“ We give thanks to You, O God, we give thanks! For Your wondrous works declare that Your name is near.”–The Bible, Psalm 75:1

the thousands because of intense persecution, Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki called for the creation of an operations committee to protect religious rights and minorities. Give thanks to the Lord for this and ask Him to make it a very successful policy. Pray for the salvation of Prime Minister al-Maliki and for the protection of Iraqi Christians.

MYANMAR A report from a missionary working in Myanmar reminds that “transformation and development is not about a project or program but a sincere investment of compassion in the lives of people.” He goes on to describe a home for orphans run by a Christian organization. After being rescued from the aftermath of Cyclone Nargis, they are still “living in a pig pen.” But thanks to the Spirit-led efforts of God’s people, “The orphans now have two beautiful homes, a place of refuge and of sustainable personal growth.” Praise the Lord for His work in this nation and among those most in need. Thank Him for setting the fatherless in families (The Bible, Psalm 68:5, 6).

giving up, the missionary and his wife pressed on, obeying the call of Christ to “go and make disciples.” In year twenty-three, the fruit began to come. Today, they are training hundreds of Muslim-background families, have a church ministry, and have started a Bible correspondence school. They also work in slums equipping women and girls with vocational skills. Give thanks to God for their perseverance and praise Him for His faithfulness. If we will not grow weary or lose heart, He will bring fruit in due season (The Bible, Galatians 6:9). Pray for all the laborers in the 10/40 Window harvest field to continue diligently sowing the Gospel.

The Lord’s name is very near, as the following praise reports testify.

India An indigenous missionary in India spent twenty-two years proclaiming the Gospel without a single convert! “Can you imagine the valleys of doubt and disappointment during that time?” Smyrna Ministries asks. Instead of 4 | The 10/40 Window Reporter

Bhutan Even as the government of Bhutan considers an anti-conversion law that would prosecute anyone attempting to proselytize, the government also “seems ready to grant official recognition and accompanying rights to a miniscule Christian population that has remained largely underground.” Although the constitution says Buddhism is the official religion, “it also says that his majesty [the king] is the protector of all religions.” Praise the Lord for the work He is doing in Bhutan. Ask Him to continue to build His Church and give His people favor with the government. Pray for a great harvest of souls in Bhutan. Sources: AKnews, GHNI, Smyrna Ministries

“ Imagine if the hearts of Christians around the world were recaptured by the self-giving example of Christ’s love being poured out for us on the cross. What might that kind of radical Christian giving look like…?” —Stephen Grabill, Kingdom Stewardship

Imagine laying your time, talents, hopes, dreams, and finances at the feet of Jesus. Then imagine leaving them there – where they belong. Imagine what that would look like in practical terms. It would certainly look very different from the “gimme-gimme” attitude practiced by much of the world and would stand out dramatically from the selfishness and greed that drives most people. Radical Christian living and giving would cause many people – even some Christians – to stop and stare. If we dare to take up that challenge, the world will see the love of Christ illustrated through us. What an opportunity! And what an honor: to follow the example of our Lord and Savior by pouring ourselves out for His glory. Instead of simply imagining what radical Christian giving might look like, why don’t we try it and find out. Let’s start today – right now – by surrendering everything to the Lord. And let’s ask Him what He wants us to do with the resources He has entrusted to us. Invite Him to show you the role He wants you to play in reaching the people of the 10/40 Window with the Gospel. Go to www.WIN1040.com to explore ways to pray and give toward the advance of the Kingdom of God in the “final frontier of missions.”

