrambling to find new locations for their businesses. Existing buildings in the shopping centers are slated to be demolished, and a new parking and landscaping will be added. A new 41,117 square-foot grocery store and a separate gas station will then be built. A second store is also planned for the Wilson Square Shopping Center, at 925 Ward Boulevard. Certain locations within that shopping center will also be demolished and a new 41,000-square-foot, 24-hour Walmart Neighborhood Market grocery store, pharmacy and gas station will be built. 8

March 2015

Walmart Neighborhood Market stores are grocery stores with a pharmacy, pharmacy drive-through and some household items. The stores are stocked with fresh produce, a full line of groceries from leading brand names and organic selections. There will also be a variety of meat and bakery selections, including fresh-baked breads and tortillas. Other items will include health and beauty items, cleaning supplies and pet products. “We are excited to bring our Neighborhood Market store to Wilson and provide our customers the benefits of a Walmart closer to where they live and work,” said Amanda Henneberg, Walmart spokesperson. “Grocery is an area that customers have come to expect from Walmart because they know we can offer a broad assortment of fresh food at a low price.”

Though there aren’t many businesses left in the North Nash Plaza shopping center, those that are still open and operating will soon have to relocate or close their doors for good. Carolyn Speight, owner of children’s boutique Annie Em’s, says this project has been a nightmare for her. “When word got out about what was being planned, our sales started dropping off dramatically since people seemed to forget we were still there,” she says. Finding a new location wasn’t as simple as Speight had hoped, either. “All the storefronts we looked at were too expensive for us to consider and still be able to be affordable for our customers. As a small business, we just couldn’t justify the costs.” Speight has finally found a new location downtown at 401 W. Nash St., in the

Walston Center, across the street from the Western Sizzlin restaurant. This is the second move for the longtime children’s boutique. The boutique moved from its original location at 1128 Churchill Avenue, to the location in North Nash Plaza four years ago. Speight wants to assure customers of the store that they aren’t going away. The store is temporarily closed to complete the move to the new location. “We have not closed, and we will not close. Lord willing, Annie Em’s will be a part of Wilson for the next 25 years,” she says. The new, larger location is expected to open by the first of April and will offer a wider array of products and furniture. “We’ll be able to offer some of the products we used to carry but had to stop carrying when we moved to the North Nash Plaza

location. Having more room will give us a chance to have more products to choose from for our customers,” says Speight. Carpets by David owner David Boykin, has relocated his business to the former Flowers Marine building, 2664 Forest Hills Road, and is now open for business. The new location offers a much larger showroom and will allow the company to offer product selections they haven’t been able to carry before. “It’s been a real struggle for us. We feel like we’ve been forced out of what has been our home for 11 years by big business,” says Boykin. “We weren’t given a whole lot of notice that we would need to move. We looked for quite a while and explored our options but when you are working on a short timeframe, there isn’t always a range of options to choose from.” Boykin says they considered purchasing land and building a new showroom, but costs prohibited them from being able to move forward. “The cost of land is expensive and then you have to add the cost of the building,” he says. Boykin finally secured the new location by a sheer stroke of luck. “I went over to

the store (Flowers Marine) to talk to Jerald (Flowers) about some parts for my boat and he mentioned to me that he was looking to retire. We talked a little more and before you knew it, I had found a new location for my store,” he says. “It all worked out for us, but not without a little luck.” Boykin is thankful for the support of his past customers and hopes they will visit him at the new location. “I hope people will remember we are still in Wilson and drive across town to see us. We will be doing a grand opening at the new location and all of our customers are invited to attend,” he says. Fuji Steakhouse, which is currently located in a stand-alone building in front of the shopping center, will be relocating to a space in the Westwood Village shopping center. The shopping center is anchored on one end by the original Walmart location and is home to Tractor Supply Company, Staples, Dollar Tree, and several more stores. They plan to remain in the current location until the new location is ready, which is expected to be in late April or May. Business owners are not the only ones affected by the closure and demolition of

the shopping center. Members of the community have begun to voice concerns about the plans and worry about the impact the projects may have on local businesses. Wilson resident Bob James is concerned about the overall result of adding two Walmart locations. “What about all the small businesses Walmart is going to take out?” James said. “Three Walmarts in one little small town? We can barely keep downtown going.” Traffic in that area is also expected to increase and many residents worry how that will affect their neighborhoods. Karen Corbett, who lives on Wilshire Boulevard, said she was concerned about increased traffic not only for the Nash and Ward intersection but also for area neighborhoods. Corbett said her neighborhood already experiences traffic from people trying to stay away from the busy intersection. “The traffic at Ward and Nash is already challenged,” she said. “People cut through our neighborhood to avoid the intersection. We already have a dangerous situation.” Businesses in the shopping center and residents living close to where the second location is planned may also be faced with

