AUCTION CATALOG BENEFITING THE MENDOCINO COAST DISTRICT HOSPITAL
Foundation Welcome We are excited and honored to welcome you to Winesong 2017. Whether it’s your first visit or you have been with us for many years, we are grateful you are joining us on this special day where fun and philanthropy come together. Produced by the Hospital Foundation for the benefit of Mendocino Coast District Hospital, Winesong is the largest fundraising event in the county and the largest single source of funds for our donations to the hospital. Proceeds from Winesong and gifts to the Foundation are used for capital improvements and equipment purchases. Planning for this day happens throughout the year. Our Foundation Board and staff are aided by a loyal corps of volunteers, most of whom you will see in the Gardens today. These volunteers, many of them Hospital employees and physicians, are part of the strong commitment this community has to our Hospital. Your generosity over the past 33 years has provided lifesaving and life enhancing equipment that is absolutely essential to the health of this community and its many visitors. Thanks to your support we have cutting edge diagnostic imaging capability in our Hospital and stellar laboratory, cardiology, and oncology services, among others. Along with our entire community, we thank you for your support and invite you to enjoy the beautiful Mendocino Coast on this day of good food, outstanding wines and lasting friendships. Enjoy the Day! Sincerely, The Board & Staff of the Mendocino Coast Hospital Foundation

The Mendocino Coast Hospital Foundation is a stand-alone 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization dedicated to providing support for essential equipment, capital projects and core services that help our Hospital meet the needs of the community and the many visitors our area attracts. A gift to the Mendocino Coast Hospital Foundation is an investment in the health of our community. iii
Hospital Welcome On behalf of the Mendocino Coast District Hospital Board of Directors, Employees, Medical Staff Providers, and Volunteers, we are honored to have you as our guests! We welcome back our long-time supporters, and greet those of you visiting for the first time. While you enjoy this special day, please know that the generous support you are providing ensures that our local hospital and medical services will continue to be available to everyone who lives, works, or vacations on the Mendocino Coast. These medical services are vital to our community. Winesong proceeds fund equipment that is absolutely essential to the health and well-being of this community. Your support last year, during the Fund-A-Need, purchased 100% of the equipment costs to provide replacement of our aged Telemetry/Monitoring system. We are pleased to share some positive news and accomplishments from this past year: • MCDH achieved another year of excellent results in Patient Safety, Never Events, and Clinical Outcomes. We were surveyed by the California Department of Public Health (Hospital License), surveyed by The Joint Commission (Laboratory Department) and did an outstanding job meeting the numerous licensure/accreditation requirements during these surveys. • MCDH established a Community Health Needs Assessment Plan by initiating a population health program to reduce the incidence of three cancers in our District. By implementing processes to improve screening frequency and developing a team approach to the patient clinic visit, our plan will significantly reduce negative cancer outcomes. • MCDH achieved record patient volumes at the North Coast Family Health Center (NCFHC) and in our Surgery Department. The growth of the Immediate Care Department at the NCFHC and the growth in Pain Management procedures in the Operating Room procedures.
iv
• MCDH produced another year of positive income. In light of an economic climate in our District, where 80% of patient revenues do not cover the patient cost of care, we worked hard to generate a Total Profit Margin of $401,027. We hope you enjoy the day’s activities knowing your generosity truly makes an enormous difference and is valued by those of us in the community. Thank you for being with us today, Bob Edwards, Chief Executive Officer Mendocino Coast District Hospital

Auctioneer: DawnMarie Kotsonis DawnMarie Kotsonis ignites the auction stage with her passion and heartfelt commitment to the organizations she serves. As the Development Officer of a large Southern California hospital, she experienced first-hand the challenges of fundraising and, unknowingly, began the building blocks of her true calling. Her introduction to the world of charity auctions began in the 1980’s while running a successful commercial auction firm. She was asked to help raise funds on behalf of cystic fibrosis research and it was a very personal request. The disease claimed the lives of both her nephew and her best friend. It did not take long for her to realize that working on behalf of nonprofits was far more fulfilling than any commercial auction career would ever be. She also recognized that her background in Development gave her unique experience and insight into the world of fundraising. So she abandoned the commercial side and never looked back. Since then, DawnMarie has presided over countless record-breaking charity auctions nationwide including a number on the Wine Spectator’s Top 10. The dollars she has raised are in the tens of millions and the number grows every week. DawnMarie is based in Los Angeles and welcomes all inquiries. She is at www.gavelgirl.com.

Auctioneer: Richard Pio Roda This is Rich’s third Winesong and we couldn’t be happier! Richard has been a professional auctioneer for over 20 providing his auctioneering skills and expertise to fundraise for numerous educational, charitable and nonprofit organizations throughout the world. A brief list of the organizations Richard has assisted include the San Francisco Child Abuse Prevention Center, the Reed Schools Foundation, the Napa Valley Education Foundation, the Philippine International Aid Foundation, Japan TELL Foundation, Asia Pacific Fund, ParentsCAN, the Foundation Fighting Blindness, The Nueva School, and Nimbus Arts. Richard has appeared on national TV as one of the lead auctioneers for Home & Garden TV’s (HGTV) hit show “Flip it to Win It”. Richard’s philanthropic and civic involvement includes service on the Board of Directors for the San Francisco Child Abuse Prevention Center, and on the City and County of San Francisco Human Rights Commission, where he was appointed by Mayor Edwin Lee to serve as a Commissioner in 2012.

