The Wilson Spring EXPO will offer under one roof more than 100 vendors with a variety of services and merchandise for the home, garden or business. The expo will be held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at the Wilson Recreation Center, 500 Sunset Road. The

event, hosted by the Wilson Chamber of Commerce, is increasing in popularity with all vendor spaces sold out more than a month ago. “This year’s Wilson Spring EXPO builds on last year’s tremendous success,” said Ryan Simons, Wilson Chamber of Commerce president. “We’ve sold out of exhibitor space, and expect over 100 vendors specializing in home

and garden, food service, business, and more.” Small, medium and large sized vendors will be set up in the gymnasium, hallways, in smaller side rooms and outside. Rebecca Tew, Wilson Chamber of Commerce member services manager, said there will be a variety of businesses represented, including some from nearby counties. Some

vendors will have items for sale, others will showcase their services and offerings, and several are planning to give out door prizes. “This is going to be an awesome show,” Tew said. “There will be something for everyone.” Some of the door prizes include a seven-night stay in St. Martin, a 30-minute massage, Adirondack chair, plants from Raleigh Road Nursery, a $150 Rainmate room aromatizer, a $500 coupon toward the purchase of a new tractor and gift cards. Again this year, there will be a kid’s corner that will provide games, inflatables and other activities. Lowe’s Build and Grow program will be onsite for children at 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. “We’ll have lots of games and a bouncy house for kids,” Tew said. A variety of local talent will also perform on the stage inside the gymnasium. Some of the performances include participation from the Fike High School cheerleaders and Brand Performing Arts. The recreation miniature train will

also be operating, and rides will be offered at no cost, Tew said. There should be plenty of parking available, with vendor participants being asked to park away from the recreation center this year. Shuttles will be available if the parking lot is full.

Some of the outside vendors this year include Greenlight community broadband, which will set up a demonstration trailer for the public, East Coast Equipment and their tractors, Pelican’s Snowballs and Brewmasters. The expo has continued to draw interest from businesses each year, with many returning for the annual event. The expo annually offers the public the chance to learn more about what is offered in the Wilson County area. “There simply isn’t a better way for our businesses to directly inform the regional consumer than the Wilson Spring EXPO,” Simons said. “The weather forecast is perfect, and we anticipate an even larger crowd of interested potential customers than last year.” rochelle@wilsontimes.com | 265-7818

Tickets on sale at Expo for fundraiser to benefit daycare center By Jennifer Strickland

HISTORY

The 2015 Chamber of Commerce Dynamic Leadership Class is currently selling tickets for a fundraiser to benefit the Hattie Daniels Daycare Center. All proceeds raised from ticket sales for a spaghetti dinner will go towards funding a trip for children attending the daycare center to the North Carolina Zoo on June 18. “The majority of the children attending the Hattie Daniels Daycare Center are from low-income families, and they may never have the opportunity to travel outside of Wilson,” says Joey Lamm, a member of the Dynamic Leadership class and board member for Hattie Daniels Daycare Center. “This trip would give them an opportunity to see what life is like outside of their own neighborhood.”

The Golden Rule Kindergarten, now known as Hattie Daniels Daycare Center, was founded in the home of the Rev. Hattie Luvenia Owens Daniels in 1949. Years later, the school was moved to a home belonging to the Church of God. In 1973, the Golden Rule Kindergarten was informed that it could no longer continue to operate and was ordered to close the facility in 1974. Though it was a devastating blow to the families who had come to depend on the daycare center, the fight wasn’t over yet. In the fall of 1974, a non-profit organization made up of parents, professional men, social workers and concerned citizens of Wilson County, was formed. It would become known as Wilson Educational

Opportunity, Inc. This group fought to bring back the daycare center that was so crucial to the city of Wilson and its residents. In October 1974, the state licensing board inspected a selected portion of Eastern North Carolina Hospital and finally granted approval to operate a daycare center with a capacity of 116 children.Upon the opening of the new center, the name was officially changed to the Hattie Daniels Daycare Center. In May 1976, the Hattie Daniels Daycare Center received certification by the Department of Human Resources and was the only certified center in operation providing services to the low-income families living in Wilson County. The center continued to grow and in 1986, the board of directors made the decision to purchase a three acre tract

of land on Lipscomb Road, the current location of the center. All funding for the daycare center comes from the Department of Social Services and donations. “This center is essentially non-profit. If a parent does have to pay for their child to attend, their contribution is very small,” says Lamm. FUNDRAISER INFORMATION Tickets can be purchased from any Dynamic Leadership class member or the Chamber of Commerce office and are $7. Public service officers, including police, fire and EMS will be able to purchase tickets at a reduced rate of $6 per ticket. Tickets will be available during the Expo and can be purchased at the Dynamic Leadership booth, #18. The dinner will be held on Tuesday, March 10 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. All plates will include spaghetti, salad and bread. Pickup will be at Forest Hills Middle School at 1210 Forest Hills Road. Delivery is

available for orders of 10 or more plates. Lamm estimates there will be between 75 and 80 children, along with approximately 30 staff members and volunteers attending the trip. It is expected to cost around $58 per child for the trip. If you wish to donate to the fundraiser, you may drop donations by the Chamber of Commerce office during regular business hours. Members of the Dynamic Leadership class can also take donations. Anyone wishing to sponsor a child for the trip is encouraged to contact a Dynamic Leadership class member for more information. Additional fundraisers will also be held to help raise necessary funds for the trip. Raffle tickets will be sold through May 16. Grand prize is a $500 gift card to Firestone for automotive services. Other prizes will include gift certificates to Five Touch Salon and Spa and a handmade quilt donated by Nora Finch. On May 10, Pizza Inn will be donating all tips to the fundraiser. Contact the Chamber of Commerce or any member of the Dynamic Leadership class for more information on fundraisers.

“Rocky Mount Windows and Doors installed new vinyl siding and tilt windows as well as a new double door at our home in Bailey this past year. We were very impressed with their quality of work, not to mention how prompt and courteous Mike’s crew was. We would definitely recommend them to anyone!” John Bunn and Lisa Pearson, Bailey, NC “The installation of the Alside Mezzo Clima-Tech vinyl replacement windows by Rocky Mount Windows and Doors was one of the best investments we’ve made in our home. Mike Roberson and his crew did an outstanding job from start to finish. These energy efficient windows have helped lower our heating and cooling bill and made cleaning a breeze. Thank you!” Ron and Pam Bennett, Wilson, NC

This is a comprehensive approach to your overall health and fitness. We make available to you Personal Training, Body Composition Analysis with our Body Comp Scale and Nutritional/Diet software assistance. With these tools you are able to take control of your health and make positive changes to your lifestyle. During your initial consultation body composition testing is performed, goals are set and body measurements are taken. After the analysis work is completed the Victory Fitness Lifestyle Coach can help select the proper PhD approved meal plan template that best suits your dietary needs to meet your goals. The meal plan can be modified if you desire. Meal plan reports and grocery lists are printed and given to you to follow for a period that averages 2-3 weeks. Follow-ups are typically every 1-2 weeks and consist of a body composition analysis, providing food alternatives using the exchange list, and visiting the goals and tracking module to confirm that the rate of loss/gain is consistent with the goals you set.