“The commission and call of every Christian is to be fully awake as prophetic watchmen in this hour.” —Mahesh and Bonnie Chavada

When Tunisian street vendor, Mohamed Bouazizi set himself on fire on December 17, 2010 to protest his mistreatment by police, he couldn’t have known the effect it would have on the Arab world. His act of self-immolation set off a storm of unrest that swept across North Africa and the Middle East. Street demonstrations have since erupted in Morocco, Algeria, Libya, Egypt, Yemen, Jordan, Iraq, Iran, Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, and Yemen. Entire governments have been toppled and others are in danger of falling. What began as an individual act of protest grew into a multinational revolution. In a matter of weeks the Arab World was turned upside down. But the radical changes that recently occurred and are still occurring in

that region have actually been a long time in the making. A longstanding combination of political, economic, religious, and spiritual conflict finally reached critical mass and…. boom! An international explosion. The world stands amazed. Many in the nations where demonstrations are taking place are frightened by the violence and worried about their uncertain future. Even some Christians are living in fear. Brothers and Sisters in and out of the 10/40 Window have expressed grave concerns about what is taking place. Some believe Islam is taking over. But what if these events can and are being used to advance the Kingdom of God? What if instead of a great tragedy or threat, we are seeing a door open for the Gospel to be preached in some of the leastreached regions on planet earth? A key element in our response to the revolution in the Arab world is our concept of God. If we consider Him to be small and limited in power, incapable of dealing with what is freedom. (The Bible, Daniel 2:21) the powers of darkness seeking to rush into this leadership void like a flood to be thrown into confusion and kept from taking control. Pray for the Holy Spirit to lift up a standard against them. (The Bible, Isaiah 59:19; Psalm 35:4) the Lord to capture the hearts of the youth who are so discontented. Pray for them to realize they cannot find satisfaction in anything or anyone but Jesus Christ. (The Bible, John 14:6) Christians in the nations in turmoil to be strong and courageous. Pray for the Lord to surround them with His

happening in North Africa and the Middle East, then we have good reason to be afraid. However, if we take God at his Word, believing Him to be sovereign, all-powerful, and able to accomplish His will in any and every circumstance, then we have cause for celebration. His greatness gives us a reason to praise Him. And it provides us with a reason to pray. Prayer served as a chief catalyst to the Arab world revolution. For decades, intercessors have been focusing their attention on the 10/40 Window. And we are now seeing the results. History is being made. And those who have labored in prayer have become history-makers. What does the future hold? Only God knows. We live in uncertain times. What we do know is that the Lord loves the people of the Arab world and is waiting to welcome them into His Kingdom. It is to that end that we must pray. Sources: NPR, Charisma angels and empower them to share their faith with boldness. (The Bible, Joshua 1:7; Psalm 91:11; Ephesians 6:19) Christians around the world to realize this as a time to intercede on behalf of the Arab world and the 10/40 Window. Pray for them to devote themselves to prayer, standing in the gap fervently and faithfully. (The Bible, I Chronicles 12:32; Colossians 4:2; Ezekiel 22:30) a great harvest of souls to result from the unrest, with multitudes of men, women, and children putting their faith in Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord. FIELD “The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon Me, because the LORD has anointed Me to preach good tidings to the poor; He has sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to those who are bound.” (The Bible, Isaiah 61:1)

What impact do your prayers and donations have on the 10/40 Window? The following account from one of our many contacts inside this region provides a powerful glimpse.

I was in a very remote place inside our [nation] meeting people who have accepted the Lord but there is no pastor who is learned. Just as Paul was with such people for weeks, I was also there for a week or so teaching, admonishing, praying and fellowshipping. Unfortunately, there is no electricity there, no mobile works, no road. [They are] totally isolated but God was with us.

A lady who was suffering from cancer of [the] throat, who couldn’t eat, couldn’t sleep, couldn’t talk, needed prayer. [After we prayed] her cancer shrunk and she started eating, drinking and talking. Praise God! There was one brother who had ulcers all over his body and could not get treatment because of the long distance to the hospital – and God delivered him as well! Please faithfully uplift me….

Ask the Lord to raise up men and women who will serve with integrity, righteousness, and justice. Pray for an end to corruption and graft. PULLING DOWN STRONGHOLDS

“For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds….” (The Bible, II Corinthians 10:4)

Saudi Arabia is principally known for two things: Islam and oil. While they might seem to have nothing in common, the false religion and the natural resource so abundant in this region are intricately intertwined. Islam was founded in Saudi Arabia in A.D. 610 when a man by the name of Muhammad had a visitation from an “angel.” According to the story, the being tried to strangle Muhammad and ordered him to “recite.” This took place in Mecca, now the capital of the Islamic world, and led to the creation of the Qur’an (“recitation”). Fourteen hundred years later, Saudi Arabia continues to be the headquarters and stronghold of Islam. Saudis believe they are “keepers of the faith” and have been instrumental in helping it spread around the globe. This is where oil comes in.

