Are Beauty Pageants Old Fashioned or Empowering? As a child I was a huge fan of watching Miss World on the TV. The tall, beautiful, slim types strutted their stuff in an itsy bitsy bikini, while a panel of male judges watched on. As popular as these types of pageants are, especially in the States, they are often met with backlash from feminist groups, who consider them degrading to women. Still, I loved the glamour of it all; the girls looked so happy on stage, hoping to win the crown. I was torn. For ten years, my pageant dreams were put on hold as I fulfilled another dream:working for Disneyland Paris as an entertainer. A colleague of mine was in the pageant scene and inspired me to once again think about entering. Alas, I was now 29 (most pageant systems age up to 27), never managed to grow past 4ft 11, and was a size 12; well over the stereotypical standard of a beauty queen. Then I found UK’s National Miss! A brand new pageant, with divisions for womenof all ages. Directed by and judged by women. No height requirements, no size requirements, it was perfect for me. I could hardly wait to send in my application. Being a performer, I am used to auditions and being in front of a crowd, but the thought of competing against well established pageant girls terrified me. When I heard I’d made it to the 2021 final, I was anxious but thrilled. I was giventhe title of UK’s National Miss Leeds and learned more about what was expected of me.A portion of my pageant journey would be based on the stage: getting glam in hair and makeup, looking like a human disco ball in a gorgeous gown. But there is also the interview section, appearances, charity work and platforms. I realised that this title wasn’t just a chance to look pretty in a sash on Instagram, it was achance to make a difference. After my Granddad passed away from cancer, I had always wanted to give back to Macmillan Cancer Support. Now I had the perfect opportunity. Throughout lockdown, I held weekly online quizzes via Facebook where people could donate and get an hour of entertainment. I had never properly raised money for charity before. It’s a challenge, to talk to people, ask them for money. It’s not easy. After a few months of hard work I had raised over £600 6

" F EEL E M P OWER ED AN D WAN T WOR LD PE ACE " for Macmillan, way over my expectations. This is just a tiny bit of what the pageant community achieves.Since 2012, Pageant Girl UK, the organisation that runs UK’s National Miss, hasraised over £500,000 for their chosen charities. I was added to an online community with the other candidates. It was truly heartwarming to receive support from these strangers. From donating to each other’s events and sending encouraging messages, to exchanging tips and tricks of the trade, I was overwhelmed with kindness. The pageant hasn’t even begun and Ihave already gotten so much out of it. My anxiety of comparing myself to my competitors has gone out of the window. I am now just as excited to connect with my sisterhood at the finals, as I am to show off my achievements in a pretty dress. I feel empowered. And we really do want world peace. follow kelly on instagram @kellydawntaylor

A ANI K A At the young age of seven, Aanika began her explorative journey into herself when she stepped into those heavy brass bracelets. Allowing the classical brass sounds to weave her into the wondrous colours of Classical Indian, Folk, Contemporary and the ever so popular Bollywood styles of Indian Dance. Performing in UK, India, Spain, Japan and Canada her holistic dance led to a discovery of new things. With a passion for dance Aanika gradually extended her repertoire to Yoga. A desire to understand her inner world took her to various ashrams, taking out time from life, as she studied meditation under the personal guidance of learned gurus. This journey led her to teach and practice yoga as a way of life for the past seven years. A student of life, Aanika is a Yoga Instructor, Indian Classical Dancer and an Ayurvedic Masseuse, with the versatility to encompass all three. All of her practices involve holistic inner and outer body work. As a child of New Delhi in India, Aanika trained in Yoga from the Sivananda Vedanta Institute of Yoga, Kerala, India. To truly find herself in Yoga, she immersed in further Yoga training from Yoga Alliance, Mysore, India. Hatha Relax and Hatha Power are both practices that Aanika has mastered. Yoga and dance are two equal parts of a whole which she endeavours to bring together in a stimulated exciting language of Yogic Dance. Join Aanika in finding the depths of your true selves, through Yoga and related practices. 12

TBR E AK STOR Y OF R EB U ILDI NG HER LI F E .

The fairy tale I don’t think anyone dreams of becoming a single parent, we dream of a perfect life with your soulmate and raising amazing children with them. I had everything that other people dreamed of. The big 4 bedroom house in Surrey, the flashy cars, trips abroad 4 times a year. We were living the life, so it may seem. However it wasn’t enough, I just wasn’t happy. My relationship was not what it seemed, I was doing it all, working part-time, looking after my 2 babies, I felt powerless, stuck, not good enough and my self-esteem had plummeted, my health was suffering, in essence, I was exhausted. I couldn’t see a way out until I couldn’t take it anymore, I decided I’d had enough and the single parent journey begins.

Coming out with the truth

Leaving was the only decision I felt I had. It was scary, the security, the fear of the unknown, my boys were only 4.5 and 2.5 years old. Where do I go? What do I do? Who do I tell? The shame, the guilt. I was making myself ill. I dreaded telling my parents who lived in India. So many questions and I had no answers. One day I was in a park with my boys, I looked and felt miserable. My SIL

" LE AVI N G WA S THE ONLY D E CISI ON I F ELT I HAD "

said out the blue, “I know you’re not happy, you don’t need to live this way you know”. Suddenly the tears flowed and I broke down. I said “how do you know?” She said, “We’ve known for a while, it’s obvious”. I ended up staying a couple of nights and pouring out my heart and soul. I went home and started to organise my exit plan. It took 6 months, counseling, and countless trips to the Royal Marsden for diagnostics thinking the worst and planning to leave, telling the in-laws and my husband. I just knew that year 2008 was the last Christmas I was going to have with all of them. After Christmas, I plucked up the courage and went to tell them with my A4 clipboard and notes, so I didn’t miss a single thing. They were shocked and said things that I’m embarrassed to repeat. My husband has a lot of issues that they didn’t know about so I can understand their disbelief.