2017 Artist of the Year: Rebecca Johnson Rebecca Johnson grew up in an art centric family in rural Hopewell, New Jersey. Her parents were designers, artists and art educators. Life is art was the family credo. This philosophy enriched and continues to inform Rebecca’s art and career. As a young artist Rebecca embraced the path of the successful professional. She received her BFA from Tyler School of Art and her MFA from the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. She studied bronze casting at the Johnson Atelier in New Jersey and stone carving in quarries in Vermont. Grants, fellowships, shows in galleries and museums, commissions, critical acclaim and teaching positions at Dartmouth and Kenyon Colleges distinguished her career. A fulcrum of change occurred when The British American Arts Council awarded her a three-month fellowship to work in Northwest Wales. In this land of stonewalls, craggy mountains, wild coast and rich folkloric history Rebecca’s ideas gestated. Time and solitude created space for her to thoroughly see and imbibe the light, color and form of the land. Her exterior and interior visions integrated and enhanced each other. Rebecca discovered a new degree of courage and conviction to follow her work to its true ultimate power, rural nature and a poetic vision. Rebecca returned home to Philadelphia where her next project was the transformation of a cavernous train depot into a showroom for Material Culture, in Philadelphia. The completion of rich earth tone and midnight blue murals, one hundred feet long and thirty feet high, reassured her a personal metamorphosis was also possible. She packed her tools, cats and dog and headed west. Rebecca now lives and works in Northern California, Mendocino County, a place of raw elemental forces. Her studio is in the Anderson Valley. Inside a large renovated barn she creates paintings. The doors of the studio open to a hillside meadow filled with her stone sculpture. The calm beauty of this rural place resonates from her work. xii
Our Honorees! Dan Berger has been a wine
columnist since 1976 and has resided in Sonoma County since 1986. Today, in addition to his privately published weekly wine commentary, Dan Berger’s Vintage Experiences, Dan writes a nationally syndicated wine column as well as articles for many publications. Mr. Berger was the full-time wine columnist and reporter for the Los Angeles Times from 1988 to 1996. His Los Angeles Times column was carried nationally by the Los Angeles Times-Washington Post News Service. During that time, he commuted from Sonoma County to Los Angeles, so he could maintain his residence and affiliations in wine country. He is a judge at many wine competitions, including numerous shows in Australia, as well as competitions in Slovenia, Belgium, Germany, Canada, and across the United States, judging in at least a dozen competitions each year. He also has coordinated international wine competitions for the past 35 years. Dan Berger’s International Wine Competition began in 2016 became one the nation’s largest competitions to judge ciders, with more than 240 submissions. Dan is a speaker at wine symposiums and universities on topics such as wine marketing, trends in the industry, regional character of wines, and the healthful benefits of moderate consumption. He also speaks to assorted groups interested in learning about wine, many of them unrelated to the wine business. And he also is an adjunct professor teaching professional wine courses at Santa Rosa Junior College. Among the honors presented to him are the Wines and Vines Magazine award of excellence as Wine Writer of the Year, the Father Junipero Serra award for contributions to the wine industry, presented by the California Wine Patrons of Los Angeles, the Wine Literary Award by the Wine Appreciation Guild. He is also a member of the Hall of Fame of the New York Wine Writers’ Circle. xiii
Additional organizations that have honored him include the UC Davis. Department of Viticulture and Enology and the Academy of Wine Communications. His books include “Beyond the Grapes: An Inside Look at Napa Valley” and “Beyond the Grapes: An Inside Look at Sonoma County,” and he has contributed to other wine books including the University of California/ Sotheby Book of California Wine and the Oxford Companion to the Wines of North America. He was also the author and project director for the Reader’s Digest’s book, North American Wine Routes. 40 years ago, George Rose began his long career as a Over
photographer. Throughout the years, he has traveled a long and winding road through the elite world of popular music, film, news, politics, and sports, eventually leading him to California’s Wine Country. During his prolific years as a Los Angeles-based photojournalist, Rose developed a remarkable and historic body of photographic work focused on popular culture. In the 1970s and 80s, Rose served six years as a staff photographer for the Los Angeles Times. His independent assignments, focused primarily on the entertainment industry, have been published in USA Today, Time, Newsweek and Rolling Stone. Images from this era are collected in the 2008 book entitled Hollywood, Beverly Hills & Other Perversities published by Ten Speed Press. Over 40 vintage prints of his are in the permanent collection of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum. From 1982 to 1996, Rose prowled the sidelines of the San Francisco 49ers and Oakland/Los Angeles Raiders games as a photographer for the National Football League. Thousands of these images have been published in officially sanctioned NFL books, calendars, trading cards and game programs.
xiv
Rose co-owned and co-published the Mendocino Grapevine, an award-winning Northern California weekly newspaper based in Ukiah. It was during this period that he became friendly with the Fetzer family (owners of Fetzer Vineyards), planting the seeds of a future career in wine. Despite the rigors of publishing a newspaper, Rose maintained his close relationship with USA Today and a handful of other national publications throughout the 1980s. For the past 25 years, Rose was a wine industry executive communications director at four successful wine companies: Fetzer Vineyards, Allied Domecq Wines USA, Kendall-Jackson, and J Vineyards & Winery. During this time, he continued to pursue his passion of photography. His vineyard photos have been used in numerous publications and calendars throughout the world of wine, and in 2007, Chronicle Books published a collection of those images in a book entitled “The Art of Terroir.” In 2014, his book, Down To Earth: A Seasonal Tour of Wine Sustainability in California, with author Janet Fletcher, was published by the Wine Institute. “VINEYARD Sonoma County,” his latest book project, is scheduled for a fall 2017 release. In 2015, Rose moved to Santa Barbara County’s Santa Ynez Valley. Much of his time is devoted to documenting the natural environment of the county as well as top vineyard estates up and down the coast of California. He is also a contributing photographer with Getty Images.
Nils Venge is universally regarded
as one of the foremost pioneers of the Napa Valley wine industry. Born to Danish immigrants, Venge’s exposure to wine came at an early age: his parents operated a wine and liquor import and distribution company in Southern California. Venge continued his pursuit of wine at the University of California in Davis where he earned a BS in Viticulture in 1967.
xv
Following a tour of duty in Vietnam as a Navy Reservist, Venge moved to the Napa Valley to pursue his interest in winemaking. In the subsequent years, Venge worked for the notable wineries Charles Krug, Sterling, Villa Mount Eden and Groth. During his tenure at Groth, Venge became the first American winemaker to receive a perfect 100 point rating from Wine Critic Robert Parker Jr. The 1985 Groth Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon catapulted Venge to a venerated position in the California wine industry. Nils Venge continues to produce outstanding wines at his Oakville facility, Saddleback Cellars. Rustic and modest, Saddleback Cellars takes its name from Saddleback Mountain located in Orange County, California where Nils was born and raised. Established in 1976, the first vintage was released in 1982 and we became a bonded winery one year later. The winery is owned and operated by Nils Venge and his family. There are 17 acres of prime Oakville fruit on property. Saddleback Cellars is proud of its diminutive stature and being one of the ’boutique’ wineries in the Napa Valley. Nils Venge has earned a place in the halls of lore and tradition in the Napa Valley, where he is considered to have the biggest hands and one of the best winemaking instincts. He continues to receive awards and high scores from reputable wine journals at his family winery, Saddleback Cellars, located in Oakville, California.