challenges. While the construction won’t affect quite as many businesses that are currently open, the lasting effects of the new tenant may be far worse. Mike Weaver, executive vice president of Pendergraph Cos., said he was concerned about the development due to possible impacts on the 100 senior residents living in Glendale Woods and the Cottages at Glendale, behind the shopping center off Pike Street. “Walmart is a great business,” Weaver said. “It’s a great opportunity for the community. Our biggest concern about the Walmart Neighborhood Market being proposed is traffic. We believe this is going to create a lot of traffic on Pike.” Supporters of the projects feel that the benefits will greatly outweigh the risks and challenges. Congressman Logan Liles is in favor of the projects. “They know that there’s a market here in Wilson that will support them as well as some other people,” Liles said. “They did a survey. They think Wilson will support two more grocery stores. That’s why they’re doing what they’re doing. That’s how business works.”

Debbie Hill Debbie Hill is one busy lady. As the manager for the Wilson County Fairgrounds, she spends her days planning upcoming events and managing the 70 acres of land and buildings that make up the fairgrounds. “There’s always something to do around here. I don’t have time to be bored,” she says. Annually, the fairgrounds is home to many different events, both local and some that are part of national and regional tours. From the county fair, which is held each year in September, to the tractor pull in July and the rodeo in May, there is always something going on at the fairgrounds. The Farmer’s Market is also held there every year, beginning in mid-April. “I pretty much work year round on planning events that are already scheduled. I also work on recruiting new events and making sure the community knows we are here and what we have to offer. Our fairgrounds are not owned or operated by the county so every dollar we earn is raised by having events and renting out our grounds and buildings,” says Hill. Hill began working with the fair in 2012 when the bank she was working for eliminated her position. “I found myself without a job, and luckily a good friend of mine asked me to help him out for a while.” That good friend was Wilson County Fairgrounds board president Bob Walston. “Bob asked me if I would be interested in helping out at the fairgrounds because they were a little short staffed, and I agreed,” she says. Her short stint turned into something more permanent when the board called her 10

March 2015

back in May of 2013 and asked her to come back full-time. “I don’t know why they asked me to come back because I had no idea what I was doing really, but I’m glad they did. I came back because I believed in what they were trying to accomplish out here, and I wanted to be a part of it,” she says. “I think there is so much potential to do great things with our fairgrounds and I want to do my part to make them happen.” Hill has some big plans for the future of the fairgrounds. “We are working on a few new events for this year that I hope will be very successful and return from year to year,” she says. Born and raised in Wilson, Hill always knew this is where she would end up. “We moved to the Washington D.C. area when I was in first grade and I lived there for many, many years. In 1997, I decided I really wanted to come home to Wilson. So, I packed up everything I owned and moved back. I had no job lined up or anything so I was basically starting over again. I found a new job and everything else just fell into place.” When she isn’t busy planning and orchestrating events at the fairgrounds, Hill spends her time caring for her mother who is 83 and lives with her, and she also enjoys working in the yard. “I don’t do it as much as I used to but I still love to do it!”

Janie and Scott Thomas Only 10 minutes outside of town, just down Wiggins Mill Road, is one of the best kept secrets in Wilson. Great Gardens, owned and operated by Janie and Scott Thomas, has been in their current location since 2009, but the couple has shared a love of all things outdoors all their life. Growing up in Maryland, the two attended the same high school, graduating the same year, but did not meet until a year later. Since then the couple has been together through the building of a business, growing countless plants and raising three sons, two of whom work for them. “I started as a ‘Saturday boy’ at a nursery back in high school,” Scott shared. With this company he worked his way up from the bottom learning all aspects of the business. Janie began doing office work for a grower, but quickly found her way outside, where she felt that she was meant to be. Scott had lived in NC once before he moved his family here. Then after returning to manage a nursery, the couple purchased Smith Evergreen in Wilson in 1996. Now they specialize in a variety of landscaping services, as well as growing and trees, shrubs and flowering plants. “We grow 80 to 90 percent of the plants we sell,” Janie confidently explained. Many garden centers only sell plants they stock from other growers. At Great Gardens the couple propagates cuttings from their plants through a variety of green houses over the period of four months to a year. “It really gives you a sense of accomplishment to work with plants,” she commented. In addition to the nursery the Thomas family provides landscape design and installation services, irrigation contracting, brick pavers, fishponds and retaining walls. “Landscaping has really exploded

for us,” Scott commented. “But, we’re really trying to grow the garden center side of our business as well.” Their retail space features items for bird enthusiasts, locally made pottery, gardenthemed decorations for indoors and out, gift ideas, work from local artists, as well as stained glass pieces Scott has made himself. “We’re adding a great deal of merchandise for the coming season,” Janie shared excitedly. The couple’s son, Scott Jr., is managing the retail side of their business. Their middle son, Josh, also works at the garden center as a landscape manager and their youngest, Ethan, graduated from ECU in December with a degree in mechanical and electrical engineering. When not working outside, the couple enjoys playing there. “We’re outdoor people,” Scott continued. “We love camping, fishing, hiking, four-wheeling… you name it.” They have also volunteered their time, talents and recourses to the Wilson community. Great Gardens was responsible for building the Children’s Secret Garden at the Wilson Botanical Garden and the couple has approached a variety of civic organizations about donating plants for landscaping. All-in-all they love growing plants, working with gardeners and being part of Wilson. March 2015

