WELCOME As we enjoy pleasant fall weather at Windsor, plans are well underway for the start of a new season and we welcome the return of our Members. Windsor has been quite busy during the offseason with a major golf course renovation. Renowned golf architect Robert Trent Jones Jr., and his team returned to our community to renovate the golf course he had originally designed in 1991. The refurbishment includes a full re-grassing across all playing surfaces and practice areas as well as implementation of several sustainable measures. See page 3 for more details. The Gallery at Windsor is busily preparing for an exhibition of works by celebrated contemporary British artist Rose Wylie. Opening January 28, 2020, this will be the third exhibition at Windsor presented in collaboration with the Royal Academy of Arts as part of a three-year curatorial partnership launched in 2018. GOLF COURSE REOPENING WINDSOR'S ROBERT TRENT JONES JR. COURSE REOPENS THIS SEASON When Windsor reopens its 18-hole links-style golf course this season after an over 8-month renovation, Members will be able to enjoy an even more exciting playing experience. With no tee times and pristine natural beauty, Windsor’s golf course – one of the few links-style golf courses in the U.S. – has always been a treasured and accessible amenity for Members and their guests. Often referred to as “Windsor’s Serengeti” for its undulating panorama of native trees bordering gentle, rolling fairways, the renovated par 72 course will encompass more than 120 acres. The course was originally designed by renowned golf course architect Robert Trent Jones Jr., in 1991. Jones returned with his team this year to recapture the design intent and update golf holes in concert with today’s game. “We are delighted to have been given the opportunity to return to Windsor, where I have many fond memories, and ‘polish the gem’ and refresh this prized golf course,” said Trent Jones Jr. “As the original architect, we kept true to the course’s original design while enhancing the fun factor throughout. The golf hole strategy and overall design theme remains ecologically sensitive

FROM CITYSCAPES TO GARDEN BREAKS A TROPICAL VACATION RETREAT Vero Beach Magazine has captured the bold, fresh look of one of the first homes ever built at Windsor in a 12-page feature in its August edition. The house was originally designed by urban planner Andrés Duany, who helped create Windsor’s architectural building code. The home had been built to take advantage of the site’s natural breezes and light. This strong connection to the outdoors was of utmost importance to the owners, based in New York City, who envisioned their Windsor home as a tropical vacation retreat. The family chose Richard Hershner, principal of RJH Design of New York City and Sarasota, Florida, to rework the interiors using inspiration from the natural beauty and spirit of the Caribbean. The breezy getaway was dressed in vibrant color palettes and tropical themed wallpaper, with rattan and bamboo pieces thoughtfully mixed in amongst the vintage and antique pieces. Although the family has only owned their vacation getaway for four years, they had been dreaming of living at Windsor since they were first introduced to the New Urbanist residential club by a relative 20 years ago. Today, their newly redecorated home serves as a relaxing haven from the harsh northern winters. Read the entire article at www.windsorflorida.com/news

