HAR P E R G I L L FOUNDERS THOUGHTS : COMMUNITY BUILDING
Vaal & Vaal Co-Founder Harper Gill created the private members club based on her own desire to have a creative and aspirational space to work, play and pamper around a community of likeminded individuals. Her launch campaign ‘Believe Become Belong’ was centred around the concept of community building. Harper shares her top three reasons as to why community building is important for company growth. A SENSE OF BELONGING The saying “it’s lonely at the top” is something I can relate too! In my early days of business I found it hard to find people that I could relate too. My friends in careers didn’t understand my working hours, financial pressures, and staffing issues. For me, community provides a support network for businesses (and individuals) and a feeling that we all look for as humans: a sense of belonging. Vaal & Vaal was established for this exact reason – to allow people on a similar journey and with similar aspirations to have somewhere they can belong. A space (or ‘community’) where our members can connect, share and feel accepted by their peers. By feeling like you belong, you have the confidence to take risks and try new things – a recipe for growth. AN OPPORTUNITY TO LEARN
can tap into this, then it has the power to be a powerful marketing tool. Advertising and social media allows you to send your message to thousands (if not millions) of people, but nothing is quite remembered like a personal recommendation. Forbes reckons 84% of people are more likely to trust a recommendation if it comes from a friend – meaning the community can be a very powerful tool. One mistake I made in my early days is that I didn’t use my own voice. Had I attended networking events or spoke about my business more, it would have meant that one more person in the community knew about my business. Imagine if on average each customer recommends you to three people and one of those people act upon it and then recommends to three more people, then the return on investment is better than any PR or advertising campaign you can do!Give people a reason to talk about and recommend your business – our impeccable customer service and level of quality in everything we deliver provides a memorable experience worth talking about. Honestly, the amount of people that have joined up as members from a recommendation from someone else speaks for itself. The community is powerful – use it to your advantage. https://www.facebook.com/vaalandvaal/ https://www.instagram.com/vaalandvaal/ www.vaalandvaal.co.uk
Companies do market research to help come up with new ideas or solutions. The same approach should be taken with yourself – do research, put yourself out there!Keeping your circle small limits thinking. When you participate in a community, you can benefit from a wealth of specialised knowledge and experience. for example – going to fitness classes teaches you about health, museums teach you history, and business events give you valuable insight. Human nature means we learn from each other much easier than we learn from a book.By broadening your community, you broaden your mind and diversify your thinking. Last year, we launched Vaal WOMEN (a platform for females to access advice, contacts and experiences from successful and aspirational women) and VaalASPIRE (a platform for pioneers, game changers and challengers) as a way of helping our members have access to a broad range of knowledge. Speakers and themes vary, but one thing that remains consistent is that the Vaal & Vaal ‘community’ provides an opportunity to learn.

A STR ONĂ„U TICA When i was young, i decided to study something related witht he people and how the mind works. I studied psychology for some years in the university but during this period. I noticed that treatiing the problems when when you are young prevents you to develop an illness and i changed my career. I was a teacher for kids for many years, i consider the education the foundation of everything and i was so happy working with children providing the tools for dealing with their emotional issues. At some point, I had an offer to work for another completely different field: Video games, I changed my Job, my city and i started this adventure because i was a ganer since i was a kid and i appreaciate the video games and all the games i have played, the skills i have developed and how the video games introduced to me. The fantasy world with all the unique experiences that you cannot have in any other ways. I continued to work within the gamimg industry , as i started as a tester and worked my way up to a 3d artist in a very estabished company. i taught my self 3D design at home and through my persistance i got noticed and they gave me a really nice role within the company. Thats when i realised i could learn what ever i want and i wanted to be come a illustrator. I started with portraits as i love how the expression of a person can tell you so much about the person. I use pencil and then add watercolors, soft pastels and colored pencils. I was experimenting and now i focus more in digital art and my drawings now look more of a painting than an illustration. but i am really proud to how far i have come without no formal training no art education and i like all the things this new way gives to me Nowadays i still combining some job related with children but i never stopped drawing and learning new things. My dream is to be a full time illustrator, maybe a teacher of drawing/painting also because art is such a great way to express, understand and love yourself and also having a nice piece of art in your house and how can make you smile each time you look at it.