Les Cailloux – Chateauneuf-du-Pape – Lucien & Andre Brunel
Domaine Pierre Usseglio Cuvee Mon Aieul made its debut in 1998 which makes this collection truly exceptional. Most of the fruit comes from old vine, low yielding, Grenache that was planted in 1926. The vines come from 3 separate vineyards that are located in three different parts of the appellation. The wine is usually produced from a blend of 95% old vine Grenache with 5% Syrah, although there are some vintages made with 100% Grenache. The fruit is 100% destemmed. The wine is aged for 14-16 months in concrete tanks before bottling. However, the Syrah can be aged in used, French oak barrels. Critical ratings for these wines are way at the high end. The vintages in this lot have the following rating from Robert Parker: 95, 97, 99, 98, 94, 94, 99 and 95. And, yes, this fabulous lot includes a 100 point wine. Domaine de la Janasse is a Châteauneuf-du-Pape producer owned and operated by the Sabon family. The 2007 is made from old vines, some of which are over 100 years old. A favorite of Robert Parker’s … this wine is rated 100 points in a magnum format. 100 points: c’est très bon, n’est pas?’ Les Cailloux owns 21 hectares of vines. 70% of their vines are planted to Grenache followed by 17% Mourvedre, 10% Syrah and 3% Cinsault. Some of their vines are among the oldest in Chateauneuf du Pape and the Grenache vines are close to 120 years old! The terroir is filled with loam, limestone, rock, stone and sandy soils. All vineyard practices include sustainable farming techniques. Many of their best parcels are located not far from Mont Redon. Opening Bid: $900

A DYNAMIC DUO A Donation From: Patricia & Joseph Harbison, III, Tom & Theresa Wajnert
This Lot Includes: 2006 Harbison Estate Wines Cabernet Sauvignon, etched, 3L 2005 Louis Jadot Montrachet Grand Cru, 3000ml
Only a magnanimous friendship shared between great people could produce a dynamic duo of this degree. The 2006 Harbison Estate Cab has a 97 point rating. Chocked full of violets and floral notes, it’s smooth and elegant with a fine balance of well-integrated black fruits and cocoa flavors. A round-mouth feel, deep color, excellent concentration and endlessly long finish make it a must have. This wine is 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc, and 5% Malbec. Per wine reviewer Anthony Dias Blue, “Harbison Napa Cabernet is the stuff of which cult wines are made – a great vintage, a few acres, a few barrels, and Oakville fruit near Dalla Valle and next to Screaming Eagle.” Adding to the awe of this bottle…it’s 1 of only 6! The other half of this incredible duo is the 2005 Louis Jadot Montrachet, rating 95 points from Allen Meadows of Burghound. Per Meadows, “this wine is not to be missed! Moderate oak frames a reserved white flower and acacia blossom aroma. With spiced apple, honey and hazelnut that introduce the rich, round, and sumptuous full-bodied flavors, this wine possesses a suave mouth-feel due to the dry
extract which confers an almost thick, but not heavy palate impression on the impossible persistent finish. This wine is intense and ready to drink now!” About the Harbisons & Wajnerts: In 1998, Joe and Pat Harbison released their first eponymous wine which was bottled in large format bottles and then donated to children’s charities to grant wishes, provide shelter, education, medical care, art experiences, athletics, and other worthwhile causes. After attending Winesong in its second or third year, Pat and Joe became staunch supporters and were highly productive and generous Winesong Auction Chairs for the 30th Anniversary of Winesong in 2014. Founding Trustees of the illustrious Naples (FL) Winter Wine Festival, Tom and Theresa Wajnert were introduced to Winesong by their good friends Pat and Joe. Tom and Theresa own TNT Vineyards, which they started in 2002. TNT Vineyards, carrying the Kiss Ridge label, is where they grow old vine Cabernet Sauvignon (planted in 1971) and contemporary Cabernet Franc and Malbec. Adding to the serendipity of TNT Vineyards with their Kiss Ridge label…it sits on Diamond Mountain!

