Colorado Bike Month Leave the car at home and bike to work!

To celebrate bicycling for transportation, fun and health, Colorado has designated each June as Bike Month. While there will be many events around the state throughout the month, the highlight of the month is Bike to Work Day, when employees leave their cars at home and enjoy bicycling to work.

The Town of Windsor Student Advisory Leadership Team is a self sustaining group made up of local Middle School and High School students who want to make a difference in the community.

They are credited with providing over a dozen safe activities a year for teens and the community. The goal is to provide positive alternative activities that students will want to participate in. S.A.L.T. holds bi-weekly meetings where new events are planned and ideas are discussed to better the community. An Exhibit at the Windsor Community Recreation Center

Hop the train and try your luck in Windsor. Back in the 1930s, hobos rode the rails from town to town looking for work and a decent meal. The small town of Windsor was considered a safe haven for hobos. Come live and play at the hobo camp, work for your food, and learn the“hobo code”. This program teaches children about the Dust Bowl and the Great Depression using music, art, stories, and the language of hobos.

June 20th – August 26th, 2011 The Town of Windsor Museum presents Hollywood, Colorado, a traveling exhibit developed by the Aurora History Museum. This exhibit explores the myriad of movies that have been filmed in part or in their entirety in Colorado.

Colorado has been the backdrop for over 500 movies since 1898.

Movies such as the original True Grit, starring John Wayne, and Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, starring Robert Redford and Paul Newman are notable examples. More recent movies filmed in Colorado include, City Slickers, Catch and Release, Resurrecting the Champ, and The Bucket List. The exhibit features original movie posters and footage of more than 100 years of Colorado films set in areas such as Golden, Morrison, Cañon City and throughout the high country.

Did you know that the Denver Zoo is open every day of the year and is home to nearly 4,000 animals? The Zoo recently announced the birth of a male De Brazza’s Monkey named Kanoa. He was born to mother, Marinda and father, Kisoro, on November 27. This is the second birth for Kisoro, who came to the Denver Zoo under unique circumstances. Curry in a Hurry What do you get when American efficiency meets the authentic Indian curry? Sapna introduces you to curry in the modern world by teaching three different styles of Indian curry, each taking less than 15 minutes without compromising taste or flavor. All dishes that are hot and spicy are not curries. All Curries are not fiery hot, either. Once you familiarize yourself with these unique styles, you can use them to make vegetables, fish or even fruit curries. 2nd Session: Use the palette knife for a beginning landscape painting class

Learn to paint with the palette knife for safer cleanup of oil paints. Students need to bring 2 palette knives; small size 1001 and large size 1002. One canvas size 11 x 14 and one tube of titanium white paint (prefer water soluble oil paint). Also bring paper towels each week. Learn to teach basic obedience and manners for adult dogs over 6 months of age. The instructor’s unique and innovative reward training techniques make training adolescent and adult dogs a peaceful and enjoyable experience. Initial exercises and games focus on calming, settling-down and regaining attention to facilitate teaching basic manners – sit, down, stand, stay, walking on-leash and polite greetings. The aim is to prepare novices to both enjoy fencing with partners and to continue learning more advanced skills and strategies. Participants are required to wear athletic shoes and pants. Novices, improve and expand your fencing skill with the foil. Emphasis is on mastering the fundamental skills and strategies of the sport through work and games in groups and pairs, occasional short individual lessons, and plenty of fencing bouts. Participants MUST have passed the Basic Fencing Test and/or have Coach Permer’s permission. Participants are required to wear athletic shoes and pants. Females must wear a chest guard (provided). Fencing equipment is provided.

Kenpo Karate emphasizes martial arts skills, integrity and individual achievement. It is strongly based in selfdefense as well as traditional katas, or forms, presented in a well organized curriculum. Students also benefit from discipline, confidence, fitness, coordination and fun! By earning a progressive belt rank, students find a sense of accomplishment as they build selfesteem. Belt testing is encouraged but not required.

Top twirling instructor & Director of the Rocky Mountain Golden Girls Baton Academy, Yvonne Pedersen, has introduced this fun and developmental activity to Windsor with great success.

This outstanding program will offer a great way to build coordination, rhythm, and grace, in addition to self-esteem, discipline, and teamwork skills. Register for the June session to be eligible to march in the Windsor Harvest Festival Parade.

No experience required.

Kenpo Karate emphasizes martial arts skills, integrity and individual achievement. It is strongly based in selfdefense as well as traditional katas, or forms, presented in a well organized curriculum. Students also benefit from discipline, confidence, fitness, coordination and fun! The Tiger program also offers stranger awareness. Panthers are introduced to the Five Rules of Safety. By earning a progressive belt rank, students find a sense of accomplishment as they build self-esteem. Belt testing is encouraged but not required.

Introduction to Archery Discover the art of archery using a hand held bow. Instructor is NFAA trained.

Instructor/student ratio will be 1:4. Basic archery skills will be taught including: archery range safety, safe use of archery equipment, beginning and intermediate shooting skills using instinctive aiming methods, shooting range practice.

