French Connections L

eaders from Groupe Louis Guibert of Bussy St Georges, France, popped into The Daily Brew HQ to fill us in on life in Scouts et Guides de France, the changes they have made to the organisation and the traditional values that they hold.

Scouts et Guides de France have a very traditional approach to Scouting and Guiding and although the group live near Paris and Disneyland their programme focuses around traditional activities such as knot work, map skills and getting back to basics. They spend a lot of time with nature and camping with basic equipment, encouraging the Scouts and Guides to be resourceful. Like the British Explorer Belt, Rovers in France (18+ years) complete a community challenge abroad giving them international opportunities, where as Scouts and Guides attend a range of national camps, such as Roverway. Scouts et Guides de France are attending WINGS2014

with 29 young people, 6 leaders, a chaplain and have 4 staff representatives in the staff catering team. They are attending WINGS2014 thanks to Colnbrook Scouts who made contact with them when they visited France last year and wanted to meet a French group and consequently Colnbrook invited them to WINGS2014. Interestingly, Scouting and Guiding in France combined into one organisation in 2004 to come into line with the fact that schooling is predominantly co-educational and with the view that workplaces and establishments in adult life are mixed sex. Scouting was originally brought to France by a priest and still maintains a predominantly catholic focus, even though they now welcome Scouts and Guides from all religions. The values are structured around 6 areas: relationship to ourselves, others, our bodies, the world, nature and God. Due to the Catholic connection each group links to a local

church and the priest will normally visit the camp where they lead mass and a time of reflection.

At WINGS2014 priest, Bruno, led mass on Sunday and even though they did not publish it widely before hand, were visited by 50 people from other groups around camp where they shared mass. Bruno spoke of the 2 fishes and 5 loaves story and the wonder of how his small loaf of bread had managed to feed the 50 strong congregation perfectly, even though he was not expecting that many people to attend. He said, “I enjoy coming on camp as it is a great opportunity to listen and support the Scouts and Guides and help and witness them achieve new experiences.” A 5 minute period of reflection is also held each day, giving Scouts et Guides de France an opportunity to pray and listen to each other and spend time with God.

ScoutMed doors are open from 8am to 10pm but the emergency team are on call 24/7.

Hospitable Hospitality

I

nternational participants are able to make the most of the WINGS2014 experience thanks to Home Hospitality.

Known as HoHo, links are often made early on when international groups register. Host groups have been accredited with providing a massive amount of support and generosity to allow international groups to come to WINGS2014. One group from Ukraine stated “84th Reading, 1st Earley St Peters have been really important in providing all that we needed in terms of equipment, transport links and accommodation. They welcomed us in to their homes but have also taken us out to places like Stonehenge. When we were cold 84th Reading jumped to the rescue and sourced extra sleeping bags for us all”. Such stories of generosity are echoed by Annick, International Support Manager (Scouts) for WINGS2014. There are 44 international groups that have been teamed up with HoHo. There have been some challenges, but true Scout and Guiding spirit wins through. One group could not host international group in their homes, but was able to put them all up in their Group HQ. The parents created a rota to meet the group and get them to transport hubs and dining experiences.

olly, 12, a Guide from 7th Crosby has spent her first night ever on camp. Eve and Catherine, 14, Holly’s Guiding friends explain. “We have been trying to get Holly to a camp for three years, because of the challenges Holly faces, considerations need to be made for her care”. Never before has Holly been able to meet new people from across the globe and meet new friends in such a way. Even though Holly has medical needs it has not stopped her fully experiencing all that WINGS2014 has to offer. Eve and Catherine excitedly detailed all the activities that the Guides have done together with Holly. “Katakanoeing was really fun, the Splash It! team added a chair so that Holly could take part,” enthused Eve. Catherine added we also did African Drumming and

Bollywood Dancing. Eve continued “Holly even was on stage Hula Hooping within 10 minutes of being on site and even went to the party dressed up as an Incredible”. “It’s been so easy having Holly here, all her needs have been provided for and that’s thanks to the WINGS2014 team”. Holly’s Mum and Dad continued “we met on an international camp and so were keen for Holly to experience the wonders that it has to offer. Finally, Eve concluded: “It’s so exciting to know that we can plan for her next international Guiding adventure with us”. Holly’s Adventures show case just how inclusive Scouting and Guiding events can be and are fun and exciting for all.

