2017 RARE & FINE WINE AUCTION FEATURED WINEMAKER: CHUCK WAGNER Chuck Wagner has spent his life in the vineyards of Rutherford, near the center of Napa Valley, steering his family’s business from its earliest beginnings to the present day. Through the years, he has lived through many changes and has been recognized for his winemaking and industry leadership – but he still holds onto a deep humility as well as appreciation for great wine, family and the connections between the two. Chuck was just 19 when he joined his parents in 1972 to create Caymus Vineyards, taking them up on their proposal to sell the home wines they had been making from grapes they grew on their property. He and his father, Charlie, worked long days side by side, managing every part of the business. His mother, Lorna, took on many jobs including work on the bottling line. Lunches eaten together each day remain one of Chuck’s favorite memories, a tradition he has carried on with his own home-cooked breakfasts for his kids. Both father and son believed in making wines with character, complexity and consistency. They embraced Napa’s unique climate and soil, helping to establish the region’s singular style and reputation for Cabernet Sauvignon. One of the family’s most exciting moments came in 1989, when Wine Spectator awarded them “Wine of the Year” for their 1984 Caymus Special Selection Cabernet Sauvignon. Five years later, the magazine conferred the award again for their 1990 vintage, the only wine in the world to receive this honor twice. For Chuck, an even greater reward has come as his children have joined the business. Caymus is now part of the Wagner Family of Wine which includes Mer Soleil Chardonnay and the California blend Conundrum by Charlie, Emmolo Sauvignon Blanc and Merlot made by Jenny, two of Chuck’s four children. While everyone has a unique point of view, they also share some common family traits – namely, a passion for hard work and trying out new ideas, as they balance tradition with pushing the boundaries to make even better wine. They also get their hands dirty. Along with the rest of the family, Chuck can still be found in the vineyard and continues to experiment with farming techniques and other aspects of winemaking. He was honored in 2007 to be recognized with Wine Spectator’s Distinguished Service Award, presented to individuals who have made significant and long-lasting contributions to the wine industry. Yet despite his business success, Chuck remains largely a farmer at heart. He still believes that at the end of the day, wine is meant to be shared with family and friends. And he marvels at his good fortune to be living in Napa and working in the wine business. 4

The elegance of the 2012 Chardonnay McCrea Vineyard is obvious in its crisp, orange blossom, lemon oil, fresh minerallaced, medium to full-bodied style. The texture is there, the wine has impressive purity, and a hint of orange marmalade follows through in the flavors as well. This is a lovely, delicately oaked, flavorful Chardonnay to drink over the next 4-6 years.

5. 2014 Aubert Chardonnay Hudson Vineyard, 750ml Rated 95 by Wine Advocate

9. 2014 Mayacamas Vineyards Chardonnay, Napa Valley, 750ml Rated 96 by Antonio Galloni The 2014 Chardonnay is brilliant. Lemon oil, white flowers, mint, almonds and smoke are all beautifully delineated in this transparent, super-finessed Chardonnay built on total finesse. The decision to pick a touch earlier plus the blocked malo style result in a focused, energetic Chardonnay that hits all the right notes.

Highly nuanced nose offers raspberry, violet, minerals, licorice, mocha, tobacco and flowers, plus a whiff of game. Large-scaled, fat and rich; a bit plumper and more oily in the middle than the Tychson Hill and Herb Lamb offerings but ultimately less nuanced. But this impressively sweet and sexy wine is a no-brainer for those who can find and afford it. Finishes broad and spicy, with very fine-grained tannins.

Just Cayuse, At Its Carnal Best, Magnum with Display Box, 3 x 750ml Bottles 1. 2 008 Cayuse Vineyards Bionic Frog Syrah, Walla Walla Valley, 750ml Rated 100 by Wine Enthusiast
“Initially a rather subdued Frog; as if it has been tamed down. Then, suddenly, there’s a plush core of blackberry fruit, and the classic Cayuse funkiness...drenched in liquid rocks and cured meat and drying tannins. It’s all in proportion...As it opens gracefully you discover that it is a stunningly refined Frog, quite possibly the best ever; powerful and distinctive, but also elegant, feminine.”
“...a high-toned, penetrating nose that one can scarcely avoid calling Cote Rotie-like: bacon fat, fresh cherry, kirsch, framboise, and violet....also black tea, caramel, and a penetrating note of sealing wax that’s reminiscent of mature Bordeaux...The interplay of flavors here is kaleidoscopic and at the same time almost eye-squintingly bright...as the wine opens to the air, a real layering and interplay emerges of diverse carnal elements alone: smoked meat, game, bloody roasted red meat, marrow and bone meal...A truly awesome effort.”
3. 2010 Cayuse Vineyards En Chamberlin Vineyard Syrah, Walla Walla Valley, 750ml Rated 96 by Robert Parker
“...always the most exotic and wild of the lineup,...has the Cayuse peat moss, iodine, underbrush, olive brine and gamey qualities on full display. Blossoming in the glass and showing a core of sweet fruit, it has a rich, substantial feel on the palate with a concentrated, full-bodied mouthfeel, brilliant midpalate depth and a focused, detailed finish that carries ample finely polished tannin.”