A Z IZ A Jessica Aziza is a singer-songwriter and producer from Sheffield, UK. Her musical journey began in 2006, where she found her voice by winning a singing competition. She went on to discover the industry through songwriting and recording music with a local Sheffield based rap group while performing at various events in and around Yorkshire. Upon turning 18, she gained the legal freedom to begin travelling further afield, performing in bands, groups, and as a tribute artist to a few well-known stars. Her journey so far has taken her all over the UK and abroad to places such as London - Savoy, Lincoln theatre royal - Sister Act (debut lead role), Turkey, Spain, Israel, and many more. Although she managed to maintain work within the music, she missed the freedom of expression she felt from songwriting, so in November 2017, Jessica Aziza began to take shape as an extended version of her and a fully-fledged independent artist working and recording with talented producers around the UK.In 2019, she finally released her debut single titled 'NRG', followed by her latest track 'Runaway,' which was written by herself. On the 13th April I woke up in agonising pain, a pain like I had never felt before. It came in waves and what I would come to find out later was that I was actually experiencing were contractions. Having never been pregnant before or read up about pregnancy this wasn’t something I knew but I definitely understood that these pains were not period pains. I woke my partner up and got some pain killers, opened the window to breathe some fresh air and tried my best to relax. The following morning I woke up feeling weak and like my body was internally battered, I was about to find out it actually was. After a few hours of progressively feeling worse in the morning, I began losing blood, lots of blood. Not the normal amount of blood you lose when on your period. At the point I rang 111 and I was told to immediately head to A&E. I texted my boyfriend who was on a training course and took an uber to the closest hospital. I was seen relatively quickly for a Sunday morning and greeted by a male doctor. I explained all of the above and he asked if I thought I was pregnant, “yes I think so.” He replied “ok, well let's check.” I took the pregnancy test and he came back and in the most matter of fact way you could possibly tell someone he said “you’re pregnant and given everything you’ve told me, you’ve likely had a miscarriage,” There has been a word document that has been sitting in my laptop for eighteen months, that hasn’t been opened since it was created. It is titled ‘my miscarriage story’. I wrote it seven days after I ended up in A&E, having found out in the same breath that I was pregnant and that I was likely having a miscarriage. Seven days in and I actually was in and out of hospital not knowing what was happening. I wrote emotionally, painfully and tragically as I let all my emotions spill out into that word document, it felt like the only way to put words to what I felt. With #babylossawareness week just last week, it felt like it was time to share this story in a little more detail than I have in the past. I wrote a lot about the the grief, the hiding, the identity crisis, the process, the healing but I haven’t actually shared what actually happened. So before I share what I’m about to share, if the idea of reading about this makes you want to stop reading then I invite you to please stop reading and wait for next weeks instalment of Trauma to Triumph
It had been a few days too long that I hadn’t had my period, so there was a part of me that already had an inkling but it wasn’t until the strangest thing happened that I just, well, knew. It was a chilly April evening, I was in my local grocery store doing my food shopping when I suddenly stopped in the middle of the aisle and had the sudden urge to unbuckle, unbutton and then unzip my coat as I lay my hand on the bottom of my belly. I jolted back to earth from
22
wherever my mind had wondered to and realised what I had just done.
“IN T H AT SPLI T SE C OND, I K NE W TH ER E WA S LI F E INSIDE OF M E .”
I thought what a strange thing for me to do because I was still cold and because I undid my coat three times to be able to do that. Why would I go to the trouble if I was just grabbing a few things? I headed home, making the conscious decision not to buy a pregnancy test. We weren’t trying for a baby and we’d only been together for just under a year, what were we going to do? I stalled until I could stall no longer.
“H ADN T PL ANNED F OR A B ABY AND WE ' D ONLY BEEN TOGE TH ER F OR JUST U NDER A YE AR .”
“ TH E H AR D E ST PAR T WA S TH E F EELI NG O F LOSI NG SOM E TH I N G YO U D I D N’ T K NOW YOU H AD AND R E ALISI NG H OW M UCH YOU WAN TED I T WH EN I T WA S GONE .” I broke down crying, I honestly wanted to wail. He stared at me blankly and followed up the news with an inquisitive “Why are you crying?” I could hardly believe he’d actually said those words. I manage to muster a few words “because I’ve never been pregnant and I never imagined it like this.” He made a few phone calls and I was immediately transferred to a different hospital that could treat me, interestingly the hospital I had been born in St Mary's Hospital in Paddington. I walked out of the room dazed, raw and in every kind of pain imaginable, both physical and emotional. Just as I had set foot out of hospital my boyfriend had arrived just in time and that’s when I just crumbled in his arms. I can honestly say that in that moment, I had never experienced pain in that way. It wasn’t just my pain anymore, it was our pain and that made it all the more difficult. We sat in the car for a bit and he cracked a smile, “why are you smiling?” I asked “because you are okay and because we made a baby.”
U E STOR Y # AU T H EN T I C ALE X TELL S H ER STO R Y ABOU T HER MISCAR R IAGE
What I didn’t realise is this ordeal was far from over, this was just the beginning of a ten day emotional rollercoaster that was just about to start. Once I arrived to the second hospital I had to go through A&E all over again and then through to the gynaecology ward. I had my bloods taken and was asked to come back in three days time for another blood test. I was thrown into a whirlwind of terminology I had never come across and spent most of my time whilst waiting, furiously googling to try and make sense of it all. I had been very fortunate that my sister-in-law happened to be a mid-wife and so I knew I had someone close that could guide me through it all. I went back home and was waiting for the phone call. “We have your results and your hCG levels (pregnancy hormones) have gone up.” It meant, I was actually still pregnant. There I was thinking I had had a miscarriage and there was a tiny glimmer of hope that I could still be pregnant, my heart was unexpectedly full. I had not planned for this baby but in that very moment, I wanted nothing more than to have my baby.
