DO YOU WATER YOUR LAWN WITH A HOSE? CONSIDER THESE
A well cared-for lawn is a green, weed-free lawn—maybe with some healthy trees and shrubs, too. An investment like this should be protected and the question of how much and how often to water has no single answer. Consider the following when watering your lawn this season.
Lawn
1
The same 1,000 sq. ft. lawn can absorb up to 125 gallons of water on a hot day as compared to 10 gallons on a cool day. Watering your lawn in the morning or evening prevents the hot sun from scorching your plants and losing excess amounts of water to evaporation. Check the weather.
2
Soak, don’t sprinkle.
A good soaking once or twice a week is better for your lawn than daily light sprinklings. Deep watering produces strong, deep root systems that can safely withstand drought.
3
Coarse, sandy soil has large air spaces that quickly fill and drain, requiring shorter, more frequent watering. Heavier clay soil has smaller spaces that absorb and hold more water and should be watered less frequently. Know your soil.
If you don’t know where to start when it comes to your irrigation system, consider signing up for an outdoor water audit! Water audits are free to all Windsor residents and set your system up for success by running a series of performance tests, creating custom watering schedules and more. Outdoor audits are first come, first served and are only available through October. Learn more about Windsor Water Efficiency and sign up for an audit at windsorgov.com/WaterAudit.
