MAISON DE VERRE_ Introduction

"The House of Glass" is such a highlight of modern architecture in the 20th century. Located in France, built-in 1928. Design by designer Pierre Chareau and Architect Bernard Bijvoet. Which makes a powerful influence in modern architecture design history with the concept, technology, material, and craftsmanship. Pierre Chareau, an alchemist of materials. Born in Le Havre, France, 1883. As an interior and furniture designer, Chareau was a master of contrast and parallel. He is an expert in combining the cold hardware of industrial modernism with high-end luxury material, such as velvety textiles, exotic woods, and alabaster light fixtures. His avantgarde designed furniture proof of his special aesthetics. The project of Maison de Verre presented Chareau and Bijvoet numbers of problems, due to their clients, Dr. Jean Dalsace's requirements and the stubborn neighbor of the building. Dr. Dalsace intended to demolish the 18th century-old townhouse he bought and renovate it into his private residence combine with his obstetrics and gynecology clinic. Instead of design the same 18th-century classic French style façade and space, Chareau came up and innovation idea, "The machine can live in.". "The machine can live in" is base on the idea that creates a space or area that deploy different structure of furniture that have movable partitions or multifunction, to make one's life more convenient. The design feature industrial and modern material, such as metal, steel, rubber, and glass. This idea is a modern living vision at that period. The most well-known feature of the Maison de Verre is the north and south façade. Instead of the regular walls and windows, Chareau switch the whole façade with glass bricks, the latest construction material in the early 20th century. Chareau also keep this transparent idea appears in the indoor structure and elements design too. The famous one is the sliding door of the main staircase. The sliding door is made by the curved metal panel, but with tiny holes on it. This craftsmanship gives us an illusion of see through the metal panel, and create a perfect shade between public and private area. There also have a lot of interesting designs in this Maison too.