A Family Af-Fair

The Wilson County Fairgrounds has more to offer than just the county fair Since 1933, the Wilson County Fairgrounds has been home to the annual Wilson County Fair. Over the years, things with the fair and at the fairgrounds have changed but

18

March 2015

one thing remains the same: the commitment to providing good, quality, fun family events to our community. The fairgrounds is comprised of 70 acres of land and has several buildings that are available to be rented out by anyone that wishes to use them. There is a common misconception that the fairgrounds are owned by Wilson County. “That’s not the case,” says Debbie Hill, manager for the Wilson County Fairgrounds. “We are not

county owned. We are a not for profit organization and we receive no local or state financial support. All the money we receive is what we raise by holding events and renting our facilities.” The fairgrounds is overseen by an 18 member board of directors. Twelve of the board members are elected from Post 13 of the American Legion. The other six members are at-large community leaders who are nominated by the board. “Our board of directors is amazing,” says Hill. “With their support, we are turning things around and making them better than they have ever been.” The Wilson County Fairgrounds is part of the North Carolina Association of Agricultural Fairs, or NCAOAF. Members of this organization are the community,

county, regional, and state fairs across North Carolina. For a fair to become a member, they must be certified by the NC Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services and meet the requirements as stated in the by-laws of the association. In the early days, the fairgrounds were home to several events that haven’t been seen for quite some time. “They used to hold horse races and NASCAR sanctioned events out here,” says Bob Walston,Wilson County Fairgrounds board president. “In fact, we hold the record for the only NASCAR race event to be canceled due to fire.” In 1957, the grandstands caught fire and burned to the ground, causing the event to have to be canceled. Though the annual fair is one of the main attractions held at the fairgrounds, there are

many events that happen throughout the year. “We want people to be able to utilize the grounds year-round,” says Hill. “We have events all the time.” Year round events include the livestock show and sale, Relay for Life, the Police Department Hispanic Festival, the 4-H Ag Safety Day, and more. “We participate in the 301 Endless Yardsale every year and we open our grounds to the Cowboy Church on Tuesday nights,” says Hill. “The farmers market will also be here again this year and should open in mid-April.” Two large events that were held last year will make a comeback this year. “We will definitely be bringing the rodeo and tractor pull back for 2015,” says Hill. The rodeo, a SRA sanctioned event, will be held May 29 - 30. The tractor pull, a NTPA event, will be held July 31 - Aug. 1. It will also include a farm toy show this year. “We had tremendous success with both of these events last year, so we are looking forward to bringing them back this year.” A new event that will be held at the fairgrounds this year is the Spring Craft Show. It will be held from April 30 to May 2 and will include vendors offering all sorts of handmade products as well as home based business products. Admission to the event will be free of charge and vendor booths are available. “Vendors will get an 8’x10’ booth space with a table for them to set up their products. We will limit the home based business participants to one per company, so once a vendor with that particular product signs up, we won’t be able to sign up another one,” says Hill. Vendor spaces

are $60 and anyone interested in participating can contact the fairgrounds for more information. “We also have something else new in the works,” says Hill. Currently, Hill is in the planning stages of a Fourth of July event. “We want to put together a good old fashioned Fourth of July event that everyone in the community can participate in. We’re planning to have a pie eating contest, horseshoe pitching contest, games for kids and more.” All the details for the event have not been planned out and Hill wants the community to know that as soon as plans are made, the information will be released. “We will make it happen. As soon as we know what we are doing, the community will know too. Just stay tuned!” For the first time, there will be a Wilson County Fair scholarship program. “For many years, we have

participated in the NCAOAF scholarship program and out of the years we have participated, we have had about eight to ten winners from our fair. This year, we wanted to have our own scholarship,” says Walston. The scholarship program will be available to any high school senior who has participated in some way with

the fair and that lives in Wilson County. Whether it be through the Jr. Fair Board, a 4-H event or a livestock event, participation in some way is required to be eligible for the scholarship. 2015 will be the 82nd annual Wilson County Fair. Big things are planned for this year. “Because of the tremendous success of last year’s fair, we will be extending the fair this year from six days to nine days,”