Placement ranges from a single Scout from Panama who has been teamed up with 27th Woolwich Explorers to 44 Scouts from Hinna in Norway pairing up with 1st Burghfield and Sulhamstead. HoHo not only promote awareness of culture, but also provides lifelong international friendships. So if you are a group who has provided HoHo THANK YOU, if not, why not consider it for the next WINGS.

anni, 16, and Nuutti, 18, from Mikkeli and Juankoski, both Finnish Scouts staying with the Lake Area Scouts and Guides on Technology. Before coming to WINGS2014 they have been on a bus tour of London and Gilwell and visited Brownsea Island. Sanni and Nuutti are both Explorer Scouts in Finland, a section for 15-18 year olds. Nuutti will soon become a Rover where he will stay until he is 22.

S

Hiking is both Sanni and Nuutti's favourite activity in Finland. Traditionally, a long camp will include a one night expedition away from the main site. Most Finnish camps are held in the forest and they were both surprised how modern the camps are in the UK. Nuutti said: "I was surprised to have wi-fi on camp. The evening entertainment is also much different to what we have in Finland - the parties are bigger!"

Sanni and Nuutti have been to England before. When asked what they thought of England, Nuutti said: "There are some cultural differences between England and Finland but it is not radically different." Sanni commented on the differences in food and said: "It's not as healthy as what we eat in Finland. We normally eat a lighter breakfast of bread or porridge and then two hot meals. The butter in the UK is darker than the bread!" Sanni and Nuutti with the infamous Finnish hat

Ilmoitusluontoista asiaa: Johtajamme “karvaton” Visa etsii kesäheilaa, jotta hänen ei tarvitsisi hakea elämäniloa pilailemalla leiriläisten kustannuksella. nergy and activity is the order of the day in the Perform It! zone, as Scouts and Guides have been wiggling the week and dancing.

The zone is split into four fast-paced activities – rhythmic drumming, cheerleading, Bollywood, and hula hooping. Hula hooping runs on the main stage, as Livi, Jo, Sharna, and Gems from the UK Hoop Gathering Project show off the latest and greatest techniques, with wiggling galore. The professional hula hoopists seem to have the ability to make anyone hula hoop in style. Over in the Bollywood tent, Priya explains what Bollywood is, and how Bollywood dance takes inspiration from all forms of dance. An energetic warm-up involving stretching, swaying and sidesteps makes way for a lesson in the moves for the

Pussycat Dolls’ “Jai Ho” song, from the film ‘Slumdog Millionaire’. Over in the cheerleading tent, instructors Jonny and Beth were also busy with warmups – which involved plenty of stretching, jumping around, and even lying on the floor. At the far end of the Perform It! zone, Sharon and Nicky from ‘Organic Rhythm’ were banging the drum for banging the drum – with a marquee full of drums, maracas and other delightful instruments. With basic beats and rhythms being echoed across the camp, the group is eased in gently as the beat quickens and the rhythm builds. In this part of WINGS2014, you can feel that the camp is truly alive, and the energy is electric.

Sex Education By Andrew Burdett

I

n such a sensitive topic as sex education, views differ hugely on how best it should be delivered – indeed, if it should be delivered at all – within Guiding and Scouting. Ought the movements provide a universal programme, or should individual groups have the freedom to tailor their sessions to their own young people?