currants, blackberries, brown spices and dark-roasted coffee beans. In the mouth, the wine is lush and expansive, rich in berry fruit with a firm “grip” that makes the wine’s texture an important part of its character. The finish is long and classic—ripe fruit dominates.
3. 2011 Caymus Special Selection Cabernet Sauvignon, 3L Rated 94 by Wine Spectator
2011 was a very challenging vintage as it was one of the coolest we have seen in a long time. This year our experience came in handy as we still managed to produce a quality wine, despite the rain‐spattered vintage… A rich, dense ruby color, hints at the dark fruit nose of blackberry and currant that carries through to the palate, interwoven with complex aromas of black licorice, anise and crème de cassis. On the palate, the wine opens up to reveal an earthiness, with brown spice, cigar box and ripe dark fruits that linger throughout the extracted and long finish. The texture is opulent and rich, yet has a velvety quality with supple density. Rich, fine‐grained tannins are balanced with ripe fruit, acidity and oak.

3 Decade Vertical of 3L Bottles, Caymus Special Selection Cabernet Sauvignon Vertical trio of 3L bottles Caymus Vineyards Special Selection Cabernet Sauvignon – Highly rated vintages spanning 3 decades of Wagner winemaking all signed by winemaker Chuck Wagner: 1. 1991 Caymus Special Selection Cabernet Sauvignon, 3L Rated 99 by Wine Spectator The 1991 vintage was long and cool, allowing the fruit to ripen evenly and to full maturity. At 30 months, aging in French barrels, this wine emerged demonstrating similar characteristics to that of the 1987 and 1990 vintages. The 1991 Special Selection Cabernet Sauvignon is adventurous in its raspberry, blackberry, and cherry characteristics and lusciously balanced with an elegant spiciness. The coffee and chocolate nose is complimented by the expressive oak note typical of Special Selection Cabernet.
2. 2003 Caymus Special Selection Cabernet Sauvignon, 3L Rated 93 by Wine Spectator The 2003 harvest was long, stretching into November after some early blocks were picked following heat spikes in September. We harvested each small vineyard block as we judged its fruit to be fully mature…Although yields were low this year, the wines that made the grade were worthy of our patience: full-bodied, dark in color, ripe, and concentrated, with sweet tannins. 1986 Marques de Murrieta Castillo Ygay Gran Reserva Especial, Rioja DOCa, 750ml Rated 100 by James Suckling
This is a triumph. An amazing white showing roasted pineapple, dried apple, flowers and hints of lemon curd on the nose. Hints of almonds, too. Full-body, closed and tight with amazing depth and beauty. Waxy, salty, and creamy. Goes on for minutes.
1994 Dalla Valle Vineyards Maya, Napa Valley, 750ml Rated 99 by Wine Advocate
Dense garnet to violet, viscous mouth feel. Bright ripe fruit. Beautiful floral and intense dark fruit aromas that are expansive in the mouth and evocative of sweet violets, raspberries, blackberries and some woodsy notes. The wine is rich and dense with an excellent balance of black fruit to tannins. Completely balanced. Overall impression is of lots of fruit and lots of tannins with lots of layers and depths. Unified and seamless. Elixir like.
1995 Chateau Latour, Pauillac, 750ml Rated 95 by Robert Parker
A beauty, the opaque dense purple-colored 1995 exhibits jammy
cassis, vanillin, and minerals in its fragrant but still youthful aromatics. Medium to full-bodied, with exceptional purity, superb concentration, and a long, intense, ripe, 40-second finish, this is a magnificent example of Latour.
1995 Chateau Margaux, 750ml Rated 95 by Robert Parker
...the 1995 has continued to flesh out, developing into one of the great classics made under the Mentzelopoulos regime. The color is opaque ruby/purple. The nose offers aromas of licorice and sweet smoky new oak intermixed with jammy black fruits, licorice, and minerals. The wine is medium to full-bodied, with extraordinary richness, fabulous equilibrium, and hefty tannin in the finish.
2005 Hundred Acre Kayli Morgan Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley, 750ml Rated 100 by Robert Parker
The 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon Kayli Morgan is perfection! It was too easy to deliver the ultimate three-digit score. A sensational nose of pen ink, graphite, forest floor, crème de cassis, a hint of white chocolate, and cedar wood are all present in this majestic, multi-layered wine built like a skyscraper. The freshness is still a component part of this full-bodied, stunningly concentrated wine that is pure Napa purity, power and compelling intensity.
2007 Clos Saint-Jean Deus-Ex Machina Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Rhone, 750ml Rated 100 by Robert Parker
A bigger, richer, more masculine style than the la Combe des Fous, the powerhouse styled 2007 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Deus Ex Machina is an insanely good wine that has a huge nose of roasted meats, crushed rocks, graphite, spice and black currants. It has a serious amount of tannin, but they’re still covered by a wealth of fruit, and it’s impeccably balanced and doesn’t have a hard edge anywhere.
2007 Quilceda Creek Cabernet Sauvignon, Columbia Valley, 750ml Rated 100 by Robert Parker
A monumental wine in the making, the 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon is one of those wines that presents such an over the top array of aromas and flavors...Offering up perfumed, intense aromas of plum, violets, ink, licorice and black currants, it flows onto the palate with a massive, incredibly full-bodied texture that builds through the mid-palate and carries layers of polished tannins, awesome purity of fruit and blockbuster length.
2010 Il Poggione Proprietá Franceschi Brunello di Montalcino, 750ml Rated 98 by Robert Parker
The 2010 Brunello di Montalcino is a striking wine that shows uncompromising varietal pureness, albeit in a most concentrated and elaborate form. This is what great Sangiovese is all about. There’s so much happening on the nose and the wine brings you to cherry, spice, licorice, cured meat, pressed rose and grilled meat in equal measure. No one element overpowers the next. The mouthfeel is also tight and bright with the kind of fruit intensity that promises long cellar aging.
2010 E. Guigal Ermitage Ex-Voto Blanc, Rhone, 750ml Rated 100 by Robert Parker
Vivid yellow-gold. Intense, incisive pear and nectarine aromas are brightened by chalky minerals and deepened by suggestions of beeswax, vanilla and iodine. Penetrating orchard fruit and honeydew flavors stain the palate, picking up bitter lemon zest and floral qualities with air.
2012 Schrader Cellars CCS Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley, 750ml Rated 100 by Robert Parker The 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon CCS Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard is gorgeous. Often one of the more open-knit, silky wines in the range, the CCS plays in an upper register of sweet perfumed aromatics, bright red fruit and super-finessed tannins. A long, polished finish rounds things out in style.
2014 Morlet Family Vineyards La Proportion Doree, Sonoma County, 750ml Rated 100 by Robert Parker
The wine is absolutely out of this world. With a light greenish gold color and a killer nose of lanolin, caramelized citrus, honeysuckle, orange marmalade and candle wax, the wine displays great acidity, a magnificent, massive, full-bodied mouthfeel, and seems to come across like a Sonoma County version of a dry Haut Brion blanc. This is singular wine - profound, compelling, whatever!