Recreational volleyball is an easy way to learn the basics of volleyball while having tons of fun and making new friends!

A grass roots program, CARA youth tennis is great for new comers to the sport of tennis as well as players with more advanced skills. Players will learn at their own pace. Match play will be held on Fridays for both age groups.

Matches are played in Windsor, Greeley, Eaton, Loveland and Ft. Collins. Match schedules will be made available during the second week of practices. Rockies Skills Challenge

Pitch Hit and Run is the Official Skills Competition of the Major League Baseball. This grass roots program is designed to provide youngsters with an opportunity to compete free of charge, in a competition that recognizes individual excellence in core baseball skills.

Competitors have the chance to advance through four levels of competition, including the Team Championships at Major League ballparks and the National Finals at the 2011 MLB All-Star Game.

All participants must bring a copy of their birth certificate and fill out a registration/ waiver form prior to the start of the competition.

Co-sponsored by the Colorado Rockies and the Colorado Parks and Recreation Association, this challenge, open to boys and girls, is a fun competition that tests skills in base running, batting off a tee, and throwing for distance and accuracy.

The top boy and girl in each division will advance to a sectional competition in July.

(Copy of birth certificate will be needed from winners.) Sectional winners will advance to the State Championships at All Star Park in August.

Youth Baseball Camp

High School Summer Baseball

The Wizard Youth Baseball Camp, coordinated by the Windsor High School coaches and players is designed to teach basic instruction. The camp will utilize baseball drills in a fun and exciting way while learning baseball skills taught at the high school level. Clinic participants will get a camp t-shirt and chances to win prizes including Rockies tickets. Camp will conclude with the Aquafina Pitch Hit and Run Competition.

This competitive baseball league is an extension of the Windsor High School baseball program and organized by the high school baseball coaches. Players will initially be split into three teams, Varsity, JV, and C team with the possibility of moving from one team to another throughout the season. Teams play 25to-35 games in both wooden bat and aluminum bat leagues. Teams will also participate in tournaments during the season and post-season.

Payments

All major forms of credit cards are accepted as well as cash, checks, money orders or cashier checks. **Payments by check: The Town of Windsor will charge a $15 service fee for all checks not honored for any reason by the bank.

Checks should be made payable to “Windsor Recreation Department” and should include your driver’s license or identification number, issuing state, and expiration date.** Full payment must be made at the time of registration.

Reduced Fees

Eligible participants in our Reduced Fee Program can receive a discount off the registration fee. Applications are available at the Community Recreation Center or online at www.windsorgov.com. Please see page 36 for more information.

Deadlines:

The registration deadlines for each event are listed in this brochure under the event description. A “first come, first served” wait list will be maintained after the deadline date to fill any remaining event openings.

Waiting List Procedure:

Waiting lists are a source of contact and do not guarantee you will receive a call back. We will contact you only if a space becomes available.

Waiting lists for a closed class or sport provides us with a name and phone number in the event of a cancellation or if a new class is added. It does not limit you from registering for any other open class.

Class sizes may be limited to assure class quality and safety. Minimum participation numbers must be met or programs may be cancelled.

Refund Policy:

After initial registration, a refund request is required in writing a minimum of five (5) days prior to the start of any class or program to receive a full refund unless otherwise noted.

You may stop in to the Community Recreation Center or go visit www.windsorgov.com to fill out a refund request form. Four (4) days prior to the start date and through the first week of the session, 50% of the registration fee is refundable. No refunds or transfers will be allowed after the first week of the session unless circumstances, stated in writing, warrant consideration.

Full refunds will be given if the Recreation Department cancels a class or program. Please note: minimum participation numbers must be met or programs may be cancelled. No refunds or transfers will be accepted less than two (2) days prior to the start of a program that only meets once.

The Windsor Parks and Recreation Department’s goal is to provide our participants opportunities to form new friendships, meet new people, and have a fun recreational atmosphere with teams as balanced as possible.

Special requests are not taken. Only the head coach and one assistant coach’s children are placed on teams together. Teams are randomly selected by computer, separated by skill level, age or grade and gender if applicable.

Notice to Participants:

Participants must recognize that all classes/ activities of a physical nature involve some risk and by registering for a class/activity of this nature, there is an assumption of risk by the participant. Every effort is made to ensure the safety of the participants and to provide them with first class recreational facilities, activities and parks. In the event of a serious accident or illness, it is the policy of the Town of Windsor to: 1. Call 911 for emergency personnel for first aid.

2. Reach the parent or guardian as soon as the situation allows.

Each registration must have a waiver signed by either a parent or legal guardian.

Reduced Fee Program

The Windsor Parks and Recreation Department has a reduced fee program that offers financial assistance to both children and adults who need support in order to participate in recreation activities. Please contact the Community Recreation Center to obtain an application. Your request will be confidentially reviewed and approved based on financial qualifications. For details see pages 21, 39, or 44.