“MY HE AR T WA S U N E X PE C TEDLY F U LL , I H ADN T PL ANNED F O R THIS B ABY BU T IN TH AT VER Y M OMEN T , I WAN TED NOTHING MOR E " I went back in a day later to get my bloods done again, yet again the hCG levels went up, another day of hope. At this point we were trying not to get too excited but it was impossible not to think of a happy ending, it was better than the pain of the thought of a loss. It wasn’t until the third sets of blood a few days later that the numbers were still increasing but not in the way they needed to (a healthy pregnancy has the hCG levels double, mine were only increasing by about 20%). At this point I had a scan done and they had found nothing. A few days later I went back into the hospital for the third time and had a second scan done, there it was, stuck in my fallopian tubes, a tiny precious dot on the screen. “I’m afraid it’s an ectopic pregnancy and we’re going to have to discuss what to do next.” I don’t think I felt much when I was told, I didn’t cry but I just felt numb followed up quickly with a dose of worry. I had been given three options, having surgery to remove it (which included removing my damaged tube too, lowering my fertility), taking a drug to flush it out (the same drug that’s used to treat cancer) or waiting for nature to take it’s course. Luckily nature did take its course. The next three months were a blur. I just remember moving from numbness to excruciating pain. The
whole ordeal had taken a huge toll on my body. I slept for days on end and struggled to get out of bed for about three months. I was devoid of life, literally. I struggled to walk for longer than five minutes without feeling like my spine was getting crushed by the heaviness of my body.
MY BO DY H AD GOT TEN R E ADY TO CAR R Y A CH I LD AND NOW I T WA S E M P T Y. I was incredibly lucky that my boyfriend worked in healing and body movement, so I was in the safest and most caring hands, as he lovingly and patiently healed me back to health. Life for a long time felt like death. I was feeling a loss like I had never felt before. I had survived traumas but this felt unsurmountable. Despite having gone through huge adversity throughout my childhood and teenage years, I always knew I’d come out the other side but this, this was incomparable. The grief was heavy and it was long. I would spontaneously start crying in the middle of the day or sob uncontrollably in the middle of the night and those moments at times felt like they’d never end and they haven’t but there are a lot less moments now. Two weeks after it happened, I managed to find some ounce of energy and courage to share what had happened on LinkedIn on video. It felt important to share the experience because I ended up feeling incredibly isolated, lonely and alone in my experience. It was also a way that helped me process what I had been through and turn something difficult into something helpful. I didn’t know any women that had gone through a miscarriage, or so I thought. Once the video went live and 150,000 watched it, I received a tonne of messages from friends, ex-colleagues and strangers around the world sharing their own experiences. What was surprising is I received many messages from men. Men who were still grieving just as much as their wives and girlfriends. Men who were trying to hold it together for their partner. Men who had suffered a loss just as much and yet no one asked how they were. For a moment, I felt less alone in my grief. I joined a FB group run by the miscarriage association and it provided me with a comfort to know I wasn’t the only one going through this traumatic experience.
few months ago. Going through a miscarriage with someone is an incredibly difficult process, it can go one of two ways, you either become a lot closer or you drift apart, for us it ended up being the latter. I found the process of us experiencing the miscarriage differently and grieving differently incredibly hard and it inevitably caused a strain in our relationship. I wanted the other person to feel what I was feeling but that was impossible, men and women grieve in very different ways. We also coped with our grief in very different ways and probably didn't communicate as much as we should have with each other. My boyfriend had suggested I go to therapy to help myself heal from what had happened and it was the best decision ever because it did just that. What neither of us thought about was that as a result I would be the only one that had gotten professional support, processed, healed and as a result changed. We were now two very different people that had grown apart. So why have I decided to share an experience so deeply personal, well because we don’t talk about this and yet there are 250,000 women in the UK experience miscarriages. Women that feel isolated, lonely and alone in their grief. Colleagues, family and friends that don’t understand what it actually feels like let alone what actually happens to someone going through this and the aftermath that is causes. When we talk about these issues that are unfortunately still very stigmatised, we hopefully bring to light to a very human experience.
With love and care,
I Wimmio would like to thank Alex for sharing her heart rending story that affects so many people daily, if you have or are going through this currently we offer our sincere condoloances. Please follow Alex on facebook, linkedin and instagram @ #Authentic Alex.
It’s been exactly eighteen months since I had my miscarriage and the ripple effects of that trauma are still very much felt. I went through a process of completely losing my identity and over the past year and a half trying to put myself back together. Childline counsellor for the NSPCC where I was providing young people and children a safe space to talk. I enjoyed being a source of support for the children who needed it the most. Additionally, I was a Children’s UK advocate for UNICEF, and I am currently a Campaigns Ambassador for Cancer Research. These volunteering experiences helped me to see what the various needs are, and it sparked a fire in me, to discover what I needed to do, to be apart of the change I wish to see. I am a passionate and determined individual, I continuously go out of my way for the benefit of others and I do not stop until I see results, I can work extensively hard under pressure.