4. 2012 North Valley “Origin” Pinot Noir Eola-Amity Hills, 750ml Rated 92 by Robert Parker
Deep red. Broad, deeply perfumed black raspberry, cola and lavender aromas are lifted by a peppery nuance. Smooth and supple on the palate, offering gently sweet dark berry and plum flavors, plus a bracing kick of white pepper that provides cut to the back half. The clinging, gently tannic finish leaves sweet dark berry notes behind.
5. 2012 North Valley “Origin” Pinot Noir Yamhill-Carlton, 750ml Rated 93 by Robert Parker
Full red. Sexy spice- and mineral-accented red fruit and floral pastille scents are tweaked by a touch of blood orange. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, harmonious in the mouth with a keen line of acidity. 8. 2010 Clos de l’Oratoire des Papes CDP, 750ml Rated 92 by Wine Spectator
This almost gushes forth, with very ripe plum, blackberry and boysenberry fruit, but there’s ganache and charcoal riding in quickly behind it for balance, and the finish has ample grip, with a singed apple wood note hanging in the background. Best from 2014 through 2026.
9. 2011 Casa Ferreirinha Qinta da Leda, Douro, 750ml Rated 95 by Wine Advocate
“...a terrific vintage...It is primarily a Touriga Franca/Touriga Nacional blend (45-40), with Tinta Roriz filling out the rest... as elegant as the 2010, but perhaps even better-balanced and more concentrated...It is on the short list for the best of the recent string of winners.”