In the 1930s, oil was discovered in Saudi Arabia. Vast amounts. It is estimated that this nation possesses 24% of the world’s oil reserves. Almost 50% of Saudi Arabia’s GNP and 90% of its exports involve petroleum. The government has used this precious commodity to promote Islam. Saudi Arabia has funded mosques and schools all around the world. Sources: Christian Science Monitor, Cindy Trimm (“Rules of Engagement,” 2008)

Day 1 INDIA, SOUTH ASIA

Christians in India have seen a rise in persecution in the last ten years, according to Compass Direct. More than 130 assaults were reported each year since 2001, “with figures far surpassing that in 2007 and 2008.” The Evangelical Fellowship of India reports that in 2010, there were 149 acts of violence against Christians. Over a third of those (56) took place in Karnataka state. Pray for the Lord to strengthen and encourage Christian Believers in India. Ask Him to enable them to stand firm against threats and intimidation, as well as violence. Pray for the salvation of those who are mistreating them – especially Hindu extremists. Invite the Lord to pour out His Spirit on India and cause the harvest of souls already underway to grow and accelerate. Pray for His Kingdom to come in this nation. (The Bible, Matthew 6:10)

MAURITANIA, NORTH AFRICA

The government of Mauritania is “stepping up attacks against alQaida-affiliated terrorists across the border in Mali.” Officials say al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) has bases in Mali and attacking those bases is the best 16 | The 10/40 Window Reporter

way to ensure the national security of Mauritania. Pray for these bases to be discovered, exposed, and destroyed. Pray for efforts by AQIM to recruit and raise funds to fail completely. Ask the Lord to draw key members of this terrorist group into relationship with Jesus Christ. Pray for the people of Mauritania to have the opportunity to hear and respond to the Gospel. Pray for multitudes to put their faith in Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord. (The Bible, Romans 10:14)

Day 2 SUDAN, NORTH AFRICA

Although the referendum vote has made it possible for South Sudan to secede from the North, there are many issues that still need to be addressed – such as adequate water, education, and medical care. Pray for the Lord to supply the needs of the people of South Sudan. Ask Him to protect Christians during this time of transition, unite them in prayer, and grow the Church in Sudan. Invite the Prince of Peace to rule and reign in Sudan as North and South prepare to separate. Pray for the hearts of Muslims to be softened and for them to hear and respond to the Gospel. Ask the Lord for a great harvest of souls in Sudan as His Kingdom comes to this nation. (The Bible, Matthew 13:23) www.WIN1040.com

AFGHANISTAN, SOUTH ASIA

Kandahar has seen a rise in suicide bombings in 2011 with three in just 10 days in February. The Taliban claimed responsibility. “While NATO says it has been making major gains in the southern provinces of Kandahar and Helmand, the Taliban heartland,” writes the LA Times, “insurgents have still been able to strike back with attacks….” Pray for an end to the Taliban’s influence and power in Afghanistan. Ask the Lord to root them out of this region. Pray for the safety of the common people, as well as the NATO troops attempting to liberate them from this oppression. Pray for the Lord to rid the government of corruption. Ask Him to pour His Spirit out on Afghanistan, bringing salvation and healing to every people group. Pray for the Kingdom of God to come in power to this nation. (The Bible, II Chronicles 19:7)

