Explosive Welcome T

he atmosphere was electric. 7000 Scouts Guides gathered together for the WINGS2014 opening ceremony. As everyone entered the arena, they were welcomed with a flurry of party tunes. Groups could be seen singing, dancing and making new friends.

to live footage of the excited crowds before WINGS2014 Director Brendan Booth took to the stage for a personal welcome to all those who have been to WINGS before, those who are here for the first time and a special welcome to those who have travelled internationally to reach us.¬

With everyone in the arena, the crowd welcomed to the stage their hosts for the evening: Danny (Explorer Leader and Surrey County Entertainer) and Martin (Young Leader with 84th Reading).

A special welcome was then given via video link from the local County Commisioners of Guiding and Scouting in Berkshire, who were both excited to welcome national and international members of both organisations to their county and are immensely proud of what has been achieved by the adults who have worked hard in the run up to WINGS2014.

Danny and Martin warmed up the crowd with their jokes, banter and frolicking about the stage. When they discovered the big red button, the crowd loved the suspense! Danny and Martin soon welcomed all the subcamps to WINGS2014 before introducing our WINGS2014 theme: Discovering Cultures, Experiences and Berkshire and encouraging all participants, leaders and staff to Discover Together.

An array of spectacular pyrotechnics



Finally, the time came when Brendan pushed that infamous red button causing an array of spectacular pyrotechnics. As the white drapes fell from the stage to reveal a backdrop of Windsor Castle, a group of cheerleaders showcased their lifts, jumps and tricks to much amazement of the audience, followed by a cast of local Guides and Scouts who filled the stage in neon to give us a showcase of dancing to some of the popular recent tunes from the charts.

During the mega mix showcase by the cast, Danny and Martin came on to display their own dancing and musical skills with their superb guitar playing and tiger impressions.

After a rendition of The Superman Song to get everyone on their feet, the arena erupted into a dance floor as the neon party commenced and celebrations for the start of WINGS2014 got into full flow. Participants and leaders from all around the world joined in to party and celebrate the start of an amazing week of challenge, discovery, friendship and adventure.

Not literally, but the spirit of a campfire will certainly be present in The Squircle this evening. Get there for fun, dancing, singing and looking a little bit daft.

Arriving at WINGS in Style S

couts and Guides from around the world poured into Windsor Great Park in their thousands yesterday. Cars, buses, coaches and pedestrians queued up while leaders fetched wristbands and welcome packs and joined participants entering WINGS2014 through the main gate onto the site that will be our home for the next seven days.

An assortment of Austrians, Norwegians, Americans and local British Scouts and Guides were the first international participants to arrive early yesterday morning into Windsor Central railway. To pass the time as they waited for the transfer bus the Norwegians taught the Austrians a brilliant Moose Dance!



Twelve Russian Scouts arrived on site bright and early. It is the first time in the UK for many of the group who have been looking forward to all the new experiences of being in a different country and are hoping to meet new friends across the world whilst at WINGS2014.

The Russians have spent two days in home hospitality just down the road with the 1st Ascot Scout Group exploring Windsor and enjoying a typical British summer barbecue.

Explorers from Slough had a much shorter journey as they live just ten minutes down the road! They could have walked, but decided the coach was a better option. Ollie, Edward, Jodie, and Edward had plenty of bags in tow and can’t wait to get their morph-suits on for the neon party.

Adam, Tom, Ryan, Adrian and Robert, all Explorers from Milton Keynes were also in the queue for registration. It’s their first WINGS although some of the group have already experienced the World Scout Jamboree in Sweden in 2011. Tom said: “I am looking forward to making international relations with

2nd Langley and 18th Slough have teamed up to tackle WINGS together and have bought WINGS first timers Ellie and Madison. “We thought we were glamping, but we’ve just seen the field and know it’s not now!”

This realisation certainly hasn’t dampened their enthusiasm, you may be able to hear Ellie and Madison expressing their enthusiasm for WINGS2014 in Swindon.

to the test by carrying seven tents and their cooking equipment for fifteen people in one trip across the site! Many trips later their mess tent was finally assembled, just in time for the explorers to arrive.

In true Scouting and Guiding spirit and despite the gruelling task of dragging mess tents across fields, it was evident that participants and leaders alike were there to lend a hand to help each other out. Streams of participants carrying kit bags larger than themselves crawled across sub camps to assemble their tents together.