LYNCH-BAGES AT ITS BEST A Donation From: Meredythe & Clayt Daley, Jr.
This Lot Includes: 1982 Château Lynch-Bages - Grand Cru - St. Julien 1985 Château Lynch-Bages - Grand Cru - St. Julien 1989 Château Lynch-Bages - Grand Cru - St. Julien 1990 Château Lynch-Bages - Grand Cru - St. Julien 2000 Château Lynch-Bages - Grand Cru - St. Julien 2003 Château Lynch-Bages - Grand Cru - St. Julien
This Chateau’s reputation as a top quality wine producer took off in 1945 after a series of exceptional vintages. Since then, Lynch-Bages has continued to produce excellent wines, even during years considered difficult in the Bordeaux region. These six highly rated vintages of Lynch-Bages practically went off the charts. Parker rated both the 1989 and 1990 in the mid-90s and the 2000 was rated 97. The 2003, a massive wine, earned 95 points. Clayt adds, “I believe the 1985 was The Wine Spectator’s wine of the year.” Chateau Lynch-Bages’ distinctive character combines structure, finesse and elegance, offering generous aromas in its youth and developing deeper complexities with bottle age. The wine’s deep color and tannic backbone have become part of its signature style. Director JeanMichel Cazes has worked hard to develop and refine the wine’s supple and smooth structure over the years. Opening Bid: $700
BARN SONG A Donation From: Winesong 2017 Artist of the Year Rebecca Johnson
This Lot Includes: “Barn Song” an original 30” x 30” x 2” Bas Relief by Artist Rebecca Johnson, signed by the artist
Fine artist Rebecca Johnson has put her incredible talents to work creating a one-of-a-kind piece for Winesong. This piece is a first for Winesong in that it’s a Bas Relief (versus a painting). A Bas Relief combines sculpture and painting, with the distinction that the sculpture adheres to the painting. Rebecca created Barn Song using acrylic paint, salvaged barn wood, and plaster on a birch plywood panel. Stunning in its simplicity, the more you look at Barn Song, the more mesmerized you become! Rebecca Johnson grew up in an art centric family in rural Hopewell, New Jersey. Her parents were designers, artists and art educators. “Life is art” was the family credo. This philosophy enriched and continues to inform Rebecca’s art and career.

Pahlmeyer’s Proprietary Red is the winery’s raison d’etre. “All I wanted to do was to create my own ‘California Mouton’ – a rich, powerful Napa Valley Bordeaux blend, a wine that would drop wine lovers to their knees,” says Jayson Pahlmeyer. 1986 Pahlmeyer Proprietary Red was the realization of Jayson’s dream. Anointed 94 points by Robert Parker, it was the first of an extraordinary legacy of critically acclaimed wines. Pahlmeyer Proprietary Red is a classic Napa Valley Bordeaux blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Malbec. Each variety is harvested and held separately throughout fermentation and barrel aging. The lots are aged an average of 18 months in French oak Bordeaux barrels, blended through a meticulous, time-honored artisanal process, and bottled without filtering or fining. Produced in limited quantities, the Proprietary Red is a wine of superb power and finesse. Properly cellared, Proprietary Red will evolve magnificently for at least 25 years. Opening Bid: $1000

Blending grapes from four estate vineyards, we are dedicated to crafting wines of refinement and elegance from a rich palette of terroir-inspired fruit. Reflecting the Anderson Valley’s unique sites and soils, these grapes create sublime and sophisticated Pinot Noir. To further enhance natural depth and complexity, former winemaker Michael Fay selected only a small percentage of the finest fruit for each vintage before applying small-lot, artisanal winemaking techniques.”

Perfect companions – as they are truly companion vineyards – this lot pairs verticals of a truly royal coupling. Chateau Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande is one of the jewels of Bordeaux. Often referred to as Chateau Pichon Lalande, this Grand Cru Pauillac is regarded by many as the top “Super Second”; a Second Growth with quality equaling that of the First Growths. While not as structured or tannic as comparable Pauillac, it often is among the most voluptuous and complex of any given vintage. This spectacular 17-bottle Chateau Pichon Lalande collection encompasses vintages from 1975 through 2000 and includes all of the estate’s best wines from this era. The classic 1982 – which received a perfect 100 points from The Wine Advocate – is included, as are the 1985, 1986, 1996 and 2000, which received 96 points. All of the wines in this Chateau Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande collection are mature and ready to drink. Pichon Baron, as collectors like to call this famous chateau, produces rich, full bodied, spicy, concentrated, tannic and elegant Bordeaux wine. The vineyard is situated at the southern end of Pauillac, bordering Saint-Julien and across the road from Château Latour. In the top vintages the wines from this Chateau are known to age and improve for decades. Included in this extraordinary lot are all of the outstanding vintages over the last 25 years. This chateau has clearly earned its “super second” pedigree as many critics rank it with the very best such as Chateau Latour and Lafite. With so many great vintages starting with the 1982 - a personal favorite of Robert Parker, as was the 2000, the winning bidder will be challenged to pick a favorite in this lot. Both the 1989 and 1990 went off the charts, and the most recent vintages included here all rated in the high 90s. Described as “A spectacular effort,” the 2000 Pichon Baron was rated 96 points. HERRERO’S ‘GRAPE HARVEST’ A Donation From: Janet Herrero
This Lot Includes: Grape Harvest giclee on canvas (stretched & framed) by Lowell Herrero, 60” x 45”
Lowell Herrero’s Grape Harvest is an ode to the passion of hard work of grape harvesting. Grape Harvest depicts three figures taking the literal fruits of their labor across the field under a setting (or rising) sun. Lowell’s delightful, colorful take brings to life the joy and bounty of harvesting grapes. This limited edition giclee with its rich tones brings warmth and whimsy to the forefront. We are pleased to offer another wondrous work of art from the late Lowell Herrero, courtesy of his wife Janet. About Lowell Lowell Herrero moved into painting in 1966 after a successful career in graphic design…although the truth is, he first began creating art at the age of six! A move to Napa Valley in 2001 inspired paintings that celebrated nature’s beauty and abundance, and those who worked the land. While many of his works are reminiscent of particular places, what Lowell created was a kaleidoscope of all he saw in his own imagination.