New World Syrah 1. 2 006 Clarendon Hills Piggott Range Syrah, McLaren Vale, 750ml Rated 98 by Robert Parker

The 2006 Descendant is sourced from a single vineyard and co-fermented with 8% Viognier. It was aged for 18 months in seasoned French oak. Opaque purple-colored, it emits an expressive, sexy perfume of violets, wood smoke, black pepper, espresso, blueberry, and chocolate. Full-bodied, on the palate, this voluptuous effort has great concentration with a noticeable uplift from the Viognier, tons of spicy black fruits, enough ripe tannin to evolve for a decade, and 60-second finish.
3. 2009 Alban Vineyards Reva Estate Syrah, Edna Valley, 750ml Rated 97 by Wine Advocate
Inky purple. Deeply scented, spicy and smoky aromas of ripe cherries and cassis are lifted by notes of black pepper, Indian spices and a dusty herbal quality. Shows impressive depth and vivacity to its blueberry and blackcurrant flavors, which are sharpened by juicy acidity. Supple tannins come on late, adding focus to a sweet, impressively long finish. This sexy syrah is surprisingly approachable but clearly has the material for a positive evolution in the cellar.
4. 2010 Joseph Phelps Vineyards Syrah, Napa Valley, 750ml Rated 91 by Stephen Tanzer Good bright medium ruby. Exhilarating, sweet aromas of black raspberry, bacon fat and flowers reminded me of Cote-Rotie. Mint, sweet spices and red berries are some of the many notes that are woven together in a fabric of nearly indescribable elegance.
4. NV Cedric Bouchard Roses de Jeanne Blanc de Noirs Cote de Val Vilaine, Champagne, 750ml Rated 92 by Wine Advocate
Superbly clear and aromatic on the nose, with ripe and fresh fruit flavors, this is a dry, fresh, super precise and mineral Pinot Noir. It has flavors of red apple skins, and a long and purely mineral finish. Still very young, but promising.
5. NV Bollinger Brut Special Cuvée, 750ml Rated 92 by James Suckling
The NV Brut Special Cuvée is fabulous. Hints of pears, pastry crust and hazelnut lead to an expansive core of fruit. There is plenty of the signature Bollinger oxidative style in this rich, enveloping Champagne.
6. NV Laurent-Perrier Brut Rose, 750ml Rated 96 by CG
The color is an intense orange-colored pink and the nose offers beautifully subtle, but also deep, intense flavors of ripe and macerated Pinot Noir and lemon. There is also great purity and finesse on the structured palate. The finish is fresh and reveals a perfect fruit.
7. NV Taittinger Brut Prestige Rose, 750ml Rated 94 by TP
It shows lovely length and focus in an understated style that is quite appealing. There is tons of depth to the fruit as the wine opens up in the glass.

1986 Chateau Mouton Rothschild, Pauillac 1986 Chateau Mouton Rothschild, Pauillac Rated 100 by Robert Parker
It has a powerful and intense bouquet as always: exemplary graphite and cedar scents, a touch of black pepper and incense. It seems to unfurl in the glass, like a motor revving its engine. The palate is beautifully balanced with its trademark firm tannic structure, a Mouton-Rothschild with backbone and masculinity. Layers of black fruit intermingling with mint and graphite, a hint of licorice emanating from the Merlot, gently fanning out and my God, it is incredibly long.

3. 1996 Chateau d’Yquem, Sauternes, 750ml Rated 96 by Wine Spectator 38
32nd Annual Rare & Fine Wine Auction
This leans toward the tropical side, with mango and guava notes out front, while maple, date, blood orange and citrus oil flavors fill in behind. The finish kicks into another gear, taking off with honeysuckle, orange blossom and frangipane accents. Has almost unbridled power today, while maintaining serious cut.
4. 2001 Chateau Rabaud-Promis, Sauternes, 750ml Rated 95 by Wine Spectator 5. 2003 Croft Vintage Port, Portugal, 750ml Rated 96 by Wine Spectator

6. 2005 Chateau Suduiraut Sauternes, 750ml Rated 97 by James Suckling
Medium yellow-gold. Incredibly sweet aromas of apricot, acacia honey and marzipan. Supersweet, round and fat, but with enough ripe acidity to leaven the wine’s huge impression of volume.
7. 2008 Chateau Rieussec Sauternes Grand Cru Classe, 750ml Rated 94 by Wine Enthusiast 8. 2009 Philippe Foreau Domaine du Clos Naudin Vouvray Moelleux Reserve, Loire, 750ml Rated 97 by Wine Advocate
Rich golden yellow. Expansive aromas of caramelized apricot, white peach, date, banana and butter cream are layered in the noble botrytis. Rich, spicy tropical fruits coat the palate, but a finely chiseled, chalky minerality keep this chenin blanc remarkably light on its feet.
9. 2011 Alois Kracher Chardonnay/Welschriesling Grande Cuvée TBA #6 Nouvelle Vague, 375ml Rated 95 by Wine Spectator 10. 1999 Chateau Pajzos Tokaji Aszu Esszenzia, 500ml Rated 95 by Wine Advocate
It has a very focused, quite “contained” bouquet of mandarin, marmalade and incense....The palate is very well-balanced... the acidity neatly offsetting the swathe of viscous fruit: mango, papaya, marmalade and quince...with a long fig and raisin finish that remarkably retains freshness and tension. Outstanding.