Once the tents were assembled, many participants and leaders took cover from the rain to have a cheeky cup of tea! Like many other exhausted leaders, those from the Firefly Rangers spent the afternoon relaxing in their Gazebo with a brew.

Leader Sharon brought twenty two Guides from Crawthorne to WINGS2014.

Kathryn, Caroline, Jenni and Kira are all excited about activities - Kira is looking forward to climbing and abseiling. They also claim Caroline is the weirdest thing they have brought with them to camp.

We caught up with one of several groups arriving from Austria throughout the day. Martina’s group, from the Carinthia region in Austria, has been staying in London for a week visiting the city’s tourist attractions from Buckingham Palace and the London Eye, to river boat trips and the London Dungeons.

Once groups had registered and units had made it through the main gate, the hard part really started – pitching tents and setting up camp but more importantly initially finding your allocated campsites!

Within hours of the first group coming through the gate, the subcamps transformed very quickly from empty fields into buzzing hives of energy and excitement! Tom and Phil from Banstead Explorers really put their strength

1st Wootton Bassett Scouts brought along their weather stone to help them predict the weather. However, the accuracy of the stone is somewhat debatable! They insisted it works every time – go and have a look to check.

The Directors Daily Challenge yesterday was to help someone set up their camp – that was definitely achieved across the site by many. Hannah and Talia from 1st Finchampsted Guides were found carrying very heavy tables across their subcamp together.

In the Archaeology subcamp Maddie, Chloe and Rhianne fully embraced the idea of ‘glamping’ by bringing their air mattresses, though spending hours blowing them up without a pump was probably not how they imagined spending their first afternoon at WINGS2014.

They told us that their friend Sophie had accidently left her kit in the Isle of Wight; “It’s not just her bag…it’s everything!” said Maddie. Good luck Sophie, hopefully someone can lend you a spare sleeping bag!

eet Alexandra Ziermann and Timo Packfrieden, a scout and leader who are visiting WINGS2014 from Perchtoldsdorf in Lower Austria.

Alexandra, Timo and their group are staying with the Odiham group from Hampshire on the Technology subcamp. They arrived in England on Friday, in time to head to WINGS yesterday and will be heading home next Sunday.

Scouts in Austria are aged 14-16, though this is measured by camps and they must do three camps before they move sections. After Scouts they head to Rovers and Rangers until they are 20.

Alexandra has been in Scouting for 10 years and has been a leader for 5 years. Some Scouts from her area in Austria came to WINGS2009 and went home with some fantastic stories to tell the rest of the group.

Because of this, Alexandra knew that WINGS was the international camp to visit when bringing her Scouts to the UK.

Alexandra und Timo teilen sich einen Platz mit ihrer Gruppe und einer Gruppe aus Odiham, Hampshire. Sie haben das Unterlager Technology zugewiesen bekommen. Angekommen sind sie am Freitag, gerade rechtzeitig um heute zum WINGS Lagerplatz zu fahren. Zurueck fahren werden sie am Sonntag.

In Oesterreich sind die CaEx zwischen 14-16 Jahre alt. Es wird auch in Altersgruppen aufgeteilt. RaRo wird man nach den CaEx und bleibt dort bis zum 20. Geburtstag.

Alexandra ist seit 10 Jahren Pfadfinder und seit 5 Jahren Leiter. Viele ihrer Kinder kamen vom letzten WINGS mit tollen Geschichten und Erinnerungen zurueck. Deshalb fiel die Entscheidung, auch diesmal nach England zu fahren.

forward to lots of different activities and challenges throughout the week and making sure her group have a fantastic time.

Timo has been in Scouting for the last 10 years. He has been to England twice before but never with Scouts and is excited about attending an international jamboree. Timo’s favourite activity in Austria is Debate. In this activity a topic is chosen for discussion. Typically this would be a potentially controversial topic, for example Government or food choices.

The Scouts are split into a pro team and a con team. The debate usually lasts for around two hours but sometimes goes on longer depending on their passion for the topic. Timo is looking forward to seeing what activities Scouting in the UK has to offer and wants to meet lots of new friends. Timo has bought lots of his group scarves with him which he is keen to swap with new people he meets.

Alexandra and her group want to thank to Hampshire group for all their help and for coooking breakfast. They both enjoy a cup of tea with The Daily Brew.