WINESONG FUND-A-NEED Promoting Healing Through Comfort and Care
An essential piece of the healing process is comfort to the patient as well as love and support provided by family and friends. To provide a higher level of comfort and care benefiting patients and their loved ones, the 2017 FundA-Need goal is to upgrade patient rooms by providing major enhancements to the comfort and care of patients, patients’ families, and staff. The Mendocino Coast Hospital Foundation has provided a portion of funding towards this project. At present, the MCDH Medical-Surgical unit now has 6 new Hill-Rom VersaCare beds that are improving both patient safety and patient comfort. We still have several more patient rooms that are in critical need of new beds plus rooms in ICU. Important new comfort and safety features of the VersaCare beds include: • The beds can be easily moved from the normal flat position to an upright, seated positon, allowing the patient to exit the bed as if getting out of a chair. • The beds have built-in scales for obtaining patient weights with minimal disruption to the patient. This is a critical factor in medication dosing and monitoring fluid retention. • The new mattress improves patient comfort and helps in the process of preventing pressure ulcers. • The beds can be lowered to a height of 1½ feet off the ground. This eliminates the need for a step-stool for patients of short stature. This also reduces the risks of employee injuries.
• The beds have built-in alarms, which can be set for different areas of the bed. The alarm will immediately notify nursing staff if a patient is attempting to get out of bed without assistance, and is therefore at risk for falling. • The beds include “Brake Off” alarms. This is a safety measure to notify nursing staff if the bed’s braking system has not been set. Therefore greatly reducing the potential fall risk when the patient is entering or exiting the bed.
In addition to improving patient safety and comfort, the beds are easy for staff to move and operate, greatly reducing the possibilities of strains and other work-related injuries for medical staff. Other items needed to provide and promote comfort and healing are more comfortable seating for family members. We have learned that if comfortable seating is available, family members want to be close to their loved one. And we know patients recover more quickly when they are surrounded by loved ones, versus having them sit in a waiting area. For us to promote healing, this is also a critical need in our patient room improvement plan. Further, there are additional upgrades to patient rooms that directly benefit our patients, families and staff that are an essential piece of the healing process. The Hospital Foundation is committed to raising funds and we respectfully ask for your help in this important aspect of patient care.

IT’S GOOD TO BE THE KING A Donation From: 2017 Winesong Honored Vintner Nils Venge, Saddleback Cellars, Far Niente/EnRoute Winery
This Lot Includes: Private Tour & Tasting for four (4) guests with Nils Venge 2010 Saddleback Cellars, Oakville Estate, Cabernet Sauvignon, 3L 2011 Saddleback Cellars, Oakville Estate, Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon, 1.5L 2012 Saddleback Cellars, Oakville Estate, Cabernet Sauvignon Far Niente/EnRoute Tour & Tasting for four (4) guests. Includes current and library vintages, wine cave & garden tour 2015 EnRoute Pinot Noir, Russian River Valley, Les Pommiers 3L
Known as the ‘King of Cabernet,’ legendary winemaker Nils had been making impressive cabs prior to establishing his own domain – Saddleback Cellars! 1982 was the first vintage of Saddleback Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon and the winery was bonded in 1983. Operating Saddleback on weekends, after work and during vacations from his more formal winemaking duties at Groth, Nils was kept very busy! Nils made a name for himself and Groth during his tenure between 1982 – 1993…and that would be 1985 when he scored a perfect rating for their Cabernet Sauvignon! It’s easy to see how he earned the title, King of Cab! After parting company with Groth Vineyards in January of 1993, Nils branched out and became a consulting winemaker in addition to running Saddleback Cellars. We’re pretty certain he hasn’t looked back!
This lot finds a vertical, in varying formats – starting with the 2010 Cabernet in a double mag. Both Stephen Tanzer and Cellar Tracker rated this vintage 91 points. With the 2011 magnum of Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon, you’ll find elegant aromas of lavender, violet and sweet vanilla fill the nose leading to a palate of rich black currant and anise…and another 91 rating by Cellar Tracker. Of the 2012 Cab, Wine Spectator says, “Fresh and zesty, with a lively, spicy mix of blueberry and blackberry flavors. Presented in an elegant style, this is supported by ripe, fine-grained tannins, ending with a long, clean, juicy aftertaste. Drink now. ” Long time compadres of Nils Venge and Saddleback is Far Niente – and it’s not uncommon to develop great friendships with like-minded people, and in this case vintners! Far Niente also claims sister wineries, such as EnRoute, the only winery based out of Sonoma in the Far Niente family, but no less fabulous in her ability to produce quality wines. And since Saddleback and Far Niente have developed a partnership, at least in the Winesong auction, we couldn’t break these two up! So we present a stellar 2015 EnRoute Pinot Noir. EnRoute’s passion for Pinot is only matched by Nils Venge’s passion for Cabernet!

This is an unbelievable 20-bottle vertical of classic Bordeaux spanning 4 decades. The 1975 remains gorgeous and each included here has received rave reviews. To cite a few, the 1982 earned 98 points and Robert Parker called it “A massive wine that is clearly of first-growth quality in this vintage, the 1982 Gruaud Larose remains a youngster. One of the most concentrated wines of the vintage (as well as one of the most concentrated Bordeaux’s I have ever tasted). This behemoth is a singularly profound example of Gruaud Larose that continues to justify its legendary status.”
And as for the most recent vintage: “The 2010 is a very strong effort for Gruaud Larose, possibly eclipsed by what they have done in 2009, this is a pure, full-bodied Gruaud Larose.” This is one 2010 where patience will be required. Anticipated maturity: 2020-2040”. 93+ points. But the best summary comes from Clayt himself who knows them all and so graciously shares them today: “Many of these are classics, particularly the 1982 and the 1986 which I have had on numerous occasions … never a bad bottle! The 2000, 2009 and 2010 are also great wines, although I have thoroughly enjoyed drinking the vintages from the 80’s like 1983, 1985, and 1988.” For the fine wine connoisseur, this is a must-have 20-bottle vertical.