Inky ruby. Deeply pitched black and blue fruit aromas display very good clarity, picking up notes of star anise and smoky minerals with air. Supple and creamy on the palate, with intense blueberry and floral pastille flavors given lift by juicy acidity. Clings with strong tenacity on the smoothly tannic finish.

7. 4a 2014 Brian Arden Sangiovese, 750ml 8. 4b 2012 Marchesi Antinori Tignanello Toscana IGT, Tuscany, 750ml Rated 96 by James Suckling
The 2012 Tignanello is deep, rich and voluptuous, yet also retains a distinct element of classicism in its focused, midweight structure. Dark red cherry, pomegranate, kirsch, spice, tobacco and menthol open up in the glass, but only reluctantly. Firm veins of tannin and pulsating acidity give the wine its sense of energy and verticality.
9. 5a 2012 Corison Kronos Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley, 750ml Rated 95 by Antonio Galloni
The 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Kronos presents a more intensely mineral and savory profile than the Napa Valley, with the opulence of the vintage pushed more into the background. Dried flowers, iron, spice, leather and mint add nuance.

Ten Year Retrospective (2007) 1. 2 007 Bergstrom Pinot Noir De Lancellotti, Chehalem Mountains, 750ml Rated 92 by Robert Parker
A great achievement for us in that it could easily be confused for a young Barolo or even a Burgundy from the Cote-de-Nuits, but even better than that...it’s from Oregon! The almost electric violet-ruby colored wine has excellent aromas of marionberry and wild blackberries with some baking spices like cinnamon, vanilla, clove, nutmeg and incense. The attack is pure and driven, with bright fruit flavors and great lithe texture which is focused and mineralbased. The finish has a long juicy acid structure with fine grained tannins. This wine will be amazing after 2-3 years of ageing and will drink well into 2020+ if cellared carefully.
2. 2007 Caymus Cabernet Sauvignon, 750ml Rated 92 by Wine Spectator
Ripe and fleshy, with rich plum, wild berry, spice and savory herb notes that are complex, full-bodied and expansive on the palate, ending with firm tannins and a dash of espresso.
3. 2007 Clos des Papes Châteauneuf-du-Pape, 750ml Rated 100 by Wine Advocate
One of the great vintages from this estate...delivers everything you could want from a wine. Full-bodied, intense and beautifully concentrated, with plenty of muscle and depth, it shows the hallmark elegance and purity of the estate, with sensational notes of kirsch liqueur, raspberries, incense, smoked meats and Asian spices.
4. 2007 Emiliana Coyam, Colchaga Valley, 750ml Rated 90 by Wine Spectator
Coyam is intensely violet-red in color. The nose expresses a harmony of ripe dark fruit, berries, blackcurrant, and forest fruits that delicately intermingle with the oak to deliver soft mineral notes, toffee, and chocolate. The palate offers a pleasing balance of volume and balance, very good body, smooth, well-rounded tannins, and a long finish, showing its character and personality. Recommended for long aging.
5. 2007 Far Niente Estate Bottled Cabernet Sauvignon, Oakville, 750ml Rated 93 by Robert Parker

7. 2007 J.L. Chave Hermitage Farconnet, 750ml Rated 90 by Wine Spectator
This shows mature notes, with espresso and warm cocoa melding into the mulled plum and blackberry fruit, while sauvage notes of tapenade, charcoal and bay leaf fill in on the finish. An underlying iron accent creeps along throughout.
8. 2007 Ledson Cepage, Sonoma County, 750ml Rated 93 by Wine Enthusiast
A beautiful Bordeaux blend, soft and intricately detailed, with something for everyone. Fruit fans will like the array of blackberries, cherries and raspberries, and oak lovers will appreciate the sweet, caramelized smokiness. The tannins are rich and furry, and the finish lasts for a long time.