Timo’s Lieblingsaktivitaet sind Debatten. Es wird einfach ein Thema ausgesucht, welches eher kontrovers ist, wie zum Beispiel die Regierung oder Nahrung. Sie werden in Pro und Contra aufgeteilt und duerfen ca. 2 Stunden lang diskutieren, je nachdem wie interessant sie es finden. Timo hat viele Halstuecher mit gebracht um sie zu tauschen.

A Moment of Darkness for a Lighter World

Check out these cool guys, they are the Challenge Team, there are nine of them and they wear pink. Lots of pink.

Monday will see a national act of reflection and hope in ‘Lights Out’, an organised campaign by the Royal British Legion, commemorating the centenary of the start of World War One.

This is Challenge Team Henry, he also has a funky hat with a propellor on the top - so really, you can’t miss him or any of the team. The Challenge Team are here to make taking on the Royal Berkshire Challenge Award the most awesome thing since One Direction.

Lights Out hopes that everyone in the UK will turn off their lights between 10pm and 11pm, leaving only a single lit candle or light to remember each and every one of the men and women who gave their lives to the Great War.

Not only can they actually ‘sign off’ your challenge awards once completed but they also have lots of answers, ideas and inspiration on how to complete your challenge award whilst you’re here at WINGS2014.



Discover the World of WINGS this week

Director's Challenge Saturday's challenge Help someone set-up their camp and make them feel welcome at WINGS.

o by now you already think you’re on the best subcamp at WINGS2014. But the trouble is so does everyone else. Why not test your theory and visit all of the others through the week, there’s so much going on.

At Space subcamp you can go out of this world.

Pass through the star gate into another universe full of aliens where you’ll have to dodge the plasma. Take a trip to area 51 where aliens have crashlanded, enjoy a visit from the National Space Agency and see how close you can get to the stars. Let’s launch some rockets!

The mechanical gate at the entrance to the Technology subcamp welcomes you to a world of inspiration – from James Watts’ beam engine to Steve Jobs’ iPod there is no end to the inventions which have changed the world.

What will you invent while you’re there? While you’re being inventive and creative look for T-Rex and the talking parrot.

Make as much noise as you can with the noiseo-meter, play a game of giant mousetrap and take part in the daily experiments.

Dig around the Archaeology subcamp and see what you can find. With the largest gate on site it’s certainly easy to find. You’ll have bucket loads of fun with team games, talent shows and an archaeological dig. How many songs do you know from the past? Find out with the disco of the ages, or find a new favourite tune.

Get on board with HMS Exploration, making sure you mark where you have come from and the miles you’ve travelled on the mileage post.

While you’re there be sure to take part in the Million Badge Drop too.

Saturday’s challenge was all about lending a hand to a fellow Scout or Guide arriving at WINGS2014. Here are two snaps of happy campers taking part in Saturday’s challenge.

It's a small Berkshire after all

INGIT is a massive wide game for all 5000 particiapants. Participants will be invited to get into teams of 10 people who will be set with the challenge of using their Guide and Scout map skills to orientate themselves around the extensive WINGS site.

The massive wide game hopes to encourage participants to utilise their team building skills, practice their orienteering and give participants an opportunity to meet new people, work together as a team and discover aspects of each other’s cultures and nationalities.

Around the site participants will find a range of WING It! challenge bases located in activity zones. Each is named after a place in Berkshire. Each base will host a themed

activity linked to that place. Visit the ‘Reading’ base for a sports based activity linked to Reading Football Club.

Visit Henley to get a taste of the Henley Royal Regatta by making your own boat, or a personal favourite, visit Slough, the home of the Mars factory, for a sweet treat!

As teams complete challenges they will collect letters to form an anagram. Anna, a local Brownie Leader from 3rd Old Windsor, has been challenged with the task of putting together this wide game for 5000 participants.

She told us, “I’m excited to be see young people from all over the country and world working together whilst having a great time getting to know new people who they have never met before.”

st Washcommon weren’t just happy with a normal gateway to there subcamp pitch oh no…they wanted something completey different so settled for a pioneering pole turnstyle with potted plants and sunflower teddy bears attached to the top.

The turnstyle structure was dreamt up five

years ago and the gateway has travelled around with Washcommon Scouts on various camps and even overseas. This year the gateway’s modifications for WINGS2014 were inspired by 50 years of Britan in Bloom - hence the potted plants. 1st Washcommone are camping at WINGS in 2014 accompanied by Tonsberg scouts from Norway.