A RARE, THOUGHT-PROVOKING TOUR DE FORCE A Donation From: Meredythe & Clayt Daley, Jr.
This Lot Includes: 2005 Château Pontet Canet Pauillac, Grand Cru, 6L This extremely rare imperial is presented in the original wood case. Pontet Canet has now become one of the benchmark properties in Pauillac under winemaker Alfred Tesseron. As for accolades, the 2005 ranked 7th in The Wine Spectator’s Top 100 Wines of 2008. The Wine Advocate gave it 97 points and said: “Possibly the youngest wine of all the 2005 Médocs in terms of its evolution, at age 10 the inky purple 2005 Pontet-Canet tastes more like a two-year-old wine. It is full-bodied, ripe, and excruciatingly fresh, vigorous and exuberant. This is a tour de force, and a sensational effort that rivals the first growths. Give it another 5-10 years of cellaring, and drink it over the following 30-40 years.” Wine Spectator scored it 96 points with this description: “Black in color, with aromas of blackberry, black licorice, tar, mineral and fresh flowers. Full-bodied and powerful, with ultrafine tannins that last for minutes on the palate. A polished, thought-provoking wine. Shows wonderful purity of Cabernet Sauvignon.” Please feel free to express your thoughts with your paddles for this exceptional Imperial! Opening Bid: $1200

Coro Mendocino is a unique program unto Mendocino and speaks to the creativity and diversity of the winemakers. Established over 13 years ago, the idea behind Coro – derived from the Latin word for “chorus” – was that participating wineries create a Zinfandelbased, blended wine that had to follow specific parameters. In essence, any winery could participate, but only those that passed a review by blind tasting could then carry the Coro label. The parameters set forth through the subgroup of Mendocino wineries, Consortium Mendocino, were that each producer had to use Zinfandel as their main varietal and it had to account for anywhere between 40 and 70 percent of the blend. A secondary varietal could be added but the percentage of it used could not exceed the percentage of Zinfandel used. Other parameters included using Mendocino grown
fruit only, minimum barrel time of one year, minimum of one year in bottle pre-release, and a myriad of other caveats. The result‌incredibly interesting wines that showcase the diversity and creativity of the local wine producers. With this lot, you have the opportunity to compare the eight producers from the 2012 vintage. These wines are meant to age so if you have patience, you can cellar these for a few years. You also have the chance to sit at the table with these winemakers for the Coro Mendocino 2015 Vintage Release Party on June 23, 2018. This exceptional evening includes a focused tasting on each of the new releases.

The wines are rich, sensuous, age worthy, concentrated, refined, powerful, elegant and tannic. They are meant to age. Critics agree. The Wine Spectator awarded it 95 points and remarked: “Built for aging. Very dark ruby in color, with a garnet rim. Dried flower and berry aromas. Full-bodied and very solid, with masses of fruit and tannins. Still has plenty of time to go.” The Wine Advocate gave it the very same high rating and noted: “This 1982 is still displaying a beautiful deep ruby/purple hue as well as a stunning set of aromatics consisting of blue and black fruits, loamy earth, flowers, licorice, and spice box.” And to conclude with a telling, personal, and allimportant impression, we add Clayt Daley’s remarks: “This is another wine I have had the pleasure to drink on several occasions with nothing less than a great experience. This wine has cellared remarkably well, as some of the other 82’s have faded.”

A TRUE DALEY DOUBLE A Donation From: Meredythe & Clayt Daley, Jr.
This Lot Includes: 2013 Bon Pari Pinot Noir, Sonoma Coast (12) 2014 Bon Pari Pinot Noir, Sonoma Coast (12) Place on Exclusive Mailing List for Bon Pari
Super supporters and Winesong friends Meredythe & Clayt Daley have generously donated incredible wine lots throughout the years – including this year’s Winesong. We are delighted to include the first two vintages of Clayt’s own label, Bon Pari, in our auction offerings this year. Bon Pari is French for “good bet”. Per Clayt, “We chose this name because we believe in a Burgundian style of wine that still reflects its California origins. In the future, fruit for Bon Pari will come from our estate vineyard – a former thoroughbred horse racing ranch. We hope the vineyard and the wine are both ‘good bets.’ “ Every effort was made to make Bon Pari a top quality wine, including using fruit sourced from select vineyards of Dijon clones in the cool-climate section of the Sonoma Coast appellation near Annapolis. Clayt recalls they were allowed to “cherry pick” the vineyard for its best rows, paying a premium price for the fruit. The Daleys were thrilled when winemaker Fred Scherrer agreed to make a relatively small volume of wine for them. Fred had since
received great write-ups from Robert Parker and The Wine Spectator. What Fred has done is craft an exceptionally rich and concentrated Pinot Noir with a philosophy of minimal intervention – in other words, if you’ve got great fruit, the wine doesn’t need to be ‘tampered with.’ Clearly a noted wine enthusiast and collector, Clayt had very specific ideas about his wines. For his 2013, he shares: “The wine is being released three years after the vintage while most wineries released their 2013 Pinot Noirs a year ago. I wanted to ensure that the wine had sufficient time in the bottle to be drunk with pleasure on release. However, I believe that this wine will cellar beautifully for at least 3 to 5 years. Therefore, you can pull the cork now or wait for the wine to develop additional complexity and refinement.” Former writer for The Wine Spectator and Decanter UK, Norm Roby says of the 2013 Bon Pari: “This cool-coastal 2013 Pinot captures the bright, often illusive pure Pinot fruit and was crafted to showcase Pinot’s harmonious and refined personality...combining concentration and finesse, purity and complexity, it typifies the proverbial iron fist in a velvet glove. Vibrant, deep garnet color. Exhibits bright, youthful red fruit aromas that gradually open to reveal a mix of black cherry, ripe plum, and hints of raspberry. Round and silky on the palate, the multi-layered flavors combine cherry and plum flavors with nuances of black tea, cloves and earthiness. Subtle, fine-grained tannins contribute.” Bon Pari is sure to be a good bet! Purchase of this lot also secures a place on Clayt’s Winner’s Circle Winery mailing list for the winning bidder.

