Last month, Windermere held its annual Community Service Day, something we’ve been doing for nearly four decades to help make a positive difference in our communities. It started in 1984 when a group of Windermere agents came together to repair a broken-down fence at a Seattle-area grade school. Thirty-eight years and over 1 million volunteer hours later, we’ve continued this tradition through neighborhoodenhancing projects in communities throughout the Western US where Windermere operates. On the subject of community, on page 12 is a story about the incredible generosity of the Windermere offices in Stanwood and Camano Island, Washington. Each year they raise money to send every third grader in their local school district to free swimming lessons. Stories like theirs remind us that service to others is not something you do, it is who you are. And they are a shining example of that. 2

Is there any street food more beloved than the taco, packing so much flavor into every bit of those tiny tortillas? With roots dating back to pre-Columbian Mexico, you’ll find different tacos in various regions—from Lebanese-influenced al pastor in Mexico City to Japanese-influenced fish tacos in Ensenada—plus pastrami tacos in Los Angeles and brisket tacos in Texas. But they’re not limited to taquerias or trucks. Why not make your own tacos at home with some of your favorite ingredients? You might even create your own signature combos. SPICE UP YOUR FILLINGS The filling is the heart and soul of the taco. Usual suspects might include crumbled chorizo, grilled carne asada, tender stewed beef barbacoa, or slowcooker chicken tinga or carnitas. Top them with chopped onions, cilantro, lime juice, and salsa, from tangy tomatillo to creamy avocado. The sky’s the limit. “Anything can be a taco,” writes chef Gabriela Camara in her cookbook, My Mexico City Kitchen. “There are no rules [except it must] be wrapped in a tortilla and eaten with your hands.” Jalisco-born chef Luna Contreras, owner of the pop-up Chelo in Portland, Oregon, recommends swapping out traditional meat choices for something unusual, like duck instead of pork carnitas, amped up with plum chutney. Veggie lovers, fill your tacos with roasted asparagus and mushrooms. Top them with a chipotle aioli or avocado salsa, and garnish them with toasty sesame seeds and pepitas. Sincere Justice, the chef behind Oakland pop-up Tacos Sincero, blends his Chinese-Vietnamese heritage with his Los Angeles upbringing. His signature tacos include sriracha chicken tinga, roasted sweet potato with salsa verde, and braised beef with black and white pepper, chile oil, and two kinds of Sichuan peppercorns.

TOP IT OFF Toppings offer endless opportunities for personalization. Experiment with fruit, like pomegranate seeds or mango chunks. No taco is complete without a veggie garnish, says Contreras, who likes to pair stir-fried green beans or Chinese greens with duck. For a tangy addition, Justice loves turmeric- or hibiscus-pickled onions. He also adds elements of crunch, from crushed spicy Kashmiri snack mix (you could also try potato chips or Japanese rice crackers) to crispy chickpeas to shredded purple cabbage. If making your own salsa is too time consuming, jazz up your favorite storebought brand with fresh herbs.

SET THE MOOD Mix up large-batch cocktails in pitchers and let your guests serve themselves. Portland bartender Adriana Alvarez recommends adding a little heat to your margaritas by infusing a chile pepper of your choice in tequila for 1–3 days in the fridge. Or play with fruit—fresh strawberry and rhubarb-infused Campari makes a great spritz or Negroni. Craft the perfect playlist ahead of time. “A taco is comfort food,” says Justice. Accordingly, he plays feel-good music, from A Tribe Called Quest to Whitney Houston. Contreras favors a mix of pop-punk, dance, indie, and Mexican music, including Natalia Lafourcade, Julieta Venegas, Jawbreaker, Prince, and Lizzo.

Landscaping: DIY or SOS?
Know what you can handle on your own, and when to call the pros. By Emily Alhadeff A beautiful garden brings joy—and often vegetables, fruits, flowers, birds, butterflies, and pollinators. But preparing a sustainable and attractive landscape can be daunting even for the experienced. Here are some things to keep in mind—and some refresher tips even for the greenest thumbs.