Day 3 KUWAIT, ARABIAN PENINSULA

The Interior Minister of Kuwait resigned in February 2011 as the unrest spreading across North Africa began to make its way up the Arabian Peninsula. As one news source reported, “Opposition groups have sharply escalated pressure on Kuwait’s leadership over claims

of corruption” and there has been “increasing disquiet in the Gulf inspired by uprisings in Egypt and elsewhere in the Arab world.” Pray for leaders in Kuwait to respond to the concerns of their people. Ask the Lord to maintain peace and accomplish His purposes in this nation, setting Muslims free from bondage to false religion. Pray for this crisis to be an opportunity for the Gospel to be made known throughout Kuwait and the rest of the Arabian Peninsula. Plead for a tremendous harvest of souls. (The Bible, Matthew 24:14)

BANGLADESH, SOUTH ASIA

A nation-wide strike by the main opposition party “shut down” the nation of Bangladesh in February 2011. “Scores of protesters were injured,” one source reported, as demonstrators clashed with police. The strike was held to pressure the government into holding early elections. Pray for the Lord to restore stability and bring peace in this situation. Ask Him to speak to the hearts of leaders and opposition members, revealing to them diplomatic ways to solve their differences. Pray for this unrest to be used as a means of exalting Jesus Christ in Bangladesh. Pray for the Gospel to be preached and for those who are bound by false religions to be set free. Pray for the Kingdom of God to come to Bangladesh in great power and glory. (The Bible, Isaiah 42:1-7)

GUINEA-BISSAU, WEST AFRICA

Guinea-Bissau was removed from the world list of electoral democracies in 2010 because of “declines” in fundamental freedoms and civil liberties. Pray for the government of this nation. Pray for the salvation of the leaders. Ask the Lord to root out corruption and manipulation. Pray for basic human rights and civil liberties to be restored. Petition the Lord to make the Gospel available throughout this nation and for the hearts of the people to be receptive to the Good News of Jesus Christ. Ask for a great harvest of souls in Guinea-Bissau. (The Bible, I Timothy 2:1-4)

Ask the Lord to use these natural disasters to turn the minds and hearts of the Japanese people to eternal things. Pray for this to become an opportunity for the Gospel to be preached and demonstrated throughout this nation. Petition the Lord to provide for the Japanese people through Christian humanitarian agencies. Pray for many in Japan to put their faith in Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord. (The Bible, II Corinthians 1:3,4)

In February 2011, six members of a non-governmental organization were kidnapped by “heavily armed gunmen in combat uniform.” No group has claimed responsibility,

but authorities believe this crime was committed by a militant group. Pray for the safety of these hostages. Petition the Lord to bring an end to the group who carried out the kidnappings. Pray for their salvation. Ask the Lord to move powerfully, pouring out His Holy Spirit upon this nation. Pray for those being led astray by Buddhism to hear and respond to the Truth of Jesus Christ. Petition the Lord to bring forth a great harvest of souls in Bhutan. (The Bible, John 1:17)

SAUDI ARABIA, ARABIAN PENINSULA

The nation of Saudi Arabia is concerned about the spread of weapons of mass destruction (WMD) in the Middle East. The government is especially worried about Iran’s development of nuclear weapons and the possibility that terrorists could obtain and use WMD. “Terrorism is an international phenomenon,” the Foreign Ministry stated. “It has no religion or nationality.” Pray for the government to be consistent and relentless in their efforts to combat terrorism and nuclear war. Ask the Lord to use the uncertainty over Iran and extremist groups to cause people to turn to Jesus Christ for hope and security. Pray for the door to the hearts and minds of Muslims to be open to the Gospel. Plead for their souls and ask the Lord for a great harvest. (The Bible, Colossians 1:13)

of piracy, drug smuggling, and political uncertainty.” Analysts say the government is ill-equipped to counter these threats. Pray for the Lord to give leaders in this nation wisdom and strategies to deal with these problems. Pray for the hearts of those involved in piracy and drug smuggling to be soft and receptive to the Gospel. Petition the Lord to raise up leaders of integrity who fear Him and will give Him glory. Ask Him to pour out His Holy Spirit on Guinea and bring forth a tremendous harvest of souls. Pray for the Kingdom of God to come to this nation, setting the captives free and igniting a spiritual revival in West Africa. (The Bible, Daniel 2:21)

