He says his goal for each project is to create an appealing and functional space b a s e d o n t h e c l i e n t ’s v i s i o n , t a s t e a n d l i f e s t y l e . M i c k l e y, w h o i s a g r a d u a t e o f t h e A r t I n s t i t u t e of Pittsburgh, has worked on many Windsor projects over the years. “I’ve worked on many homes, the tennis facility and three of the Windsor suites,” h e s a y s . “ I a l s o d e s i g n e d t h e We s t o n G u e s t House. It was great to work directly with Mrs. We s t o n o n t h i s p r o j e c t . ” Mickley says each design project is a unique statement that respects not only the owner but also the architectural integrity of the space. “ W i n d s o r ’s a r c h i t e c t u r e , ” M i c k l e y s a y s , “ m a y f o r c e y o u t o d o something you’re not accustomed to doing, which takes you out of the box. Windsor brought a different way of thinking about design, a s w e l l a s a r c h i t e c t u r e , t h a n w h a t w e w e r e u s e d t o i n Ve r o B e a c h . It was a fresh approach and you had to do your homework.” We s p o k e w i t h M i c k l e y r e c e n t l y a b o u t h i s w o r k a t W i n d s o r : Question: How did you know you wanted to be involved with Windsor? Answer: I knew – and everyone knew – that Windsor was going to be something you wanted to be involved in. Windsor paved the way for a new type of design and a r c h i t e c t u r e i n t h e Ve r o Beach area. The Windsor look was very simple, with white cotton slipcovers and sisal rugs. More attention was paid to the architecture and design details than to fabrics, prints and patterns. It was a more sophisticated look.
Q: Designers draw inspiration from many sources. What inspires you? A: Architecture and interior design can complement each other when they are done well. I’m inspired by classic architecture with properly proportioned rooms. I’m also inspired by African artifacts and furniture. I just think i t ’s s o r a w a n d c r e a t i v e . M o s t o f i t w a s m a d e b y u n t r a i n e d a r t i s t s a n d t h e r e i s s o m e t h i n g v e r y h o n e s t a b o u t i t . I t ’s f u n t o u s e i n moderation. A lot of contemporary furniture designers have drawn inspiration from African motifs and design. I’m also inspired by interesting antiques that have a lot of character and by great artwork. Art is as important as the sofa or the coffee table. Good art is something people collect. I encourage people to buy their own art so it means something to them.
Q: How is Windsor different from other communities?
Q: What are you working on right now?
A: I think Windsor definitely is different because of the a r c h i t e c t u r e a s w e l l a s t h e o u t d o o r s p a c e s . I n t h e Ve r o B e a c h area, we were used to a backyard that backed up to a golf course o r r i v e r. I n W i n d s o r, y o u r v i e w i s o f t e n y o u r o w n b a c k y a r d , w h i c h is a courtyard.
A : We j u s t c o m p l e t e d a l a r g e h i s t o r i c h o u s e i n P o t o m a c , M a r y l a n d . We r e c e n t l y f i n i s h e d a g o l f c l u b f a c i l i t y i n S t u a r t , F l o r i d a , t w o o f t h e c o t t a g e s i n t h e s a m e c o m m u n i t y, a n d w e ’ r e w o r k i n g o n t h r e e m o r e c o t t a g e s t h i s s u m m e r. Also, I think most of the people who build there and live there have an interest in architecture and design. Having a well-designed house is important to them. Q: What do you most enjoy about working here? A : I e n j o y g r e a t a r c h i t e c t u r e ; i t ’s f u n t o w o r k i n .