When it comes to yard and garden projects, know your limits, advises Shoshanah Haberman, a landscape designer at Weber Thompson Architects in Seattle. Planting and mulching are manageable, but even “easy” tasks can require extra help when they involve hauling bags of soil, especially if you have any mobility challenges or a tendency to throw out your back. And while you may be able to do it all yourself, consider how much time the project will take, if it will require permits, and if you’ll need a backup plan if your vision goes to pot.
Importantly, plant what you love. You should want to look at it and have an emotional, even a childhood connection to your flowers and plants, says Knoppel. And rest assured that even experienced gardeners make mistakes. “Be ready for some trial and error,” says Haberman. “Start out with a small area of the garden and expand your planting as you gain more knowledge of what is working in your landscape. Gardening is an exercise in lifelong learning.”
According to Eva Knoppel, of Los Angeles-based landscape design firm Garden of Eva, homeowners should always consult with a pro in the design phase. “It is necessary to know the plant’s ultimate size—they look cute in the container but end up overgrowing the house,” she says. Also pay attention to sun or shade requirements.
A landscape designer can help you sort out the scope of the project and help you determine if it’s something you can handle on your own. If you decide to go it alone, nursery staff can advise on plants that will do well in your local conditions. Drought-tolerant plants are a good choice even in the Northwest, where summers can be hot and dry, but vegetation still needs water at first. “If you can, plant in the fall to take full advantage of the winter rains,” says Haberman. “If you must plant in the spring, plant as early as you can. Either way, water everything once a week or so all summer long for a few years until it can get fully established.” Knoppel recommends that gardeners in arid climates install drip irrigation, as most of the water from a nozzle evaporates before it even hits the ground. With summer water restrictions, Southern California residents should consider trees, like olive, and boulders as natural and visually interesting elements that don’t require hydration. WINDERMERE.COM

CLOSET CURATION Turn your wardrobe into your personal boutique with these professional “editing” tips. BY A M A NDA ZU R ITA IRIS MIYASAKI WAS BORN AN ORGANIZER. GROWING UP IN
Hawaii in a Japanese American family, minimalism was part of her life. “In school, my binders were always very organized and color coded,” she says. “People found it amusing, but it was just how I functioned.” Today, she puts that passion for order and organization to use as a professional wardrobe curator and stylist under her Seattle-based brand Wardrobe by Saki (wardrobebysaki.com). Here are her tips for curating a captivating closet and finding ease through editing.

How does editing your closet differ from other decluttering trends? Decluttering is the first step of purging, more of a first run-through to get rid of things you truly don’t need. Editing and curating, however, is where I bring in a styling aspect to organization and understand how my clients are using the pieces in their closets. For example, perhaps a client has a sweatsuit that they wear all the time. In the decluttering phase, they’re not going to get rid of it. But, when it comes to editing, I ask questions like, “Does this outfit make you happy? Do you want to put this on every day?” If no, then we’ll work to find something better.
Oftentimes, once you’ve relived the story of a piece, you’ll realize that the memory is in your heart and not solely attached to an item—so it’s easier to let go of. What goes into making an “Instagram worthy” closet? When you can see all your clothes, shoes, and accessories, you’ll want to use them more. I focus on creating a visual palette for my clients, whether that means organizing by color, silhouette, or types of items. The idea is to create a closet they’ll want to “shop” in. Your closet is your personal store. If you don’t love it, if you wouldn’t shop in that store, you aren’t going to pull things from it. From a technical standpoint, it’s important to be consistent with your storage colors and textures. And you don’t have to fill every single space. In fact, negative space opens up breathing room for your things.
“DOES THIS OUTFIT MAKE YOU HAPPY? DO YOU WANT TO PUT IT ON EVERY DAY?”
What’s your advice for parting with meaningful items that you may not be using frequently? I like to ask my clients: Have you used this within the past year or year and a half ? Fashion trends change, and what you like changes. Your body changes. So, if you haven’t worn something in the past year, maybe it’s time to part. When it comes to sentimental pieces, I find it helps to talk about the memories associated with them.
Aside from the visual aspect, what kind of emotional impact can editing a wardrobe have? You interact with your closet every day, so when you’re able to utilize that space in the most efficient way, it just takes a weight off your shoulders. Rather than combing through clutter, you can have peace of mind knowing, “OK, all my things are right here and I love each one of them.” That kind of foundation helps you to feel at ease going through the rest of the world. A curated closet offers a sense of calm and contentment.