THAILAND, SOUTHEAST ASIA

In January 2011, 50 girls (all minors) were rescued from a factory in Thailand. Is it possible to hold a mini-Global Day of Prayer every day of the year? Dr. Victor Choudhrie, a church planting leader in India, thinks so. Which is why he has issued a summons to the Body of Christ to pray in harmony each morning and has even provided an outline to help make it happen. 3@6 invites Believers the world over to spend 3 minutes praying for global evangelism at 6 a.m. every morning. Choudhrie’s suggestions for utilizing this time include the following:

1st minute Pray for the harvest. Ask the Lord to reach the unreached, seek and save the

lost, and for the Gospel to be preached in every nation, among every tribe, tongue, and people. Pray for the Lord of the Harvest to send workers into His harvest field.

2nd minute Pray for the fields. Ask the Lord to open doors to closed nations, open hearts

and minds, and remove the veil from the eyes of those in bondage to Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism, and ethnic religions. Pray for tentmakers, undercover missionaries, and members of the underground Church to be protected and encouraged, to have opportunities to share the Good News, and for their efforts to bring forth abundant fruit.

3rd minute Listen. Ask the Lord to reveal His strategies and plans to pray for and evangelize the

10/40 Window. Allow Him to place a specific nation or people group on your heart. Ask Him to show you how to intercede on their behalf and to help you adopt a “watch and pray” attitude that will keep you open to His guidance throughout the day.

It’s an incredibly simple, yet potentially powerful way to finish the task (The Bible, Matthew 24:14; 28:18-20; Revelation 5:9). The question is: Can we spare 180 seconds of our day to see God’s most passionate desire fulfilled?

JORDAN, MIDDLE EAST

Government leaders, judges, members of security forces, and representatives from non-governmental organizations gathered in Jordan in February 2011 to discuss ways to curb human trafficking in their nation. Egypt Dangerous Development or Opportunity

For nearly 20 years, networks of intercessors have been targeting North Africa, the Middle East, and the rest of the 10/40 Window with fervent, unceasing prayer. 32 | The 10/40 Window Reporter

A

fire is burning in the 10/40 Window. The spark of unrest that swept across North Africa in early 2011 caught fire in Egypt and became an inferno. Protesters filled the streets of Cairo demanding a new government, an end to corruption, and greater freedoms. Despite his initial resistance, President Hosni Mubarak was finally forced to step down. This did not completely satisfy demonstrators, however. Weeks after Mubarak’s resignation, there continued to be reports of dissent and even acts of violence. A power struggle is currently underway to see who will govern the nation. Some are calling the events in Egypt a success story. It is being referred to as a revolution. Many in Egypt believe greater freedom will indeed be the result. Women in this nation have expressed relief as well as the expectation that they will no longer

be forced to endure sexual and social harassment and oppression. They are calling it a “new dawn.” The revolt in Egypt has motivated similar waves of public dissent in Djibouti, Kuwait, Yemen, Iran, Iraq, Syria, and other Middle East nations. What is taking place in Egypt and throughout the surrounding April 2011

region is unique to our times. The overthrow of governments by common people has never happened before on such a grand scale. The question people are asking is: Why? Why is this happening? The answer has at least two parts: First, because of God’s faithfulness. His people have been praying. For nearly 20 years, networks of intercessors have been targeting North Africa, the Middle East, and the rest of the 10/40 Window with fervent, unceasing prayer. They have been pleading with God for the souls of the precious people in Egypt and 67 other nations. We are now witnessing a move of the Lord in answer to the cries of His children. The second reason for the protests and revolts has to do with God’s love. He loves the people of Egypt, Tunisia, Algeria, Iraq, and the other nations of the 10/40 Window and desires to set them free from sin

and false religions. He is zealous about this, not willing that any should die, but that all of them should come to repentance. Is the revolution in the Arab world a dangerous development or an opportunity? Is it evidence that satan is at work in that part of the world, stirring up trouble? Or is it the hand of God stirring hearts?