" LI V I NG WI TH SO M E ONE F OR SI X M ON THS K N OWI NG TH AT IM LE AV I NG"

July 4th Living with someone for 6 months knowing that I’m leaving was the hardest part of this all. We were civil, he buried his head in the sand. I was relieved there were no more arguments. I had organised a flat for us to live in, the nursery for my youngest and a primary school for my eldest. I can’t til this day believe how easy everything fell into place. It’s like the universe had my back. All the worries and anxiety felt like they had melted away. I was finally leaving the misery behind and living a new life. Still scared, still anxious but I was somehow ok with it all. The day came to pack up and move. Independence day I called it, well it was July the 4th after all. My husband wanted to help so I let him, and we finally moved to our new flat to start our new life.

Today, 12 years on

for 4.5 half years and made some wonderful friends. I joined some social groups and came across Aruna and ASP (Asian Single Parents Network). I was amazed to see so many women in my shoes and I wasn't alone. I quickly joined and went to quite a few events. It was amazing not only for me but also for my boys. Grateful to have found them. Their dad and I kept in touch and agreed we wanted what’s best for them and made their visits consistent. I did meet someone and we dated for 3 years, it was the best experience. We moved to South London and we are still here. I got a job at a school doing science and now that they’re teenagers, I moved into science management, a job I absolutely love. I also trained to be a breakthrough freedom coach and I help people all over the world with shifting their negative limiting beliefs, emotions, and fears, I love it. My biggest lesson in all this that I realised I needed to take responsibility for my own happiness and have fun with life and I do just that. Wimmio would like to thank Mala and Aruna and everyone involved in ASP network for allowing us to reshare Mala story which we were given permission to use from ASP network as we continue to support women and other supporting networks. If your a single asian parent and need support please visit their website www.aspnetwork.org. uk , become a member and get support from other women who have first hand experience of what you may be going through. follow on instagram @asp.network

It felt weird at first, knew everything and happy again. Took time to build myself up again. I got into personal development as I wanted answers and so grateful I did. We stayed in West London

Abi Jenaé is a surprisingly fierce artist from South London! Looks can be really deceiving. There is a saying that looks can kill. In this case its Abi Jenaé’s combination of looks and lyrics that is the real killer, sprinkled with a hint of mad flows and crazy punch lines; surely more than enough to create a stormy aftershock. Having a deep passion for music since the age of 7 is definitely an advantage for her because her passion for music has stuck with her soul till this very day. She grew up listening to a wide range of music including Hip Hop, Grime, R&B and Afrobeat. However, she was much more interested in listening to old school Rap and Hip Hop and was inspired by legends such as Slick Rick, Nas, Tupac, The Notorious B.I.G, 2Pac and Jay Z. Abi Jenaé started spitting bars in the mid 00’s and it all began when a friend of hers tried to MC in a free class period and Abi Jenaé thought she could do better and started writing bars. From that day onwards she has been consistently writing lyrics for the last two decades.

" TO BE THE BE ST AND WOR K WI TH TH E BE ST "

She started rapping in 2006 when a producer called Bobby Digital wanted her to vocal some of his Hip Hop productions. Abi Jenaé had to switch up her tempo of MCing in order to rap at half the tempo, maintaining her flow at a much slower pace than she was used to. Abi Jenaé and Bobby Digital managed to collaborate on a production that contained the genre of Grime and Hip Hop mixed together, which Abi Jenaé calls ‘Grimey Hip Hop’. Subsequently, she teamed up with heavy weight producer Nana Rogues who understood that particular sound and they collaborated on several songs. She likes to express herself through music, and adds a touch of her artistic flavour, transforming those old influences she is making her own style fresh and unique. She grew up surrounded by a lot of negativity. Where she grew up rapping was a culture and part of life. It was how the people on the block told their stories, adding rhythm and beat. Rapping is part of her culture

and that’s what inspires her to keep on making music till this very day.Abi Jenaé has a real passion for music, and that’s what separates her, allowing her to prosper in her own lane. Her passion will drive her to success and her determination to break the music industry will take her far! She has worked with a range of talented producers all over the world, tapping into the hottest UK talent of course, as well as collaborating with creatives in Lagos and New York. She is an energetic, passionate and dynamic individual who is passionate about making her mark in the music industry. The multi-talented and versatile music guru is also a smart, diverse and confident performer set on making a difference in the industry by fusing elements from varied genres in producing a unique sound.Abi Jenaé is all about music. What you hear is as real as it gets. She is a genuine, independent woman, a voice from the streets who can communicate to the masses. Her passion will drive her to success and her determination to break the music industry will take her far! Plans for the future? Delusional. You made an art of me Rendered me, to feel ghastly about myself. Irreplaceable like Midas, warm and golden running through my cheeks. I'm deluded to believe that you were imperial. I wrote a poem about you. i hate you. The world is a mess, by trying to change it, being imperial is not human. There's nothing wrong with the world, bloodshed in human hands.. Your soul never met mine, you thought too much. A black shoe, I hate you. You created a faultless world for yourself, you abhorred your own kind, you didn't wear a mask in your world. Were you,you
