WINDSOR MATTERS JUNE 2022
EASTMAN RIVER EXPERIENCE & WINDSOR LAKE
SAFETY TIPS FOR KEEPING SUMMER FUN The Town of Windsor is a unique gem in an otherwise landlocked state. The town has two bodies of water available for fun summer activities: Windsor Lake and a dedicated area on the Cache la Poudre River known as the Eastman River Experience. Because both areas are bustling with activity in the summer, it’s important to remind residents that participation in water activities—particularly those in natural bodies of water—has inherent risks.
Windsor Lake There are some things to keep in mind when visiting Windsor Lake, located at 100 N. 5th St. Swimming is only allowed at designated swim beaches. Humans have one beach, dogs have another. Kayak, canoe, water tricycle, and paddleboard rentals are available during the summer and permits are required for all vessels that are on the lake. Requiring permits helps staff
track lake use, which helps plan for the lake's future. Those who are boating, kayaking, canoeing, and paddleboarding need to enter and exit the water at the boat launch located on the Birch Street parking lot. Rip rap, water inlets, and other hazards make entering the water unsafe in other locations. For safety's sake, the non-motorized boating schedule ensures people on kayaks and paddleboards can choose to be on the lake without motorized boats. Motorized boats are not allowed on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays. Per Colorado boating regulations, regardless if you are on a paddleboard or other floating vessel, a coast guard approved personal floatation device is required. Remote control boats are not allowed on Windsor Lake.
Eastman River Experience The best place to kayak and float on the Cache la Poudre River is in the designated river-mile at the Eastman
Park River Experience, 7025 Eastman Park Dr. Other areas on the river are known for having debris and spillways. New this year, individual tube rentals are available for $15 per day, at the park shelter. Before entering the river, visitors should know their limits as a watersport participant. This includes considering the depth of the water and the speed in which it flows. If caught in swift water, take the safety position—float on your back, cradle your safety vest, bend slightly at the waist, and keep your toes out of the water with feet pointing downstream—and move to the shore. With these tips in mind, everyone can have a safe summer in and on Windsor's waterways. For details about Windsor Lake, visit recreationliveshere.com/ WindsorLake.