Then suave, sweet, creamy and full in the middle, with piquant spicy, peppery, herbal complexity giving this a Bordeaux-like quality.
11. 2007 Rasa Vineyards ‘QED’ Red, Walla Walla Valley, 750ml Rated 94 by Wine Spectator

Perhaps because of that, it possesses more minerality along with licorice, black currant, and cedar wood notes. Dense, full-bodied, rich, and impressively endowed, with good acidity, tannin, and extract, this 600-case offering will be at its best between 2009-2018.

a sexy, supple and textured effort that has lots of jammy dark fruits, licorice and toasted spice. Surprisingly textured and rounded, it has terrific purity and a hard-to-resist personality.
Moderately light cherry red color in the glass. The aromas of red cherry, baking spice and sandalwood draw you into the glass. This wine delivers more flavor than the light color would suggest. There is a earthy and feral side to the black cherry fruit, herb and mushroom flavors. The mid palate fullness is pleasant, the tannins are well-matched, and the wine finishes in classy style with panache.

100 Point Wines 1. 1994 Fonseca Vintage Port Rated 100 by Wine Spectator
Hold on to your hat. This is the best Fonseca since 1977, and it’s probably even better than that classic vintage--more like the breathtaking 1948. Mind-blowing, with masses of color, aroma and fruit flavor. Smells like fermenting berries, boasting loads of crushed grape, violet and berry character. Big, full-bodied and very sweet, with tons of tannins and a sweet finish. Tannic and huge, it’s a long-term, great Port.

“...full-bodied, powerful..., concentrated, rich wines made from very old vines and tiny yields...I gave perfect scores to the prodigious 2007 and 2009, two of the greatest expressions of old vine Grenache from the province of Aragon that anyone could have desired...plenty of black raspberry, blackberry, kirsch and licorice characteristics as well as an undeniable minerality and precision that are remarkable given their full-bodied, massive concentration and intensity.”
4. 2014 Morlet Family Vineyards La Proportion Doree, 750ml Rated 100 by Robert Parker
This is singular wine profound, compelling, whatever!
5. 2013 Hidden Ridge Cabernet Impassable Mountain Reserve, 750ml Rated 100 by Wine Advocate
The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Impassable Mountain Reserve sounds relatively intimidating, but if you want a quintessential example of what perfection is in my business, taste this wine! Absolutely remarkable in every sense - the incredible pure aromatics of blue, red and black fruits, the minerality, the volcanic, earthy sweetness that emerges in a subtle fashion, the full-bodied opulence, the staggering finish of more than a minute, and its unreal concentration certainly make this one of the most compelling and profound Cabernet Sauvignons I have ever tasted, and the first perfect wine of 2016. This should be nearly immortal, drinking well young, and for those with the patience and wisdom to wait 25-35 years, a legacy wine from Sonoma.
6. 2014 Bevan Tench Vineyard Proprietary Red EE, 750ml Rated 100 by Robert Parker
“...blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon and 35% Cabernet Franc...Only 220 cases...It has a compelling fragrance of spring flowers, blackberry and cassis, graphite, licorice and truffle. Vivid ruby. Musky red fruits, cherry, pipe tobacco and a hint of vanilla on the fragrant nose. Juicy and tightly focused, offering tangy raspberry and bitter cherry flavors and a touch of candied rose. Finishes on a tangy note, with a hint of blood orange, repeating florality and silky tannins coming up late.
2. 2004 LAN Rioja Edicion Limitada, 750ml Rated 96 by Wine Spectator
This powerful red is rich and thick on the palate, even syrupy, with ripe flavors of blueberry and cassis and plenty of espresso-scented oak. But it’s not jammy. Fresh and balanced, this carries its considerable alcohol with grace.
3. 2005 Bodegas y Vinedos Mancuso Vino de la Tierra Valdejalón Mancuso, 750ml Rated 96 by Wine Advocate
Aged for 14 months in new French oak, it offers up a superb bouquet of toasty new oak, pencil lead, scorched earth, espresso, black cherry, and blackberry liqueur. Opulent, rich, and complex on the palate, this full-bodied wine has tons of flavor, nicely concealed ripe tannin, and a long, fruit-filled finish. 5. 2005 La Rioja Alta Gran Reserva, 750ml Rated 96 by Wine Advocate
The nose is very balsamic with notes of camphor, hints of mint, leather and hung game wrapped around a core of cherries in liqueur. Together it is balanced, subtle, truly elegant and classical.
6. 2006 Bodegas Muga Rioja Gran Reserva Prado Enea, 750ml Rated 96 by Wine Advocate
The 2006 Prado Enea is a phenomenal bottle of traditional Rioja at its best. The grapes are sourced from higher-altitude terraced plots where the climate is cooler and drier and the soils are rich in clay. This is a wine that is not automatically produced every year. The wine spends its elevage in oak containers of different size, origin and age for no less than three years. The nose is intoxicating with a superb mixture of tertiary and more primary aromas like old furniture, cloves, cracked pepper, incense and cigar ash plus cherries in liqueur (that Garnacha!). The palate is medium-bodied, with great freshness (Jorge Muga tells me the pH is stabilized with aging in barrel), acidity and balance, with a silky texture, ultra-fine tannins and great persistence and length. This wine feels younger than it is, and seems to be aging at a glacial pace. With the stuffing and balance it has this should make very old bones, and drink greatly throughout its life. Superb!
7. 2 006 Numanthia Toro Termanthia, 750ml Rated 96+ by Wine Advocate
The 2006 Termanthia has a ripe, vivacious bouquet of blackberry, mint, lavender and a hint of iodine/violets that is attractive but takes time to open. The palate is mediumbodied with rounded, supple tannins and crisp acidity. It has a honeyed tincture towards the finish even, though the harvest was actually earlier. This is the most mellifluous of the Termanthia wines, opulent but nicely controlled.

