Arbor Day 5K Run/Walk The Town of Windsor Tree Board will host the 8th Annual Arbor Day 5K Run/Walk on Saturday, April 20th. The race will start and finish at Boardwalk Park and follow the Windsor Lake Trail. Proceeds will go towards planting trees throughout the

community. Leashed dogs are welcome. Preregister at the CRC or on race day beginning at 7am. Fee includes a t-shirt (while supplies last). Awards will be given to the top runners/walkers and lots of giveaways will be handed out!

Each year, the Town of Windsor offers a great selection of trees to Windsor residents at discount prices. These trees grow well in the Windsor area and are to be planted within town limits (for clarification on residency, please check your property tax statement). Holiday Lights Tour Get ready for a wonderful evening touring spectacular holiday displays throughout Denver. We’ll start the evening out with dinner – location TBD. Denver Art Museum Van Gogh Exhibit An in-depth exploration of Vincent van Gogh’s unconventional path to becoming one of the world’s most recognizable artists, Becoming Van Gogh examines critical steps in his artistic evolution through more than 70 paintings and drawings by Van Gogh, along with works by artists to whom he responded such as Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec and Camille Pissarro. Becoming Van Gogh brings together loans from more than 60 public and private collections throughout Europe and North America to tell the story of a number of key formative periods throughout the artist’s career. Art Casting Foundry - Loveland Loveland is a thriving arts community uniquely decorated with an enormous variety of wonderful bronze sculptures throughout the city providing the ideal creative environment for artists. Art Castings of Colorado was started in 1972 and operated out of a 2,500 square foot building that has now grown to more than 25,000 square feet.

Breckenridge Snow Sculpture Tour In Breckenridge each year, blank canvases of snow become works of art. From a whimsical bouquet of enormous flowers, to thought provoking abstract shapes, sculptors form these masterpieces before thousands of spectators over the course of five days in the heart of town. In its 23rd year, artists from all over the world will come together to present intricate, awe-inspiring snow sculptures. These artists will carve twentyton, 12-foot-tall blocks of snow into pieces of art using only their creativity, inspiration, own two hands and permitted hand tools.

Coors Brewery Tour - Golden The tour takes place in the world’s largest single-site brewery. The brewery experience includes a 30-minute self-paced tour highlighting malting, brewing & packaging processes. Cool off in the “fresh beer room,” where visitors can sip a cold sample and rest on ice-cube benches in a refrigerated room.

Wings Over the Rockies - Denver Tour the Wings Over the Rockies Museum.

This museum preserves the history of Lowry AFB’s operations from 1938 to 1994 in its collections, archives, and research library.

Features of the museum’s collection includes Colorado Aviation Historical Society’s Alexander Eaglerock biplane built in Englewood, USAF’s B-1A Lancer bomber, and over three dozen other military and generation aircraft. Nestled on the banks of Cherry Creek, the Four Mile House was the last stop coming west to Denver along the Cherokee Trail. It was a welcome site for the weary travelers, a place to wash off the trail dust, have a drink of cool fresh water, find a home-cooked meal, or spend the night before heading in to Denver. The house was built in 1859 by the Brantner brothers who planned to settle in the area. The Brantners sold the Four Mile House to the widow Mary Cawker in 1860.

Mary and her two teenage children opened the house as a stage stop from 1860 to 1864, when she sold the property to Levi and Mille Booth. The Booths continued to offer the same hospitality to travelers, while building a thriving farm. Today, the twelve-acre site serves as a portal into Denver and the West’s pioneer past. The Four Mile House, a Denver Landmark, is the centerpiece of the Park and is listed on the National Registrar of Historic Places. Visitors can tour the historic house, say hello to horses, goats, and chickens, learn about the craftsmanship of the historic barns and outbuildings, or just spread a blanket under a shady tree and enjoy a beautiful day.

Dal, a Sanskrit name that refers to all pulses, legumes, and their food derivatives, still forms the mainstay of the amino acid (protein) supply to the largely vegetarian billion odd, in the Indian subcontinent. In addition to being high in protein, lentils also contain a copious amount of essential dietary fiber, vitamins, and minerals. Introduction to How Foods Fight Diabetes Diabetes is a major public health problem of epidemic proportions.

Uncontrolled, diabetes can lead to complications from head to toe, including stroke, loss of vision, heart disease, kidney failure and various problems due to nerve damage and circulatory problems.

Research studies have demonstrated that a plant-based nutrition approach reduces the risk of diabetes and can greatly benefit those who have been diagnosed with the disease. This class offers a cooking demonstration, and provides samples of delicious and health-promoting dishes.

Certain diet patterns seem to have a major effect in helping people diagnosed with cancer to live longer, healthier lives. The National Cancer Institute research shows that as much as 50% of cancer risk may be related to diet. In this class, you will learn about the right food choices that can help reduce the risk of developing cancer as well as overcome the disease after it has been diagnosed. This class is an introduction to how foods fight cancer while enjoying a cooking demonstration and tasting delicious, healthful dishes.