MAKING A SPLASH Windermere’s Stanwood and Camano Island offices help local kids learn to swim.
WHEN DECIDING WHAT CAUSES TO SUPPORT,
the Windermere offices in Stanwood and Camano Island, Washington, took a cue from their surroundings. Given that Stanwood is known for its seven lakes and Camano Island just off the coast, water safety is a critical issue in these scenic towns about an hour and a half north of Seattle. Since 2018, the two offices have been funding the Make a Splash program at the StanwoodCamano YMCA, which gives all third graders in the local school district a week of free swim lessons. “We think swimming is such an important skill for kids to have, especially out here,” says Marla Heagle, a designated broker who owns Windermere Stanwood and Camano Island with her husband, Randy.

They contributed $10,000 in that first year, thanks to more than $2,500 in donations from Windermere agents, which the Heagles then matched. In turn, that total was matched by the Windermere Foundation. This year, they raised the most yet: $12,000. As part of Make a Splash, kids are bused from their elementary school to the YMCA for a week to learn swimming strokes. They also go over water safety techniques, understanding their limits around water, and practicing what to do in emergency situations. For many students, their families don’t have the resources for swim lessons, so it’s their first time in a pool. In addition to sponsoring the Make a Splash program, Windermere Stanwood and Camano Island work with the school district to identify families in need during the holidays, then shop
for gifts for all household members. They’re also the title sponsor for the Windermere StanwoodCamano Soap Box Derby, an annual family-friendly celebration that’s the largest soap box derby race west of the Mississippi. Having the opportunity to support the community in such a tangible way is one of the things Heagle loves about Windermere. “The buyers and sellers all want to do good, and having the Windermere Foundation makes it easy,” she says. “It makes me very proud, and it makes it easier to talk to our clients about what we’re doing in the community. Among iPhones, the Pro Max is your best bet for sharp nighttime photos, but the more wallet-friendly SE delivers impressive results. Among Android phones, Samsung Galaxy and Google Pixel are the industry leaders. Stabilize your camera. Many phone cases come with basic pop-out stands, but you’ll also find bean bags, monopods, and tripods designed expressly for phone cameras. Get to know your settings. While it’s impossible to predict exactly when this glow will occur, it can happen anywhere along the Pacific Coast. You’re most likely to see this a couple of hours after sunset, on warm nights, and coinciding with a new moon. A few companies feature evening kayak tours geared specifically toward viewing bioluminescence. In Washington’s scenic San Juan Islands, both Sea Quest Expeditions (sea-quest-kayak.com) and Discovery Sea Kayaks (discoveryseakayak.com) offer bioluminescence paddles, typically on the darkest evenings from spring through summer. And around Point Reyes National Seashore, up the coast from San Francisco, Blue Waters Kayaking (bluewaterskayaking.com) offers bioluminescence excursions on the calm waters of Tomales Bay.

THERE MAY NOT BE A MORE EYE-POPPING EXPERIENCE than the bright orange glow produced by an active lava flow. Hawaii Volcanoes National Park (nps.gov/ havo), on Hawaii Island (a.k.a. the Big Island), is one of the world’s best places to observe lava flowing in an active volcano. From the park’s central Kilauea section, you can often see plumes of yellow- and orange-illuminated steam rising from Halemaumau Crater at all hours of the night. The park and several tour companies also offer guided evening lava-viewing treks, and while available only during the day, a helicopter tour is another memorable way to view lava.