Blackberry, cranberry, coffee, toast and herbal notes mingle in this vibrant red. Light, firm tannins and fresh, racy acidity impart balance and drive. Not a big wine, but has focus and depth.
11. 2012 Hacienda Monasterio Ribera del Duero, 750ml Rated 94 by Wine Advocate
There are no traces of the barriques and the nose took me to the Riberas of yesteryear, with some subtle rusticity; it’s ripe without excess and there’s good balance between fruit, spices and perhaps something earthy. The palate is extremely balanced, medium-bodied with very fine tannins, tasty, approachable and long. This could very well be the best crianza ever produced at Monasterio.

Noticeably more youthful than the classic cuvée...Currants, black cherries, new leather and wild herb characteristics all emerge from this full-bodied, seamless and elegant Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Much more civilized and polish than in its youth, it’s fully mature, but one of the more youthful, vibrant wines of the vintage today.
2. 2000 Domaine du Clos du Caillou “Réserve les Clos du Caillou” Châteauneuf-du-Pape, 750ml Rated 99 by Robert Parker Possibly the wine of the vintage is the 2000 Châteauneuf-duPape Reserve Le Clos du Cailloux. I tasted this wine four times from bottle, and it has blown away some tough competition. A wealth of fruit, power, and balance, amazing purity, and a sumptuous, 65-second finish are the stuff of legends.
3. 2001 Chateau de Saint Cosme Gigondas Valbelle, Rhone, 750ml Rated 93 by Vinous 52
32nd Annual Rare & Fine Wine Auction
Deep, burnished aromas of plum, strawberry, chocolate, wood smoke and pepper. Superconcentrated and lush but bright, with juicy flavors of plum, raspberry, strawberry and pepper...Has a deeply smoky quality bordering on exotic and a very suave texture... a very long, vinous aftertaste.
4. 2001 E. Guigal Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Rhone, 750ml Rated 93 by Wine Spectator
Old-fashioned, this full-bodied traditional wine seduces with its decadent game, saddle-leather, plum and sautéed wild mushroom aromas. No hint of fancy oak, just a mouthful of Châteauneuf character that swirls around to a long, sweet finish.
5. 2 005 Domaine du Vieux Telegraphe Châteauneuf-du-Pape, 750ml Rated 95 by Robert Parker
Dense ruby/purple-colored with an exquisite perfume of black raspberries, kirsch, ground pepper, and incense, this full-bodied, powerful, concentrated wine reveals fabulous purity as well as a finish that lasts over 45 seconds.
6. 2005 Le Vieux Donjon Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Rhone, 750ml Rated 95 by Wine Spectator
Vieux Donjon has produced a classic Châteauneuf-du-Pape in 2005, and it has the focused, structured feel of the vintage, yet avoids the harsh tannin that’s found in a lot of cuvées. Exhibiting impressive notes of peppered meats, tapenade, sweet spice, iron and garrigue, with a core of sweet Grenache fruit, this beauty is medium to full-bodied, concentrated and textured on the palate, with superb overall balance.
7. 2007 Domaine du Vieux Telegraphe Châteauneuf-du-Pape, 750ml Rated 96+ by Robert Parker
Its deep ruby color is accompanied by a superb nose of nori seaweed wrappers, licorice, pepper, tobacco leaf, and gobs of sweet black cherry and black currant fruit.
8. 2009 Delas Frères Côte-Rôtie Seigneur de Maugiron, 750ml Rated 93 by Robert Parker The 2009 Cote Rotie Seigneur de Maugiron exhibits lots of spice, raspberry, cassis, licorice, incense, Christmas fruitcake and fried bacon notes. The smokiness, seductiveness, lusciousness and medium to full-bodied, round, generous texture make for an endearing, sexy Cote Rotie to enjoy over the next 10-15 years. There is not much of the Cote Rotie La Landonne (approximately 500 cases produced), but it ranks alongside the great La Landonnes made by Marcel and Philippe Guigal.
9. 2010 Delas Frères Hermitage Domaine des Tourettes, 750ml Rated 96 by Wine Advocate A wine of great intensity, it possesses an inky/purple color, plenty of creme de cassis, licorice, lead pencil shavings, camphor, flint and barbecue smoke characteristics.
10. 2010 Le Vieux Donjon Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Rhone, 750ml Rated 96 by Wine Spectator