If you have taken an artwork, photograph, poster or other object to a frame shop and were surprised by the price of custom framing, you may be motivated to learn some basic matting and framing skills. Denver Nuggets Skills Challenge The Denver Nuggets Skills Challenge is a FREE competition open to boys and girls that allows youngsters to showcase their talents in dribbling, passing, and shooting. This youth program is produced by the Denver Nuggets and Colorado Parks and Recreation Association. Parents Assoc. for Youth Sports & Sport Specific Info. The PAYS program helps parents and youth leagues work together to provide the best possible sports experience for children. If you have previously attended the PAYS portion of the Parent Meeting, you do not need to attend again. NEW Concussion training starts at 7pm. This training educates parents about the signs and symptoms of concussions while emphasizing the seriousness of head injuries. If you have attended the concussion training you are not required to attend again. The sport specific portion of the meeting starts at 7:30pm, which covers season schedules, rules and more.

NYSCA training teaches coaches their responsibilities and holds them accountable to a strict code of conduct. It is mandatory for youth coaches to come to one of the scheduled meetings during the year!

Coaches must stay for the entire two hours.

Winter Water and Landscape Tips

Watering Trees and Shrubs During Winter

Dry air, little soil moisture and fluctuating temperatures are common during fall and winter. Without supplemental irrigation, many plants suffer from damage. Many trees and shrubs do not respond immediately to drought, but severe drought stress can affect plant growth, health and vigor for years. Winter injury usually results in death of fine root hairs, which absorb water and nutrients. Plants may also be weakened, resulting in increased disease and insect problems.

Water plants only when daytime temperatures are above 40° F. Apply water during the middle of the day so plants have time to soak up water before possible freezing at night.

Plants near the foundation of the home or fences are more susceptible to injury due to reflected heat and intense sunlight. Established trees and shrubs should be watered every four weeks if there is no snow cover or natural precipitation. Newly planted trees and shrubs should be watered every two weeks. Pay special care to evergreens, as their needles continue to lose water throughout the winter.

This cooperative program, administered by Denver Botanic Gardens & Colorado State University in concert with horticulturists & nurseries throughout the region, seeks to identify and distribute the very best plants for landscapes and gardens from the intermountain region to the high plains.

Treasure Island Garden grew and donated over a ton of fresh produce to the Windsor Food Pantry. Come out to the garden next year and help us pick, its a great start to a summer day.

All major forms of credit cards are accepted as well as cash, checks, money orders or cashier checks. **Payments by check: The Town of Windsor will charge a $15 service fee for all checks not honored for any reason by the bank.

Reduced Fees

Eligible participants in our Reduced Fee Program can receive a discount off the registration fee. Applications are available at the Community Recreation Center or online at www.windsorgov.com. Please see pages 21 & 34 for information.

Refund Policy:

After initial registration, a refund request is required in writing a minimum of five (5) days prior to the start of any class or program to receive a full refund unless otherwise noted. Four (4) days prior to the start date and through the first week of the session, 50% of the registration fee is refundable. No refunds or transfers will be allowed after the first week of the session unless circumstances, stated in writing, warrant consideration. Refund request forms are located at the Community Recreation Center or visit www.windsorgov.com.

Waiting lists are a source of contact and do not guarantee you will receive a call back. We will contact you only if a space becomes available.

Waiting lists for a closed class or sport provides us with a name and phone number in the event of a cancellation or if a new class is added. It does not limit you from registering for any other open class.

Minimums/Maximums:

Class sizes are limited to assure class quality and safety. Minimum participation numbers must be met or programs may be cancelled.

Team Selection:

The Parks, Recreation & Culture Department’s goal is to provide participants opportunities to form new friendships, and have a fun recreational atmosphere with teams as balanced as possible.

Special requests are not taken. Only the head coach and one assistant coach’s children are placed on teams together. Teams are randomly selected by computer or by assessments, separated by skill level, age or grade and gender if applicable.

Participants must recognize that all classes/ activities of a physical nature involve some risk and by registering for a class/activity of this nature, there is an assumption of risk by the participant. Every effort is made to ensure the safety of the participants and to provide them with first class recreational facilities, activities and parks.

In the event of a serious accident or illness, it is the policy of the Town of Windsor to: 1. Call 911 for emergency personnel for first aid.

2. Reach the parent or guardian as soon as the situation allows.

Each registration must have a waiver signed by either a parent or legal guardian.

The Windsor Parks, Recreation & Culture Department has a reduced fee program that offers financial assistance to both children and adults who need support in order to participate in recreation activities. Please contact the Community Recreation Center to obtain an application. Your request will be confidentially reviewed and approved based on financial qualifications. For details see page 19, 34.

Arbor Day Tree Sale

Each year, Windsor Forestry teams up with the Windsor Tree Board to help keep Windsor green!

There will be a great selection of trees that grow well in the area provided at a discounted price! Trees are available for Windsor residents to be planted within the town limits.
