National Institute of Standards and Technology (Boulder) Spend the day learning about the mission of the NIST. This very important government institute supplies industry, academia, government, and other users with over 1,300 Standard Reference Materials (SRMs). These artifacts are certified as having specific characteristics or component content, used as calibration standards for measuring equipment and procedures, quality control benchmarks for industrial processes, and experimental control samples. NIST’s Boulder laboratories are best known for NIST F1, which houses an atomic clock. NIST F1 serves as the source of the nation’s official time. From its measurement of the natural resonance frequency of caesium— which is used to define the second—NIST broadcasts time signals via longwave radio stations. JHB Button CO. Tour (Denver) JHB began with a request from a friend to Mrs. Jean H. Barr, founder (1920-2008). Mrs. Barr was preparing to leave on a European buying trip for her family business and was asked to find a specific style of sweater button. She fulfilled that request and began her company in the basement of her Denver home. From this modest beginning, the company has grown to be one of the major suppliers of fashion, novelty and basic buttons in the United States and is the international leader in novelty buttons. After the tour, we’ll stop for lunch on our way home. Walking Level: Easy–Moderate Register by: Apr 12 Ages: 55+ Min 8/Max 14 #111420.015

Fort St. Vrain Power Plant Tour (Platteville) Fort St. Vrain was the first commercial-scale nuclear power plant in the United States to be decommissioned. Remaining spent fuel is stored on site at an Independent Spent Fuel Storage facility owned and operated by the Department of Energy. Fort St. Vrain’s successful re-powering enabled Xcel Energy to re-use approximately $60 million in assets from the plant’s nuclear era to continue to generate electricity for its customers. The plant is now capable of producing more than three times the electricity it could during its history as a nuclear facility and plays a crucial role in enabling Xcel Energy to meet the growing electricity needs of its Front Range customers. Scooter Hinge and Black Canyon Whiskey Distillery Tours (Mead) The visual smorgasbord inside Scooter Hinge would take days -- maybe even weeks -- to fully digest. Tour this kitschy nostalgic rental hall, nestled in the heart of downtown Mead, housing scores of eccentric memorabilia hunted down and fixed up by the building’s owner, Stan Luebbers. After a break for lunch at the Red Rooster, we’ll walk to the Black Canyon Whiskey Distillery and see how they make their inebriants, being sure to sample some of their “Whiskyritta”, their own take on Sangria. After the tour we will stumble back to the bus for our chauffeured ride home. Walking Level: Easy–Moderate Register by: Mar 28 Ages: 55+ Min 8/Max 14 #111420.13

Forestry Treasure Island Garden Located adjacent to Laku Lake Road, along the Poudre River Trail, south of Eastman Park. Treasure Island Garden is a cooperative effort between the Town of Windsor and DiGGers, a group of committed master gardeners.
Treasure Island Demonstration Garden had a very unique growing season in 2013, considering late snow, mid-summer hail and the late summer flood. It was a challenging year, but the garden produced almost a ton of veggies for the Windsor Food Pantry in 2013. To hear the tales, become a part of the action, or schedule a tour, make Treasure Island Demonstration Garden part of your personal or group events over the winter months. Call 970-686-2999 for information.
Treasure Island Demonstration Garden (TIDG) is a partnership between the Town of Windsor and the DiGGers a group of committed master gardeners. Every effort is made to ensure the safety of the participants and to provide them with first class recreational facilities, activities and parks. In the event of a serious accident or illness, it is the policy of the Town of Windsor to: 1. Call 911 for emergency personnel for first aid. 2. Reach the parent or guardian as soon as the situation allows. Each registration must have a waiver signed by either a parent or legal guardian.