DESTINATION VERO BEACH SOPHISTICATED, ADVENTUROUS AND ALWAYS RELAXED Vero Beach is sophisticated, oftentimes adventurous and always relaxed. This beach town’s myriad charms continue to gently lure visitors to its charming downtown, its pristine shoreline and its diverse landscape. While other Florida seaside towns literally reach for the sky with ever increasing wall-to-wall high rises built along the water, Vero Beach is passionate about remaining a nature-oriented, low-slung beach town with limited density. Vero Beach chose long ago to grow and change in a more relaxed, orderly fashion. That’s not to say Vero Beach is lacking any of the amenities of its big-city neighbors. There are world-class art exhibits, moving theatrical performances and top-notch dining and shopping opportunities. Straddling the Indian River Lagoon, Vero Beach was first established as a citrus shipping point using the Indian River to take its fruit to Jacksonville and then onto northern ports. After Henry Flagler's Florida East Coast Railroad arrived in Vero in the 1890s, developers began to drain the marshy land west of town to plant thousands of acres of citrus groves. Forward-thinking residents laid out their little village so they could live, work and play together without losing their natural scenic beauty. They planned wide streets that are now lined with mature coconut, royal and date palms. The Vero Beach Heritage and Indian River County Citrus Museum educates visitors about the town’s early years through historical photos, artifacts and displays.
Ballet Vero Beach
Today, Vero Beach is often praised for its arts and cultural scene that rivals what is found in larger cities. One favorite spot is the Vero Beach Museum of Art, a neoclassic structure with five art galleries, an outdoor sculptural garden and seven acres of park space overlooking the Indian River. Along with its permanent collection of more than 880 works of art, the museum has world-class temporary exhibitions, outdoor jazz concerts and other special events. Vero Beach’s Riverside Theatre is also a treasure, producing nearly 300 performances on two stages each year including plays, comedy shows, concerts and lectures. Meanwhile, Ballet Vero Beach entertains audiences with stunning performances each season. Vero Beach Opera produces and presents operatic concerts, fullystaged operas and international vocal competitions at various venues throughout the community. On the last Friday of every month, The Historical Downtown District becomes a street party with bands, demonstrations, street and food vendors. This family friendly (and dog friendly) event enjoys music, dancing, shopping and culinary delights. Daily shoppers and diners will find a wonderful mix of thriving locally owned boutiques along Ocean Drive as well as tantalizing restaurants. More shopping and dining opportunities can be found at the quaint Village Shops located on A1A and in Vero Beach’s historic downtown. Outdoor enthusiasts also love Vero Beach and its surrounding area for its scenic waterfront parks and beaches, the protected wildlife areas and the abundance of outdoor recreational opportunities, from birdwatching to eco-tours to kayaking. The Pelican Island National Wildlife Refuge supports endangered species, migratory birds and key fish spawning sites as well as sea turtle nesting sites. The Indian River Lagoon, which nearly surrounds the 64-acre island preserve, is the most diverse estuary in North America. McKee Botanical Garden strives to be at the forefront of environmental sustainability with lush acres of native and tropical plants, waterfalls and streams. This soothing sanctuary, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, also hosts educational programs, world-class art exhibits and other special events. Vero Beach is highly accessible by plane. Melbourne, Orlando and Palm Beach are the nearest international airports. Private planes can fly into Vero Beach Regional Airport, which is only a 15-minute drive from Windsor. During season Elite Airways offers a regular schedule of direct flights from New York to Vero Beach Regional Airport. The entire Vero Beach area remains a playground for Florida’s many visitors, and its fulltime and seasonal residents. Vero Beach Opera

ROSE WYLIE TO EXHIBIT AT WINDSOR Rose Wylie creates paintings and drawings that on first glance appear aesthetically simplistic, not seeming to align with any style or movement, but on closer inspection, are revealed to be wittily observed and subtly sophisticated meditations on the nature of visual representation itself. Wylie’s paintings pulsate with energy, and viewers will note things in her art relating to German painter and printmaker Albrecht Dürer and post-impressionist painter Paul Cézanne. In fact, Wylie's work has been the subject of renewed critical attention in recent years and has been called by some “the toast of the art world.” An exhibition of Wylie’s paintings and drawings will open January 28, 2020, at The Gallery at Windsor. This will be the third exhibition at Windsor presented in collaboration with the Royal Academy of Arts as part of a three-year curatorial partnership launched in 2018.

Comprehensively renovated in 2019, this lightfilled home features professional interior design and is offered furnished.
Although the New Urbanism planning and design movement was only in its beginning stages in the United States in the early 1980s, Windsor founders Hilary and Galen Weston recognized its importance for the future. They chose Andrés Duany and his wife Elizabeth PlaterZyberk, principals of Miami-based firm DPZ, to help them create a strict planning code for Windsor that would allow them to develop a resort-style community using New Urbanism principles. New Urbanism was meant to be an alternative to the sprawling housing

The Westons wanted a vibrant village center and homes with the kind of architectural character seen in places such as Charleston, Savannah and the British West Indies. Windsor calls this style of design “Anglo-Caribbean.” A June feature in Worth magazine recognizes Windsor as a pioneer in New Urbanism. Duany points out in the article that the Westons were taking a “tremendous risk” because New Urbanism was hardly an accepted way to design towns at that time.