Two Dublin Scout leaders told us that, whilst they weren’t sure how it would fit in, there is a place for sex education. One of the women explained: “You’d need to be conscious of what the group wanted, but it’s important that members could at least ask us questions if they wanted to.” The other added: “I’d do my best to answer questions from the group... If someone asked something, I wouldn’t turn them away.” The leaders, both 18, said that being relatively close to the age-range of the Scouts in their troop was an advantage. “When you’re young, you don’t want some 30- or 40-year-old giving you sexual advice. You need someone who you can more easily relate to.” One group of Girlguiding Senior Section leaders said that the nascent Free Being Me programme – devised by the Dove Foundation and the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS) – works positively to encourage girls and young women to celebrate their individuality and

improve self-esteem. These sessions are delivered under a peer-education scheme, which removes some of the awkwardness associated with a wide leader–participant age-gap. “If you value yourself,” one leader said, “you’re more likely to be careful and sensible”. They noted that this week, their girls have appeared more relaxed about the way that they look than they have been at camps prior to this year’s sex education sessions. The nature of the Guiding and Scouting movements may be seen to naturally support informal education in this area, just as it does in many others. “The role of being a Guide leader is really three-part,” said one woman, “You’re a teacher, a peer, and a parent.” She was pleased that some members of her unit had felt confident enough to approach her with personal issues. However, she agreed with many Scouts and Guides who told us that they were opposed to making sexual education a mandatory part of the programme. One 15-year-old boy, who said he’d be most likely to consult the NHS Direct website when he wanted sexual health advice, concluded: “If Explorers were forced to take prescribed sex-ed lessons, it’d be no different to school.”

series of challenges, competitions and team games, Play It! is the perfect opportunity to find the ultimate group at WINGS2014! Giant ball racing, space hopper football and Jalopy Racing are just a few of the amazing activities to try in this zone. It seemed clear from The Daily Brew’s visit to this zone that the Inflatable Sausages race was a huge hit with everybody. Banstead District Explorers thought the concept was hilarious as they bounced to the finish line, and Jemima from 3rd Woodford Guides didn’t even care

that her group came last because it was still great fun! “It didn’t matter that we lost, it’s all about teamwork, coordination and laughing”, she told us. The concentration on the faces of Surrey Explorers Jess, Tom and Sean during the Toxic Waste Handling challenge was clear proof of their determination to beat the record, and Cramond Guides flew around the Giant Ball Racing assault course in only 34 seconds! Zone leaders Chris and Vikki have loved running Play It!

because “it is a great chance to see everyone enjoying themselves…there is nothing better than a bit of healthy competition!” This zone is a fantastic way to meet new people by forming new teams and competing against one another. Team spirit couldn’t be more prominent in this zone with every unit cheering for their peers and shouting words of encouragement. Some groups are obviously slightly more competitive than others, but ultimately everyone is joining in to simply have a good time!

Tea With... Nigeria By Bianca Cole

T

he Daily Brew sat down with Damilota from Nigeria who is 16 and has only been in Scouting for 5 months. Damilota tells us “My aim on WINGS is to know more about Scouts and to meet new friends from other parts of the world. According to Law, 4, a scout is a friend to all and a brother to every other Scout. No matter to what country, class or creed the other may belong. I believe we are one big family and one love keeps us together”. The Promise and Law is very similar to that of the UK, but interestingly to make it easier to remember the law is sung.

appy birthday to Brownies who are celebrating their 100th birthday in 2014. Brownies began as 'Rosebuds' in 1914 and became 'Brownies' in 1915. Numerous celebrations are taking place over the year; WINGS2014 celebrated with the Brownies with this amazing birthday cake designed by Phil in staff catering.

Damilota gave The Daily Brew a beautiful rendition. The Nigerian contingent has enjoyed many of the activities that have been on offer at WINGS2014. “I have loved the activities and zones and I have met people from England, Canada, Austria, USA, London, Sweden and Belgium. I’d love to come back to the UK if I am invited.” Fully involving themselves in the WINGS atmosphere, Damilota states “This evening me, my friends and leaders from Nigeria will be on the main stage singing a Nigerian song in our traditional clothing”.
