Tis the season to indulge in gift buying and with only about two weeks left until Christmas, some shoppers will be nestled by the fire purchasing online while others wait in long lines at the big box stores. Others will choose to shop small with the local retailers in specialty stores for more unique items or for gift certificates. Choosing where and how to make your purchases contributes equally to economic recovery, right? Not necessarily. According to Advocates for Independent Businesses, a coalition of 14 groups coordinated by Institute for Local Self-Reliance (ILSR), your buying decisions this season coupled with those of your neighbors affect the number of jobs disproportionately when the majority of your purchases are online with remote retailers. According to ILSR, for every 10 million spent shopping locally, 57 jobs are created while the same spending online with Amazon only creates 14 jobs, a net difference of 43 jobs! Part of the frenzy driving shoppers to the internet is the allure of online purchases that are often legally sold sales tax free. This is a competitive disadvantage for local, independent business owners in brick-and-mortar stores who, by law, impose a 6.75% sales tax for similar products. Comparing local independently owned businesses to larger mega stores, a study by Civics Economics in August of 2012, found that independently owned businesses spend more on local labor, on goods procured locally for resale, and on services from local providers resulting in a larger share of their money staying in the local economy to support other businesses and jobs. Small businesses are the largest national employer with 28 million of them representing over 99% of all US companies and creating over 66% of all new jobs. A study conducted in Portland by the Maine Center for Economic Policy in Decem-
ber of 2011, found that every $100 spent at a locally owned business contributed an additional $58 to the local economy while the same $100 spent at a chain store yielded only $33 in local economic impact. Mathematically, investing the same $100 in small business represents a 75% increase to the economy over the same investment in the chain store. The study concluded that if the residents were to shift only 10% of their spending from mega stores to locally owned businesses, it would generate $127 million in additional local revenue and 874 new jobs. In NC, small business employs 47% of the workforce. According to the Wilson Economic Development Council Industry Facts, there are over 1830 private businesses in Wilson County. As local small business owners prosper, many invest back into the community through philanthropic endeavors. Additionally, these business owners are generally local residents with deep community roots who are not likely to leave the area and who are vested in the community’s future with many of them actively serving on local boards, in civic groups, and on committees focused on community betterment. As the local business landscape expands with both the small entrepreneurs and the mega retailers, a snowball effect can occur when our community shops locally. Healthy business growth often provides new job opportunities for both the businesses and suppliers, though in a higher ratio for the small independent businesses. Newly created permanent jobs can lead to local population growth and new population spending, resulting in additional sales tax revenue and increasing income tax and property tax bases from which additional revenue can then fund improved infrastructure, greater investment in schools, hospitals, and other necessities along with recreational opportunities. The Small Business Center at Wilson Community College has been instrumental in assisting businesses as a community based provider of
2
education, counseling, training, and referral with free confidential counseling and free seminars designed to increase the success rate and viability of businesses in the area. The SBC is part of the NC Community College Small Business Center Network that assist in starting an average of more than 650 businesses each year. Small Business Centers have an economic impact in 90% of all NC Counties each year, helping to create and retain over 3,000 jobs annually. There is a uniqueness about our community with Wilson, our county seat, being named an AllAmerican City in 2003, and today offering a quaint downtown area slowly being revitalized with small businesses where the Vollis Simpson Whirligig Park entertains locals and tourist alike. With business growth in the northwestern part of Wilson and a significant manufacturing presence exceeding 90 companies throughout the county representing automotive parts, tobacco processing, pharmaceuticals, packaging and food preparation, container, and specialty equipment, one can easily note that our leading industries are diversified. Dotted around this landscape exists a combination of smaller wholesale, retail, and service industries selling to each other and the end consumer. A community with a smorgasbord of small businesses helps ensure innovation, product variety, and niche catering to the specific interests and needs of the local customers while offering an appealing tourist stop or destination. This holiday season, make an investment in our local economy by choosing to buy local and shift 10% of your internet or mega store purchases to small local businesses to help ensure a healthier economy and a higher quality of living for yourself and other Wilson County residents. This article contributed by Melissa S. Evans, Small Business Center Director for Wilson Community College. Local residents considering a small business start-up or expansion are encouraged to contact the Small Business Center for free counseling and free seminars.