© 2011 Window International Network www.WIN1040.com

Probably both. Which is why we need to keep praying, crying out to the Lord on behalf of Egypt and the surrounding nations. This could be a time of violence and unrest that creates a leadership void and allows the enemy to come in like a flood. Or it could be a time in which the Holy Spirit opens blind eyes and leads multitudes into relationship with Jesus Christ. This could be an unprecedented advance of the Kingdom of God in the 10/40 Window. Sources: CNN, LA Times, NY Times

Pray for

the revolution in Egypt to be an open door for the Gospel. Pray for the light of Christ to shine brightly into this nation. (The Bible, II Corinthians 4:6) those who are dissatisfied with the government and the way the nation is being run to seek and find their satisfaction in Jesus Christ. (The Bible, Matthew 7:8) Christians to be bold in sharing their faith. Pray for the Lord to give them opportunities to preach and demonstrate the love of God. (The Bible, Proverbs 28:1; Romans 5:8) the Lord to arise and scatter the forces of evil attempting to take control in Egypt. Pray for the Lord to raise up leaders who will rule with integrity. (The Bible, Psalm 68:1; Daniel 2:21) Muslims to be set free from the lies and oppression of Islam. Ask the Lord to reveal Himself to them in dreams and visions. (The Bible, Isaiah 61:1; Acts 2:17) a tremendous harvest of souls as God’s Kingdom comes to Egypt. (The Bible, John 4:35; I Corinthians 4:20)

PRAYER JOURNEY Preparation One of the most common questions about prayer journeys is, “What will I be doing?”

T

o some, this might seem obvious. You’ll be praying, right? Thus the first word in the name of this type of trip. But it isn’t quite that simple. Yes, you’ll be praying. But how, when, and where? No matter how meticulously planned your trip is, the how, when, and where could very well change once you enter the 10/40 Window. That’s one of the keys to a successful prayer journey: flexibility – following the leading of the Holy Spirit. In some nations of the 10/40 Window, Christians can pray openly. If you visit one of these “open” countries, you’ll probably hook up with local Believers and may march the city streets, praying as you go. You might stop in 34 | The 10/40 Window Reporter

at an orphanage or a hospital and have the opportunity to pray for the sick, hurting, and oppressed. Many places in the 10/40 Window, however, are “closed.” You’ll have to pray in ways that don’t draw attention: quietly while walking through the airport, silently as you ride the bus, under your breath in the marketplace… If you’re ready for an exciting, unpredictable adventure with God, consider a prayer journey in the 10/40 Window. It will not only stretch you, but will advance the Kingdom in the “resistance belt” in significant yet often unseen ways – ways that you will only fully understand and appreciate when you reach heaven. www.WIN1040.com

Part I

The starting place is prayer. Begin praying now. Before you go. Ask the Lord if He wants you on a prayer journey. And if He says yes, then it’s time to turn up the intensity level on your relationship with Him. A successful prayer journey hinges on your own personal intimacy with God. If you’re acquainted with Jesus Christ (maybe He’s your Savior, but not quite your Lord) you’ll need to either draw closer or forget about entering the 10/40 Window. The spiritual atmosphere inside the Window can be very intense. The warfare is real and often much more fierce than what we experience in our everyday lives back home. The enemy, the Bible reminds us, is like a lion just looking for someone to devour (The Bible,

ns I Peter 5:8). An unprepared, unaware prayer journeyer who hasn’t pressed in to God can be an easy target. That shouldn’t scare you away. Instead, it should motivate you to seek the Lord. Being close to Him is where we always want to be, whether we’re in our own kitchen or standing in the streets of Karachi.

Start today:

4 Read, study, memorize, meditate on, and dig into God’s Word. It strengthens our faith and is an indispensible weapon in the battle (The Bible, Romans 10:17; Ephesians 6:17). 4 Pray. Pray more often. Keep praying. Make April 2011

conversing with your Lord an ongoing, 24/7 lifestyle rather than a once a day special event. God is always with you, always listening, always ready and willing to talk. He has made some amazing promises regarding prayer and intercession (The Bible, John 14:14; I John 5:14;15; Matthew 7:7,8…). Take Him up on them. 4 Spend time with other believers. You’ll need team members for your journey, as well as prayer covering. Jumpstart your relationship with fellow journeyers by meeting to pray before heading into the Window. Be creative in working around busy schedules and distance challenges (try texting, phone calls, skype, etc.). And begin recruiting

a home team who will faithfully pray a protective hedge around you and the rest of the journeyers while you are in the 10/40 Window. If you are involved in habitual sin, get free now. (You want that even if you never go on a prayer journey!) Repent. Humble yourself before the Lord. Be still before Him. Worship. As you develop a deeper relationship with the Lord, He will prepare you for the journey. Sourced: Praying Through the Window IV: Practical Manual for Prayer Journeyers and Home Based Intercessors

Nepal

Source for Human Trafficking

The mention of this nation often brings to mind a remote, sparsely populated land hidden from the rest of Asia by the mighty Himalayas – rugged, snow-capped mountains that include the world’s tallest, Mt. Everest. While this is an accurate description of Nepal, what many people don’t know is that Nepal has become a source country for human trafficking. It is estimated that between 10,000 and 15,000 Nepali girls and women are trafficked into India each year for the purpose of sexual exploitation and involuntary servitude. Another 7,000 are trafficked to South East Asia for the same purposes. That accounts for about .14% of the females in Nepal. Another 7,500 children (mostly girls) are trafficked domestically for sexual exploitation. Some of the victims of this criminal activity are tricked into traveling by the promises of a job. Others are kidnapped. But it is also common for parents or relatives to sell their children and young girls into the sex industry. Financial need plays a major role in these transactions with approximately 25% of the population living below the poverty line. 36 | The 10/40 Window Reporter

April 2011

In 1997, more than 200,000 Nepalese girls were involved in the Indian sex trade. The number in 2011 is believed to be much higher. “The girls are bought for as little as $20 and later sold or re-sold to Indian sex market agents for up to $600. The price the girl commands is based on her beauty, physique and the demand for her type of service… All of the trafficked Nepalese women and girls aged between 1429 are put in debt bondage and often have to service between 15-25 customers daily. They often have to work between 14-18 hours a day offering commercial sex for which they get paid nothing.” Another factor in the selling and trafficking of girls and women in Nepal is the deukis system. Deukis means “girl offered to god.” This practice began in the 17th century when King Nagi Malla of Doti (western Nepal) was convinced by the local priests that if he gave his daughter to the temple, the gods would look favorably on his kingdom and their problems (natural disasters and disease) would be solved. When it appeared to work, a new tradition was started.

Pray for the government of Nepal to realize how serious this problem is and begin taking steps to combat it. Pray for the Lord to move leaders to take up the cause of the oppressed and defenseless. (The Bible, Psalm 9:9) an end to the demonic practice of deukis. Ask the Lord to reveal Himself to those in poverty as Jehovah Jireh – the-LORD-will-provide. (The Bible, Genesis 22:14) the hearts of those who create a demand for prostitutes. Pray for them to be convicted by the Holy Spirit, to repent and put their faith in Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord. (The Bible, Acts 3:19) the Lord to deliver victims from slavery and prostitution. Ask the Lord to heal their minds, bodies, and souls. (The Bible, Psalm 147:3) God’s Kingdom to come, bringing transformation to Nepal. (The Bible, Matthew 6:10)

Today, parents continue to give their girls to the temple in hopes of pleasing the gods. They also sell them to rich families. “In a tragic twist, it is not an uncommon practice in western Nepal for feudal families to buy girls from poor families….” As another source notes, “After initiating them into the household through the temple rites they are taken as mistresses…. All of the trafficked Later on, as the girl gets to be over 30 years and Nepalese women and grows older, she is forced into prostitution.”

girls aged between 14-29 are put in Although the problem of human trafficking has debt bondage and been well documented in Nepal, it continues often have to service to go on. And it will keep going on unless the between 15-25 borders are secured and the trafficking rings customers daily. shut down. China Hymie: Hello Friends! For the

past two months, we have been learning about the festivals and customs of China. This month, Tai-Yu is back again with his friend, Xuilan. Xuilan is going to tell us the story of her past and how she came to know the Lord. Tai-Yu: Ni Hao, WindowKids! I am so happy to introduce you to one of my closest friends, Xuilan. She has an incredible story of how God protected her family and brought her to my church.