About the Artist Seeing through the eye of a camera was Rita’s main passion in high school - not surprisingly - since Rita’s father Ralph Crane was a notable LIFE magazine photographer for over thirty years. SPOTLIGHT ON SPOTTSWOODE A Donation from: Michael Tyers, Norm Roby
This Lot Includes: Spottswoode Family Estate Grown Cabernet Sauvignon Vertical, 2001, 2005 – 2014 Book “Spottswoode, 125 Years - A Family Wine Estate” by Spottswoode Estate Winery
Noted wine critic Robert Parker had a lot to say about Spottswoode, and for good reason…they are simply divine and a true Napa classic! The wine industry owes gratitude to Spottswoode for maintaining such a consistently high level of quality and representing the quintessence of Napa wines. In August 2016, Parker tasted Spottswoode’s Cabernet vertical from 1982 – 2014. As we ourselves couldn’t do nearly the justice that he does, we have provided his insights below for some of the more spectacular vintages of this noteworthy 11-bottle vertical from 2005 – 2014, plus 2001. 2007 Spottswoode Estate Cabernet Sauvignon 99 Points An absolutely staggering nose of blueberries, white flowers, crème de cassis, licorice and graphite is followed by a full-bodied, opulent, multidimensional wine that is seamless. Incredible fruit intensity, purity and depth of character make this one of the great, great classics in the Spottswoode lineup. This wine can be approached now, but it is nowhere near full maturity, and should evolve for at least another 30–40+ years. Owners of this vintage have liquid gold in their cellars. Drink 2016–2056. 2010 Spottswoode Estate Cabernet Sauvignon 100 Points Consistently perfect from barrel and bottle multiple times, the 2010 is one of the recent blockbuster efforts from Spottswoode. Superb aromatics of spring flowers, blue and black
fruits, forest floor and a touch of toast, are followed by a wine of exceptional intensity, texture, purity and a full-bodied finish with velvety, but noticeable tannins. Still extremely young, but also remarkably impressive even though it is only six years of age. Expect this to hit its prime in about 10 years and last for at least 40. Drink 2016–2056. 2012 Spottswoode Estate Cabernet Sauvignon 99 Points This is a dramatic, flamboyant, modern-day version of the 2002. Dramatic blueberry, black raspberry and blackcurrant fruit, along with camphor, charcoal, white flowers and foresty notes all emerge from the impressive aromatics that soar from the glass. The intense, explosively rich, full-bodied palate is layered with beautiful purity, stunningly sweet, silky tannins and terrific presence and complexity. This is a gorgeous wine on a relatively fast evolutionary track, but certainly it has 30 years of upside left. Drink 2016–2046. 2013 Spottswoode Estate Cabernet Sauvignon 99+ Points This is another killer effort from Spottswoode. It has hints of violets intermixed with sweet foresty notes, blackcurrants, chocolate and a touch of subtle smoke and earth. It is dense, with higher acidity and more noticeable structure than the 2012, but is as concentrated, dense and promising. Some patience is warranted in 2013, and I would suggest waiting another 5–6 years before pulling the cork on one. It is a 50-year wine at the very minimum and a great classic. Drink 2021–2071.”

THE HEIGHT OF HEITZ A Donation From: Heitz Cellar
This Lot Includes: 2009 Heitz Cellar Napa Valley, Cabernet Sauvignon, Martha’s Vineyard (2) 2010 Heitz Cellar Napa Valley, Cabernet Sauvignon, Martha’s Vineyard (2) 2012 Heitz Cellar Napa Valley, Cabernet Sauvignon, Martha’s Vineyard (2)
“Heitz’s Martha’s Vineyard bottlings rank among the greatest California wines in the 20th century” – Wine Spectator The magnificent story of Martha’s Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon began in 1965 and continues unfolding today. The historic handshake deal between the Heitz family and the May family, who own Martha’s Vineyard, made Cabernet Sauvignon history! The cherished relationship between the families now spans three generations. The three vintages offered in this lot have all received high ratings. The 2009 scored 93 points from Vinous, and per Wine Spectator, “Shows notable herb, mint and bay leaf overtones, with a tight, dense core of dried currant and berry that is slow to open. This is very shut down for now, and should age for a long time. The flavors build on the finish. Drink now through 2027.”
Earning a higher rating were the 2010 and 2012 – both with Cellar Selection designation from Wine Enthusiast. Of the 2010, Wine Enthusiast score them 94 points and said, “The mighty Martha’s spends three-and-a-half years aging in French Limousin oak barrels. It has years to go, its structure so expertly captured in the bottle, yet still willing to impart a lightness of sage and sarsaparilla, the tannins firm and integrated, with slight hints of cigar, coconut and that ever-famous mint. Drink now through 2025. ***Cellar Selection***” Vinous scored the 2010 96 points while Wine & Spirits score it 95 points. Clearly, this wine is consistent in its reputation and appeal. The 2010 also scored 96 points from Wine Enthusiast, who reveled, “This tremendous 100% varietal wine hails from Oakville and was aged over three years in oak. Juicy red-cherry fruit and a compelling hint of caramel greet the palate, framed by elegant, fine tannins and a subtle minty tone in the background. Balanced and rewarding from start to finish, it has years ahead of it to develop further nuance. Enjoy 2022–2030.” ***Cellar Selection ***