This takes a decidedly old-school approach with its very distinctive bay leaf and juniper notes leading the way, along with roasted mesquite and alder wood. The core of steeped black currant, roasted plum and blackberry fruit waits in reserve while the long, ganache- and tar-filled finish has nice rugged grip, with a peppery echo. Should cellar wonderfully.
11. 2012 Chateau de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Rhone, 750ml Rated 96 by Robert Parker
Opaque ruby. Potent, mineral-laced raspberry and cherry aromas are complicated by suave floral and spice qualities, picking up white pepper and cola accents with air. Seamless, round and sweet on the palate, offering intense red berry preserve and floral pastille flavors with a touch of allspice. Finishes sappy and precise, with velvety tannins and a late jolt of cherry compote.
12. 2012 La Ferme du Mont Châteauneuf-du-Pape, 750ml Rated 93 by Robert Parker Donated by: Maria & Daniel Bleier, Susan & Jerry Gatlin, Cathia & Tom Goebel, Louis Kowalski, Michele & Harvey Kronberg, Steve Tipton, Twin Liquors Estimated Value: $1,075
3. 2007 Robert Mondavi Winery Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley, 750ml Rated 95 by Robert Parker
Dark red-ruby. Very expressive, ripe, slightly inky aromas of blueberry, camphor and licorice, plus a hint of sweet butter; distinctly warm but not roasted.
4. 2008 Bond Estates Vecina Red, Napa Valley, 750ml Rated 96 by Stephen Tanzer
Good full ruby. Highly aromatic nose combines dark fruits, dried herbs, violet and forest floor spices. Explosively sweet and deep, with a spicy core of dark fruit flavors that fans out on the back half to saturate the palate. Finishes with strong but lush tannins and captivating violet lift. Remarkably horizontal for a cabernet-based wine from this vintage.
5. 2009 Anakota Helena Montana Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon, Knights Valley, 750ml Rated 95 by Robert Parker
This 2009 is built like an old style Bordeaux with lots of red and black fruits, graphite and noticeable oak.
6. 2009 Chappellet Cabernet Sauvignon Pritchard Hill, Napa Valley, 750ml Rated 96 by Wine Advocate
The 2009 is all about promise and potential. The wine possesses stunning depth and concentration, with fabulous balance and tons of personality. The only thing it needs is time. This dark, brooding Cabernet Sauvignon is a lot to look forward to. The 2009 is 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Petite Verdot and 10% Malbec. Anticipated maturity: 2019-2034.
7. 2009 Pahlmeyer Proprietary Red, 750ml Rated 94 by Wine Spectator
Lot #69
Iconic California Reds 1. 2 002 Beringer Vineyards Private Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley, 750ml Rated 95 by Robert Parker
Good full ruby-red. Sexy aromas of currant and dark chocolate. Compellingly sweet and densely packed, with lovely vinosity giving shape to the flavors of dark berries, cedar and minerals.
2. 2002 Silver Oak Cabernet Alexander Valley, 750ml Rated 93 by Wine Advocate
The 2002 Cabernet Sauvignon is richer and fuller bodied than the 2001, with a more muscular structural overlay. Less evolved and not displaying the pungent, spicy notes of the 2001, it offers loads of new oak, cassis, dried herb, chocolate, and fruitcake notes. Give it another 1-2 years of bottle age, and drink it over the following 10-14 years.
The 2009 Red Blend emerges from the glass with freshly cut flowers, mint, spices, minerals and pure, crystalline, dark red fruit. This is a gorgeous wine endowed with remarkable finesse. The style is weightless, elegant and totally refined.
8. 2009 Shafer Relentless, 750ml Rated 93+ by Robert Parker
The 2009 Relentless (Syrah/Petite Sirah) wraps around the palate with serious depth. Dark cherries, grilled herbs and menthol take shape in the glass followed by sweet floral notes that add lift on the finish. A rich, round and voluptuous wine, the 2009 impresses for its overall sense of harmony. It isn’t terribly varietal, but is quite pretty if taken on its own terms. The 2009 is 82% Syrah and 18% Petite Sirah. Personally, I prefer the subsequent vintages, where Syrah plays more of a leading role. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2024.

A rich and creamy textured red, this fans out to offer a complex mix of dark berry, graphite, cedar and loamy earth, gaining depth and persistence on the finish.
