I invite you to experience something new or enjoy something tried and true. The Town of Windsor recently completed two separate surveys which are both available at www.windsorgov.com. These surveys indicated strong support for recreational opportunities, special events, and facilities. Your feedback is greatly appreciated! It gives staff a chance to learn about new programs you want to experience, and helps us to improve service!

This edition of the Link targets several feedback areas. Check out the community events including Oktoberfest on pages 2-4. How about a nature hike, offered collaboratively with Larimer County Open Lands, on page 3? Get together with friends, family, or co-workers and join a basketball or softball league – check out page 30. And if you’re looking to log some miles, watch for the new section of Windsor Trail – Greeley No.2 Ditch between 15th St. and 9th St. to be completed! Walking Levels for Trips and Tours The following Walking Levels will be assigned to each Active Adult trip or tour to help you decide which trips and tours are suitable for you. Each level is based upon research done by staff. The Windsor Community Recreation Center reserves the right to change levels if necessary when additional information becomes available.

Lily Lake and the Baldpate Inn Walk the short Lily Lake trail in Rocky Mountain National Park (walking level easy). After the walk, we will stop for a bite to eat at the Baldpate Inn, as well as go window shopping in Estes Park. Chicken Masala Dinner To dispel the myth that Indian cuisine is essentially vegetarian, this class teaches students to make Chicken Masala, a very popular dish throughout India.

Cauliflower and Potato Curry along with Basmati Rice provide a perfect compliment to this dinner. The twist in the plot is to learn how to mix rice with that ancient remedy against most germs & poisons (turmeric powder), all the while enhancing the taste. Denver Nuggets Skills Challenge The Denver Nuggets Skills Challenge is a FREE competition open to boys and girls that allows youngsters to showcase their talents in dribbling, passing, and shooting.

It is a youth program produced by the Denver Nuggets and Colorado Parks and Recreation Association with support from Comfort Dental and the Colorado Beef Council. Top scorers from each age group advance to a sectional competition and sectional winners advance to the State Championship to be held in conjunction with a Denver Nuggets game at the Pepsi Center.

Sports – Youth

Intermediate Basketball The Windsor Parks and Recreation Department will be holding free tryouts for boys & girls 2011 & 2012 intermediate basketball. Players must attend tryouts to be eligible for the league. Boys will play in Power to Play Sports Fall League, Oct - Nov. Girls will play either the Northern Colorado Girls Basketball League or the Power to Play Sports League. Each league has the option to compete in Gold Crown Foundation Basketball or play in the Power to Play Sports Winter League.

You will be evaluated on basketball skills, athleticism, and attitude. Games will be played primarily on Sundays. Practices begin in September.

Winter Basketball Camp

Experience the challenge and fun of AA and AAA baseball. You must tryout for these leagues each season. You will be evaluated on baseball skills, athleticism and attitude. AA teams will play in the Longmont Baseball League and AAA teams will play in the Fort Collins Rookie League. Call the Community Recreation Center at 970-674-3500 to be placed on a show of interest list. If you can’t make the tryout date call 674-3500 before the tryout dates to make other arrangements. Failing to do so may forfeit your eligibility to play in the 2011 season. There is no charge to tryout.

Camp Director Bruce Dick is one of the best motivators and shooting instructors in the game today. His camps will improve the ability of basketball players regardless of their ability or age. His teams play an exciting style of basketball and are always among the top 3 point shooting and free throw teams in Colorado.

Treasure Island Garden Located adjacent to Laku Lake Road, along the Poudre River Trail, south of Eastman Park.

Treasure Island Garden is a cooperative effort between the Town of Windsor and the Colorado Master Gardeners of Weld County.

Plant Select © Treasure Island Garden is a Colorado Plant Select Demonstration Garden. This cooperative program, administered by Denver Botanic Gardens & Colorado State University in concert with horticulturists & nurseries throughout the region, seeks to identify and distribute the very best plants for landscapes and gardens from the intermountain region to the high plains.

Brush Recycling Site­ What is the Brush Recycling Site?

The brush recycling site is a place for Windsor residents to take brush from trees and shrubs, grass clippings, and other recyclable yard waste. The brush is then ground into wood chips for Windsor residents to use as mulch in their yards.

Hours: Mon–Fri, 8am–3pm 1st & 3rd Sat of the month, 10am–2pm.

Location: 801 Diamond Valley Drive.

Permit Required: Residents who live within Windsor town limits may purchase a permit at the CRC or at Town Hall for $5. Permits are valid Jan–Dec within the year purchased. Please bring a valid State ID and a current Town of Windsor utility bill. Other restrictions may apply. Call 970-674-3500 or 970-674-2422 for more information.

Rules and Regulations: • Must purchase an annual permit • Permit must be displayed and clearly visible on vehicle when entering site.

Did you know?

Did you know the Town of Windsor owns and maintains trees in the public right of ways? In most cases, the right of way (ROW) is the strip of land between the street and sidewalk in the old part of town, but there are several exceptions (contact us if you have questions).

Before any work can be done to trees that are in, over, or upon the ROW, or any other work within the ROW, (i.e. installing an irrigation system), a permit must be obtained (Windsor ordinance Sec. 7-4-30 and Sec. 7-4-40). The town will plant, prune and remove if necessary any trees that are within the ROW and the property owner is responsible to water the trees.

If you would like a tree planted in the ROW in front of your home, or need any maintenance of the trees planted there, please call the Windsor forestry program at 970-674-2440.

Please remove any twine, wire, or wrapping around the brush.

The registration deadlines for each event are listed in this brochure under the event description. A “first come, first served” wait list will be maintained after the deadline date to fill any remaining event openings.

Waiting List Procedure:

Waiting lists are a source of contact and do not guarantee you will receive a call back. We will contact you only if a space becomes available.

Waiting lists for a closed class or sport provides us with a name and phone number in the event of a cancellation or if a new class is added. It does not limit you from registering for any other open class.

After initial registration, a refund request is required in writing a minimum of five (5) days prior to the start of any class or program to receive a full refund unless otherwise noted.

You may stop in to the Community Recreation Center or go visit www.windsorgov.com to fill out a refund request form. Four (4) days prior to the start date and through the first week of the session, 50% of the registration fee is refundable. No refunds or transfers will be allowed after the first week of the session unless circumstances, stated in writing, warrant consideration.

Full refunds will be given if the Recreation Department cancels a class or program. Please note: minimum participation numbers must be met or programs may be cancelled. No refunds or transfers will be accepted less than two (2) days prior to the start of a program that only meets once.

The Windsor Parks and Recreation Department’s goal is to provide our participants opportunities to form new friendships, meet new people, and have a fun recreational atmosphere with teams as balanced as possible. Special requests are not taken. Only the head coach and one assistant coach’s children are placed on teams together.

Teams are randomly selected by computer or by assessments, separated by skill level, age or grade and gender if applicable.

Participants must recognize that all classes/ activities of a physical nature involve some risk and by registering for a class/activity of this nature, there is an assumption of risk by the participant.