LOT 502 Marilyn Merlot – The Red Bombshell A Donation From: Robert Blanc
This Lot Includes: Marilyn Merlot vertical – 1984, 1985, 1986, 1992 (2), 1996, 1997 Marilyn Merlot Maneater – NV Take Marilyn home with a lot you won’t find anywhere else! Sanctioned by the Family Estate, and made by Nova Wines! Per their website, “the story behind the brand’s success includes a bit of Hollywood serendipity as well. Bob and Donna Holder, principal owners of Marilyn Merlot, moved to Napa in 1978 from Berkeley, CA. He was a CPA, and she worked at St. Helena High School, but they quickly gravitated to wine. Using some purchased grapes and some grapes on the Holder property, they produced their first homemade Merlot in 1983. One evening two years later, when the wine had been bottled, dinner conversation turned to a name for the Merlot. We wanted something cute that fit with their other ‘Maneater’ brand. Donna Cazet said, “Why not call it Marilyn Merlot?” The idea just hung there, and it really seemed like a clever name recalls Bob Holder. The Holders credit the idea to take Marilyn Merlot commercial to a friend in the wine business, “We gave a case to an auction in 1987, and Tony said, ‘You ought to be selling this stuff,’” says Holder. So they did! Another friend connected them with the attorney representing the estate of Marilyn Monroe. They eventually hammered out a licensing contract, which allowed them to use the photo reproductions on the labels and gave exclusive rights to the brand name. Sales of the first commercial vintage, the 1985, which was made with purchased bulk wine, were good. They sold out the initial 2,500 cases they’d made, and then received an order, from Japan, for 2,000 more cases of the vintage. They bought more bulk Merlot and did a second bottling from the 1985 harvest.”

The vineyard has Franciscan soils, clay underlain with sandstone. This is a highly expressive wine, rich in aromatics with notes of pomegranate, orange, allspice and vanilla. Additional layers of ginger, pencil lead and minerals complete the intense profile. Round and supple in the mouth, the seamless acidity carries the flavors and the fine grained tannins effortlessly into the long finish. This is another impressive vintage from Burt Williams’ Morning Dew Ranch, which will improve with an additional 7-10 years of aging. A vintage like this, where everything comes together perfectly, is rare and will certainly be a vintage to enjoy for many years to come! Adding to this bounty of Williams Selyem are six bottles of the 2008 Pinot from Russian River. This wine scored a 94 from The Wine Spectator. The six 750’s were donated through The Land LLC – an organization that purchased property in Anderson Valley previously owned by Jeff Skoll (the first president of eBay), who donated wines from his private cellar and now we have the good fortune of offering them to you. It defines the modern style of balanced opulence, displaying rich, fantastic layers of blackberries, black currants, cassis, dark chocolate and oak, with a deliciously earthy note of green olives and a savory touch of bacon. The tannins are as softly complex as Napa is capable of producing. Whether or not there’s a Rutherford character is questionable, but the quality is beyond dispute. LOT 530 Mondavi Made A Donation From: Michael Tyers, Norm Roby
This Lot Includes: 2001 Robert Mondavi Winery, Stags Leap District Cabernet Sauvignon, 1.5L “Harvest of Joy, My Passion for Excellence” by Robert Mondavi, signed “Annie and Margrit, Recipes and Stories from the Robert Mondavi Kitchen” by Annie Roberts, Margrit Biever Mondavi, and Victoria Wise
Get your fill of Robert Mondavi, one of the most iconic winemakers in California history. Mondavi was a leading California vineyard operator whose technical improvements and marketing strategies brought worldwide recognition for the wines of the Napa Valley in California. From an early period, Mondavi aggressively promoted labeling wines varietally rather than generically. This is now the standard for New World wines. The Robert Mondavi Institute for Wine and Food Science at the University of California, Davis opened October 2008 in his honor. This wine consistently scored 92 points – from Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate, Wine Enthusiast, and Stephen Tanzer’s International Wine Cellar. Per Robert Parker, “The Chateau Margaux look-alike, the 2001 Cabernet Sauvignon Stags Leap District, exhibits a dense ruby/purple color as well as a sweet nose of acacia flowers, white chocolate, and asphalt presented in a medium to full-bodied, well-delineated, lush style that manages to conceal serious tannin in the finish.”

LOT 531 Ancient Friends A Donation From: Artist Eleanor Harvey
This Lot Includes: Framed Oil & Pastel Painting, “Ancient Friends” by artist Eleanor Harvey, 19” x 29” Artist Statement: My major interest artistically continues to be the landscape, and while I enjoy oil painting, I’m presently working mainly in oil pastels, a drawing medium, with an oil pigment base. For many years, I “painted” with colored pencil, a medium that offers different drawing opportunities (considerably less messy than most other mediums). I have lately been experimenting with polymer clay, which opened up a fun new world of working with color. A quote from Artist Elizabeth Mowry, author of “Landscape Meditations” also reflects how I think - “My subject matter of choice remains landscape. Nature was so much a part of my ... childhood that the bond was a passionate one. I am comfortable with my motifs because for me they are what I truly know the most about. Even within a traditional venue, creative thinking can work its magic”. I, too, am most comfortable with the landscape as my artistic subject matter, and I love the eternally changing, yet familiar scenes, colors, and shapes all around me.