If you have faith the size of a mustard seed, nothing will be impossible for you.

38 | The 10/40 Window Reporter

www.WIN1040.com

Xuilan: Ni Hao, WindowKids! My story

starts with a simple seed. When I was young, my grandfather took me into town to buy supplies for our family farm. When we were there, an old friend ran up to him. The man was crying, dancing, and shouting, claiming that God had healed him. You see, Friends, this man had been born deaf. So when we saw him, we were very surprised that he could hear. My Grandfather asked him, “What do you mean ‘God’ healed you? What ‘God’?” “Jesus Christ!” the man replied. He then told us his story. “Someone came up and asked me if I knew Jesus Christ. I told him I did not know any Jesus. The man explained to me that Jesus Christ is God and has the power to heal. He asked me if he could pray for my ears to be healed. I said, ‘Yes! Of course!’ But I also told him that I had been prayed for many times before and the gods had never healed me. The man reached into his pocket and pulled out a tiny seed. It was a mustard seed. He said that if I had faith as big as that little seed, Jesus could heal me. He prayed for me and Jesus Christ healed my body!!! I can hear everything now!“ My grandfather was shocked. He had never heard of this God, Jesus Christ, but he could not deny that his friend had been healed.

My grandfather wanted to know more. His friend told him the man who prayed for him gave him a book. It was called “The Bible.” He also gave him a bag of mustard seeds to share with others when their faith seemed small. Grandfather invited his friend to join us for dinner so he could tell the rest of my family what had happened.

Kai–lan Candied Fruit Ingredients: • 16 large red grapes [globe grapes] • 12 large strawberries, stems removed • 2 cups sugar • 1/2 cup water • Red food coloring • 1 Tablespoon sesame seeds [optional] You’ll also need: • 8 wooden chopsticks or wooden skewers • Wooden spoon Servings: 8; Prep Time: 40 min.; Cook Time: 7 min. Step 1: Line two cookie sheets with foil; set aside. Slide four grapes or three strawberries onto a wooden chopstick, making sure to cover one end with the fruit. Step 2: Combine the sugar and water in a medium heavy-bottomed saucepan. Stir with a wooden spoon. Bring to a boil over medium heat, stop stirring and continue boiling until a candy thermometer reaches 250°F or a drop of the sugar mixture into a bowl of ice water become hard, about 7 minutes. Step 3: Remove from the heat and stir in a few drops of red food coloring. Carefully dip the skewered fruit into the sugar to cover completely. Transfer dipped skewers to the prepared cookie sheets. Sprinkle with sesame seeds if desired. Repeat with the remaining fruit. Allow candies to cool completely before serving. Step 4: Insert each stick end into a container to serve. Enjoy!

April 2011

Friends, that night our entire family decided to accept Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior. And ever since then, we have served Jesus. It has not always been easy. We ended up losing our farm and everything we owned. About the only thing we had left was the bag of mustard seeds. They reminded us of a story in Matthew 17 where Jesus says those with faith the size of a mustard seed can move mountains. So we believed God and we moved to the city where we found other Christians. That is how I met Tai-Yu. At times, it may seem that hope is gone, especially when we cannot see where God is taking us. Friends, hold on to God’s promises. Even if our faith is as small as a seed, we can move mountains. Nothing is too big for our GOD!!

Hymie: WindowKids, isn’t Xuilan’s story encouraging? We may not all face the same troubles but God is still God. He never changes. He is always the same. We just need faith the size of a mustard seed to move the “mountains” in our lives. These “mountains” might be related to school, friends, money, food, or home. But it does not matter what kind of mountain it is, it must move when we have Jesus on our side! Let’s pray for all of our brothers and sisters in China and throughout the 10/40 Window who are struggling with “mountains”! I’d love to hear how your prayer groups are going. You can write and tell me at myhymnie@windowkids.com.