says Hill. “We will be opening on Sept. 11, and you will want to be here that day. We will have a tribute to the events that happened on Sept. 11, 2001 and you will definitely want to see it.” The fair will run through Sept. 19. Big Rock Amusements, based in Michigan, will return this year and will be bringing a few new things with them. “There will be a new, spectacular ride that is 110-feet-tall,” says Hill. “It’s going to be awesome.” Fairgoers can also expect to see a new tiger show, Tiger Encounters, as well as a martial arts demonstration by Team Rock. Team Rock is comprised of members of the USA team of martial artists. The group travels internationally and will invite members of the public to participate in their demonstrations. Advance tickets will be available again this year and Hill advises anyone that wants to take advantage of buying tickets early to do so as soon as possible. “Get your tickets early. Last year, we sold out of advance tickets and we anticipate that happening again this year.” The fair will open Monday through Friday at 4 p.m., Saturday at 12 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m. Wednesday is Senior Day and the gates will open at 11 a.m. Thursday is Kid’s Day and the gates will open at 9 a.m. For more information about renting the fairgrounds or the buildings, or to learn more about upcoming events, please email info@wilsoncountyfair.org or call 252.237.8443.

Hops on tap in ENC When retired Army Colonel Guilford Leggett and his wife Pamela purchased farmland off Packhouse Road in Wilson, their son, a lover of craft beer, suggested that his parents’ start growing hops. Uncertain if the plants would thrive in this climate, the couple began cautiously installing only a small system for growing this plant essential to beer making. But, after pulling in a bountiful harvest last August, the Leggetts have since quadrupled their operation, with plans for even more expansion in the near future. When first looking into starting this business the couple did a great deal of research, talking with many growers and visiting farms, all of which were outside of the state. “Everyone was really friendly and willing to share what they knew,” commented. Guilford. With numerous brewpubs, craft and microbreweries in the state, the venture seemed to be a good investment. Just east of I-95 there are breweries in Carolina Beech, Farmville, Fayetteville (east of I-95 in spirit), 22

March 2015

Grandy, Kill Devil Hills, Kinston, Nashville, Rocky Mount, Southport, Smithfield (also east in spirit), Trenton and Wilmington with ones soon to be developed in Tarboro and right here in Wilson. Cardinal Pine Farm can boast that they are the first commercial hop producers in eastern NC ready to supply these brewers along with the many home-brew clubs in the region. Last year the Leggetts gave away half their crop as promotional samples, selling the other half to Fullsteam Brewery in Durham. So far the business has several preorders for their product that will again be harvested in August. This year Cardinal Pine Farm is going to grow five varieties of hops. Cascade is to be their largest crop as this type is used in most beer recipes. Additionally, they will be plating centennial, Columbus, nugget and Chinook. Each plant creates a different flavor when used

in brewing. Most of these will find their way into aromatics like summer IPAs. However, beer making is not the only use of this interesting plant. “Jeremy Law purchased some of our hops to use in his restaurant, SoCo,” Guilford shared. “We also shipped our product to a restaurant in Baltimore and I had a telephone call from a woman wanting hops to make therapeutic pillows.” The aromatic quality of hops was previously used in this way by Native Americans. “We don’t know what the full potential of this crop is because we’re still learning,” he said.

Visiting their farm one might think they are walking into a power plant from yesteryear. Tall telephone poles rise up from the land in a perfect grid, tethered by a cable system that provides stability. Vertical strings drop from above providing a training line for the long-growing vines. “In this way the space can be maximized,” commented Guilford. An intricate system of pulleys allows the growing lines to be raised and lowered for training plants, harvesting and in the event of hurricane force winds. The couple recently received a $15,000 NC Agricultural Ventures Grant that redirects monies from waning tobacco subsidies. “This grant is what has allowed us to install more poles and try additional types of hops,” Guilford said. Cardinal Pine Farm is a family company that draws a lot of support from the local community. “The absolute best thing about this business is that I get to work with my wonderful wife,” Guilford boasted. Pamela takes an active role in the planting, harvesting and marketing of the farm. The couple is also aided by their son in Maryland – who got them started on this in the first place – with marketing, IT and social media concerns. The Leggetts’ other son and daughter also help out in this regard along with their son-in-law, who provides legal counsel. Another principle employee is family friend Bob Jones. The retired educator enjoys staying active helping out in any way he can. “Bob is a born again farmer,” Guilford joked. When the hops were harvested last year, the couple invited members of the Wilson community to come out and assist bringing in the crop. “Seventeen people showed up to help, despite the fact we had about four and a half inches of rain that day,” Guilford said. In return, the family entertained their gracious helpers with food, refreshments and a good time. “Everyone had a lot of fun that day,” he smiled. “It was one of the best times I’ve ever had.” Next August the couple will be inviting people to come out once again, hoping to lure more helpers with a promise that their son will be cooking for everyone.
