In 1943, President Roosevelt announced the creation of what would become the largest Mexican guest-worker program in U.S. history. “Bittersweet Harvest: The Bracero Program, 1942-1964,” a new bilingual (English/Spanish) exhibition, will explore the braceros’ contributions to communities in Mexico and the United States, the opportunities that became available to braceros and the challenges that they faced as guest workers during the war years and afterward. The exhibit will be on view at the Art & Heritage Center from November 17, 2012 to January 27, 2013, part of a two-year, multi-city tour. A complementary display will be on view at the Windsor Community Recreation Center. Please visit www. windsorgov.com/artandheritage or call (970) 674-2439 for exhibit details and information about exhibit-related programs.

“Bittersweet Harvest: The Bracero Program, 1942-1964” is organized by the National Museum of American History and organized for travel by SITES. Funding is made possible through the Smithsonian’s Latino Center, which celebrates Latino culture, spirit and achievement in America by facilitating the development of exhibitions, research, collections and education programs.

What nature destroyed, it also preserved. Hundreds of exceptional artifacts offer an insider’s glimpse into the daily life -and tragic end -- of this ancient Roman city that was destroyed by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD 79. On display are archaeological treasures that lay buried in Pompeii’s ruins, preserved as if sealed in a time capsule. After the exhibit, take in the IMAX film, Space Junk 3D. 50 years of launching our dreams into space, we now face a troubling legacy: a growing ring of orbiting debris from various rockets and satellites. Space Junk 3D is a visually explosive, sensory-expanding voyage into our now-threatened “final frontier.” Walking Level: Easy
